Latest Nvidia Drivers Crashing Guild Wars On Exit
stratocastx
I recently upgraded to the 77.72 forcewares - I'm having two problems.
1. when I exit GW, around half the time my computer will completely restart with no error message at all. seems to occur when I have restored/maximize the screen to show my desktop frequently (I'm running in 1680 x 1050 widescreen, in game and desktop)
2. when I restore the screen to see part of my desktop, the game freezes in the background until I make it the active window. before, action on the screen continued even when I was on the desktop without GW being the active window.
is there anything I can do about this issues (these never happened on my old 66.73 forcewares)? I would definitely like to fix it if possible. thanks for any help
system specs:
Athlon 64 3500 (not oc'ed)
1 gb corsair 3200
200 gb sata hd
6800 GT 256 mb
Asus A8n-SLI deluxe

Hey mate, I also had the same problem with the forceware drivers, and I had to roll back to the 71.89's, and now I have no more problems...
Try the 71.89's it could work

As a rule of thumb.
There is no need to install the latest Video Drivers if there are no overall problems with your current setup.
Most driver updates will give a fix for certain games and possible hardware/software related issues, and also a small overall performance boost.
I would always check the Drivers Updates before going with an install, if you are experiencing any problems, to see if this driver release fixes anything you may be having problems with.
Otherwise, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Could not of put it better myself Dirkiess, I can never see the point with people who need to update when a new driver version comes out

well, I was replacing my ASUS mobo drivers with the nforce4 drivers, so I figured I'd get the new forcewares at the same time I'll give this a shot and roll back the driver. Previously I was using the 66.73. thanks for the advice

Do not replace too many drivers at once. This can cause you many problems too and is always best to only change one set at a time, test out your system for several days to make sure everything appears to be running ok and then do another update with other drivers.
It helps to resolve problems a lot quicker, because if you change just one set, you know it was possibly them that is causing the problem. If you change more than one set of drivers, it is difficult to determine what the problem is and you have to go through uninstalling all the drivers and start again.

I rolled back to the 71's and now the game continues even if it is not the active window, so that's fixed. Time will tell if the reboot problem fixes as well. I certainly learned my lesson here

i actually had this happen to my yesterday. i window'd and fullscreened many times, and when i was done, i logged out then hit the X and got a bluescreen on nv4_disp.inf or whatever it is. i also just updated to the 'official' 77.72's... i haven't had a blue screen in quite a while so i thought it was either the drivers or my recent overclocking of the video card.
this didn't happen on 77.50

Re-read my two rules of thumb in this Thread. There is some good advice in both posts.

I'm getting the same problem. I exit and the game would crash (sometimes) and you can see a blue screen for about a split second before it reboots. Is this problem really caused by the updated nvidia drivers? I had the 77.72 drivers installed before I bought Guild Wars.

Try this idea with several drivers until you get a stable system. Updating drivers is not necessary, especially if your system is working fine as it is.
The only time you really need to update drivers is if a fix has been given in the release that improves a game or piece of software that is causing you problems.
As the guy above said, 77.50 was ok for him before he updated. Try these first and see how you get on.
If no joy, trying several other releases and see how it goes.
Most of these should be obtainable from the same website above.

Very same problem here. I know it's a drivers issue, because I was using the reliable 71.xx for Guild Wars (I forgot which version it was).
But then.. then came the Battlefield 2 demo. And that demo had shadow issues.
That very same demo included more recent NVidia drivers which fixed BF2's shadow issues and that's when the trouble of GW started. Just about each time I shut down GW (Alt F4/Task Manager/ the cross in the top right corner) it went bonkers, computer immediatly shut down with a blue screen.
I've updated my drivers (released on June 22nd, 77.72) and it has only happened once since then. I thought I fixed it, yet it seems it still happens, although a lot less frequent.
What are reliable drivers for Guild Wars? The 71.89?

i've been playing gw since the first week of may and i've only had one bluescreen so far and that was with the 77.72 drivers.. hopefully any other driver set shouldn't cause problems.

I tried updating other drivers (nForce4 and video), and even reformatted my hard drive, thinking something was seriously messed up. The crashes still happened on a clean install, even with those WHQL 77.72's.
A few days ago I removed the 77.72's and put 71.89 back on. I can't play BF2 anymore, but at least Guild Wars doesn't crash.
Omega X
I used to get crashes with the 77.72's also. But I grabbed the 77.18's from the guru 3D website and I don't crash anymore. According to Guru3D, they are betas leaked from NvIDIA the same day as the 77.72's. I don't know anything about Battlefield 2 but it works great for Guild Wars.
Liante
Thanks guys. Went back to the 71.89 drivers and the game doesn't seem to crash anymore. =)

You need to post your machine specs, OS and modem/router details.
Please, no big Direct X logfile. If you want to give one of these, please attach it as a txt file and not paste it into the thread.

