Commercials on Guild Wars?
Deadlyjunk
Hello people.
While reading an article on gaming in a local magazine (comparable to say... Time Magazine) I came across a paragraph which essentially contained the following:
Seeing as people are watching less television (according to an American study: down by 12% over the last year) and playing more games, companies are losing their TV advertisement base. This is furthered by digital television which allows users to skip commercials altogether. Therefore certain companies are becoming more and more interested in placing ads for their products in video games. In Belgium, a advertising bureau has even devoted itself entirely to this new industry.
Further, according to the article "gamers don't mind ads in their games". I don't, but of course I'm not the entire gaming community.
Already the Korean servers have met a company other that ANet doing promotions on GW (the unique "Coca Cola" items)
Do we want other companies in our game? Advertisements all over the place? Billboards in Lion's Arch showing a team in HoH and a can of Coke saying: "Real champions drink Coca Cola" or some such platitude?

Companies already do ads in games and POSTING THE SAME THREAD THREE TIMES WON'T MAKE IT ANY MORE IMPORTANT.

Deadlyjunk - remove your finger from the damn mouse and stop posting this OVER and OVER. Give it a few minutes.

Once we see it in a few mmo i think it'll spread. I'm pretty sure WoW was advertising Pizza Hut or something at some point lol.
Maybe we'll see an ingame "KFC" someday. And play mini-games where we collect buckets of chicken for Colonel Sanders to gain titles like "Greedy Bastard". Ya never know.

Ok, I'm very sorry about the triple or quadruple posting but my guru is taking like... forever to load. And I had a few couldn't complete operations messages, so never knew if it was getting through. My apologies to the mods...

LOL I know, while you have been having trouble seeing if you posted, I've been having trouble deleting your multiples.. sorry for the snappiness, but after 7 (seven!!) threads, and also getting errors, I'm a bit testy.

Hopefully it won't be like NFS:U2, because there's best buy and other stores all over the streets... and there not exactly discrete,

this was posted about ~8 months ago, gaile said there wouldn't ever be any sort of billboard like ads in gw, mainly 'cause.. some joke about ascalon and an ad for some electronic device and how it's all old land walk around with yaks pulling carts and yurrrr.. not gunna happen in gw, and no I don't want it to happen.

That is because TV has been going down the hill over the last 2 years. There is no Variety on sequels.
lilnate22
i actualy think its a great idea.... u can have ads come up on the load screen and have bilboards an such...
y? then ANET would get money and could finally aford beter servers that would eliminate err7s cmon anet is givin us a game for free (minus 50$$) unlike other mmos that charge gw is free so y cant anet make sum $ w/ ads?
psh as long as it doesnt pop up while im in a battle i can care less if i c a billboard w/ warmachine holding up coke

Comercials in games, simply dumb. If a product is good and I have need for it, i will seek it out. Similar to those fools that insist on selling in All Chat. If we need something, we will seek it out. No need for Spam or comercials. hehe
@ Yanman.be (I gotta tease) - were you on bean cake when you snapped that avatar pic? - jk

They should totally put a McDonalds in Ascalon, Temple of the Ages, Droks and Kaineng. It would be fun, a gold-sink and promote McDonalds. Kaineng would look cool with the big advertising screens like Times Square and Hong Kong. Wouldn't bother me one bit if it would maintain the good service ArenaNet provides.
Helll is for Heroes
woah, there are Coca-Cola GW items? o.O
i never knew this.

Checked their site, http://www.redandivory.be/site.html ....they just started...won't be a big company IMO.

I think this sort of strategy could easily backfire on the sponsor. A bunch of jerks running around with your collectible items greifing everyone in sight is not likely to help sales.
Rent
This already exists in Anarchy Online, and it's really annoying.
I certainly hope this never comes to be.

Advertising on the loading or menu screen wouldn't be too bad, but I wouldn't want any billboards or items to be used in this way.

this started i believe with GTA thats where you seen things like "ZAP" = GAP, etc... blablabla, they said "makes game look that more like real life" makes people wanna shop at gap =P
i dont mind a few billboards popping up ever so often since its nice to see it looking realistic, but if i see "War machine drink it and win, SO CAN U" well i would concider leaving GW, or PvP ONLY, so i didnt have to go into towns to see NPC selling cola which deletes the DP since its refreshing

No ads. No way. I get enough junk mail and email as it is. I don't want it in my only escape.
J snukka
pop-up ads are a no no. I dont mind if the advertising is done in the login screen or if they implement in the environment. If we have them in in-game billboards it might be interesting to even see lol. I look at billboards when im driving the highway, why not in-game when im in town lol.

