The preversion of Favor, the errors of Worlds at War
Drakron
Recently I did the LotharĀ“s run (south to north) and I noticed there were two altars set in a place that seen to be designed for groups to get rid of Death Penalty of the very long (and hard) map.
Also I noticed there are two altars in Old Ascaron map and realized they were put there for a reason, to help players.
But I play in european servers that, unless Rus Corp is playing, simply dont get favor at all (we been about two days without favor) so such altars purpose (help players) is preverted by the current "Worlds at War" concept, players are simply forced into PvP in order to play PvE as it was meant to be played (just a notice, in gold drops I end up with about 1.5 plat from the run, with those altars I would end up with subtancial less gold) from what seens design.
Altars sould be a gold sink and they are not, at least not for europe server players that dont even realize the altars purpose most of the time.
I can understand that Guild Wars is trying to force PvP, unfortunatly favor is a preversion of normal PvE play ... they really cannot expect a new player that just come out of pre-searing to go to Tombs with a PvP character and win, european players look at the altars in the maps as decoration ... not as a map playing aid that serves as a gold sink.
Also we can look at the PvP "improvemnts", with this new update they simply removed the PvE aspect for PvP players ... they say its to reduce grind but honestly they simply altered grind ... PvP can now select if they want PvE and PvP grind or just PvP grind.
Worlds at War is a error as implemented, it hurts PvE part of the game and makes ingame features fail to funtion as they sould.
Lets take that new quest for example, in order to be activated you need your server to have favor but new player will simply miss that quest at first if they dont have favor when they get there ... in fact the day the quest was inplemented that place was full of very confused players that had no idea were the quest was.
Some might say "oh its just bonus quests" but really, I am a lv20 character that done almost all quests in game and I have nothing left besides farming ...lets not have any illusions that this game end game is farming or PvP.
I do hope the next update will remove the PvP aspect of PvE as the last one did removed the PvE aspect of PvP but somehow I doubt that ... PvE players are simply not as vocal about their area of the game as the PvP players are and PvP is what makes this game being played in the long run.

There's altars in Ascalon? Where?
Drakron
Baltazar altar is were you meet the NPC that given you warrior quests in pre-searing and Lyssa (I thinks its that is the right name) altar is just above were the theater (were you find Althea in pre-searing) ruins are.
I dont know if the altar in Regent River Basin is active or not (I am sure the other two are) and that one there is the near were you get the Ranger pet in pre-searing.
Those maps make most of early searing quests and the altar help new players that did not grind their way to lv9 in pre-searing to complete the early quests (and even lv 9 players can use then to help then).

How about changing the places from USA, Europe and Korea and changing them into fictional regions that you choose to fight in. Only problem i could see with this is language barriers though...
This would make the altars more widely available and make it able for the europeans to actually spend quality time in UW/Fissure

I've grown to hate the war of the worlds system. I hate it when I go and PvP and the first thing I see are rascist comments thrown about.
We should DEFINATELY have fictional factions that are seperated, things that aren't restricted by where you are. I'd like it if someone from Korea, Europe, and America could all be in the same faction together, that way it would decrease rascism in-game, it would make it so that all countries get to see the UW/Fissure more (Europe seems to not get it all that often), and just be more fun as a whole I think.

Like I mentioned earlier though, the language barrier will eb really hard to break. Maybe an ingame translator would work, but i guess that would be hard to program. Another thing, If the language barrier is not a problem, then randomly put people in a faction so that one would not get more populated than the other. Then again, lots of people may not like being put into a faction they did not choose. Their really seems to be no easy solution to the WaW problem, so my best guess is to just crackdown a bit on racism in the game( personally i havn't seen much of this, but people post about it all the time).

It may also be because a lot of American players buy the Korean version of the game >.< But I have never seen rude Koreans, ever before this game.
I think they should make an honor system of who can play in World-Wide competition; If you are a proven racist and you are proven to insult other nationalities you should be restricted from World-Wide tourney play.

Unless they are North Koreans (Just kidding) ya this is really anoyying, as ive just seen it a little while ago.

