I remember not to far back, I was trying to get into a group for the UW. I found one that required TS, no big deal, I log in to TS with them, they begin going through the plan. I was to be one of the tanks, so I was being "tutored" in how to hold the aggro... I had my FoW set on(geuss they didnt notice) and they felt the need to explain anyway. When they were done explaining, I said np I've been here many times I know the drill.
Saying "I know the drill" made the leader of the group call me some nasty names then kick me from both TS and the group.
On the other hand though, I've been with groups that would do anything to help, so I geuss the issue evens itself out.

I haven't really noticed, other than some 'tarded smacktalkers in Aspenwood (and those horrible horrible AFKers), fun thing is that talking back 'normally' to the smacktalkers usually uncovers a totally different person from the 'lol owned u noob'-generalized PvP asshat, more to a normal human being.
And I've completed the game (Prophecies ~8 times, Factions 2 times (and 4 times up to the places where to get 15k Luxon/Kurzick armor) with PUGs and I haven't had that much negative experiences by doing those. Most of the time they kill stuff faster than me and my henchies, often there's few chatty people, and there's the occasional 'Look at me frrrreeenzzzyyyy'-tanks and other horrible horrible builds, but.. I've managed, and they've been fun almost all the times.
I had fun at Cavalon yesterday as well, a person was spamming 'WTS pm offer' over and over again in trade channel, me and some other peep wrote on trade as well, that what he was selling. But no reply.
I then finally PM'd the guy with '1 gold!', only to get a reply in French. After a while, I was asked if I spoke it. I said no, and tried saying that what he was spamming on trade made no sense. He didn't understand. Sooo, I whip up Babelfish, translate 'What are you selling?' to French, paste it. Another reply in French, and babelfish couldn't crack it either. After some 5 minutes, I had solved the mystery (I gave up, walked to the guy, and told him to show me the item), after which I PM'd him ''WTS Shiro's Sword, pm''. He actually suggested ''WTS babelfish, pm'' after I mentioned that I was using babelfish to translate my stuff to French. Dunno if it's that much on topic tho Atleast I helped someone XD

There are 8 year olds who act mature and there are plenty of adults who act incredibly immature, judging someone by their age is a stereotype, and one that is usually wrong.

I have a few high lvl chars and do UW a bit. When I get any drops I dont need I usually take them to Ascalon after and give them away to people for free. Its not like I need more cash and I have all the weapons I am going to use. You usually see 2 kinds of people when you do this.
1. This person thinks there is a catch or you are lying. This person cant believe that you would want to give something away for nothing, so they dont bother inquiring.
or
2. This person wants all the free weapons you have, or at least multiples, and this person may or may not also try asking you for money as well.
Why cant people just be happy with 1 free weapon

I dont think there is a decline, and you cant really conclude this based on a few recent bad experiences the Guildwars community is so massive you could never comprehend this kind of statistic.
I would note though that there seems to be less people helping noobs and being rude to them when they do nooby things.. I think this results in those noobs growing up to act in the same way!
My guild is full of pretty experienced a nice people.. sometimes I recruit daisy fresh 'just bought the game' noobs... and they moan and groan about him and never help out!
But I like to help them, true you have to be patient! but they will forever appreciate it! then one day that person will help someone else..

I used to do that too Ariana, but one too many times I saw people I'd just given XYZ to run off yelling "WTS XYZ!".
The other type of people who annoy me are idiots who demand to see that gold drop that you just picked up. I transfer all unidentified golds to one character for identification to help with titles, yet when I try to explain this to the idiot who says "Show me that drop" (notice no use of "Please"), I seem to incur their wrath.
One even threatened to report me because I didn't show him an item.
I know that a party kick option would be open to abuse, but SOMETHING needs to be done about the idiot quotient.

See I could care less if they turn around and sell it, if they need cash and that will help them I am all for it. I just think it is rude to be overly greedy to someone who is trying to help you.

I like to consider myself a nice person..Although i'm probably a complete prick in PvP (I get too competitive). Whenever I find anything I don't plan on using, I give them away to either guild members, or to new people in guild wars. About 95% of the time i get a ty, so the community isn't that bad. I have however not had many jerk encounters and when i have, surprisingly, reasoning works on them .
As a side note, I am a teenager.

Don't think the % of rude people has changed much since the beginning. I see less newbies but there's the same amount of poor mannered players. Not too many luckily, but I mostly party with guildies so I really can't say much. Didn't meet many unrespectful players in GvG either (lots on RA, HA and TA though).

