Nuke the slum area?
aron searle
Ok ive gotten really close to the end level now.
I have to say from my personal experiance the game would be 5x better if the slum area was simply deleted from the map, even if it meant no replacement area and a shorter game.
I found it ugly as sin after half an hour, repatative (run to A then to B then to C then to A), and i didnt like the maze like quality.
Once i got out of that area, i really enjoyed the game a heck of alot more, and it wasnt just because it actually looked nice, but because i wasnt getting lost so much, or spending as much time pointlessly walking.
Why do i bring this up, well they are working on chapter 3. And i have to be honest i cant even bring myself to bring over my second toon and slog through that area again, i wont be buying chapter 3 if i hear it does another of these really dull areas again.
Am i pointlessly whingeing?
Or do you agree?

I hated the slums at first as well, the whole 2-layer map deal was very confusing, but I later got the hang of it and now I don't mind it as much.
Fact of the matter is, you can't ask Anet to delete something just becuase it frustrates you, especially when it's not something bugged/broken.

I think its fine, i mean you don't stay there for long do you? Whats to complain about, it a few mins to get from one side to the other.. the battles aren't too hard.

Aye, nuke and burn.
I haven't met anyone, in game or here at forums, who enjoyed the City. When we reached the Pongmei Valley, our entire party was overjoyed. Then when Togo told us to return, everyone went "nooooo!"
I still don't get how such horrible area as the City and such awesome one as the Jade Sea can co-exist in one game.

I think your thinking of a different area to me, the slum covers half the game area. I dont remember its actual name, but its basicly that city area full of those stacked slummy huts, on the map its the brown smear above the lake area.

I didnt mind it I did it pretty easily

I can understand why some people wouldn't like the area, but it was interesting! Was nice to see something a bit different in GW and the maze-like map design actually made you think, as apposed to just running in a line to where u wanted to be at.
Sure, it confused me for a while, but once sussed, I actually liked that place...

Every year at E3 they have an art exhibit featuring frames from video games. The aerial view of that slum is in this years exhibit. Check it out here..

I think the slums & undercity fits well into the city. It's just how I imagined it

I LOVE the whole city area, I think it is totally fantastic.
The sheer massive scale of the city is very impressive, and it perfectly nails the "vibe" of over-crowded Eastern cities. In fact it kinda makes me think of a Blade Runner/Star Wars Coruscant-type of huge city but done in a fantasy Eastern setting.
The only problem I have with the city is that it tends to slow my computer down a bit, making interupts with my Mesmer very tricky, but I still love it.
It doesn't top the Jade Sea though, that is certainly my favourite area in all of Guild Wars so far.
However, I would agree that I would not like to see another environment that looks the same in Chapter 3. ANet did a great job coming up with original environments for Factions, let's hope they are equally innovative in Chapter 3...

I like it a bit less than the other areas, but enjoyed it as well. I'm bored faster of the Shing Jae island, every game has grass and hills levels.

My main problem with the city is the quests. Run to A, run to B (on the other side of the map), run back to A, run to C (in another area).
Every. Single. Fricking. Quest.
Other than that I hate the Vizunah Square mission so much, on so many levels, that I've never got out of the city, and frankly doubt I ever will.

I really hate the slums... Since I am still waiting for my CE I haven't escaped them yet... Can anyone post some screenies of the post-slum part of the game?

The city is an awesome place in the game. Sure, I got sick of it and wanted to escape, but it was still a great part of the map. And I'll be going back when I've finished to complete some areas I skipped past, like the Undercity.

I can't stay behind with this -- the City is absolutely amazing, sometimes I just take henchies and go on a sightseeing trip making screenshots like some fascinated tourist. Yeah, some quests really are a bit boring, but with that wonderful city structure all around I really don't mind doing them at all. I was allways dreaming about some really huge, complicated, overcrouded city in some MMO game and finally it's here. It's like an organism, you can almost see growing new huts up every day on every free place... Navigation is sometimes difficult, but the atmosphere of really big, socially divided city stricken with unknown epidemic is just amazing.