And to comment on the language barrier...
It isn't really a problem, I've played games where they had in-game factions or races competing at the top instead of real world nations, it's actually pretty neat and can build community. It encourages people to maybe use what foreign language they know to communicate and work together and what not. I remember I was in an international district the other day and two koreans were in there. I said hi to one of them, and surprised as I was I got a hello back. Then we just talked for a while and even discussed some builds, his (or her) english wasn't all that great, but it was good enough so that I could understand it. Was pretty cool.
I don't think language would be a problem, if anything it would promote unity.

Wasn't my idea, it's been tossed around here in these forums a few times. Glad you brought it up in the Sanitarium, time to go check out that thread.

I have a korean american in my guild who i constantly pester to translate for us. To my surprise, 99% of the stuff that you see written by koreans in tombs is not derogatory, and many times it isnt even guildwars related. I think that the WaW system isnt perfect, but it doesnt really bother me either. I think that if anyone is acting in an immature fashion, it's NOT the koreans, its those who attack them verbally etc etc.

I've thought the entire WaW scheme was a mistake from the start.

Alright... Was just poking around the guildwars community sites, so never posted here, no idea who any of you are or anything...
But it seems to me that you guys can't take a joke.
Most Americans can not speak Korean. Most Koreans can not speak English (or simply choose not to whenever I am around).
We don't know what they are saying, and they probably don't know what we are saying.
The few times I have seen a Korean player try to speak english in tombs it has been rather rough (which I don't know why I choose to mention, but I do. I don't blame them, I don't speak or write spanish very well and I studied it in school for 2 years) and honestly seems to be an attempt at an insult.
However, as a general rule, I believe that almost everything you hear in the American servers said about Koreans is a joke. Its not ment to be taken seriously. Most teams that I have been a part of that ventures into the tombs has failed to beat whatever Korean team they end up running into. Of course, often times its another American team, or European team.
Just so you know, some of the Europeans (only afew, mostly ones who don't seem to speak english very well) have tried to be just as insulting.
The point is... I don't think much of the "racism" you all are talking about actually is there. Its just idiots trying (and failing) to be funny. If the Koreans take offence I'm sorry. But they must understand that they are seen as by far the best group of gamers on the game and are going to be somewhat resented for that, and they must also understand that the general culture in Korea that Americans are aware of is the massive gaming section (thus giving them the predisposition to be seen as the best). Anyway, while it may be in poor taste, its a joke and generally understood that no one really cares what your oppenent says (besides maybe a little polite conversation, maybe a good joke or two, a compliment, some advice maybe...).
And on the original main point of the first post: Its there to help whatever servers can hold favor. If thats not you then I'm sorry. Maybe you could organize a guild (or the guild you are in) for the purpose of making runs on the HoH. If you got guildwars just for the PvE... Then I have to say you are very odd indeed. GW seems to be more geared towards those who choose to play both sides, not just farming constantly or PvPing constantly. They have made it easier on people who PvP more, as that is what the majority of end game play is set up for. They have also added more high end PvE options, though yes, those depend on your servers ability to PvP. The new areas they say they will be releasing will likely not force to you PvP to enter and will probably be right around the same level, maybe a bit lower, maybe a bit higher.

All I know is when I see an american kid say something along the lines of "I hope some of your family died in WW2 " to some Europeans, that it's getting a little out of hand.
(The above example was a thread started today.)
That, in my opinion, isn't a joke. And if it was, that kid needs a good beating.
Joke or not it's not healthy and it's not promoting anything decent, so I say---get rid of it.

yes racism is becoming a problem in this game... I see many americans insulting koreans and saying that europeans dont even know how to play the game. It becomes annoying to play in the Tombs...

I think people should stop 'expecting' all the bonuses that come from holding favour. The altars are a bonus, not a right. The fissure and UW missions are a bonus, not a right. If you get them all the time, they stop being special and end up just another PvE map for people to farm to their heart's content. At the moment they actually mean something, they are something to fight for (just about the only bloody thing to fight for, everything else seems to be pretty irrelevant).
As for racism and insults, grow up. There is just as much in the jingoistic media and television as there is in GW, be glad that they are making fools of themselves in a video game rather than joining cults and harrassing people in RL. If you let the insults get to you then they are doing their job - just ignore them.

