Whatever happened to conversations in towns?
Gmr Leon
Just curious as to why no one ever seems to talk to each other or chat in towns. All I see in the chat log is people selling stuff. No one talking about finding a cool area or something out of the ordinary. Nobody ever talking about builds.
Why is that? It seems these kind forums are the only places you can chat about GW stuff.

Even if you try your sentences will be lost in between all fast trading! I wish traders would use the trade channel!
Makkert
Everyone went to GWG and started chatting there instead.
Silent Kitty
What conversations? I play this game with the chat turned off. I only chat in teams, but that gets spammed too with "Im wielding a toothpick and a spoon!" or with "I am lvl 1 and 29% on my way to become the best spamming lvl 2 in this game!"

I know many players have moved to some smaller place to chat like Fisherman's or Maguuma Stade. I mean see how peaceful there is.. it's like heaven..
It is impossible to talk properly in bigger cities with local chat spamming so much that you get epilepsy in 3 seconds.

You forgot to mention Marhan's Grotto. Yea,I prefer Fisherman's Haven to hang out in and Marhan's Grotto to chat in and my guild hall to relax in. lol
Seriously though if only people would use the trade channel. Also,I always keep it to where I can't hear trade chat because barely anyone uses it.

dood, LA International District 1 is the place to be for chat! xD
theres always some cool people hanging around the boat doing very little but chatting.
never enough people there to attract traders or gamers.. and sometimes gaile comes on for a chat also.. then it just goes mad xD

Chat in big towns such as LA, Ascalon, Droks, etc. has been banned by the evil trade spammers
Dracus Steelbow
Well, there is always alot of cool people that hang around ToA either normal dis when we dont have favor(alot......) or int dis when we do. We tend to talk about best experiences, builds, crap having to do with UW, FoW though

i've been to RA various times, and pretty much half the time there is someone shouting about how someone else's build sucks or how they single-handedly crushed the other team without anyone's help etc.
it's just easier to chat within your guild, team or with friends because you're less likely to attract the stuck-up arrogant players looking for a fight, and it's also easier to keep track of the conversation in busy places.

IMO, most of the chat in towns are not worth paying attention to. I already lived through middle and high school, I don't need to voluntarily subject myself to that kind of childishness from many of the thers in town.
Most of the time if there is any kind of conversation, it is an arguement and you are almost guaranteed to not be able to get 1 counter arguement in before someone gets pissy and starts swearing or throwing newb around.
Too many immature people ruin general conversation in town.

I mostly ignore the stuff that is said in town, often going to the least populated instance immediately. For me, all the nonsense being discussed, between the trade spam, the people shouting out for a "bf" or a "gf", or the "nude" dancing, is little more than a waste of time. I just wish that I could find a couple of people who realize that "roleplay" does not just equal PvE, but means that you approach the world as your character, whether in PvE or in PvP.
Until then, I travel with Gwen, who is a far better conversationalist than 90% of the people hanging about in towns.

She will stop following and stay put, wherever you want her to stay.

Just spend 30 seconds in Marhan's Grotto and you'll never want to turn your local chat back on ever. Trust me, turning on local chat there is like dipping your hand into boiling water, you flinch and jerk your hand back in a split second. It's sadly turned into the idiot's hangout.
Henge of Denravi used to be a decent place to hang out, before all the chaos of the 'LFG DD' spam. But my favorite place outside of our guild to chat and meet quality players would be Fisherman's Haven. Plus the scenery is beautiful.

Follow Suilebhain's example, and when you map to the larger towns, manually select one of the highest numbered instances.
These are usually populated with people that also choose to locate there as opposed to the automated "active district" mapping.
You tend to find people that are actually interested playing the game, taking breaks and doing inventory house keeping. And since you usually find more serious veteran players there (that is if they even dane to travel to the earlier towns anymore) , getting questions answered without being called names or mocked is generally the rule, not the exception. Also, general chat is usually alot more "civilized".
Scammers, spammers, "cyber" seekers & generic jerks seem to avoid the less populated districts since there is no mob anonymity.

really. Random Arena is not a place you want to be for chatting.

Now, if we could all find a common time to populate the game in the higher numbered districts, I am sure our in-game experiences would be enhanced.

its pretty simple really. over zealous incosiderate traders spamming the main chat have made it impossible to get group or other activities going in most towns
there is a trade channel, use it traders, leave it out of the white chat

Marhan's Grotto, Fishermans Haven and to a lesser degree the Ice Caves seem to be the casual chat areas. The staging area for the Random areas as well.
Diablo???
I'm just glad I still have my private unpolluted spot on the map, Port Sledge.
... I probably shouldn't have mentioned that.

Well, it seems pretty obvious to me that the "WTB" and "WTS" local chat spammers are not the brightest crayons in the box, and logically we can assume they don't even look at Riverside Inn that much (they might all be in the buy/sell forums or not on the forums at all)
So here's an idea: why don't we compile a list of places where we all hang out? Most of the people who post here are above room-temperature I.Q., and i'm sure often get bored in-game periodically and just want to chat. Call it a GWGuru meet-n'-greet if you like
So far i've heard:
Fisherman's
Port Sledge
Ice Tooth
(to a lesser extent) Grotto

@complaining about trading spammers
Thats true, in very many other MMORPG's the've switched to setting up your own little shop, and that wouldn't be a bad idea I think.
I mean, trying to sell stuff in droks is a mather of luck, even if there is a buyer, they almost spam just as hard WTB [instert random weapon]!!!!!!1!!!etc.
And with shops its not waiting, continuously spamming, for a buyer.
Just leave the computer on when going to school/work, or leave guild wars running while you do some internet browsing or something.
Isn't that much better?
By the way, pre is still my favourite, due the non-sense converstions about pigs or whatever
