Game Violations anyone?

Game violations
How does a player who enjoys Guild Wars, distance himself from those who do not, and seek to actively destroy the game for those around them? We call this "griefing" in the old school.
Aye, we can always write a nice letter to GW at: http://support.guildwars.com , but what about when you see someone so offensive in the game that immediate action is required?
Is it cost-prohibitive to consider an ingame customer service rep?
My understanding is that offenders must be caught in the act - otherwise people would simply report anyone they didn't like or agree with.
I'm an old veteran of online games; I know bannable behavior when I observe it, and it's rampant in GW.
Name abuse
Ok, so the name filter in Guild Wars is. . . lacking?
I prefer nonexistent.
I expect to see idiot names in pre-earing Ascalon, but after the ascension?
COME ON ALREADY!!!
Examples of slimy names?
Engulf Mynuts
Slippery wet puzzy
and many variations of the same.
Let's not forget the ever popular reversed expletive - that is very common.
Racial epithets are also popular as well.
These are all instant and permanent banning situations in any other game.
Why not here?
Are they funny? some may think perhaps.
Appropriate? Absolutely Not.
Children also play this game.
Role-playing, or just plain scum?
Likewise, I can easily tolerate those who want to dance in their undies, or scream goofy idiot statements in the various towns; but it becomes inapproapriate when the only method of speech is stringing together 4-letter words in an unending stream.
Ok, you failed the mission, again. Ok, your party screwed you out of all the loot you demanded; fine. Get over it - take a break from the game. Don't stand there like a moron screaming profanity in the town square.
Again, the ability to simply call to an ingame customer service rep would do wonders.
In summary, there's a "core" of immature players who go from one game to the next, getting banned as they do so - its the same people over and over.
Any time a new title is released, they flock to it until they are again banned.
They are here, now.
Please assist them in their journey onwards - and out of Guild Wars..
Best regards,
Talesin

Alright, anet is Dead serious about violations... i got my reply from them within 2 hours, and then the comfirmation in another hour...
Just take a screenshot, and go to guild wars web site support, and submit the screenshot(press print screen to get one), remember the time it happened, and where it happened... write that in there, and you'll get a direct response, and well... it works.
I have already posted that i was going to crack down on violations, cause i myself read part of the terms of agreement, and well... you have to accept them in order to play... if you don't abide by their rules, you get Terminated.
They may not have people getting payed to babysit in the game... but there are enough to notice some things... it's a very large game, and not paying monthly just means less people to crack down on such things... but the thing is, the community(us) can help, and make it a better gaming community by submiting all violations, of course this takes a bit of time and effort on our half, but it's not much...

Thanks Perishiko - I have already reported those above, and will be reporting others as I come across them.
If you're a violator and you read this, you don't want me to find you in the game.
Fair warning.

I should report some things I have taken screenies of (like people advertising bots, cheats, etc.), but they were taken awhile back...

I reported someone for spamming racist rhetoric despite being asked to stop. I got my reply within ten minutes.

DON'T think that support is going to give you serious attention other than the cookie cutter automated response.
PieXags
They will, by all means they will. You didn't give them an automated email in the first place did you?
Anyways, I personally only report names that I am offended by. I don't find them often. Sometimes I just make up names like that, add them to my friends list and see if it's actually a person. Then I go party with them if I can.
Then I report them.

I think somewhere in the forum rules it says not to state names, and well... i follow those rules...
I've only reported two people, one was a racist, and the other was spamming in un-believable amounts (Non stop down the whole screen... don't know how he did it)... but anyhow, i normaly warn people that im going to report them... and if they continue to act ****y(koky *no harm done*), and think i'm bluffing, ill show them i'm not, as they abruptly get a nice "Your account is no longer in service" sign up.

I agree with what you said, and the problem is a lot of games face these problems. And I'm sure everyday they're probably getting complaints about someone who said/did something that got them really mad. Problem is they probably can't respond to all of them fast enough which sucks altogether.
Quite frankly, after a hard day at college, I don't want to sign in and listen to all of their crap. Oh no, I charged the guys too early and now we're dead, you lost 15 minutes of your life playing a damn game. Does your virtual status mean that much to you? These people that act like it's the end of the world really need to get out of their basements and see the light of day.
The thing that bugged me the most was a guy calling me a noob because I didn't use Teamspeak or Ventrillo or whatever they're called. That I don't deserve to win, and that I should just quit trying right now.

I've actually downloaded both vent/ts... ive used my mic that i have, maybe a few times, with my guild (the whole 6-7 avg of us)... lots of the time i just get on to appease them, and then i mute all the annoying screechy voices/breathing sounds... those really get on my nerves...

