Dark escape ends if you hit with an attack and shadow refuge only gives the bonus heal if attacking.
Without the extra heal at the end shadow refuge is healing breeze that will be up for half the time.

also, if you go a/mo you have the possibility of taking Contemplation of Purity, which goes well with Aura of Displacement, as you can get out fast and lose a hexaswell, if you've got more than one, use shadow refuge, then CoP when shadow refuge is about to run out = teleported to saftey and lost 2 hexes.
ive seem this combo used to very good effect, as it has hex removal and ties in exactly with the assassin hit and run tactics.

I'm on my 3rd rebuild of my assassin, and this time I've opted for A/Mo and only so I have access of a hard res for PvE. I have tried Rit and Mes as secondarys and found no use for the additional skills at all. What I've found is its all very good picking the skills you want for the final build, but actually getting them can be a right pain in the rear. So this time around I plan to play the assassin the way i like playing him and still feel like my secondary class is of some use as I res my party after I run away screaming like a little girl.... <- Trying to get my survivor title without any of my guildies power leveling me

oh that aura of displacement is funny. See a sinner shadow stepping a Mesmer. Mesmer goes click with Shatter enchantment and sinner is gone with a boo-boo^^.

i think your all wrong. the good ol CoP/AoD assassin works just fine for me and has never failed me. sure it lacks base heals but what doesnt? the point of an assassin is get in, kill, get out, not stay for tea and crumpets with a warrior. if you can jump in kill someone and jump out then you dont need your fancy heals and enchants which can be shattered and drained just as easy as AoD. plus and dark escape cover the armor problems and shadow refuge helps if you time it with CoP.

oh no, when I meant A/Me, I meant: steal their AoD and use it against them. They wont use CoP when you're done with them^^
