My new monk uses 2 crafter staffs, a ‘20/20 healing prayers, +5 energy, +30hp’ & a ‘20/20 healing prayers, +60hp’.

I’ll admit they look terrible but to buy 2 perfect gold staffs with these specs would probably cost 10 times, or more, what it cost to craft these two.

I very rarely notice what other players are ‘wielding’ and I’m sure my teams mates could nor care less what I was using as long as they stayed alive, as I don’t really care about theirs if they are getting the job done. The exception being the visually obvious ones such as storm bows, chaos axes and the like, then I’ll notice briefly.

So, are you crafter or are you the must have type?

(thoughts on weapons only please as I myself can be a bit of a tart with armour).

I never buy weapons, only sell.

Nowadays crafters can make perfect stat weapons/items so I dont see much need to spend 100K just on looks not to mention I personally prefer (for instance) the Katana skin to something like a wicked or gothic sword but thats taste.

If there is a green or gold I really want I'll try to get it for myself, that is, the hard way by getting it to drop for me.

I would be far happier being in a PuG and noticing a team mate with a collectors Holy Staff, rather than a Brohn's Staff. Why? The Brohn's may look cooler, but the collectors has the better stats. And it is ALL about the stats.

For me it's all about the stats as well. Untill I find something along the way, I always use collectors/crafters. There are skins out there I would love to have, but I wait for them to drop.

Yep, I fully agree.

Maybe they're overdoing this though.. There's barely anything that you can't get easily now when it comes to stats.

One of the things that was discussed in depth way back prior to Guild Wars initial release was that this game was going to be different. It was going to depend MUCH more on the proper use of various skills and team builds than it was on "elite" weapons and items. Anet and NCSoft also said that the really "good stuff" would be readily acheivable for even the casual player.

Well, I do believe that they have maintained that premise. I vary....some items I like the skin, but frankly, if it does not have the stats to go with it...what is the point? I have used largely collectors type items (including armor in numerous cases) for the 1+ year that I have played. The stats are usually maxed and the item is cheap and/or free.

Way to go Anet. Keep it up. I dig this game as much now as I ever have.

I still like the game I'm more busy finding new builds (especially since the new Factions skills), doing quests, doing missions, leveling, PvP'ing etc, but I'd still like to see some more items that are really special, and that cost you hours to grind or something, just so I have something to farm in PvE

I use either a modded collectors item or greens if theyre exactly what I'm looking for (only Sskias Sword and Kepkhets Refuge *probably spelt wrong* has been so far though - there is a green curses staff 20/20 +5energy +1(20%)curses I believe, which is nice, but my collectors staff is already the same as that).

Some people that play have incredible amounts of money, so if they can afford to buy the really nice skinned stuff to customise it then fair play to them, but I probably wouldn't be paying much attention to what weapon theyre holding playing monk most of the time (using 20/20 heal collectors staff with +5 energy and +1(20%) healing)

Usually if I want to use/customise a weapon I go for green/collectors, all the decent golds I get I try to sell hehe

I care about my own weapon skins. I think it's more fun playing with an awesome looking character than with some wooden-stick char. Other people may not care about it, but I do.

stats are still more important tho. 1st I always get collector's weapon, then I go and look for a nice weapon with equilavent stats.

and I prefer a great looking weapon with +28 hp and 9/10 to a perfect 10/10 +30 hp collector's.

I completely agree. I rarely ever look at someone else's weapon and I don't really care what mine looks like as long as it has the stats I want.

A bit of both tbh. Maybe stats first tho, because no matter how good it looks, if it doesn't have the stats I won't use it.

My necro, for example, uses a collectors staff. Whereas my warrior just got through factions and obtained an exaulted aegis to replace her current shield (a weaponsmiths bronze shield with exactly the same stats).

My main character (ranger) uses a mixture of both, a collectors 15^50 shortbow, Elswyths Recurve, and a zodiac longbow (even tho i'm using it based primarily on looks it is 15 all -5en and has it's uses).

I would rather have a perfect stats collectors than an average unique.

well obviously, stats always comes first because you would benefit more from having a perfect item more than the coolest looking one in the game but 1% off of perfect or something. that said, i didnt know that items and armors had different skins until about a month ago. i have never noticed a landscape or seen what an attack with a certain weapon looks like and my graphics are set to the lowest resolution. it really doesnt matter. however, if you have the money, there is nothing better to do with it, so there is nothing bad about going for the best looking items, as long as you are able to retain the stats that you desire. if you can get the best looking items with perfect stats, more power to you, but if you are bidding on a +29 health always -5 received damage (19%) zodiac shield for hundreds of platinum in the high end forum, i think its time for an intervention.

My monk uses wands/foci from collectors - they have the stats that I want and I don't really care for the looks of those.

I will buy the best looking stuff for my warrior though since I have nothing else to spend my money on.

It's the chicken or the egg.

Are you accumulating wealth to acquire the pretty skinned items?

Or are you taking the wealth you accumulated by playing and enjoying the game (rather than grinding) and getting a little reward for your efforts?

Too many people do the former.

Only when it's in my characters hands do I notice what it looks like. Do I care what it looks like? I guess it depends on whether it's themed to look like what my character is wearing...

If I'm wearing Kurzick armor, then an Amber weapon looks better... do I care about stats over looks? Yup... Do I buy weapons from others for stats or looks? Nope. I never buy from other players, never have. I don't support inflated prices for drops. If I can get a collector item for 5k and some materials and within a day or so, find and mod it with just drops for a max cost of 6k (materials/kits) then paying 100k for an item someone got lucky finding... nah. Not worth it.

