You could add some lighting effects to that sword... to make it more natural. You would expect it to glow, now its put away in darkness.

I made this one the same way as the tutorial BUT instead i used motion blur instead of gaussian and i added some words. btw rangers= party people.

I made some avatars as well, but I used some kind of diffuse effect instead of blur, and only erased smaller areas like faces:

I want to re-do all my avatars now! haha I took them all against the bright white snow outside the troll cave in talus chute, and yes I did dodge and burn them and used filter > stylize > diffuse > anistropic on the second duplicated layer. Then slowly erased any areas that looked too blurred (usually eyes/face). It's really quick to do.
