Guild Wars Diversity - Discussion of new Races in the GW Universe

Sry, there was a problem with the server so it posted 2 threads. Plz post in this one.

That sounds like a pretty good idea to me, however, if it is an expansion where would the story start and end? It would be pretty cool to pick a dwarven faction, but again if it was an expansion it would have to have a new story or else it really wouldn't be much of an expansion. Maybe after nightfall they could have a land north of the shiverpeaks, where the dwarves originally came from and the story could go from there, along with the idea of choosing who's side your on, the Deldrimor Dwarves or the Stone Summit.
blademan176
/signed, i think its a really good idea since i have discussed this w/ him and agree that we need more factions and more Tyrian storyline and wrap-up.
strong1
I had an idea that might make it easier to implement this, possibly without the storyline. I used to play games that would come out with little plug-ins that were cheaper and smaller than full blown expansions, Oblivion is doing it now, selling $2 pug-ins between major expansions. I think Anet could do this with GW, a 10/20 dollar pack that gives you the data, without spending 50 bucks for a whole new thing that would need a storyline, thousands of new people and stuff. With this idea, alot of people are already there, it just needs some new content.
xBakox
I've posted this before, but why not (like strong1's idea of plug-ins) have a small 'plug-in' expansion pack having 1 race for each chapter (1-3).
For Tyria, simply re-make the starting cutscene explaining why a dwarf (the ideal new race for Tyria IMO) woud be in Ascalon and why he would fight for them. (An idea that comes to mind is that a huge party of Dwarves came over the mountains to trade and sell goods to Ascalon, but on the way there the Charr snake up on them and steal most of the good and so they want revenge, or something...I'm sure Anets writers could come up with something better then me).
For Cantha, maybe the Tengu decide because of the plague they want to learn more fighting techniques from Shing Jea or something like this.
They could add a few quests here and there for the races and maybe one brand new armor for them and charge 20$ on the online store or something.
Quite simple IMO.

Please don't spam the thread. I'm sorry if I posted a repeater, but this version is my idea and I'm getting good replies on it.
I like your ideas xBakox, they make sense and I also like the Tengu suggestion.

Why does everyone want different races? Every other friggin RPG has different races. Go play one, or ten, or a hundred. Quit beating a deader than dead horse.

/end sarcasm.
People want them because there are very few different ways to customize your character other then a poor customization and different armor. Because it would bring a new vareity to GW and allow people to actually grow attached (at least more so) to there character despite PvE that isnt the best.
If I wanted to go play WoW or Lineage or some other bad MMO I'd go play it, but I like GW the best, and races would only make the PvE experience better IMO. Dont like them? Dont make a different raced char if they ever allow us to play them. Everyone has different ideas, but more customization isnt a bad thing.

New races are a giant waste of time. Massive expenditure of time, energy, and money on art assets for something that doesn't alter the gameplay one bit? Wow, that sounds like a _great_ idea.

I say they should make tengu cause there awesome. Also they could do alliance battle between tengu tribes

Listen to this, If you wanna make a human you can choose between undead human and normal, and if ya wanna play dwarf choose between summit and deldrimor. In this way we get bad ppl and good ppl

We don't need that stuff in this game.
Anryla
I dont like this either
If races where added it should only alter the Look of the character and nothing else. Sure, dwarves are perhaps stronger or something but that will only create unbalance and therefore races is a bad idea.

GW won't turn into WoW with new races, and I'm not going to go play WoW.

dont want it , dont need it

IMHO if youre going to put in new races put them in a new expansion on a different island. Dont mess with the current storylines I would personally not want to see tengus running around in my petrified forest. I thought it was pretty stupid seeing that little dwarve running around on the fire islands. SO if youre going to be slapping in new races put them with a new expansion because i like the current storylines just like they are.
Also i like the "if it aint broke dont fix it", simple but true.

It's true, there wouldn't be all that art developement and stuff, because these races are already in the game. You guys look at the thread and post your complaints but I think you fail to read the whole thing or see past the bare minimum of what is being said. We don't want to add new races, that would change GW, we want to implement ones that are already there and maybe give them a little action. I think GW is great how it is, but it needs improvement, and this is just one way we can implement things that the developers have already put in the game.
BTW Elves suck, we don't want elves, stop saying thats what we're turning the game into because it has nothing to do with it.