I played a Tyrian character through the slums really fast. I didn't more than a few side quest at all because they're boring as hell. With over 120 skill points pooled I didn't need the rewards.
My ritualist however, is still stuck in there. And boy does she need the quest rewards, she's continually out of skill points. However, the slums and their boring quests sap the desire to play out of me within a few minutes of logging on. And that's even without the annoyance of henchmen getting stuck on peasants. The tedium is really astounding. It's highly unlikely I'll ever start a second character on Shing Jae island, since running is also not an option thanks to all those closed gates.
So, yes, I agree.

The city explains why there are so many afflicted, but of course thats not the point of this thread.
I like the city, I don't think it's beautiful or anything, but it's got alot of realism, and being the slums and the crappiness of the housing shows the realism of what is happening in Cantha. I can't wait till the lore section of this website is well developed, it'll be a good read^^.

the entire area lookind like it was built with photoshop cut and pasting the same texture over and over....
it felt like a "filler" area with no real content....
Most everyone I know couldn't wait to get the hell out of there....I agreed...
It's not that I mind the concept of a slumy city.....just how is was executed was poorly done.
Anet should take a lesson from other games who have done it successfuly....Omicron the nomad soul....syndicate wars.....
update the city so it is not the same smear of Sh^t brown texture over and over...

I actually very much enjoy the city! The dingy, overcrowded, dirty slum feeling. Its great. I dont mind running back nd forth with stuff at all actually.

I absolutely *LOVE* Kaineng.
It reminds me of Midgard in FF7, especially the feelings I got when I finally left the city for the very first time...!!!
It also reminds me of City of Heroes, which I played for quite a while and enjoyed.
It certainly isn't your "typical" RPG setting, but I don't think that's a bad thing. It's not to experience something new every once in a while. We've all seen fantasy games happening in mountains, forests, and deserts already <.<

As much as I dislike hitting dead ends and turning around repeatedlty it is something different. I like that aspect of the game, something different, it's new and fresh.

I lurve the city. Reminds me of manila....hong kong....home ~~~~<3
o.o All its missing are vendors that are selling chickens.
Seriously, if you dislike this environment in the game, dont ever plan to visit: Hong Kong, Tokyo, Manila, or even NYC >.> Crowded confusing dirty...but full of fun.

Im suprised anyone actually like its, different folks different strokes.
Seems theres so far an even love / hate thing going on.

I too would prefer to get an entire map with wide open beautiful vistas... but I guess if that was reality no one would venture far from the village.

i hate the ghetto/slum area with a passion, puts me off playing another character through it and im currently rushing my ele through as fast as i can in bearable doses

City sucks ass... I did the quests that make me run around for 3 hours. Not going to do them again with other characters. I don't need skill points or experience so :P
Waste of time.
I like the graphics, they are ok. The gameplay sucks.

hiroshima but then 10x whorse!! i'd love to see that freaking city being burned down woohooo! i'd be the best update ever :P
Dr Strangelove
I kinda liked some parts of the vity. Don't get me wrong, the "Cross Country Wars" aspect of many of the quests got on my nerves too. I liked the giant well organized mobs, it seemed like the difficulty took a definite downward spiral after leaving them all behind. Vizunah square was one of my favorite missions. I did it with one group only as a fire nuker. Best mission in the game for a nuker. It kinda reminded me of Halo with the flood or Resident Evil. Except this time I have a flame thrower .
IKNOW
The slum area is awful.
It's not the planning of the area that I don't like, it's the over-used texture that's on every single building.
Just reeks of lazyness.

ABSOLUTELY agree, having been in some of these type cities in various parts of the world...nicely captures the VIBE and atmosphere...which is part of what the game is about. I almost could feel myself keeping my hand on my wallet at times while exploring about, continually gawking over my shoulder. Good job devs!
I further must agree that I would like to see continued innovation in coming Chapters, not a cut and paste.