I don't care, you don't care, Anet doesn't care and most certainly everyone posting here doesn't care. Your thread isn't going to do squat to improve the GW community because nobody gives a damn. How I solved the problem is that I gave up on the GW community. That's right, I gave up on the humanity of the game. I stopped caring and I pretty do anything, anywhere to whoever I want in the game. How did I do it? Well of course, I know that 99% of the people there are asshats. So I don't feel bad if I scam/ragequit/scold/insult some unfortunate n00b. Chances are, he's already a jerk or he's going to turn into a jerk anyway with or without my abuse. So why bother? Why waste your time trying to reason/be nice with someone over the internet who probably doesn't even have the mental capacity to open a banana? Jeez, you guys aern't superheroes, you aern't going to save anyone from anything, especially from the GW community. You either deal with it like I did, or you should go off and play Oblivion, where the NPC's somehow have parents who are able to teach them politeness and manners. |

A year ago things were different in GW. Everyone was running around pre-searing enjoying emotes and pets and killing the big bad charr. Now-a-days, people appear generally less tolerant and less forgiving. I try to be helpful and respectful, answering questions in town and giving people the benefit of the doubt and what not, but I suppose I too fall prey to it from time to time.
I come from the flight sim community, and there is definitely a different mentality there than in FPS's. I have seen the occassional kids whining about this and that, but in the end, most people there had a general level of respect -- gg or gj was almost always said when someone had gotten the better of someone else. Of course, there is a big difference -- in a flight sim you all have the same basic equipment... it all works and looks basically the same (asside from custom paint jobs). There is no money, wealth, vanity items, or economy for that matter -- which I guess goes a long way to stopping greed.
I've also played FPS's, and in those it's almost always "I pzwned u! I teh uber leet kilzer"... similar comentary to what I sometimes see in GW PvP (or places like the Grotto). If you mix that mentality with vanity items and an economy, I guess you get what we see (far too much of, imho) today in GW. -_-
Best bet is probably to find a guild (if you're lucky enough to do so) that suites your playing style.

i brush most of the rudeness off except for people who bash honest questions, nothing grates my nerves faster than someone who gets slammed for asking questions, how else do people learn?
as far as good role models, isnt that the parents job? dont blame sports, etc etc for jerks, its 99% the parents fault for kids being rude.

Most of the PvE players I meet are friendly, but it's usually an occasional PvP player that pisses me off to no end.
I took the time to groom my PvE ranger to do Alliance Battles, got nice 15k Canthan Armor w/sup vigor and the other runes I needed for my build. Also bought a Storm Bow with perfect stats and mods. This is equal to any PvP character that I could roll, it just looks nicer! The first thing that happened last night when I got a group for Alliance Battles, the monk in the group said "Storm bows sucks, Storm bows are for PvE noobs!". Then he went on to critique my build and and tell me what I should have brought!
Well, I didn't die, and we won the Alliance battle 500 - 125. After the match I just said that "This PvE noob needs to take his storm bow and find a friendly group to play with". I guess that some people just don't understand that "Alliance Battles" are a form of PvP for the PvE'rs. If you really want organized PvP, then take your uber leetness to GvG or HoH.

When the game was new no one knew what to do or expect. We would work together to figure it out. There wasn't someone we could ask for all of the answers. We didn't know what was the highest armor level and what town we could get it in. We didn't know how big the world of Tyiria was so we explored the whole thing because we were having fun and wanted to find new stuff. Now people explore just to get a title because they already know what is out there by looking at a map online.
Now people are on their 4th+ character and are tired of the steps required to get them to full strength so now have very little patience for the new people who have not learned everything yet. They forget that these people they are so pissed off at for doing stupid stuff was them a couple of months ago.
The next group is the person who goes to websites like Guru and reads through all of the forums and learns everything there is about the game before they even buy it. All they want to do is have all of the Uber stuff they read about online. They want to be that 55 monk without learning the way a monk even works by going through the whole game and learning from doing stupid things. They will show up and ask for runners to whatever town even if they dont know where it is. They want that one specific weapon they read about or the skills for that kick ass new build that someone just posted yesterday.
Sometimes people forget why they started to play the game in the first place. Think back to when you first played the game. How many stupid things did you do and laugh about.

