Is Factions worth it?
healthsoldier0570
I am not sure whether I should even buy Factions. I am a highschool kid, so I don't have a lot of money because I play cross-country and track, so I don't have any time to get a job. I also get a GPA of round 3.8 or something like that. Should I waste my little money I have on it? It sounds fun, but I have heard that from people who have not even played the first chapter. I want someone experienced to give me some advice.
Nominal_Fee
It's not, it's far worse than Prophecies. Get Oblivion or WoW instead (those $15 are worth it, don't listen to what Anet's fanboys say).

You'll find more opinions here than arseholes. Only you can decide for sure.
Mine, well worth it. It's stunning, and if you take your time you'll find the content is actually huge. I'd personally highly recommend it. It's highly enjoyable.

Yes factions is great, but i think that propecies might be better to start of with.

HS, if you're more of a solo player, I wouldn't yet. Stay with the original Prophecies for a bit, save the money for something else. Wait until we can tell if Factions gets better, or if ANet leaves it as it is--frustratingly masochistic. You will end up paying for pain.
However, if you're part of a guild like I am, then it is worth it. Even with all the problems, I love loggin on with my mate, and together her and I play with some real life friends as well as friends from our message board. Being together makes it that much more fun.

omg If you're getting a 3.8 gpa stay the hell away from Factions or any MMO for that matter. Your grades will drop faster than the price of HoD swords.

Well, you could try doing what one of my guildies does. He has told us his schedule, and now we all REFUSE to party with him or even talk to him after midnight during school. We abuse him until he logs offline. Positive Peer Pressure ftw.

Either way, I'd try Prophecies first to see if you like the GW model. It's probably cheaper than Factions, and it's a good game.

Factions is better than Prophecies because it offers more challenge and battles therefore have more action. Now I really enjoy killing PvE enemies because you have to think a bit. Graphics have improved, new professions, new skills, new cool weapons and armors, etc.
Unfortunately PvP side has been disappoinment because of ruined 12 vs 12 alliance battles. Hopefully they will change it. PvE keeps me busy for couple weeks but after then I wish Anet will do something to 12vs12 :frown:
I have played Prophecies since May 2005 so I'm probably experienced GW player.
BTW: Factions is 28 euros at play.com but don't buy there. Too cheap!

Pros: With your smarts you will love the game focus being on smart playing and not hours leveling. I highly recommend you get the first version - it was way more fun and filled with experienced people and no game glitches...right now Factions has a lot of issues to fix. You might get lucky and find a cheap pre owned copy on ebay and I recommend the prima guide which you can find there too or in Half Price books stores to tell you everything...of course Guru being free and super informative - the book you can just have open to keep you from slowing down the computer at the same time. It is alot of fun and a great way to be social. That being said:
Cons: You may - like I - fall in love with it like most people! You will want to play for hours and hours - It is like discovering a new sport ! This is coming from a former multiple scholarship recipient in both sports and academics so think it over hard if you are low in the discipline area - especially if you are a fan of fantasy themed movies! This game is ranked one of the top online role playing games for a reason heh heh. But look on the bright side - If you get super addicted you as a young student will have more time in your life now than any other time to try and join a guild that can win the $100,000 World Championship - all for being good at a computer game

GuildWars:Factions was more than worth it for me. Since I loved the first game I have loved the content in this game. People say its more of the same, yet I think its very different. 16 people missions are great. And so are many other things. A few sad things, there are very few people in some of the later missions so getting a group is hard. In the 16player missions you have to count on the other team to do its part. And leveling to 20 was way to fast even for me. But I hate grind, I hate fees, and I think this is much more fun than WoW FF11 and many other Play2Play games.

But back on topic, personally I don't think Factions is worth it. I bought Factions, and have been playing Prophecies almost exclusively...

Don't get this game unless you want your average to drop. MMO are like crack cocaine, stay away from GW.