John I'm going to have to say this thread is more for those who actually give a shit about the game community. Insulting someone here is no less real than calling them on the phone, or walking up to their door. The words still get across, the person on the other end still gets the message.
And most of us saying there's a problem aren't even really the ones being insulted most likely, I hardly ever get insulted, but it ruins my game to know that you've got a bunch of little snots out there almost being encouraged to say such things about another region of the REAL world.
And also, John. Some of us play games for the simple fact that there IS so much shit like this on TV and in other forms of the media, I personally don't watch TV very often for a reason. I enjoy games much more, I play games to get away from crap like that I encounter in real life, to encounter it here just ruins my game, and the games of others.
And anyone here who's "grown up" can see there's a problem, and that something needs to change. Hell there are probably kids playing this who go to school and discuss the games they shared the previous night, and in that discussion there's problably a few "Yeah, f*** Koreans" or some other, obviously wrong, things in there as well.
Ignoring them won't solve anything. And since we're not the ones they're directly insulting in most cases, I fail to see how us trying to change it means they're doing "their job"....

The current system is used because they have the eventual idea that there will be sanctioned world tournaments, which requires region names instead of realm names.

I agree with whoever said these insults are jokes, when I'm in the Hall of Heroes on Teamspeak, at the 6-way battle, I'll often say to my team in teamspeak "Crap, we got Koreans!" This isn't because Koreans are sub-human, they're just VERY good at Guild Wars and most online games, and since I really can't communicate with them, we can't say, you know, "Nice team build" or whatever. And on a side note--we do want to beat them!
Think about it, how many people see a Korean team and think "****, I ****ING HATE ****ING KOREANS!" rather than "Koreans..this won't be easy." That's just it, they joke around with their teammates because they know that Koreans are a bit hard to understand, in their battle tactics and language.
And by the way, to all wondering if these are North Koreans, they most definetly aren't, North Korea's government doesn't let North Koreans use the internet for fear of them finding out about their corrupt government, it's kind of sad =/ South Korea, however, is a democracy and that's why they play most free online games.

John has a really good point, but i wish he community was a little bit better. One game i played for a few months was called Sacred. It was a diablo clone game, but had many original things in it, so i found it fun. The thing i loved about it was the community. People rearely if ever insuletd eachother, people were always giving away free high-end unqiues and sets, adn you could actually trust about ANYONE to hold your items while you transfer them. To top this off, the game did not have divided servers so that people of languages played together. Just wish that all game communities could learn from the community of Sacred. As a side note- Guild WArs has a decent comunity compared to many games, and the racist comments are usually few and far between. Just look at the Diablo II community back in the day.... wow that one gave me nightmares.
Feli
However, i do not see a single valid argument to why it should be real world nations. Change it to fantasy realms and that would just cut a lot of racism down.
And honestly... regarding racism as some kind of joke is clearing the path for another Hitler. Racism is no god damn joke it is a disease. And having fun while discriminating others just because of the place they've been born at is a touch of pestilence.

whatever they change the names to, it will still be europe, america and korea, there is no getting away from that unless they actually change the distribution of the servers. If 'green side' or '#1 god team' is full of Koreans then other players will treat them as Koreans - there is no getting away from the fact that certain players are abusive.

Well i would suggest:
1. Keep the "regions" for the sake of language/culture.
2. In each region create fictional sub-zones/clans/categories.
3. Base Favour on the SUB-zone/category and not the region.
For example:
Korea,American and Europe will each have 2 "categories", lets jsut call them Blue and Red. You pick one , or the guild is created as part of a specific sub-category which the leader selected [when you join the guild you join one of the sub-categories].
Now it turns out that Blue and Red will exist in the exact same manner on all 3 regions.
In other words let Blue and Red be "shared" through all the regions. If a Red-based Guild win on the Korean Region then EVERYONE on ALL THE REGIONS in the Red-group will gain favor. So at any given moment someone on every region will have favor.
Your region will become only a grouping based on language/culture and will be irrelevant in competition and scores. You will get Korean-Red, American-Red and Europe-Red all sharing favor. How many sub-groups there must be is up for debate, but 3 sounds about right [i.e. Red/Blue/Unguilded/Neutral etc]

