Why did you buy Guild Wars?
Zorax
What made you start playing Guild Wars? Do you try every MMOG that is released? Did you play in the beta? Is it the only game of this type you play? Was it the lack of a monthly fee?
I'm just curious as to why exactly you picked up Guild Wars.

I tried the "demo" weekend durign E3 last year and loved it. I forgot about it for the summer then heard about the WPE in October and played that and the betas. It is the most fun game I have ever played and even though I wouldn't mind seeing a few tweaks no other game has lasted this long on my computer without me getting really bored of it.

I'm poor/cheap. The no monthly fee was a huge boon.

I heard about it early last year and played in the E3 demo. After that I was hooked!
I preordered in time for the last BWE and so I played that too.
I've never played any MMORPGs that had monthly fees on principle, so I thought this game deserved my support.

The only reason I started reading about the game, was that it had no monthly fee. I heard about the game before I found that out, but I heard about alot of other, similar, games as well. And I just ignored them and kept playing Neverwinter Nights (which I have played from release up until GW). But when I heard that GW had no monthly fee, I started to find out what the game was really about. I was impressed by what I saw, and downloaded all the screenshots and videos of the game that I could, and ended up buying the Collector's Edition
Sure, I may be poor/cheap. But I decided at some point that I didn't want to pay to play games I had already bought, so I simply ignored all such games out of principle.

well a friend of mine (a game store manager) kept going off about some RPG that was going to release and said if looked fantastic. Being a RTS/FPS fan I wasn't too interested at all. He then told me there wasn't going to be a monthly fee. "no monthly fee you say?" " thats crazy talk!" I looked it up and found out that not only was he telling me the truth, but the game looked awesome! and the rec. specs were so low to boot. He tossed me a copy and 231+ hours and 38 days later, here I am.
before anyone says get a life. I had over a month off from work. go back this monday and will be only playing maybe an hour or two a night when possible.

I've been looking for an MMORPG for a long time and don't have enough money to pay a monthly fee. Guild Wars came out and doesn't require a monthly fee so I picked it up.
Stev0
It reminded me of Dungeon Siege and the no subscription fee was a plus.
Sir Skullcrasher
i was bored when i walk into the local gamestop. Since i needed a game to keep me entertain and interested in long time, i ask the store manager what they got. He told me about Guild Wars and i also heard about Guild Wars from G4TV and from other friends. So I decided to trade in some game to get Guild Wars!
Ninna
I was bored with WoW
General Bashalot
No monthly subscription fees, minimal lag, great graphics, limited exposure to fuktards and noObs, curiousity...
Alderman Sweet
No monthly fee.
ihmurria
The no monthly fee is what made me look at it. The great graphics and good reviews pushed me into buying it (plus I desperately needed a new game... aside from the Sims 2, my newest game is civ3)
PieXags
Got tired of the games I was playing, remembered "Hey wait, since all these other MMORPGs blow...what about that Guild Wars someone told me about?"
So I looked up and researched Guild Wars for a few days looking over forums, videos, screenshots, builds, skill listings, etc. Then decided that with no monthly fees I could definately have some fun with it.
So I bought the game.

First heard of GW from a friend who's been playing beta for over a year. He kept going on and on about it, but my husband and I were already rooted in SWG. Long story short, after we decided to go back to gaming (having given up SWG for $$ and frustration), our guild informs us that everyone is moving to GW and we should try it out. So...
1. Friends begged us to play.
2. No monthly fee.
3. We bought one copy at release to 'try it out'. Two copies, 5 characters and several, several hours later, we're still here.

"new......mmorpg... no monthly fee"
and i thought nothing of it, but after 5 hours of cs at home i thought "hmm, feel like playin something else" but alas nothing else on comp, then i remembered what he said, i asked him over msn what it was called, then looked around on the net, doing research and lookin at skills/buildsand that, then after maybe a week i bought the game, got my cd-key threw e-mail and started playing. now i play cs and gw ^^

Mostly, I was bored with Final Fantasy and needed a break from it. This looked fun and there was a lot of hype about it so I picked it up.
I havent regretted that decision yet.

Heard about and considered it because of no monthly fee...
Got it because friends strongly recommended it...

I've been playing since January betas... I got involved cause another member of my guild told me about it and gave me a friends pass... I ordered it after that weekend and did the same for another player... Our Gaming clan grew to like this as a refreshing change from the normal FPS we normally play, and continued to enjoy the beta weekends...
Once the game came out we were all real gunho and got all the way down to the crystal desert during the prerelease. Now we are just kind of taking our time doing quests and recruiting others from our clan into our guild... so we will be ready for chapter 2 Next Dec or Jan...
I am working on my second and third character builds through PvE, and capturing elite skills... We do an occasional PvP or GvG match when we feel like it, but mostly now its just goofing around when we are in there now... truthfully the sparkle is starting to wear off for many of us, and we are looking at other games again till the next chapter.

