A beautiful mind behind a beautiful name

I was wondering how some people chose the names they give to their characters, if they care at all, if names might have a personal touch to them etc.

As far as I do know aNet, they clearly seem to favor (or, at least, are not worried about) names, that belong to dictators, terrorists and mass murderers.

So you can easily name your pet "Bin Laden" if you wish.
"Stalin" who killed more than twice as many people than AH did, is no issue.
You can also chose "Idi Amin" for your pet without getting into immediate trouble.

On the other hand they're not at all fond of names that go like "Jewel" e.g., because it contains the phrase "jew", which I find very confusing. Also the name of the messiah of the christian world "Jesus" is banned and cannot be used for a pet name.
"Jehova" on the other hand show no trouble.

But enough about aNet.

The names I chose e.g. usually have an element from nature or at least relate to it.

Ashley Twig e.g. should give her profession as a ranger away easily
Ocean Rivers should have no problem, being identified as a water elementalist
Heather May should've been Mayweed (a medical plant) but "weed" was banned at the time, but the idea of a plantname used for healing purposes was intended to identify her as a monk.

Later on I lost the plant <-> profession connection, but kept up the plant idea with

Violet Yarrow
Samantha Sundew

My current char, a ritualist, Jezebel Amaya has not a plantname, but "amaya", so I've been told, is japanese and means "Night Rain" which, at least, is an element from nature.
Her original 1st name was supposed to be "Jewel", but since aNet seems to hate the term "Jew" for whatever sordid reason, I was forced to pick another.

So what about you. Why did you chose the name that you did?
Or are names totally irrelevant to the majority of GW players?
I sometimes get the impression when I read names like "pigfister" and the like.

My mesmer, Rebecca Siddons, is named after a character from System Shock 2 that only those who have beaten the game would even remember.

Julia Riselem, Fiona Wevlum, and Vorlik Blade are all Skies of Arcadia references.

Golly Orby is a Perry Bible Fellowship reference.

first off, my first name is Hal, so I based all my names off that

my Warrior is Hal Berto after a school nickname

my Monk is Hal O Two after the other game that I frequently play(level 32)

Ranger is named Hal Nlne thousand after the robot in the movie 2001- a space odyssey

and my female ele is named Hal lelujah because everyone rejoices when I join their party

All characters start with Fiery. Also with the certain profession I tend to add the last name as a trait they will do or relating to them. Such as a Monk combine something with healing and protting, which is so hard to think of a word for both :X. As for my warrior Fiery Battousai it's japanese, and not related to that Kenshin person. Level 4 Japanese FTL. >.<

-_- Yes, I'll admit it. I'm an RPer. *gasp* This was my first character's name, and I always use it for woods-y characters. It was perfect for my Ranger.

Monk - Daniel Highwind
Last name is a tribute to Kain from FF4 (called FF2 in America). I wanted a name that sounded all neat and monk-ish and holy, and I liked the sound of Daniel Highwind. Huzzah.

Warrior - Jake Lehnsherr
Jake's my German character ^^ Buff, with light eyes and blond hair trimmed neatly, hehe. Lehnsherr is the name that the germanic X-men character Magneto picked for himself--Eric Magnus Lehnsherr. When a comic-reading friend of mine was rambling, I was like OMG BEST NAME EVER.

Ritualist - Michael Caedmon
Caedmon is Celtic for "wise warrior". I like the sound of it--again, it's a name I've used in RPing before. Michael just seemed to fit.

PvPs - Commander Redly
Hmmmmmmmm.......