I"ve read a lot of good things about Anet's responsive nature. /cheer. Myself, in the last week or two I've not noticed ANYBODY playing the fool, except for trade spammers. Perhaps I've been lucky... perhaps it's just the difference between Europe and American servers... or perhaps it's not so common.
Either way, I agree fully. When someone is being abusive with no need, they should be reported. Why should we sacrifice our fun so that some prepubescent kid (even the ones in their 20's and 30's are still mentally prepubescent kids) can make himself better by belittling others?

Anyways, I agree with this post...something needs to be fixed so forums everywhere don't have disatisfied customers everywhere ranting that they will report all the inappropriate names they see, I'm not meaning to flame the idea sarcastically, if that's what it sounds like... I just want a name filter that's decent. One that blocks strings of words, even when spaced, or tied in with another word, or if the !@#$%^&*() symbols are used, etc.
DrSLUGFly
on a seperate thought (and playing the devils advocate) I find the name Engulf Mynuts very amusing. It's not at all clever since all it's doing is just putting the words together... but the word engulf, I don't know how to describe it. It's just so... dramatic...

*Huffs out of breath* I wanted... To catch... This thread... Before it left behind thousands of others... *TAkes a deep breath and sits* Okay- I've played a good amount of MMOs and there has ALWAYS been the 12 year old reject who was an immature butthead. Crappy wise-crack names, cheating, ganking, hoarding, you name it, they've done it. But with my last MMO there was a way to deal with it. Mainly with -sweet pure vengance-. In AO we had a system called the ARKs, or Advisors of Rubi-Ka (Rubi-ka is the planet you play on). These folks were voluntiers that would help out newer players, stop disputes, and kick and ban abusers of the system. These guys were ussaly great in helping you out with a dispute, but sometimes, because of the war between two factions, they were a bit biased. I don't tihnk we'd have that kinda crap here though if it was enfourced. Theres only really one faction- unless you count Guilds or Countries. I guess a reward system would be needed to help with any kind of.. Admin(?) to help in GW, but I'm sure alot of people would help out anyways. Oh, and most of the guys who worked on D2 worked on GW, and if they have the same kind of wrath as Blizard, we won't have many abusers in the future. Bliz went on a banning spree and has remained a vicious booting machine since then. But maybe thats a good thing :3
Massassi
I'm all for cracking down on the immature but I'm not too keen on the name filter. currently my highest lvl main and best loved Char is my N/Mo Massassi Mahrb (pronounces Maw-saw-see Meh-rb) and though there is absolutly nothing offensive about my name an unthinking computer wouldn't agree. At this point I feel as if I were supposed to say more but I have nothing more to say....*cough*
Talesin Darkbriar
Well, I have begun reporting obvious violators, and the GW response (unlike Stevo's missive) was immediate and positive.
I received letters from 2 GMs, who stated while they will not confirm action for me, they would look into it immediately - and the two I reported are GONE.
/applauds GW staff.
Now I'm no ogre, I don't care if you call yourself Gandalf, Legolas, or Twinkie the creampuff, (there IS a Kmart security out there..jeez..) But any obviously offensive name is going to be taken to task if I see it.
Best regards all!

It pays to mainly solo! I rarely pay attention to people's names or the jibber jabber going on in the towns. I don't think it's Anet's responsibility to police society's disfunctions, but that's just me. Is it really that hard to turn the chat off, ignore a person, or stop reading people's names?
GoblinBoy
When I first started playing the game, the day of it's public release. I noticed that mostly all of the people playing the game seemed to be true players. Everybody I talked to was friendly and willing to help or answers question's. Recently in the last month or so there has been a definite decline in the quality of players. People spamming, trading outside the trade window, cursing and basically degrading other player. Which unfortunately has caused me to turn the chat system off completly.
Cause basically all that seems to roll up the screen is garbage. Sadly, I take great offense to this, because it ruins my game personally. Kudos to the people that are reporting rude and offensive players and getting them banned. It is only what they deserve. And I totally agree about that "there are also children playing the game"
They also have a right not to be offended.

The most important issue is that there are children playing this game. It really annoys me when I see people in districts behaving inappropriately. I hope ANet can do something about the minimap. Sometimes when I quest or do a mission with a group, someone always draws a swastika on the minimap. And the worst part is that you can't report the person because you don't know who is doing it.
I have something in common with Kuku Monk is that I don't really pay attention to people's names except if it is something real offensive, then it'll catch my eye.

