ESRB Petition to Change GW Rating

GW is an online only rpg. They recently added the "ale" drink into the game. Before ESRB reviewed the game was before the release. I am confident that the "ale" may suggest to kids that "ale" is all fun and games. By adding the alcoholic beverage in game, it glamorizes the use of them. This is why I think ESRB should review the GW rating of Teen.

Also in GW a lot of people act criminally. This game has scammers who scam other such as ***name removed*** and nothing much is done to them. By allowing scammers to get away, they promote the ideology that criminals are not punished. Farthermore, people in game may harass others. If no action is used to prvent this then, I believe this game should be slapped with a harsher rating.

This game also has people stripping down to undergarments and engaging in a dance like sex act. This is highly inapporpriate for 13 year olds to witness.

This is why I want to petiton here and then see if I can get the ESRB to review the rating. Sign below if you agree.

GTA San Andras was slapped with AO, this game should be M because of the sex dances. ESRB should review every MMO every 6 months.

The game was reviewed by the ESRB and given a rating, it was then released to the public and has been out for ovr 2 months now. It is my opinion is you are wasting your time trying to get the game rerated now, it's to late and not necessary. As for your arguments as to why it should be re-reviewed, isn't what you are sighting as reasons been in or allowed in other on-line games that have been rated Teen?

This has already been suggested... but on the ESRB it says, "Game Experience May Change During Online Play", so there is little to no chance of it being changed.

The game lets people dance in underwear to engage in sex, so it should be reviewed.

How many 13 year olds do you know that wont have been drunk or even had sex before? I know plenty kids that age that are complete hooligans, theiving and drinking and stealing.

Britney '1 day marriage' Spears is probably most pre teens idol, or was, and theres probably more refrences to sex drugs alcohol and violence on morning afternoon or evening TV than there is the whole of Guild Wars.

Plus beer rules, so no, no need to change the rating. Guild Wars is no more explicit than some kiddie TV shows for violence, let alone the news or pop videos, and changing the rating is highly likely to affect sales, even if its a small way.

Come to think of it this is a stupid idea, have you ever SEEN the real world? methinks not.

All it takes is parental supervision. That will solve all your video game rating problems.

Ratings are given based on a games content, what rude/sick/immature people do with that content has nothing to do with it. If you will notice all online games say "Rating may change when online" somewhere in the packaging. I believe GuildWars has this stated right on the box.

Let me remind you that GW should be reviewed because evey month it gets updated. Online is the only way to play GW so "Game Experience May Change During Online Play" is BS.

GTA got that slapped on their box because it was in the game that they released, they just "overlooked" that little hot coffee mod. This is a different case.

Also the game is rated "T" for teen, and depending on where you live, drinking is allowed for some teens. Also all the characters in the game are adults mate, it's not like it's showing kids drinking or anything.

The generalizations in this astound me. I am an adult, and have yet to take a swig of beer, vodka, whiskey, or any other hard liquor, and most of my friends are the same.

Brittney or whatever her name is is a ho, in my opinion. She wasn't my "teen idol" nor was she for anyone I knew.

Just because other people like to screw stuff up in the real world, doesn't mean I have to be like them..

Btw, game rating shouldn't be changed. But the label on the back should mention the ale, since it was implemented by Anet.

Starcraft and Warcraft 3: Players make maps that have images and actions that are worse than anything in Guild Wars.

They still have a Teen rating and they each have been out long enough for people to see everything that goes on.

Movie - Charlie's Angels (I'm just coming up with examples): Rated PG-13 for action violence, innuendo and some sensuality/nudity.

Guild Wars is no worse than that movie.

If you are referring to the female elementalist and female ranger dances. Then, yes, they are a little suggestive but nothing quite raunchy.

IMO, guild wars doesn't really deserve an M rating. No extreme violence or sexual content built in.

It's not like the rating affects you personally. If you think it is inappropriate and you have children, don't let them play. Otherwise, no problems at all.

You know, if you think that dancing = sex, and underwear = nudity, then you probably shouldn't have an internet connection. I don't think this guy is serious anyway, I think IHBT

Actually, the use of alcoholic beverages often is grounds for a higher rating. Hence why games like Earthbound have, 'Coffee' -_-.
While I may not really care what the ESRB thinks, for those who do, this may be a valid concern.

Inappropriate conduct is dealt with. Scamming through bait and switch methods and what-not are the fault of the person who failed to doublecheck the item. Yes they're immoral nevertheless, but the trade itself is wholly legit.
Tell me the police are going to interfere because you bought something that didn't work as you thought it would, or you didn't bother to inspect the item well enough, or read the box, and were misled by your own ignorance?
If you see people conducting themselves inappropriately, though, take screenshots and submit them to the ANET support, and it'll be taken care of if possible.