My main character is Rayinzar Stormcloud, Prince of Llanowar (From Magic ), son of Orion and Ariel Stormcloud, and descendant of the mighty Ravenshore Stormcloud. IT's a very old D&D Character I made (Cleric) and is now used for almost all my Fantasy outings Being a MEsmer was a sort of necessity, the green was vaguely elven, and the Monk skin was just not right

My Elementalist/Monk is Ashaman R'anakha (' unfortunately missing from the name ), based on a healing Ashaman from the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan, and mixing in Anakha from Eddings because I wasn't feeling very inspired Now that I know Ritualists have "Channeling" I may well secondary class that way, or make a Rit/* someday as another Asha, with a more unique second name

My last is a Warrior/Necro named Nagash Londragath, that has for years been the dreaded Vampire Lord in my own fantasy world of such things and Ninjas Of course he is just starting out, but there are great plans to make him carry out a proper storyline and good/evil development phase Oh, and I made the name up in a random Hotmail name creation burst many years ago

My Mesmer's pet is named Luna and is a Melandru's Stalker. Name from Rayinzar's horse in D&D

My Ritualist is named Lirael Saraneth, from the Abhorsen Trilogy by Garth Nix. Where in the books, Lirael is a necromancer that controls spirits, and Saraneth is a bell that is used to 'bind' spirits. I thought that was approriate for my Ritualist, as Ritualists bind spirits.

It's ironic how ANET bans words like 'Jewel', but permits words such as 'jizz'. I guess immaturity and crudeness don't hold a candle to a name that might have a religious word in it.

If I am forming a PUG, and I see a name like 'pigfister' or of the like, I won't invite them in my party, just because the name is immature.

Well mine are based on Kaguya Houraisan from Imperishable Night, a vertical shooter. Aaand IN was based on Japanese folklore Kaguya-hime.

I kept the Kaguya-name on all my alts, tho some of the surnames are from IN as well, Kaguya Yagokoro who is my ranger, and Kaguya Kirisame who is my Ele, mainly due to the Marisa's Spark [Spark doesn't like direct linking, copypaste the url again and it works :P]. ^^

Rest of my Kaguyas are translated from English to Japanese, assassin Yorunoha (Blade of the Night) and mesmer Yumehari ("Dreamneedle") so they are more of less 'original'.. My warrior sorta deviates from the theme with English last name Dreamblade. Will see what names my new charas get when the new slots are available :P

Simms Agere - N/Me Named after a D&D necromancer I used, where latin-verb-y family names and monosyllabic first names.

Jiss Kege - W/R Same reason as Simms.

Tretin Claudius - Me/Mo I made him to look like an old dandy (gray hair included) and chose a fairly traditional name for him that seemed to match.

Zemfir Listya - R/Me Inspiried by the Russian rock diva Zimfira and the Russian word for leaf. I dropped the A from the first name to prevent both from ending in A.

Dristi Viraj - E/Rt I made her to look Indian and gave her an Hindu-y name.

Houn Ngana - Rt/N I made him look like a Vudoun and he has a name that elicits that.

I named my crab Mr Crabulous and my tiger Kittyfingers. <3

Bunny Faddenholsts

Im very happy with the name because its very playful (BUNNY! ^_^) and the last name is very unique. In fact, if you google "Faddenholsts" you will come up with GWG When i got factions, i made an older sister for her, my monk Duckie Faddenholsts.

Got some nice ideas there guys. I'm a firm believer in theming your characters. Ltos of nice ideass ^^ about herbology, games, books there. The number of random char names in GW is a bit of shame. "Running Warrior" "Im an Elementalist" "Your Mum" etc.

My long-term alias is BlueNovember, so that's my first char's name. The rest are all welsh names with "The Welsh" suffixes. Makes it easy for people in the guild to tell who Anwyn The Welsh is without hovering the entry.

I dislike having to learn names of all the chars of other people just so I can recognise them. With a guild of 100+ people, 30+ of which you halls with regularly, it's a bit confusing.

I love Native American cultures (north and south) so I often choose names or use words from those languages to make my names. I just wish I was more adept at learning languages cause I would love to be able to speak them... /sigh

Ah, excellent. I was hoping one of these days I'd stumble across a thread such as this. It's nice to know that some folks put thought behind a character's name. I rarely invite the people with poor name choices, usually because their IQ goes right along with it. :P

That being said, non-rpg like names are ok with me, but as long as they are, at least, amusing. Here's a run-down of my character's names.