I understand the want for other races I also the the argument against it. First I say NO ELVES or elvish impersonators. I already see about 100 legolas a day why make them actually look like him. as far as dwarves in tyra I dont see a major problem with it or the tengu in cantha. dont add extra story to it just let people play them. Its just a char skin. It wouldnt upset game play. I dont like the idea of (good/bad) chars. that sounds like WoW. But I would love to see a diablo 2 style of dueling. One on One matches for bragging rights or Ears
Now the against: GW is based on being human and surviving the rigors of a fantasy world. We are not the charr (who should not be playable) or the dwarves. Why would those people be interested in playing in a human nation?
the tengu might aid us but other then talon none of them fight along side us. and he has his reasons. not all tengu will be honor bound to a warrior. the dwarves have enough to worry about with stone summit. But I guess we could play drudges.

First off, I'm going to put up an excerpt from the Guild Wars Prophecies FAQ to allay anyone's misconceptions that new player races have no place in Guild Wars:
http://www.guildwars.com/support/faq/prophecies-faq.php
Other than this quote, and a quote of one of the big-shots at ArenaNet saying elves wouldn't ever be in Guild Wars because they're "too overdone" (Which is hilarious, considering there are dwarves in GW which are pretty much your cliche D&D dwarves, with russian accents, but I won't get into that)
anyway, here are some races I think would be nifty in Guild Wars
The Tengu
Undead
Dwarves
Centaurs
Naga
Druids / Wardens
Racial bonuses and abilities could be applied and balanced between them, and it would create a whole new dynamic to Guild Wars PvE and PvP (A Tengu Monk might have different drawbacks/bonuses than a Dwarf Monk, etc)
I think instead of new professions, new races should be the focus of the next GW chapters.

I thought they were Scottish, not Russian... Eh, doesn't matter.
If bonuses/penalties were put in for new races, they'd have to be either extremely well-balanced or just really minor. Don't want another WoW where half the Horde population is Undead.
I do think this is a good idea. We have enough professions to satisfy for a while.
And think about it. Undead Dervish... *drool*

Tell me, why would Undead help you in the campaigns? They have no place as a playable race imo.
Though, I do support dwarves for Prophecies, Tengu for Factions, and Centaurs for Nightfall as playable races if they want to add them in some sort of expansion.
Oh and no racial penalties/bonuses please. Asthetics are enough. I think its ridiculously stupid when you have to play a Tengu assassin because he gets +1 dagger mastery as opposed to a human assassin.

FYI, there's a world of difference between "there may be other races" and "there will be other races".
But I agree there should be new races eventually... that'd make a nice expansion pack IMO.
BTW, they can start with elves: just like humans but they are a little more pale and they have pointy ears.

Id really want to play as a centaur or tengu..

It would be cool to have new races; but these races would likely have to be restricted to a primary profession of one of the new campaign flavor professions. Imagine them having to go back and redesign every armor to fit on a Charr warrior, then the centaurs, then the tengus..... it would just be a pain. Maybe each [primary] profession should be restricted to a specific race; all the currently existing one would of course have to be human.

Implement races is easy. Just imagine Dervishes and Paragons as elves (or any other race), that's all.
When you make a new assassin, pve or pvp, he/she is always asian (chinese/japanese), the same could be done with fantasy races.
With the 3 chapters, human races (the real world races) IMO are now all available in GW, there are asians, blacks, whites, whatever, even undeads (nightfall necros) hahaha, so, the future will be fantasy races, it's inevitable.

Hispanics, Indians, Islanders? All ethnicities arn't accounted for, we have Caucasian, African, Asian and Arab. Hispanic and Native American Culture is original, and there are several other significant cultures like Indian (of India), and the mass of Hybrid cultures found on Islands.
As for Races, the Char and Dredge are good choices too, but Undead are not really a race, Undead and Aflicted are more of a curse, a scourge, not a species, they are undead creatures (human, dragon, dogs), they are not an actual species of their own. Gnawl are a race too, but they are rather pathetic IMO.

truthfully I'd just like to be able to make a real Black character in Tyria or Cantha. I'm Black and having all Black characters come from Elonia isn't true to life. Elonians obviously moved to Tyria and Cantha at some point. *cough* Justice Hablion *cough*

I think it would be bad if someone suggest that all Black characters get racial bonus of +1 Strength, right?
Also make them be able to /jump higher....