hmm...but wont we still have fights, if not between time-zones, then between the Reds and Blues of each?
yes, the favour thing needs tweeking, i think we all agree on that. how about all the areas are accessable, despite who has the favour, and instead, the Favour simply means that 'the gods reside in the place that holds their favour'
so, fort the half hour that your side has the favour, you can go to places like the hall of heroes or sardelac sanitarium, and *speak* to the gods
surely, being able to speak to, give donations to and gain special quests from the Gods, is enough of a reason to fight for their favour?

You would just get everyone attempting to join the side that wins the most, you only have to look at the europeans playing on US servers (traitors) to see how far players will go..

There should be some way of enforcing who goes to which (red or blue), otherwise everyone would join the winning faction, and no one would be on the losing faction.

there is enough semiotic (note: not semetic) association with just about any colour/name for it to be a pretty pointless exercise. The players that are insulting now will simply start picking on the different nationalities on their and other teams rather than being in one idiotic blob as they are at the moment.

Some will now say "Get off your ass and take HoH for Europe then!". This is an invalid argument - I get the exact same result (arguably better, as a Europe on equal footing with America and Korea would give me the favour 1/3 of the time, whereas an America that I join has posession roughly 1/2 of the time) by changing to the American faction.
It is easy to extrapolate to a "red, green, blue" system, and the problems would remain the same (though without the unsightly nationalism rearing its ugly head).
The system is unstable, and ill concieved. In fact, it is the only really bad design I have detected in the whole game, and so I hope that ArenaNet is not too proud to change it.
drowningfish999
I remember reading somewhere(fansite friday I think) that the devs have said if the WaW ever gets too unbalanced, they will take measures to equalize it. I don't play in Europe, so I can't really say how it feels to be on their point of view. But I do know America and Korea have favor a lot more often than they do.
Rayea
well, for some of us, it *is* a bonus ^^ since we never plan on actually going there in the first place
same goes for competing fairly and equaly.
i personaly, just think that colors, of any kind, will end up being abused verbaly by the people with an axe to grind..wish they would just go and grind that axe out of my way and not bother everyone, but hey, they should be alowed to speak, at least as long as they stay civil...however, were more talking about whats fair in the system, not whats going to be made into an insult by loosing teams.
another reason i say that the entrance into these places should not be limited to the favour of the gods.
all the mythical deitys i have ever read about in fiction, they allways say that they love or have dominion over *all* their subjects, so in essence, EVERYONE has the favour of the gods.
whats wrong with altering the system to fit this? then everyone will be able to go where they want, and the only place left for whinging is the
'<insert side> has the gods avatars, its soooo unfair i want them so i can get xxx quest off of xxx god!' <much cursing and whineing>
i would be much happier with that than the stuff i hear they are comming out with right now.

Or the people who spend their time complaining about not being able to access UW or FoW could spend the time waiting for them to open training themselves to help their region in PvP and winning Favor.
ANet has said UW/FoW are meant as a reward for successful tournament play, after all. You reap what you sow.

oh, great, yeah everyone tell us all to go flood the PvP.
i *Know* that i am as usefull to that lot as a chocolate fireguard, and definately not as tasty
its not abot the fact that its a reward for 'sucessfull tournamet play' if it was that, whats the point of having the Euro districst for anything other than RP PvE.
Europeans are spread out to thin and to multi languaged to fight 100% like america and korea, so why bother using the Eruo servers and just joint the Yanks...
and, if we all go flood the PvP, we will be useless and worse than useless, we will be taking up the space that a more compitent team will be able to at least try to win with.
hm, i never said it was for *everyone* (meaning the FoW and so on.) you would at least have had to have won or competed to be alowed into these places.
as a PvE who is flat out useless in PvP, i have no intention in going there, but i think its fairer to alow those that *want* to go there, and have at least fought in the nessicary places to be accepted, to be alowed to get in. i have friends that are good at PvP, but should they be forced into becoming memebers of american or korean servers to be able to get into the places? i do not think so.
