Detailed Proposal for an Auction House System
Aethon
AFK shops are what the party menu should have been able to facilitate. I would be content if there were an overhaul to the party search menu's trading features. Specifically, I would like to see an increase in the number of characters in descriptions and the ability for shoppers to view and buy items without the seller needing to pay attention.
It may not be an auction house, but it seems way easier to implement seeing as how this menu already exists.

So shops decrease prices, and auctions increase them. |
But with an AFK selling system I don't see how the seller can easily decide what price to sell his item for. If he chooses too low then someone who does know the market will buy it from them and then place it up at the market price, while an auction house will allow the price to be bid up so that the person who put the item up for sale gets the market price. The price will still reach the value where there are a similar number of sellers and buyers, but AFK selling means the seller can easily lose out.
So what is inherent in either system to bring the market price away from the value determined by supply and demand ?

GW really, really, really needs this. If they dont introduce this in GW... I really, really, really hope they have something like this in GW2.
Galatea your explanation of the Auction House system is perfect. This is exactly how it should be. Thank you very much for taking the time to put this together!!

There is a good possibility that people will put stuff up for auction at ridiculously high prices just so it won't sell and they can get it out of their inventory. You would have to work it in such a way that items are not left in-limbo otherwise for just a few gold pieces you could have as big an inventory as you wanted to have.
I was there when you first posted the thread, It's sad to see it get washed away with the tide of "not quite as good" ideas.

1 - For performance reasons I expect we will have a limited number of auction slots on each account. I expect a mule character to have more slots even before the mule is given a belt pouch or bags.
2 - If the auction house doesn't have a reasonable max auction duration it is not a good system. So when the auction expires, the item won't remain in the auction system. So we have another counter to people using it for storage. So if the item is returned to inventory, then it will have to be re-listed on a regular basis.
So I don't see this being a problem.

There is also the issue of its implementation into Guild Wars. From what I've seen, the auction system would require ANET to create a completely new database structure and link that to the current one. So it looks to be a lot of work for ANET.

Here's the article that has some details about how Anet organizes their database. The database technology of Guild Wars

Since I don't want to go through 27 pages of crap that is old, I'm just going to probably reiterate what has been posted before. They have stated that it is IMPOSSIBLE to put an auction house into guild wars because of the way the game was made. End of story.

That I do agree with, but it isn't going to happen in gw1.

I like the first option, this way the auction houses won't be over crowded because everyone wants whats at one and one won't become the main auction house.
it will get rid of the sell/buy spam in the talk.
but it probably won't come out until gw2 because they aren't going to make many changes when a new one is about to come out

Would be nice to see this happen, at least for GW2, since selling and buying on guru auctions is kind of a hassle.
And looking for wanted items in game isn't cool either, can take some hours before you find what you look for.

Ugh, even though I do want an auction house, rezzing a 3 year old thread is too much.

Let's just don't forget about it.
GW is getting empty and empty. And a better market system would surely help a lot. Although I'd rather go for the Xunlai Market.

adding 'sell' and 'buy' to party search would do leaps and bounds in favor of trade ( 'trade' would still be there for those miscellaneous things liek wtt =p). And it would be such a simple thing to do...

If Codemasters can do it with Archlord, then I am sure Anet can do it with GW.

Yeah we so need an auction house or some Xunlai merchant....
I've so much stuff just sitting on mules and no time to try and sell it... I may end up just merching the lot, but to log onto an in game "proxy" seller so so needed...

I haven't played ff11 in awhile but the way they had it was kinda nice. They also had a "player shop" where the player could put the item's in their inventory up for sale for a price and when it was sold they could get their gold(well gil) and a % was supposedly put back into the world ro w/e they did with it.
Or at least thats what i remember, havent played since 2001 and i cant rly explain the way they had the auction house(thats what it was called) set up, its been too long.

Yeah, FFXI had a great action house system, you would just put an item up for whatever price, wait until someone buys it and get your gold. And if it didnt sell for a while it would just return to your house or whatever, so I guess this could be your storage box for Guild Wars.

even just a simple expansion on the current party search system would be a huge difference. there's mission/quest/hunting/guild/trade all under one tab, with unnecessary tabs for heroes and henchmen. has anyone even used those?
instead of having chat all under one tab, split up the tabs into the categories mentioned. that way, there is more room to play with the trade tab specifically. or even have multiple trade tabs (buying/selling/trading). each trade tab can then be further split into weapons/materials or "trader items" so it can include materials, dye, keys, runes, etc/collectible items/so on and so forth.
the party search window was a huge step in the right direction, let's make it even better!

As long as the item can be viewed from any auction house in the game, then I'm all for it.

However, I believe there should be an Auction House at only Lion's Arch, Kaening Center (Even if it's dead), and Kamadan. Also, all 3 of these Auction Houses would SHARE the same stuff so if someone puts an item for sale at Kamadan, you can see the item in Kaening Center.

With the amount of login messages, telling us of the "trade chat changes" telling us we will get temporarily banned if we spam outside of trade chat, you would have thought they would consider this an option.
Heck, we might actually be able to access the storage in kamadan without being yeti spiked lol

ANet has stated countless times an Auction House can't be implemented because the current architecture of Guild Wars doesn't support it. Why people keep signing this is beyond me. It's not like this feature is magically going to be possible just because the playerbase wants it enough.

But remember that A-net considered a 'book storage' but didn't put it into the game because of Server space.
Think about that.
Considering that, the chance of an auction house is close to none.

I still don't get it.
City of Heroes/Villains have it and it's awesome.
You have XX slots. You put an item in the slot, you set the price, pay 10% of the price you wanted for the item and press "sell". People see your item in a search engine, enter the price you wanted for the item. Although in CoX there is a "silent auction", so you don't know how much the other person wants for that item. You can predict that by looking at past history for this kind of item, compare to other items that vary slightly and then take your best shot.