Do I sell the drops I find? Not often. I can't be bothered standing in town saying "WTS". Too boring so the merchants get lots of really good gold drops from me.

Most of the people who buy the high-end good looking stuff buy it so they can look good when you're looking at them in observer mode.

What would you prefer looking at:
A warrior in glads and a gladius attempting to poke people? Or a warrior in full fow with a fellblade or a gothic axe charging at the enemy like a warlord?

They do it so you have more fun while watching tv =P

Personally, I guess that I am vain, because I like the look of a weapon as well as the stats. I will farm for the perfect looking weapon and if it has perfect stats then so much the better, but if not I will use substandard until I find the perfect one.

It's only worth having cool stuff if it's perfect. Of course, different people take perfect to mean different things, for example req 13 15^50 Weapons aren't considered perfect for some stupid unknown reason, and people refuse to take Staves to which they don't meet the requirement, either. Why? I don't know. It's not really like you're going to be wanding much.

Its about the Stats to me.. I have a Collectors Long Sword with a Barbed and Fortitude Mod added. Its just hard getting perfect mods, but close to perfect is fine with me.

I do have a few nice greens 2 Axes and Victos Blade.. Have to spoil myself on occasion.

I usually start everything with a collector item and upgrade to more desirable skins later on.

I keep the collector stuff and give them to guildmates/newbs when they are replaced.

I dont care too much about skins, most of my characters are casters so its all about stats, id much rather have an ugly FFS on my monk than a +5energy vanity sword as i care more about performance.
I think the only skin id prefer over the collectors one is the platinum staff.

When i make a warrior i'd like to get some unique skins rather than the basic war axe or green items, as all of the warrior greens are sub-standard and you can pick up a high req 15^50 and zealous/defensive mods fairly cheaply.

/agree. These staves are great for a quick Healing Seed or Heal Party. Brohn's Staff is nonsense... so are his one-handed pieces of junk.

Blue weapons function just as well as golds and greens, infact getting a gold staff that has the same stats it's collector mirror is extremely rare. How many people have you seen with a gold 20/20 staff of the same attribute that doesn't clash with the req. attribute? I am a blue user and I continue to be one even with new characters. The only green I have is K's Refuge and I keep it becuase I found it on my first queen farm and I didn't have the money to build the collector's equivolant at the time. (which would have costed about 60k)

I must say something about greens before Factions though. In some cases, it was actually cheaper to buy a green than to build it's mirror using a collector's weapon as a base (monks really got the shaft though, there were maybe 2 green staves worth using)

Upgrade componants are also getting cheaper, which I for one am happy about.

As for buying golds/greens for the skin; whatever floats your boat mate. I spend my money on pretty things too, but my expenses are set for the most part. And besides the green lovers have been making me rich for a while now (do you think anyone would buy Shiro's blades if they were blue and a different name?)

Gold weapons are prestigious and unique. Collector and green weapons open up perfect stats to everybody who either can't afford good gold weapons or don't want to spend the time farming for them.

Personally, I'm content with my mix of green/collector/weaponsmith weapons, offhands, and shields. Not all of the greens have useful mods (i.e. Villnar's Claw has energy +3 while hexed...useless) but if you mix and match you can come up with some interesting combinations and double-up on some mods (Brohn's Holy Rod + 20/20 healing ankh = 40% skill recharge on Healing Prayers.)

Dude. If people make the cash, they can spend it how they want. Who cares if they grind all the time to make the cash, its how they want to play. Others could care less and thats just dandy too! However, to those who took a discriminating stance on things like "I dont pug with people who have rare skins, cause my collectors has better stats!" BS, all around. If they had the cash to GET that ubar expensive rare skin to begin with, then chances are they had plenty more to customize it to perfection.

My personal stance is a balance. I only have PvE characters, so when i want to PvP with them, they usually have collector items for any build needed. At the same time i have many rare skin items and sometimes they fit the role of the build i use in PvP. And since i never go for rare skin items purely for the looks, i always make sure i am purchasing good base stats.

All in all, the rare skins i buy are for me. I like the look, and i would like to have that look and i have the cash for it, so why not? I truthfully dont care if others dont notice, cause i like how it looks =D. It was well put, concerning personal preference::

I agree, I've never gottena weapon (or fancy armor, for that matter) to impress anyone else, I got it because I want to like the way my character looks. It's the character I'm going to be seeing the most out of any other, so I'd rather they look cool.

That said, I don't spend ridiculous amounts just for vanity-skin weapons. More likely, I'll wait for drops or buy something reasonably priced.

The only green weapon I am uber gah gah over is my Drago's Flatbow... You couldn't make me sell that thing for any amount of money. I love the way it dwarfs me and can shoot from UW to hit Ascalon.
When I wanted a good staff for my MM, I went and got the collectors 20/20 outside (Elona I think o_O) and put a +5energy mod and either an armor or a 30hp mod on it. Basically its the same as the green drop but a LOT cheaper.

I wanted an IDS but I never got one... and I have a Bulwark but unlike most I waited first for the price to drop and then I spammed a WTB for 80k when they were still selling for 100k+ - A guy messaged me and said 85k and I said... Hmm.. I guess. Made a nice deal, and had I been smart I would have resold but I never knew what new updates would change and I didn't want to chance supply and demand.

I would love to have a Yakslapper, just cause I think that is the best name ever for a weapon

Yeah I am weird hehe