Maedai Amarth - Maedai (pronounced May-Day or May Die) is just a nice way of spelling what I knew I do do the most in my very first MMO (or rather...MCO?) - die alot. Amarth is elvish for 'doom'.

Lucas Mortporter - Lucas means light and it sounds nice. Mortporter is a combination of latin words meaning 'death carrier' or 'death bringer'. Yes, he's a necro. :P

Righteous Sarah I - My monk character. The name is the complete opposite of a necromancer, also named Sarah, who was in the guild for a long time. She was the evil one.

Adilya Endlewine - My ranger. her name just hit me out of nowhere and I decided that I had to name a ranger character right then! it flows rather nicely.

Quinn Darly - A former Harry Potter (don't laugh! :P) RPG character. She has a very scottish name for a not-so scottish looking elementalist (I tried though :P). Too bad we can't add freckles on characters.

Tobin Spirit Guide - She's my ritualist. My sister made a ritualist as well, Egon E Spengler. A Ghostbusters refrence, obviously. No one ever gets it. :P

All my characters share the last name of Nitetime, which i've used as a nick for as long as I can remember. Their first names come from various resources, Anezka (monk) from Vampire The Masquerade, Amras (ranger) I got from some elven name translator website which derived from my real name, Wicked I guess came from a M:TG card, others are nicknames of friends for my own amusement.

The hardest was trying to name my newly acquired white tiger. For ages I sat in font of the computer on the Internet looking for inspiration. Gave up so he’s ‘Intel Inside’ as this was the only thing staring at me for hours.

I lately I've been picking my names from mythology, with the same last for a personal famlish feel

Prophecies: Dragonhart, with Hart being my grandmother's maiden name, and dragon, because it sounds cool

Ranger: Diana is theRoman goddes of the hunt, her pet Bastet is the Egyptian cat god of protection.
Warrior: Selene is from Grandia II
Necro: Lillith is the Jewish/Babylonia queen of the undead-succubii, stealer of children, all around not a nice woman (oddly enough I have more rage quits with her that the rest of my characters put together)

Factions: Nian: Chinese for beast

Ele: Fengh Huang, her name was misspelled it should be Feng Huang, one of the four Chinese holy creatures, a pheonix (I didn't catch it untill it was to late, Got my tengu mask)
Rit: Meng Po, the last beurocrat of the Chinese underworld, she gives a potion of forgetfullness the about to be reborn
Monk: Aslan is from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Armand Leblanc (Mesmer) - Originally the name of one of my old White Wolf RPG characters. I needed something stereotypically pretentious and snobby for a mesmer, and thus picked something pretentiously French.

Desiree Delacoeur (Mesmer) - Same as above. Loosely translated, it can mean "Desire of the heart."

Elias Higharrow (Ranger) - Named after one of my favorite Star Trek characters (book series-only), and a surname from the Elf Name Generator.

Sir Binky (Warrior) - Friend's nickname in university.

Leeroy Mcwhammo (PVP Warrior) - ... I don't think this one needs much explaination.

Equus Asinus (Ranger & PVP Alliance Battle character) - Scientific name for "donkey." My packmule character, but I also use her in Alliance battles as a conditions ranger/warrior. Gives me an excuse to use all those spare weapons I keep on her.

Elaan of Troyius (Necro) - Another packmule, grabbed only for the name. Star Trek (Original Series) reference.

Tong Yi Sheng (Monk) - I'm Chinese, and my surname is Tong. "Yi Sheng" is the Chinese Pin Yin for "Doctor." So, "Doctor Tong."

I love it.

Have you not considered, even for a moment, that ANet is trying their best to moderate name abuse? Thats a pretty bold statement to say ANet hates the term "Jew" when in fact they are trying to keep some butthole from naming themself "Jew Hater" or something equally awful. Boo hoo - you had to pick another name. You seem the creative sort, keep putting it to good use! Just put a little more thought into the reasons of "why" before you start making accusations.