As with any new game, they make changes so there are aspects that are different from the 1st game, some people will like or hate the new things.
I'm a casual player, mostly pve, and I'm slowly going through Factions. I'm not one for rushing. I really enjoy it and have no regrets about buying.
Everything is more "compact" lots of stuff to do in the same area (and having a side of effect of going to A -> B -> C -> running around). Also, it's designed to get you to 15+ at the starting isle, once you enter the city it's designed for high level content (20+).
Skills are down differently. They give you a small set and you have to buy everyone after that. The good news is the xp rewards and gold rewards are much greater to compensate for it.
In the radio interview, Rit and Assassin were designed to be "specialized" character vs the diversity of the core classes so they are a bit harder to play compared to a core class.
Since I got GW:F, I've been playing almost in it vs GW

Thanx for the info guys. I have Prophecies and I am pleased with it. I beat it only with one character, so I still need some experience. I will probably buy Factions this coming Christmas or something like that, just so I can have some time to get better and wait for Factions price to drop. If I don't have Factions, can I still get Birthday Presents (minipets)? After reading all of thee, I have to think that Factions is not as fun or even as good as the first chapter, so I will just practice up playing Prophecies. THANKS GUYS!!!

2) Rather, it's still too soon to tell if Factions is gonna be as good as Prophecies was; but either way, waiting is probably best. Besides, you only beat Prophecies on one character? There's still a lot for you ta do, man. Every been to the Hall of Heroes, or the Fissure of Woe? Underworld? Tombs? Man... yeah, you definitely don't need a new game yet. Finish the one you're on! ^_^
healthsoldier0570
I have been to the UW with my warrior twice and it is tought for me. I am skilled even though I have only beat the game once. I could probably handle Factions, but I want to know if the overall game play is good enough to buy it or not. If I happen to have $50 in my pocket, then I will buy it. I am not going to go out of my way to get it. I would like to know what the Fissure of Woe is. How do I get to the Hall of Heroes? Do I get there by beating the Vision of the Glint quest (I haven't beat that yet)? What can I do there?
coldplay
No, Factions is not worth $49.99
healthsoldier0570
I am not going to buy Factions, I have decided. I am already having so much fun with Prophecies, so why ruin it with a game that might suck?
MSecorsky
Well, no one can force you, but you're missing out. The content is equal to Prophecies (if you actually do it...), the play improved and the new scenery quite nice. Easily worth the 50 imo. However, the doom-and-gloomers have ruined the experience for you, and for that I am sorry.

I'm in high school, and last year I had a 4.40 GPA. This year (I've been playing guild wars since ~a month after it came out), I have almost 900 hours and a 4.325 GPA (I had one B in an honors class). This doesn't seem like much, but I've noticed I've become extremely lazy as in: I always play gw after school now and I'm really annoyed if I don't have time in the night before bed to play gw. Basically, it hasn't appeared to affect me that much, but I swear I've become more lazy (but maybe it's just natural and has nothing to do with gw). However, gw does occupy almost all of my free time now when it used to be reading and playing drums mostly.
And oh yeah, I'm not that far in, but I'm enjoying Factions.
healthsoldier0570
It is not school that keeps me from getting Factions. I am a full time athlete. I play cross-country, track, and football. Actually, I just blew out my knee, so I can't play football anymore, but I am still playing cross-country and track. I just don't have much time for Prophecies none the less Factions.

And yes, the play is improved. The quests are more challenging, the henches AI improved enough to make them interesting to run with, the rewards are better, the skill acquisition means is improved... all around, it's better than Prophecies.
No cookie for you.

I've played Factions to death over the past week since release and beat it a few days ago, and I can honestly say that it is absolutely nowhere near the level of Prophecies if we are going to compare the 2 as seperate games. There is just nowhere near as much content or variety in Factions. Now if you've already played Prophecies to death and are looking for an expansion to that, then sure it's worth it if you need more GW to burn some time on, as long don't go in expecting get as much out of it as the original like I was, and am therefore very dissapointed.
They basically sold Factions as a seperate game, and almost as a sequel, and there is just not enough here for it to be considered that. Understanding they will be coming out with one of these every 6 months, that's a good deal and am not complaining about that plan at all. I'll keep buying them. But the mistake they made was making us think this was this massive new game like the original, and it's really just not. It's really just an expansion that is the price of a full game, and can be played without the original. But honestly I feel bad for those that never played the original and bought this expecting something just like the original, when in fact it's not.
Overall, I am dissapointed in it's lack of depth and content, but am still satisfied now that i've beaten it and have come to realize this is nothing more than a standalone expansion and will be getting another in October.