Thats true, right now, all the people that can explode on you are probably getting tired of doing the campaign with their 5th character, and seeing people mess up with their 1st character, can set them off, or anything that aggrivates them in the least, like them not getting what they want, or getting an item and the price they want to pay.
Good thing I'm going to quit GW as soon as I get an Xbox 360, sell all my non monk items, and keep my monk guy until there comes an expansion i want (and nightfall doesn't look that good)
The truth is, people just seem to get more impatient, every day, and that can mean alot of jerks.

There seems to be a lot less patience now, especially in Factions....
I was with a PUG trying to do the elite mission at Urgoz; the first time, we got through the first group that spawned. At the 2nd group, we died. Rather than trying again as a group, there seemed to be some secret vote, and someone made the decision to boot anyone that didn't have TS/Vent (I was one of those booted). It's hard enough trying to get a PUG of 12 for that mission, but when you've stood around for 20-30 minutes in a PUG and get booted like that spawns some hard feelings that will carry over for a while.
I was pissed off enough to ask WTF, and got a weak answer like, "sorry, we had a vote and booted you".
I got another PUG together (WITHOUT TS/Vent), and we beat it. Still mad, though; and when we completed it, and went back to Urgoz, I saw the same group still there. I whispered one guy, "What happened?" He tells me they died. I had to whisper to the team leader, "Just did it without TS....hope you're here all night."
What get's me upset, after thinking about it; I never would have done something like that a few months ago.....

I think it is because of the word "noob". Too many people don't want to be called it, yet use it themselves.
Supposedly buying FoW armor with Ebayed money (or so goes the stereotypes), makes you "mad leet".
Back on topic.
My conjecture is that many people who have heard about the game have friends that are in higher level areas or missions. They cannot possibly catch up instantaneously. The result is they end up being run.
Being run without playing through with at least one character leads to faster boredom with the game, lack of knowledge of skills/mechanics/tactics, and general looking down upon newer players. So there is Class A of jerks: people that get run and do not know what they are doing, looking down on players who seemingly have lower status because they are not up to the same point.
Now on to Class B of jerks. There is the group of players who has been playing longer than the newer players. Instead of helping them get ahead, this class of "jerk" tells them wrong information, on purpose. Example: where to cap _____ and someone tells the newer player to go to a place that is the opposite end of the map.

I've found that being a cynic in real life helps greatly. Granted, it makes me more prone to viewing a few select people as my intellectual inferiors, but I'll still be helpful in-game as long as you don't prove yourself an idiot or a jerk.

Probably one of the biggest things that people will trash you for is playing IWAY. The problem is that if you're not ranked at HA you don't get into many groups, whereas IWAY even the unranked players can easily slip into it

My thoughts are that if the person does not have the moral fortitude to do the right thing to other people in a game setting with few consequences, most likely they will act the same / consider acting the same in real life. Jerks are jerks period. Scammers are scammers period.
Nothing makes me crazier than scammers / people knowingly taking advantage of other players.
There are real people piloting those little toons all over GW's fictional world. And yes, many of them need a good therapist or a good paddle across their backside.

I can't help but disagree. Ive been playing for about 5 days, and my first impresion is everyone ive met is polite and helpful. People ran me to places for free, gave me junk form their bank that turned out to be extremely valuable, people gave me advice on quests, offered to help me through missions. And not once, not once have I heard the word "noob". Im not kidding, ive not once!
There are people who kick me from farming partys, but they explain to me im not able to survive long enough and tell me their sorry.
This is without a doubt, the most friendl RPG ive played so far... So far..

i have two characters on the go my elemental/necromancer is in the barren (post searing is it) area and my other a mesmer/ranger is still in the first area you join the game in, although my char is now level 9 i am happy to keep her in this area to help out those who have either just joined or are trying to level up, i have on several occassions dropped items that they need that i no longer require so they can complete a quest or get their next level of clothing, to me that is just being a courteous gamer.
so if anyone has a character in the first area and needs help look out for AZURA DRAGONSOUL i will be happy to oblige

One of my main gripes is people trying to make money. now dont get me wrong, I have no issue with people having rich characters and have more spare cash knocking around than i know what to do with. I'm a straight pve player and will quite often sell items well below their baseline price in an attempt to either shift quickly or to do people a cheap deal. Bugs the hell out of me when someone takes you up on the offer and then calls you the biigest noob ever as their about to go off and sell the same thing for X amount.
Fair play to em is what i say, but it annoys me that they asume what sort of player you are.

