Wanna start a guild for economic power?

Can't believe how many people responded to the "GW Stock Market Crash" thread I posted. I'm a stats player. I crunch numbers in my head and I run economic scenarios over and over again. I didn't know there's that many economically minded people out there on GW. For us rich GW market traders, you wanna all form a new guild who's mission is to achieve economic supremacy over GW? A new united trade union where everyone has to have over 1million G's to join. And our activities are to dominate the market and become that powerful Cartel with the economic resources and power to drive the prices of the market any way we want. And then the Devs will realize our economic strangle hold on the game and force us to disband our guild. But we will go underground and maintain contacts. Becoming a secret GW organization amassing extreme amount of economic power and secretly directing the way people plays GW through economic infiltration, coercion and subjugation. We could call ourselves "The Hidden Coin" or some other dark and subversive names.
I love those secret society stuff.

I would, but do you really want to lower the standards to allow in the single millionaires? I think there should be higher standards than that.

Oh oh oh! And when we achieved absolute domination in GW, we will then secretly using the influence to assert our will into WoW. And when we achieved absolute domination in WoW, then our ranks will be bolstered with even more like minded devious capitalists. We will send them to secretly infiltrate all other online RPGs until we dominate ALL the online RPGs in the world! And then! Only then! We will use the power from all those online RPGs and slowly find ways to infiltrate real world trade organizations starting with eBay! Eventually! We will control the OPEC, the G8 summit, the European Union and the secret organization that started as a simple trade union guild in GW will grow to dominate the whole human race! PHAAahhAHHAAAHAAAAAHAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!

You can't. "Chinese Farmers" own the WoW economy. Stupid Auction Houses...

Too Republican-sounding for my taste - also a waste of time, I'd rather play the game than the market.
Anyone want to form a socialist society of guilds?

During the last beta I had joked around with some friends about making "THe Trade Federation" guild, and basically just be big-time traders. It was a joke, but nowadays I kinda wish we had done it.

I still don't understand how people think that gold is worth anything at all until it's actually exchanged for goods. People brag to me about how much gold they have all the time, I'm like... "Well done? What will you spend it on?" their reply is always the same; "I don't really have anything to spend it on, I just like to have it."
IxChel
Well, if I was a big-time trader; being in a guild that specializes in trading would have a serious advantage over other traders. For example, some of the guild members could specialize in goods specifically for warriors, necromancers, etc. With a bit of software support, you could even list your goods on-line and provide "guild-wide" shopping. If someone makes a sale (refers someone else), you can work out a 10% commission, etc. Normally, if you don't have something that someone is wanting, you lose the sale. However, if you're in a trading guild, and you know that someone else in the guild _has_ that item; you can "make" the deal and then collect a commission on your sale. For example, on the guild-chat you could go:
Hey, I've got a sucker here that wants a Vampric Hammer and is willing to pay 250K for it. Quick, anyone got one?

we are sort of a cartel here at NBA me and 3 others are rescource collectors/crafters/traders on top of being farmers of gold items...my one ranger vault has been filled up with 16 new gold items just from todays runs....which consisted of me trying to prove griffons have not been nerfed..its just people have crappy luck today so far the count is 7 swords 5 axes 1 bow 2 hammers 1 shield which sold for 300k on the forums lmao and uh my friend Da Cebuano is a loot fiend.....if i am having badluck with loot he gets all the gold drops and vice versa

I could probably aid in grabbing the economy by the neck, seeing as how I'm a raw material pack-rat, but wheres the fun in that?

I love the idea. I would join if I could get a title like "Illuminatus Number 14." Unfortunately, I'm not very good at economic domination. Any chance of having a junior varsity or something?

I love economics and gave my input in development. With Faction, the economic system is doomed to failure as the main customer has no reason to trade. I suggested a gold based reward system, but clearly that was not taken. The economy isn't that interesting to begin with, because there isn't much interesting to buy. The most valuable asset to a PvPer is faction at the moment and that isn't tradable.
You need some way to use money to influence people. The best use I have found for gold is to level new characters quickly and make friends. If I want a rune or a component I will cash in some faction.

Please.. not more rewards for Pvpers.
In fact I'd suggest they take sigils out of HoH drops too. They have their fame and faction, we have our gold, let's keep it separate.

Alot of these people with such an interest in economics don't really know anything about economics.
Do you really believe that a good way to start a secret society is posting about it openly on a website?

No one actually knows what would happen if we ever did what we plan as it has never been done before. And if you think that the entire idea was posted on that thread you are sorely mistaken. I ask you: Did you read that whole thread before saying that we would be broke? I pointed out quite clearly in their that we don't really care about how much gold we would lose. As I don't really feel like starting the debate from that thread again I will not comment on anymore posts about it and would ask you to like wise not mention it. I am tired of all the PMs, IMs, and e-Mails asking me how to make money.
Now Hydrak I reported that bug but after every update for about 24 hours it goes unfixed and then ANet fixes it. I think that they are building the updates of an older build without the bug fix in it. As for robbing the traders I didn't really do that either. Buying slowly over time and not selling is stocking but we never actually sold the items and if I did I would prolly lose money.

My larger point is that alot of the people who try to back up their theories about GW economic trends try to use economic terms and don't know what they're talking about.
I haven't done enough research into the in-game specifics of what's currently going to speculate into a market trend. So don't look to me for advice on what to do right now.
But my point is: I actually am an economist. Most people who talk about economics aren't.
hydrak
The only power in this game are the updates. No player or players in this game can form an economic power. Besides a few priceless rare items, gold are next to nothing in this game. 1000 plats is worth half or 2/3 of the fissure armor set, and nothing more. There is absolutely no way any group of players can control the gw economy except slowly driving up the inflation.
Prove me wrong by trying to control the price of ectoplasm for example. You can drive up the price slightly by using all your gold and buy up everything from the traders. But there is absolutely no way you can get the price back down to less than 2k which was the price the first few weeks of GW. Thus you can't control the GW economy.

The point, Hydrak, is that they would be cutting off the Ecto market completely. The price would be INSANE at the traders if they bought enough, and then they could sell it back to everyone at their leisure, pretty much securing a monopoly on Ectos for a good while.
I would join something like this, but I don't farm, so I don't have 1 mill in my storage. Hell, I don't even have 10k in storage. I'm broke! But if you ever wanted to farm and have someone sell off your rares for ya, I'd do it. Like a lacky, or a grunt.

good luck on your monopoly.
if you try, and IF you are succesfull, i'm sure you will become 'popular', and ruin your name in this game. enjoy playing :P

So, for all of you with 1000 plats of gold in each account and dream of controlling the ecto economy, I'd say burn all your gold buying ectos from the trader and see what will happen to the trader price. Beside a slight increase, I'd say absolutely nothing will happen.

And all I can say is I agree with that statement. It's like people in RL who are like, "Dude! My shares of Disney are up ten dollars!" Hey... good for you, but unless you sell them, you're still in a hole. What you have rarely matters. What you do with what you have, especially in this game, is what matters. All that time building up millions with nothing to buy could have been spent in the HoH getting better at PvP and winning Fame and Faction and Sigils.