I nearly didn't buy it, but I must say I'm enjoying Factions a lot. It is quite different from the first episode, quests are less boring and promotions happen fast.
I uninstalled Oblivion for Factions, so I guess I would say it is a better game.

Are there really going to be a new one every six months? Hearing that kind of makes me feel disappointed. I will feel like I wasted a bunch of money on a game when a new one comes out six months later.

2. It will almost definately be longer than that, trust me.
And I think a lot of people missed the point here...there is nothing to be concerned about grade-wise, seeing as the OP has had GWP.
As for me, meh..I don't know. The sequel is almost never as good as the original (for anything) but GWF is still new to me to say whether or not its worth it. I can't count how many times GWP made me want to quit when I was still getting used to it..etc.

LOL Just a joke about grades people. I'm in college and my grades are fine after buying Factions. Just commenting on some peoples time commitment.
IMHO, Factions is great. I havent been able to play the game the whole way through yet like some of these other crazy super gamers, but im nearly off of the "pre-sear" island with my rit and just got "closer to the stars" with my Tyrian Character. If you go in expecting to much, you will be dissapointed, as many other poster's here are. I think it's a pretty decent game to spend my nights and weekends on.

There should be updates to Cantha within 6 months but a whole new game should come out next year. I think you should definetly get Factions after the summer, when you are free probably and working or something. Though x-mas might not bee too late to get Factions for you.
I love GW:Faction. I'm taking my time with it and I admit they do need to fix somethings in the game.
So keep it straight forward- Enjoy what you have now, just don't wait too long to get Factions. Besides even if you wanted to start the new professions the runes are expensive if you are not a rich player. If you wait to get the game later the prices would eventually go down.

No, it's not worth it at full price.

Yes, factions is great... if you enjoy being forced to play every primary quest to continue to the next mission and being forced to do every mission. In factions there is No skipping. both good and bad. If you don't like playing the campaign with all your characters don't get factions.
However, now there are gold(money not weapons) awards in quests and missions. You actually make a little gold as you play the campaign. Also new skills give new possiblities. You also level much faster. You spend way more time as a level 20. This both makes it more challenging and more fun.
If you have no way to get the money for it now, get it when you someday get a way to make money. You may like it.

That all sounds good. My mom owes me $40, so I will do some chores for my dad and earn the rest and buy it real quick. Since I have the extra money, why not buy it?
nimloth32
well, there is no need to buy every expansion available to proceed the game..and you can still play GW..

i love the effect it has on my storage. This game has had the ability to make me go from 500k to 10k in less then 2 hours. It feels good to be one of the lesser fortuned
I have a 2.9 GPA and recently my monitor stopped working and all of a sudden i started doing good. I had taken 2 tests i was sure i failed and got A's on both, life seems better and i get better grades with no games. This makes me hate life.

Didn't you have something less important to uninstall, like... Microsoft Word?
I have a decent amount of time in Factions so far, and it's worth the purchasing price, IMO. Less grind to start off with, dive straight into tougher missions, et cetera. Not to mention the environment (before and after the city, that is) is very nice. City was forgettable, reminded me of postsear ascalon in many ways.
healthsoldier0570
That is one of the main reasons I want to buy Factions, because of the scenery. I think the city idea is cool. It looked more oriental in the trailer.

yea i say don't buy its yea factions is great and all but if u think about it its not that differnent..... wow new models and new pvp? yea its great i would love... that but is it worth 50 bucks?? would u really pay just to have new armors, yea sum ppl would but you really don't have all the time to sit there and play..... i say go buy sum food with it or save it for new jordans or sumthing