Did you happen to upgrade to the new nvidia drivers? I believe they are the 77.72's. When I updated to these drivers (after completely cleaning off old drivers) and sould exit the game I would blue screen everytime. Unistalled and went back to the old drivers and no problems.

Check this thread:

If you have recently installed the NVidia 77.72 drivers, I recommend you switch back to 71.89.

Other than the crash issue, the latest 77.** drivers were working fine for me, and then I noticed that the text in my Guild Wars client was distorted and had odd looking lines under it.
Since then I have switched back to the 71.89 Forceware drivers that I keep on my backup disk and have had absolutely no problems to speak of.
Addition: I have stickied this thread and made alterations to its title and icon to temporarily to raise awareness.

best time to update drivers is when you first get your compy. other than that update when you see in the readme for the new driver that it fixes an error in your game.

Funny you should say that, I have just got a new card a sapphire x800xl agp, and i'm having the same problem, but only under certain text lines..Thats using the current cat 5.6's, i'm going to try to install an earlier version to see if that corrects it..
As it's happening to me with an ati card, could it be down to the new updates Gw has done???.
If I can correct it i'll post back to say how....

If anyone else having these problems with ATI drivers too? Let us know so I can update the thread title.

Heres a better rule of thumb. Always upgrade to the newest official drivers making sure you've gotten rid of the old ones before hand. If you still have issues, look up the drivers release notes for current issues.
I've read the 77.72 release notes for you and I don't see your problem. I tried the drivers my self and experience the same thing, but as more people experience the problem and report it to nvidia, they'll soon update the drivers.
For the time being guild wars players will have to use 71.89.
People always have new complaints or issues with new drivers, but overall it fixes more problems then it causes. In this case it sucks for guild wars, but for people playing half life, riddick, splintercell and people with SLI and HDTV set ups 77.72 is the driver to go with.
Principa Discordia
My rule of thumb is "always at least try the latest drivers, if they suck roll back or find a good third party driver."
cannonfodder
Hey Principa, the issue that I had with the lines under certain texts seems to have corrected itself without me doing anything, so i'm not sure if it was a driver or GW update problem...

Sometimes (and more with nforce+forceware) the updates comes paired with MoBo and graphical drivers, so sometimes its better to upgrade both at the same time (given they are chronollogically close of course).
Also, I'm with provoko and Principa Discortia, always try the newest, as they can fix problems and/or give you perf boosts.
I'm going to receive soon (it must have been here today) a 6800GT (currently I have an Ati 9600 pro) and will try the leaked 80.40 to see if the problem is fixed. Ill post any comments here as soon as I have it in my hads (cant wait 239€ for that card is a bargain). If anyone want to try these they can be found in 3dchipsets.com. Wait I'll google the link:
http://www.3dchipset.com/drivers/nvi...a/nt5/8040.php
Hope this helps (me too soon )

Wow what a performance boost! Never thought it was going to be so BIG.
In the same spot in my Guild Hall, with the Radeon 9600 Pro I had ~45 fps, now I get ~145
Well, with the driver issues:
I think the scenario is not comparable since I had no issues with Forceware 77.72. But my MoBo is an Abit KV8-Pro with VIA K8T800Pro chipset, so I think the problem is with that driver + nForce chipsets (dunno wich one).
Also, the leaked 80.40 works great, I downloaded the Xtreme 80.40 from Guru3d.com and it gives me another bit (from 130 to 145 fps in the GH spot).
The only thing I can suggest is that you try those leaked drivers and the latest official nForce drivers and see it the issue is solved...
BTW, if you are thinking in upgrading your GPU, Geforce 6800GT has dropped his price almost a 35-40% depending on the site (I bought it onlyne at www.alternate.es, theres an "international" site, www.alternate.net) for 239€ when the same card was ~450€ on "real" shops 10 days ago.
*EDIT* I'm not sure if its allowed to post online shops, the Rules I've found says "No Advertising", but since I do not own that site and its a suggestion for the price opportunity I thought it was ok. If its not, I will delethe the URLs

Well Gang, I am still having problems. My crash is a little different though. Instead of a blue screen I get a garbled mess of colors and squares. Then the computer restarts. My graphics card is a BFG Geforce 6800 GT OC at 256 mb. I had the newest set of drivers but when I encountered the problem rolled back to 71.89. Still had the problem. I found this thread and tried those 80.40 drivers that were recommended and still had the problem. I have updated everything I can think of, monitor drivers, bought a new sound card, BIOS update and other things. I haven't noticed this on any other games and my temp on the card is well within operating range. I just hope it is something that can be patched from their end and that they are checking these forums and seeing all the problems. It's a great game; if you can play it.
turnkey1970
Well, it seems I can play it at 800x600, but not at 1024x768. Strange. Hopefully a future patch will fix this problem.
