I use 70% collector stuff, mostly offhands. However some green and/or gold items have nice bonus combinations. you can't craft an item like rago flame wand or brohns holy rod. which do have their place in the right build.
Do they make a difference by themselves....not really.
do they make a difference in combination with certain items..... yes.
does this over power someone or something. No. the added effect is minimal and balances out. possible burnout/recharge times actually leaving you spent for a few seconds while the enemy continues to work.
most of the gold/green item market is for 1 of 2 things. either looks for the more skilled players or for someone rushing into the game fresh from ebay.
Yes the pricing for alot of items is rediculious and greed makes then as such.
I see no reason in the price gouging other then lazyness and greed because a 55 monk or solo tank is at its cheapest to make now and if you cant make 50k/day warrior or 100k+/day solo monk farming then IMHO you dont deserve to run the character. earning gold is not difficult.
Anet did increase the drops and rate of those drops so I comment them there.< CLAP >
people buy the rare skin armour/weapons because they want it. however most don't earn it.
why does my monk have 2 set of fissure armour? BECAUSE HE EARNED IT!!!!!

Make the collectors skins nice ... NOT HOT w/ some glowing lights but something decent so that when you use a collectos item and some newbies (to the game) ask what weapon you are using you can tell them it's a collectors item not some 100k glold.
but art is subjective anyways... Not a fan of that collectors Crimson Carapace Shield but hay i use it -)
sorry just getting tired of people in Drokanr/Factions towns slamming "WTB low Req 8 or 9 gold Sword/Axe Max damage Cheap PM me" Cheap w/ max dmg... ya.. dude whatever FTW -)

I'm a blend of the 2, but collector's looks fine if you ask me.

Some aren't upgraded, and as such I don't use them near as much. However, things like the negative energy set always warrant a place despite the lack of mods. I'm still trying to find perfect alternatives to those that aren't maxed, as well as a 30/+10 Gold Shield due to the imbalance between Gold ones and Green/Collector ones.
My inventory can quite easily be summed up by;
"Hi, I play GvG in a competitive atmosphere."

You have more weapons than Hitman!

and to think that those are just the extra items/armor for your ele alone yeah my monk, ranger, and war are very similar. any truly competitive gvg / pvp players will have whatever he needs for any given time and situation

It really is all about the stats for me. But there are some VERY nice skins out there.

I craft unless I have money to blow. The only thing you are really going to spend money on in GW is either armor or weapons.

I use my collectors 20/20 healing prayers staff on monk and I <3 it.
Parson Brown
I use collector's weapons unless I find better.
For example, the 10/10 water staff I found last night beats a 20/20 collectors because I never play straight water magic. I use Kehpket's Refuge because it is exactly what I would build myself if I could build anything.
With greens and golds I won't use, If they are too good to merch, I usually put them up on an auction site (here or rpgtraders). If they don't sell, I usually post a "WTS" at a very low price so that I can sell in a few minutes. I like opening chests, and if you don't sell the golds for something beyond the price of the keys, you really end up losing a lot of money in the process (chest contents never merch for more than the price of the key).
I do notice what other players are wielding, but I don't usually give it much thought.

I think that there is a clear divide between the caster and non caster professions.
I’ve been a monk for 8 months and have had the choice of carrying a bland broom handle around or, if I’m really lucky, a bland broom handle with a 40W light bulb stick on the end.
Warriors and Rangers however have had a wide choice and some impressive looking skins, and here I can understand the desire to obtain these items.
My new Cantha character is a Ranger and I admit I got caught up in the desirable skin thing for the first time. Now have 4 very nice perfect stat bows and not much gold left
Now bringing a new Cantha monk through and have had to go back to carrying a broom handle around again

I notice. And I do care. I'd much rather have someone using a vampiric crafter sword of fortitude than a 13-19 dmg purple crystalline sword. The stats are all that really matter. Settling for somthing that's less than perfect because it has a cool skin is stupid IMO.
Although, if it's perfect and has a nice skin, I'm all for that.

In response to the title:
No. I don't often notice what other people are using. And frankly, I don't really care. It's up to them what they like to use.
But in my opinion, special item skins that are worth more aren't really for other people to notice. They're for you, the person who actually plays with them. If you go out of your way to get FoW armor and Crystalline Swords, Zodiac Items, and anything else with perfect stats and whatnot, it shouldn't be to impress others. It should be for you because you like how they look.
So yes, I buy rare skins. But I buy them for me. They're a reward for playing the game diligently. Everytime I log on I say to myself, "God, my character looks badass." and that's all that really matters. I couldn't really care less if another player notices or not.

Well seeing as how we are talking about pve, refering to the OP's question, I'm neither. I'd buy that 2 damage off from max req 11 chaos axe with no mods and use it. I wouldn't buy a perfect gold one, nor would i spend my time to go craft the collector stats I want.
-Loki-
Damn you and your HoD axe vanq.

I actually notice the weapons my co-players are using. And I do both, go for collectors and buy off players.
I agree, stats are more important than looks.. so my assassin is walking around with crafted daggers rather than the set I want... It's going to be a while before I can justify buying him that set.