I'd like to say that it just the "kids" doing this, but the sad truth is most of the abusers are typically in the 18+ crowd.
I believe the general consensus is to go after the violators - not tell everyone else to ignore it. That's sort of along the lines of shooting your pig because he watched the fox eat your chickens...
spikydude
People who are not polite in towns, and people who shout out inappropriate comments to the opposing team in PVP, and people who draw penises on the mini-map annoy me very much. I mean c'mon grow up!
Crystal Nightingale: As far as drawings on minimaps are concerned, I think that there was one post way back that suggested a minimap color be assigned to each member of team. Like that whenever someone draws on the map, you will know who's drawing, and if they are drawing inappropriate things, you can report them.

Honestly, the middle school caliber names don't bother me nearly as much as all the chest-thumping from the other camp. "YALL BETTER WATCH OUT I'M A REPORTING MASTER AND I'LL GET YOU BANNED!!" If you want to report names that bother you in your own good time, fine. But all the posturing is just ridiculous. Don't make yourself out as some instrument of divine judgement.
Which is to say nothing of anyone who uses the term "obviously offensive". Offensive material is 100% a matter of opinion, and the only opinion that matters in this case is ANet's. It's like the bible thumper who insist that Allah is "obviously" the devil... Dead air.
Now what follows is just my opinion, but I'm honestly amazed that anyone can get so worked up about some childish names. Unless you were home-schooled, I'm sure it's nothing you didn't get plenty of in grade school. Every time someone made a fart joke, did you demand they be suspended? If it didn't bother you as a kid, I don't see why it should bother you as a (presumably) mature adult. Or why a sexual reference like "Engulf Mynuts" bothers you while a Victoria's Secret ad in a magazine doesn't.

I suggest you go read the naming policy - its quite specific. We don't need anyone of your "obvious" caliber to enlighten us with "Evil is not really evil but live spelled backwards" mentality.
Entertaining? Certainly.
Annoying? Without a doubt.
Drive through, nothing to see here.

So, way to dodge around answering any of the other things I pointed out and bring in examples of my personal philosophy (of which there was actually very little in my post) in order to distract everyone. How about I just quote the part you should pay attention to this time?

You still miss the point Darren.
Offensive is as offensive does.
Perhaps you can explain to me the roleplaying aspect of "Engulf Mynuts"?
I have control over who sees a Victoria's secret magazine ad, but I don't over other players in Guild Wars. I use the easy to understand filter:
"Would I be upset if my child saw this and asked me about it?"
Problem solved - no home schooling required.
Again, you seek to reduce to the absurd that which is clearly spelled out and understood to be offensive. There really isn't any wiggle room here. I understand your reasons for debate, but its a simple black and white issue.

Well I was hoping to get at some of your personal reasons for being offended but I guess that's not going to happen and, since the ANet policy is set in stone there's no use in debating the morality.
But you should keep in mind that Guild Wars is designated as a teen game, and the naming enforcement will never be perfect. If your main concern is what your kids are being exposed to, maybe the responsible thing to do is not let them play?

I've never seen any racist remarks, nor, as far as I can remember, any four-letter words, although I may have typed some myself when missions have gone bad. And I'm now well over 100 hours into the game.
It'd be interesting to hear if anyone's played both international/european servers and US servers, and if they've noticed any difference wrt abuse levels?

A friend (well, someone i know in-game) whispered me to say that he had been in an arguement with someone and he had called him a name of some sorts. He told me this person had threatened to get him kicked from the game for being abusive.
I said it's not a good idea to argue..just apologise to him and move on.
My friend said "good idea".
I don't know if he did apologise to this person but i never heard from him after that for a little while.
Funny thing was a got another message later saying "I just got kicked from the game for two hours!"
LMFAO Well done customer support! I don't condone any bad behaviour...even from "friends".

2 hours huh? Nice to know they have a less-than-capital punishment also...

Well, we homeschooled our daughter, and she's as sick and twisted as we are. I say that proudly.
She's also going to be 20 soon, so if she played GW what she saw and read would roll off her back the way it does with us. But then, we've never hidden anything from her or "forbidden" her knowledge. (i.e., she knew what a penis was from the time she asked "what's that?" when seeing nudes in an art book)
But, many parents are deeply offended by "words".(I personally don't see how a word is inheritantly "bad") And they count on Devs in games to make rules so their kids aren't harmed. Our daughter is not offended by words unless used in a racist or sexist way to hurt. But young many kids see a four-letter word and gasp, feeling guilty they are reading them at all. I'm not talking about 13 years old and up-most of them have heard every expletive there is by that age. I mean the younger kids who may be playing. I personally would not let my daughter play GW at 13 or younger. Why?
Well, because I know there idiots in these games. I saw someone with the word "pedophile" in their name. For those that don't know what that is, it's an adult who molests children-tries to or does have sex with them. And as sick and twisted as I am, I find that's neither witty nor funny. Just sick and wrong. Just to bring the point on home, I was molested as a kid, and if I were a 15 year-old playing GW, it would really bother me to see the word "pedophile" in someone's name. I would feel abused all over again.
So while I agree with Free Speech and the right to have whatever name you want, I also see why some people are offended. That's why the Devs make rules...