Adware would be bad (where it downloads ads from the Internet). I wouldn't want that.
I wouldn't object to product placement if it fitted with the game. I doubt there would be any products that fit into GW. However, in an FPS set in the modern day, they could have cans of coke on a desk, a certain brand of computer shown etc, like they do in movies.

They were trying to integrate this into Auto Assault, all you really need for successful marketing is a brief flash of a namebrand product, nothing overly intrusive, or overtly. Though Auto Assault never took off for some odd reason, it was like Vigilante 8 online.

lol id liek to go to Lions Arch and see some to gonig around yelling "Pepsi!!" and advertisements, would be pretty cool to see them in game
Kook~NBK~
Imagine it!
Kingsford charcoal bags placed conveniently near Charr effigy fires! Big red K over the merchant's tent! Cinematics at the beginning of missions saying "This mission brought to you by our good friends at AT&T"
Please, never let this happen. If you've ever seen Species II, you'll remember how laughable the spaceship looked with all the ads plastered all over the outside of it!

im sure advertisments in-game won't be so out of place.

lol, I can See WM on the wheaties box right now.
Advertisements could be a good thing. Think about it...more advertisements means more $ which means more of those updates we all crave. As long as they don't go too over the top or upload DoubleCLick spyware to our computers, i'm all for it.

Do it like Nascar. Sponsored armor!
I'll be wearing my Scientology Helm (+20 armor vs Xenu), Viagra Cuirass (+10 vs piercing attacks), KFC "White Meat Thigh" leggings and Budweiser boots (prevents Dwarven Ale from ever getting you drunk).

You do not want advertisements in game. They lobby goverment officials to make law changes to benifit them and the tv companies are forced to follow (its their only source of income).
The same would happen here. Once companies put ads in ad companies can force changes. The game industry would make the changes so they keep that extra cash coming in.
This happened with channels from LA/NY. You used to be able to get channels from LA/NY by requesting them. A waiver would be sent to your local channels gaining permission to receive these channels. People loved these channels because they could watch their shows earlier or later depending on your time zone. Then the ad companies got legislation past to bar people from getting these channels if you have local channels available in your area. Their argument was that people were watching the LA/NY channels and not receiving ads from the their local area which they had paid the local channels for. The legislation past and no more LA/NY channels if you have local channels in your area.
Ad companies are also trying to get DVR and TiVo banned because you can fast forward through the comercials. Before when VCRs were made difficult to set to record (you think that was on accident?) they never had this problem. Then DVR came in and gave that ability at a push of 1 button. Now they have a problem with it since anyone can use it easily.
Its been coming for a long time and will generate extra revenue for the game industry so I dought it will be turned down. Hope they know what they are dealing with first. These companies have friends in very high places. It might mean more cash for Anet but it also means accepting outside influences that will change your game and not always for the benifit of the player.

No, no way!
There is no reason to add ads to this game.
Anyone who has played Planetside will know the horrors of when they added adverts to the game, in the form of screens all over the place.
Non-stop annoying spam!
In the end I had to setup my Firewall to block all these adverts, but at the end of the day they should have never been added in the first place.

Ingame advertising would be kinda challenging, given that the products that most ads try to sell are based on modern day, when the game itself is back in the ye olde days of sword and shield.
Seeing an 'Superduper MP3 player' advertise ment ingame would kinda break the immersion... :P
Anarchy Online has had the ads for some time already for the free accounts, I have them disabled on my paid one, but they weren't that bad in the end, the billboards weren't that intrusive there, and the ads didn't break immersion that much, as the whole game is placed in future.
But GW doesn't really need those, it should be doing okay without the extra advert money.

um.... guess that means your a fr00bie... or what ever the people in AO call the non paying people.. the people that pay are free from the adds.. AN better not copy off of that.....
if AN was going to put adds ingame.. I would hope they would keep it from being seen well, like a slight couple letters on a map on a cloud covered/unmaped part of the large map or something..