Now to keep with the spirit of the topic - My main character is Ischade Anariel. I originally got the name Ischade from a character in a book. It was unusual and just seemed neat to me. So for the last many many years i've had a character in whatever game i've played named Ischade. A few years ago I decided she needed a last name and eventually came up with Anariel.

For my more serious character I tried and Picked a name that is role play in nature. My ranger is named Hunter Sharparrow of course because he uses a bow and the name in general sounds druidic (if there is such a word). Also Hunter is a name that many people actually have either as a first or last name.

My mess around character is my Canthan warrior who I name "The Drunken Samurai" and is a character I plan on being warrior/ritualist with the Drunkard title. Katana in one hand and a jug in the other.

My monk is Deadly Ovation which I got when I couldn't think of a name. I looked around the room for insperation and found it with the Ovation mint chocolates. Didn't have a clear meaning on the word at the time I looked it up and found how well it actually worked. Ovation: 1) Enthusiastic, prolonged applause. 2) A show of public homage or welcome. 3) An ancient Roman victory ceremony of somewhat less importance than a triumph.

I find the second meaning fits best.

Raine Excilia - Mesmer - I really wanted to start my Factions character so I didn't get creative and just took names from two different sources. Raine comes from the game Tales of Symphonia for the Gamecube and PS2. She was the professor, an awesome character as she enforced corporal punishment and was hysterical when she got overly excited about historical remains. Excilia I just gave it a twist from the name Excel from the anime show Excel Saga.
Skye Crimsonfire - Elementalist - My current avatar. Skye was the name of an ex of mine and the name I'd want to give to my daughter. People always mistake Crimsonfire for me being fire, but Air FTW.
Rushina Teadora - Ranger - Teadora was also the name of an ex of mine, but I like the name. Rushina... I forget how I came up with that.
Serenity Vahalia - Monk - I got the name Serenity off of an angel which is pretty appropriate for a Monk's name and no idea where I got Vahalia. I think I was altering Vahalla, the norse hall where vikings went to eat and drink, but that's kind of strange for a monk.

Last two, Alana Larkin and Christie Sescerano, I just like the names.

Ranger: John Muir - Famous 19th century Californian conservationist

Pet name: My spider is named Peter Parker, aren't I clever?

Elementalist: Dr Strangelove - He's a nuker... get it?

Necro: Mola Ram - The name of the guy from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom who ripped people's hearts out. Good times.

Mesmer: Doctor Emmet Brown - Fire up the flux capacitor

Monk: Dr Frankenberry - No reason

Warrior/PVP slot - The Dan Slayer - A guildie of mine (Dan) made a 100k bet that no other warrior could beat his warrior in a 1v1. Suffice to say, he's been farming for the last couple days .

Nobeard the Pirate - My very first character, a W/N. He lasted a couple hours at most
Nanook of the North - I tried to make a warrior again but got bored. The name comes from a far side comic
General Chicken - A factions warrior to see if they were still boring. They were. General chicken = tasty chinese food and stellar warrior name.
Sub Zero Wins - Assassin, got bored, named after Sub Zero from MK
Doc Wily - FPE character, named after the villain from Mega Man

Well my first character was blood brooder, it seemed like a dark looking character probably better suited to a nercro then a warrior.
Voices in the wind- Thats my ranger, i thought it was pretty cut and dry until people would pm me in game and ask if my name meant i was crazy.
Atomic Nuker- Thats my fire ele
Malkavian Delight- I have a love for vampires and malkavians are vampires that have a split personaility so i figured it would be a good name for my monk, seeing how i change to healing/smiting/55/protection all the time never making up my mind
Malkichi Mordichi- My ss necro..seemed like a fitting dark name at the time

my others aren't so. Uniden Soulstealer - not very unique, every necro seems to have Soulstealer these days and Uniden DID originate from a phone at the time (!), but this was my character many many many years ago in the times when MUDs ruled the internet.