That's why the Devs make rules...

aye, im with Luna... Engulf mynuts.. urgh, please shot that person. thats wrong.. also, teen game? please, dont get me wrong, but i watch - i have seen parents say okay to kids wanting GtA Saint Andres.. and these kids are 11...
lets try and keep the gmae as clean as possible please - Areanets two-part name thing seems to have gone a long way towards this - now lets clean up the final nasty spills.
if its offensive - shoot it. preferably with a nuke (its not overkill if it dosent get back up...)

Appropriate? Absolutely Not. Children also play this game. |

For some people, the desire to have the last word is when conflict with immature ars*wipes becomes a problem.
People who reply with: I'm gona f*ck*n report u!! u muth*f*ck*n p*ssy ur so f*ckn gay!!! this sword rocks u f*ckin noob! go to bed!!! ur momma eats sh*t and ur father smells of elderberries.... or, something...
But are people like that ever gonna be stopped one way or another?
I'm totally sick of making it known IN chat that I'm reporting someone now. Most of the time I go "NameHere, stop spamming or I'll report you" cos they don't respond to whispers. I say three more times and that's it and I type 1, 2, 3.. then I actually post a ticket about a suspected bot cos.. well, either that or they're bored n blind. I did that quite a few times, but 30% of the time I'd get shit on by OTHER players, and be called full of bullshit. Like, I was just threatening or something. So now I keep quiet and don't talk in chat as much. The spammers and morons just wind me up.

That is about the crappiest thing I have read. People like this make me not want to even play the game.
Do you think that it is necessary to try and get as many people banned from the game as you can???
I have some friends that have questionable names and they don't bother anyone. In fact they are in a guild and they don't really do anything but GvG battles.
This game has gone straight to crap. I am not impressed anymore and I will not be getting any expansions. This game is absolutely no fun because you are now getting crap items, if any, for fighting tons of mobs. (no I am not trying to farm) That coupled with the crappy players dropping out during a hard mission (making me only use guildmates and hench)
Isn't there an age limit for even buying the game? There should be an age limit for being able to play it too.
This is what you get for a game that has no monthly fee. I will be getting Battlefield 2 and will just stick with CS:S and BF2.

OH god the minimap *Slaps face on desk* Penses aplenty drawn upon that little thing. You should be able to disable that thang so you cant see it, or atleast see the name of whoever is putting a big schlong on your screen.

I was a guy with a name. I think it was...Grabbin Myass. Nevertheless when i saw it i laughed but it was still disturbing. I agree with this guy. Some names shouldn't be allowed.

It's funny really...
Everytime anyone posts a topic like this, there is always a hue and cry about "civil rights being violated, free speech being trampled, and the right to have sex with farm animals abused."
Puh-leez.
It's just plain old-fashioned common sense and common courtesy.
If you take the same situation and apply it to real life, how long would it be tolerated if you insisted on yelling expletives in a crowded shopping mall, or wearing a large name tag proudly displaying your name as a sexual perversion? Better yet - try both at an elementary school; preferably parochial.
Inappropriate? Of course not! Civilized behavior is soooooo overrated.
/dripping sarcasm off.
This isn't rocket science or a secret society bent on world domination; it's an open discussion and debate regarding naming policies and appropriate behavior.
I don't care if anyone gets angry at a bad wipe in a battle and yell "Oh F*** it!" We all get mad once in a while!
I do care when you go on nonstop for 5 minutes straight, and then proceed to carry on the rant in the nearest town or mission zone.
Get your pacifier, take a time-out in the corner, change your pampers, whatever!
May I propose a /spanking emote?
That might do wonders...
Perfect example:
Yesterday in Pre-searing Ascalon there was a group of people indulging in a very vocal, very explicit, roleplaying of fellatio. Of course, the lead moron was named "Jizzshooting master" - what could one possibly expect?
The others had normal names. I asked in whisper for them to please knock it off, and they complied - problem over.
"Mr. Master" however got reported for both his idiot name, and his apparent need to roleplay out his sexual cravings.
Plain...common...sense...
nothing else.
May your skills prevail,
Talesin