Cartoons have characters stripping down to their undergarments and even dancing the hula, which might be conceived as mildly sexual in nature. What about all those pink+purple hued female cartoon characters that attempt to seduce the males?
And unfortunately, anyone can engage in improper conduct in public anywhere, prior to being caught and dealt with. The dance has been there prior to release as well.
Besides, suggestive themes often falls under T for teen rating.
Lunar: Eternal Blue even had nudity, albeit artful [naked, but things like nipples weren't drawn, and it wasn't sexual in nature.] and it was T rating as well.

Please go to here-

to address any concerns about the rating.

A petition is something you should reserve for if nothing is done and you feel you disagree with their reply.

Buddy, you can push the "duck" button repeatedly in any game that allows it and turn it into a sex-related insult to whoever's corpse you're doing it over, but they didn't intend for people to act so childish and take it in such a way. The people dancing in their undergarments? Who CARES. The game is rated TEEN and any teenager knows what a girl in her underwear looks like.

Hell do they ban BEER commercials from TV? No. Do they ban things like lingerie commercials? Err...no, and how many kids do you think watch that?

The game doesn't encourage drinking, or sex, in any manner. When you drink loads of ale, you waste a lot of money, and you get really screwed up. This should tell anyone playing that when you drink mass amounts of alcohol, you "waste" money and get screwed up depending...honestly, it's not like GTA where you're TOLD to go out, murder people, hire prostitutes, etc. It's an RPG game where people can change clothes down to their "undies" and drink some "ale" if they feel the need. That to me, is teen. Hell PG13 movies have worse stuff than that.

While I understand your frustration, the MMO does state "Game experience may change during online play." By legal standards, this covers ANet for most things that can happen.

BUT. You can make an argument that "online play" has nothing to with built-in portions of the game (ale, dances, underwear...). "Online Play" only covers material added by the online experience (user interaction, etc.)

The 'ale' portion of the game, while the action is voluntary, is pushing the limits of possibly requiring 'alcohol consumption'. It is more realistic in that it offers physical effects of imbibing. The underwear and physical dances of some characters is certainly 'suggestive themes' at times.

Personally, I do not believe the game should be re-rated. I believe it is in keeping with a PG-13 movie which puts it pretty much in the 'Teen' category.

Everyone agrees that ESRB ratings are not terribly scientific anyway. People are drafted off the streets of New York to play and rate the games, how much MORE unscientific can that be? It's why one game that has you bombing Iraqis and a Nancy Drew mystery game both have the exact same rating. The ESRB has even less guidelines than the MPAA has for rating movies (such as, go over a certain number of 'words' and you'll get PG-13, or show this piece of anatomy and it's straight to R).

If you feel strongly enough about it, write your congressman/woman and let them know your feelings on game ratings. I have no doubt that eventually a form of legislation will wind up on the floor of the Congress.

NOT-Nomads Of Turmoil

ESRB has NO control over the gameplayers nor does Anet other when it's reported to them or observed by an in-game moderator.

There are 12yr old kids I know who's parents bought them San Andreas.....go petition so that the parents restricted/fined/admonished in some way.

Vote: NO! to the above proposition

Diablo 1 is no where as bad as this game and so GW should be M rated. No one scams in Diablo 1. No one drinks ale. Diablo 1 is M for blood. Graphics in Diablo 1 are no where as good. All I ask is for ESRB to re-review this.

You mean it suggests that ale just rips you off and you should never buy it if you care about your savings?

It's good for 13 year olds to experience people like this in a fantasy world. If they get scammed in GW, they lost some virtual gold, but now they'll know to be wary about shady deals. If they get scammed in real life, they'll lose real money.

The dances are not like sex acts. They're like dances. Anyone can see the same level of behavior by going to a beach. Should we restrict beaches to people 18 or older? I don't see how the dancing is highly inappropriate. Should we shelter teenages from anything that some people may view as being morally ambiguous?

Well I checked the ESRB site and figured this out for GW, based on their rating descriptions and content descriptions:
Violence
Blood
Use of Alchohol
(Arguably) Partial Nudity

Still sounds like a T game to me...

I Dont even think "Game experience May Change Online" applies to this. The ESRB knows damn well that all this is in the game because its required if your going to get your game rated you have to

Quote:
To get a game certified with an ESRB rating, publishers fill out a detailed questionnaire explaining exactly what's in the game, and submit it to ESRB along with actual videotaped footage of the game, showing the most extreme content and an accurate representation of the context and product as a whole.
& When the game goes "gold" and is about to be released to the public

Quote:
When the game is ready for release to the public, publishers send copies of the final product to the ESRB. The game packaging is reviewed to make sure the ratings are displayed in accordance with ESRB standards. Additionally, ESRB's in-house game experts randomly play the final games to verify that all the information provided during the rating process was accurate and complete.
In shorter terms, they know its in there and this is the rating that they gave and its not going to change.