Himeros of Erotes, my ritualist - Well, it's greek, a god - look it up if you wish
Will O The Wisps (PvP) - Again, mythological, but oh-so-fitting for a killer

Well mine is pretty simple. My middle name is Rose and I tend to use it in all the games that I play. I have a whole bouquet of characters with Rose somewhere in their name.

Rose Thornz is my beloved first character an elementalist, at the time Rose Thorn was not available but I later got it and made a monk. Crown of Roses is my ranger with the flowery hairdo. Enchanting Rose is my primary monk. Cursed Rose is my cute and scary necro. Barbed Rose is my warrior used it because I kept calling her a barb, short for Barbarian. Rose Ring is my ritualist named her that cause she always turns in a cricle when casting spells. Rose Daggerdance is my squishy assassin. Red Rose Petals and Priceless Rose I keep remaking. They are not really complex names but I like them.

Warrior: Divisor The Divine - She used to be a paladin
Monk: How Uninteresting - What my old GW friend used to always say.. He quit though.

I got the name Divisor from Unreal Tournament, it's the name of a bot.

I have two healers named after pain medicines:

Morie Feen (I tried Morie Phine but "Phine" just didn't look right)
Lorie Tab

A N/Mo named Morie Fiend (She's a MM)

A Whammo named Harmie Ofone (after USArmy's Army of One)

Sadly, no one seems to make the connection with my healers and their names...

And of course my very hot (aren't all the female characters hot?) Whammo- Fawn Dul...

-Infinity Lad (ranger) is taken from Retarted Animal Babies (no link since its highly offensive).

-Caius Celsus (monk) is a mixture of Caius Pliny and Cornelius Celsus, great physicians of their time.

-Tribal Convictions (ritualist) is a Voivod song.

-Vibrant Hues (warrior) is my response to a friend that said I was gay for having male characters.

-Katil Argus (assassin) is just some fruity RP shit I came up with so PvE players would party with me.

Well Hyro Yamaguchi is a thing I don't use anymore, but I still use the Hyro though for every character.

I wanted an asian sounding name, and since my name irl is Hylke, I changed it into Hyro.
So no deep thoughts about my name, even though I intend to name a character after my favorite philosphist; immanuel kant, but that isn't a very cool sounding name, that will only be understood by few.

I just make them up, but characters of the same profession usually share the same last name:

mesmers: De Lyon
monks: Moonsalve
rangers: Swiftfoot
elems: Stormsinger
assassins: Shadowstrike
necros: Shadowsun

Only my warriors have different last names (Strongarm and Brienne).

My Tyria characters are all surnamed "Thel" because of William Blake's Book of Thel, one of my favourite Blake creations. It's very haunting so it suited my necro, then the others just kinda adopted it too.

Necro is Kahlindra Thel- just my normal D&D name.

Warrior is Britomart and Ranger is Satyrane- two characters from Edmund Spenser's Faerie Queene (ya I was writing my thesis while I made them and it shows ) In the poem Britomart is an uber female warrior, and Satyrane is a half-satyr knight who lives in the wilds.

My Canthan characters aren't so well thought out- they are surnamed Nocturna because it has connotations both of "nocturnal" and "nocturne", so musical and dark...which I like. Ele is Raethlyn which is just D&D faff, and Mes is Shaera- I like the "ae" in them- makes them look related.

Here goes...

1: Rena Sapphireblade - This is the name of my first RP character, a rougueish half elf with a taste for fighting and precious gems, it's stuck ever since. Naturally, she has ice blue hair, ice blue armour and an ice blue sword. E/W as her GW proffession, if you were interested.

2: Krysten Riega (pr: riYeaga) A name I came up with straight off the top of my head, really. It took some time, and some discussion with my friends as to how it's pronounced, too, but in the end, we decided on the pronunciation above.

3: Evil Aimee - Okay, this one was a no brainer, as I wanted to make a smiting monk, so she was evil, because she hasn't ever gone healing or prot in her 8 months and she was Aimee because imo it sounds cute.