The concept of skill over time played lured me into the betas and after seeing the pvp element there I was impressed enough to get it. No monthly fee was nice but I having a real pvp element is more important to me.
NXds
I knew that it would be the next game Sence Diablo2 that i would feel that i spent my money wisely and i dont like paying for monthly fees wont mind buying Expansion as long as they dont come out 2 often a good 1-2 year per expansion and i hope they dont make more then 4 or i wont be purchasing.
Weezer_Blue
I played in the beta and thought being able to virtually jump into PvP and start being competitive was amazing. Even with them taking away UAS back then, it still wouldn't have had a huge effect cause all the trainers were close together and had nearly everything. Now, UAS and UAR are the only solutions to the completely horrible PvP game which has been sacraficed to the unholy PvE.

My mom picked up Final Fantasy XI for me ,when she got home i read on the box that u need to pay to play, lol.well i was sooo mad.I live 8 hours north of the City she bought it in and sad to say i can't return it.too bad because i LOVE rpgs ,anyways a couple weeks later GW came out in my town an i bought it.Funny thing is i make good money but have bad credit so no credit card for FFXI.
StandardAI
Because it was advertised as skill over time spent.

When you come right down to it, I bought Guild Wars because of the Cinematic Trailer. I mean, sure I looked deeper, played in the last Beta Event, and really dug the lack of monthly fee (I, too, avoid games with monthly fees on principle), but really, it was that trailer. My eyes bugged out at how cool it is.
Aaaaagh
I picked it up because of all the hype my friends were giving it, two of them beta'ed. I dont care about monthly fees, Ill gladly pay for a good game. I play alot of mmo's, but lately the newer ones have really been lacking imo.

I was getting bored of Silent Hunter III (especially after the 1.3 mute/deaf/blind crew issue) and was jonesing for an RPG. A search on Gamespot, sorted by score (9.2 btw), and I found Guild Wars. The free-to-play and streaming technology sold me immediately.
I would love to play EQ2 or WoW, but I also ignore pay-to-play games out of principle. I think ANet has set a precedent in this regard and I hope other developers follow suit.

My reasons for buying GW?
1) It has best looking female characters of all games.
2) No monthly fee.
3) My wife is a d2 addict, and I just can't stand the noise of her mouse clicking any more.

My wife and I joined the Beta's and have been hooked ever since. I'm not a real "kid lovin" kinda guy and I saw that this game was frickin full of them. So we started up our own 18+ guild which consists of mostly couples and older gamers. Been having a blast ever since.
..shade!!
Bored about blizzard that ruined warcraft 3 making an horrible ladder system.
Just to try something new, and i'm satisfied about this game.
[OT]But more should be done to improve this game (ex.: gold runes are too much rare).[/OT]

No monthly fee and the screen shots looked good.
WOW NXds you spend bugger all on your games. I get a new game every few weeks and swap / trade them once finished or if they are naff.
Paying a monthly for a game that actually had me hooked would actually save me money.

It was only £17.99 and had no monthly fee.. bargain!!

- No monthly fees.
- Leveling capped at 20, meaning new players have a chance to catch up.
- Very pretty graphics engine.
- Mixture of PvE and PvP giving it lasting appeal.
- Promises to take out the tediuous parts of traditional MMORPGs.
- Social/Community aspects - meet new people etc.

I was looking for a new game, having played the heck out of Call of Duty's expansion.
I don't like monthly fees... and that got me intrigued. I waited to read some reviews.... after reading a bunch, I decided that this was probably a game that I would like. Traded in a few games, got a bit of a discount and Guild Wars was mine.
Love the look of it. And the longer I play, the more I appreciate the complexity of what seems like a pretty simple game on the surface... I like the psychology of various PUGs. I've really enjoyed this game immensely.

***No monthly fee (always bonus for anyone)
***Love RPG type games (even if they are not typical)
***Level cap stays at 20 for awhile (hopefully to be raised someday)
***Claimed game was based on skill not spending 900+ playing
(not entirely true, but it is much better than other MMORPG's)
***Offered both PvE and PvP (good mixture that would keep players playing if the story was good and you had things to do to hold you over in PvE til expansion [not looking that way] and PvP)
***Always get to meet new people from all over the place.
Sure there is more but thats good enough

Kaos the Korruptor
Ok a breif background.
I am a Guild master of a Guild that originated on the Battle Net servers,We loved Diablo , and Diablo II /Lord of Destruction. But alas the thrill had gone with last patch that was implemented, after that our guild set out to find a new RPG for our online enjoyment. We heard about Guild Wars on the PK-HQ forums, there was a lot of talk and hype about the game being a cross between WoW,and Dungeon Seige with no monthly fee to boot.
Our entire Guild went out and got the Pre-order package, and played all of the BWE's from Sept/04 up to final release. At that point we decided that GW was the new game we were looking for.
Heck who could say no to a game created by the GODS that created most if not ALL of the Games Blizzard so proudly publishes.
! Let the Glory of The Gods of Korruption Live Forever!
