probably kinda noobish for a lvl13...but is there any reason for me to hold onto my bolts of cloth, or wood planks, or iron ingots, or any of my materials really....I've got like 35+ of each type of material and have yet to find a purpose for them

It depends on what character your playing. Look at what armor your going to want down the line and keep those materials. I usually don`t keep wood as you can get it fairly easily but I have about 100 cloth and 80 some iron plus 135 tanned hides, 8 feather, glitter dust, couple silk and fur. My storage is full.

none of the armor NPCs in any of the outposts I have access to offer armor that's better than what I'm currently wearing...

I'm a lvl 13 R/W btw

Heh, you've got lots of armor crafters between you and the end. Being a R/W, the max you'll find (eventually) is 70+bonuses. You'll need the wood if you plan on studded armor, tanned hides for scale, etc. The general requirements don't change all that much, just the quantities. So if you look at the nearest crafter you'll see what materials you'll need down the line (for the majority of them). Some of the special armors in the 15K per piece line have some "special" requirements.

thanks....it's good to be reassured that I'm not wasting my time holding onto this stuff. I'm just really wanting a new set of armor right now

Your about 1/4 to 1/3 through the game. What you want to do is save enough material for the armor down the road.

Look through here and see what you`ll need down the road and save that. For example it takes 10 iron ingots to make steel so you`ll need more iron if your a Warrior.

And I have found that using an expert salvage kit on the higher monster armor level drops yields a fair bit of steel.

Be aware that later in the game, you'll be flush with cash, and you will be able to buy the common materials at a Materials Trader for a relatively small sum of money (after all, there's not much to spend money on in this game, other than armor, skills, and trading, and it's very easy to get cash by soloing w/o henchies).