4: Mina Sunfire - Mina is my assassin. I wanted an asian name for her, but nothing immediately obvious: Mina came to mind and the sunfire was just a surname i used on an aborted prophecies elementalist. No sooner did I get to the undercity than I realised I had a boss named after me

5: Evil Xiang - my canthan monk, who is the exact oposite of Aimee, a pure healer. Since my first monk was evil, i decided to make a habit of having evil monks The Xiang came from Xiang being a common asian name - to the point of an in game NPC being called First Mate Xiang.

6: Reika Sapphireblade - My second account's Warrior/Elementalist gained the honour of being my first character's kin. I chose Reika as I liked the sound of it. (Reika is a popular Japanese given name.)

7: Eleanor Chanservant - Her first name is a take on Elena, which is a popular, (too popular,) name in GW. The second name? Only members of the cult are alowed to know that.

8: Setsuna Katsumiki - My long awaited Ranger, Setsuna is the idea of transience or a fleeting existance, this seemed an ideal name for a ranger who would flit all over the land, only ever stopping momentarily to rest before ceasing to exist there and having moved on. The surname was off the top of my head, but Katsu means cutlet and miki means flower stalk. Make of that what you will. ;/

9: Takara Kirinfang - Takara means 'treasure' or 'precious object' in Japanese and this seemed an ideal name to give to a canthan mesmer. Kirinfang? Kirin's Fang? Now can anyone guess what thats a reference from? first one to guess correctly gets a cookie (hint: it's a popular slash em up with 5 instalments so far, the kirin fang is a weapon of... well, that would give it away ;D )

10: Aerwin Starweaver - The name of another of my roleplaying characters, a refined elven princess with an unnatural liking of war and battle. In GW she is my permanent presearing character. I dont ever play her anymore though.

11: PvP slot currently occupied by: I Sploit Dead Peeps. Yeah. Minion master. Moving on...

12: The secret hidden character you unlock by beating Shiro solo without any special powers, finding Gwen and convincing the Lich Lord that invading Cantha would be SO MUCH MORE FUN, hence gaining you the 'O Rly?' title. ;p
Actually, it's my emo ritualist, but enough said about that.

My name is the result of extensive research into uncommon names that have not been trademarked in the US or used much online. I wanted a name that is unique, available for the various instant messengers, available as domain, and naturally appealing to me.

The name of my pet follows the uncommon name idea. I was looking for a name that gives my pet justice and still goes well with the name of the main character.

Ranger: Aithne Stormraven (first name is old celtic)
Necro (blood): Malice Wyrmscale
Necro (curses): Maggie Blacktongue
Ritualist: Ruby Tsunami (red wave...erm...a bit cheesy)
Warrior: Ursula Stilts (first name is Mother Bear...Stilts because I made her tall as character gen would let me)

If I don't pick something Celtic or Nordish, I try at least to be thoughtful...

My current pet: white Tiger named Argus

Typically I put a bit of thought into a character...I've deleted them if the name didn't feel right after a while...puts me 4 months behind on a birthday gift, but so-be-it.

I have been disappointed a time or two with spending a long time trying to make up a name only to find someone else already thought of it...I can't think of any names ever "disallowed" except when trying to use "pussy" in a stalkers name...nothing as immature as the Strider, just "Bad Ol Pussytat"...a tweety reference....first it was too long so I shortened it to "Bad Pussytat" and it was disallowed...maybe I'll just go with Sylvester...hmmmm...

I keep getting more and more surprised at just how idiotic some posters can be.

Anet FAVOURS the names of dictators, criminals and mass murderers because they don't BLOCK them? That is roughly along the same lines as saying "I must like Doritos, because I don't feel compelled to go to the supermarket and burn their entire stock of them."

Did it ever occur to you that multiple in the world may share the same name? Just because someone who happened to go by certain name did something terrible does not then taint that name.