I use crafter weapons for most characters but my warrior is my trophy character and I spare no expense on it.
mrcake
I tend to have both as with collectors or crafter weapons i can customize them for the 20% damage and not care because i can never sell them on and its good to have the +20 when solo farming.
I cant think of a valid reason to have 100k + ecto value weapons apart from the fact if i have a lot of gold what else can i spend it on after armour?but it has never stopped me.

Only recently I noticed people drooling over skins. I'm always wary of that FDS-wielding wammo (prolly not max dmg as well).
Ardrid
I'd probably say I'm aware of what others are using if the skin is enough to get my attention. In the grand scheme of things though, I really don't care as long as they get the job done and can help out the team. As far as myself, I've never bought a weapon and have stuck to collector's items, greens, or the occasional sweet drop that I've obtained myself.
Right now I'm using Sskai's, Rago's, Kephket's, and Wenslauss' (don't really use it, just have it for posterity's sake). My current goal is to get Ssyn's Staff (the ONLY green Channeling staff, though I may just get the crafter's staff and throw a perfect Insightful/Fortitude on it) and Jayne's Staff (same stats as Kephket's but a very unique look). I previously had an IDS for my tank (which I busted my ass to get in that damn cave), and a Fellblade before that.
My casters are pretty much exactly where I want them. For my tank, ideally, I'd probably want a perfect Zod Shield (or the Exalted Aegis, whichever comes first ) and a Shadow, Platinum, or Zod Sword with a perfect Furious or Sundering (debating over which is better; thought about Vamps but I've never been really fond of them.) and Fortitude because, as nice as Sskai's is, the skin leaves a bit to be desired. The hardest part of course is getting these myself because I refuse to pay for them, despite the fact that I have enough money.

I am normally crafter...but greens are good too. I currently have 2 greens and 2 crafter weapons on my bar. (Actually I have a gold one in my inventory...because it came with armor +10...which is good for some places)

Stats are what matter most, but I definitely notice exceptional vs. mundane skins. If I'm forming a party, I'm more likely to select the player in 15k armor vs. one with common graphics armor since 1) I know it will have max armor levels 2) the 15k player is more likely to be better equipped given the display of deeper pockets. This assumes no prior knowlege of either player being selected.
Side note: So long as GW.exe only displays your toon's personal damage/life-gain/energy numbers while hiding everyone else's, there's no way to even "guess" at each party member's true productivity. Coming from other MMO/CPORPG style games, I find the lack of visual damage output from other party members VERY annoying.

stats are the most important....look is secondary, cost---for the greens I wont spend more than 1plat (maybe 2 if its what I really want).....but who cares what weapon you use as long as you get the job done (I have been know to use screwdrivers as hammers so I am not above using what is at hand).
That being said, I believe most of my characters have at least one green item (usually given to me or bought for above mentioned price), however; I am just as inclined to use whatever gives me the desired effect rather than a specific skin. (my ranger has been using a long bow from a collector waaaay back---not max but the mods are better than any I have picked up since).
so to answer the question....no I dont care at all.

Im a crafter. With the exeption of getting a IDS for conjure frost ettin farming. Other than that i can care less what my weapons look like as long as there awsome. I was looking for mesmer offhands and wands on auctions for fun and i found that things i could buy for 20k on auctions are worse than things i can trade and only cause 1k tops...
Also the crimson carpace sheild with 45+ health and -2 in stance...lets discuss this. People are paying 200k+ for sheilds half this good just because they look slightly better. I think the skull looks cool already + you can dye the whole thing 1 color...only adds effect. I think its just stupid that people buy these rediculous things unless they ebay or bot. I dont do either so i stick with crafting and zoom out all the way. That way i dont see what it looks like, all i see is the yellow # that shows my dmg and the purple healthbar that shows my hexes.

The player's character is their GW-avatar. It doesn't take much to obtain optimum stat gear, but it takes a lot more time and effort to get high stat gear with corresponding eye candy. Since most serious players will span several thousand hours of GW game time, they will probably find plenty of high-demand items to sell for huge platinum totals. Just sitting on this platinum makes no sense... it won't accumulate interest or dividends sitting in the stash, so why not get better looking gear with good stats? There is a reason why many players take time and the trouble to obtain FoW armor despite the steep costs, and it doesn't involve e-bay.
Travlin
I agree. Crafter/collecter wepons can be just as good or even better than golds and greens. I recently found a collecter http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Leijo who gives a wooden buckler which is the same as the famed Malinon's Shield with the only difference being that for the collecter shield u need 9 strength instead of the 9 tactics for Malinon's. This shield requires 5 Ancient Kappa Shells which i got from another player for only 2.5k. This, compared to Malinon's which i have seen go for between 25 & 45k is a savings of up to 42.5k.

Firstly, all my character get all collector items needed for their job such as 15>50 cleaver, katana, 20/20 fast cast, recharge staff, etc.. But when I have some gold to save, of course I will spend it on some gold or green items with skins I like, even for my taste only, don't care other like it or not.
soySauceNR1ce
same here don't really care about the looks much unless it sumthing like dragos bow that makes it look 2x bigger than your char lol but other than that is collecters items