I will say I can't stand scammers, either. I haven't been scammed, but not for lack of others trying. I read up on the latest scams, and when I trade, I pay attention to everything. I've even been known to help people who have been scammed. I got a droks run once, and one of the guys being run skipped the bill, so I gave the runner my amount plus the scammer's out of good faith. Some people have no problem with being complete asses for a couple of thousand gold.
Silent Kitty
I have a problem with players who stand in town for hours begging for 50G so they can open an storage account. What kind of gaming strategy is that? Are they scammers who think they can get rich that way? Are they lazy and hope they never have to leave town to kill something? Or are they stupid and don't know that there is much more to the game than the Shing Jea Monastery?
Than you have the people who try to buy credits for 50G, knowing very well that they can easily be sold for twice that much.
As long as noob number one meets scammer number two, there will always jerks and losers in this game. It is just like real life. As long as there is an overly active innocent, there will always be people who try to scam him/her out of the last gold piece. Scammers don't care how much they steal people. They have made someone feel inadequate, and that is what they thrive on. Like "Wow, I have scammed someone out of 50 gold! I must be the best gamer in the world!" From than on, that player's behaviour will go on a downward spiral.

I've noticed increased activity when it comes to scamming. And people telling me my items I am selling are useless. "its only worth 5k jerk!" 15 mins later I sell it for 80k....durrrr.
I find in the more competitive areas you get jerks, HoH, TA, RA, 12 v 12. Its like competing and beating someoen a game is as good to them as a real life achievement.
I would venture a guess, the bad behavior is due to holiday time and alot of new blood wandering into GW and GW:F
However for every 10 retards I meet, I meet one really cool and very friendly player :-) So its not all bad.

However, the biggest change since release has been the shift of player focus from gaming to farming. I often wonder if *anyone* plays for fun any more, or if everyone is solely running to farm the latest greatest green. A lot of players seem to be playing exclusively to farm.
Another new thing is the constant "i suk u" dry-humping simulated sex. I hardly saw any of that before the PvP weekend/when europe started getting favor regularly, after that it just exploded. Personally I think it's not because of age or because they're new players, but because that was when the leet-brigade returned to EU from the US.
It's particularly depressing in Lions Arch and the Random Arena - pretty much all the messages in the ALL channel is either trade spam or "i suk u". No wonder people turn off all chat.
What one could do about it?
Well, possibly an auction house would help somewhat against the trade spam, but I suspect people would just put items up for auction AND spam chat. As for other behavior... well, I try to lead by example. Don't know what else one can do.

I don't know if the level of jerkiness has increased, but I know I have totally lost patience with jerks. I used to just put up with them, put them on ignore until the end of a mission or turn off team chat, or whatnot. These days, I can't stand to be in a home district for more than five seconds before I feel filthy. Thank God for International Districts, where it's generally quieter, friendly, and overall saner. The only time I surface from International is when I absolutely have to PUG.
There are exceptions of course, such as Kaineng or Lion's Arch International whenever Gaile visits. And sometimes, LA International is just a cesspool of spam and griefing, from idiots who think it's cool to do so. Yet, International remains the best escape hatch.

I think most of the people I met when I was a "Noob" were nice to me too. But I recently re-invented a char and found not as many people willing to help as last summer.

they were always there, now though, they know alot more ways to be jerks in GW, so they stand out more.
plus, the first time you played through, there was the whole WOW (NOT World of Warcraft) factor to the game, but now, if you've played it already, thats gone, so you look at other things, the only other thing to look at is the players.
also, after beating the game, you generally spend alot more time selling and trading, and thats when you really notice the jerks

lol funny how that happened to me 3 times (lol yes 3 times) at hell's precipice... i was after the mission, first group capped skill and left, 2nd group, 2 mo (me being one) , first left after cappin a necro skill, a warr soon left after that and i quitted too (knowing hell's a long and tedious fight), 3rd group are full of map explorers would enjoy a little bit of aggro'ing and makes monks run all over the map jsut to heal them... i ended up finishing the mission with a bunch of french group who were wondering in english district...
hench ftw...

My 7 year old son plays on our account. I watch him while he plays. People have been nothing but nice to him. A lot of level 20s have gone out with him and helped him complete quests. Many have given him good weapons. The worst he's run in to is being asked if he speaks english because of his spelling. I've also seen him give away some pretty good stuff. So, he's learning from the example of the nice players.
