Do we play GW for fun?

Are we playing GW to look for fun, enjoyable few hours everyday for entertainment? Or has it become our alternative life, a world that has more problems and more rage than our real life?

All I see is complain complain complain whine and then more complain about GW's PvE content, PvP content, lack of leet weapons, lack of items drops, lack of gold coin drops, economy stability, lack of game update, too much game updates, etc etc.

Yet, we still play it every night and still come here to make angry posts everyday.

I've played plenty of online games and GW community is by far the most angry bunch of posters I've ever seen. And not to offend anyone, but this is also the community with the most non-valid complains and suggestions/demands.

I played EverQuest hardcore for 3 years, actived in various forums and I thought I'd seen everything. But no, GW complains/suggestions/demands are by far worse.

Please, take a step back, deep breath, close your eyes and mediate for 3 seconds before complaining about everything thing in this, imo extremely fun and balanced game.

I get a couple hours of playtime in the eve before bed to unwind and just have fun, and really don't have complaints about the game as it is. I don't farm, rarely PvP, could care less about the cosmetics of my armor (black? purple? whatever.)...

You're right, there certainly does appear to be far too many that take it far too seriously.

You didnt play EQ early in its life then as they had to close down their forums and move to a petition style submittions because it had so many bug reports, balance requests, and complaints. Top tier guild forums could be just as juvinile and the class specific boards pose many of the same style of commentary seen here, in an attempt to help improve the game. I believe you also passed over the hundreds to thousands of "im quitting" style posts, that many of which took chunks of the playerbase out of the game opposed to just threats of leaving. Quite frequently, their characters stayed around as new alt accounts, but that is another story entirely.

Games have growing pains, which is reflected upon places that people converse about them. Some games grow out of them, while others never stop having them. I think thats the only way you can really rate the quality of change over time.

Perhaps people like it so much that they complain and make suggestions by way of protecting the game?
You know...like loving it to death

i play for fun and have not complained about the game as it is what it is warts and all.

if i am exploring and something else comes up that is more important (cat wanting to be petted etc) my character is on her own and will either be where i left her or at the rez shrine (big deal)

it is there for me to have fun and when i tire of it i will read/reread a good book or something else

yes i will buy the second chapter as well

I actually played more then 3 years of EQ come to think of it. I played from early 2000 to mid-2004 mostly hardcore. then I turned softcore and eventually stopped.

Yeah, I've seen the worse times of the whines and complains on various EQ forums including the official SoE boards. But to some extend, half of those complains had valid reasons.

Once upon a time..

You realize that by posting this thread, there is now an additional complaining thread -- a thread complaining about the complainers?

In my honest opinion as a poster (and not as a mod), a "Guild Wars Appreciation" thread would do the job much better than "A Please Stop Complaining" thread, since the later usually disintegrates into flames.

I do tend to lean towards Tactical's opinion, too -- the minute that the boards completely empty out of complaints, we've either died and entered into a perfect world, or Guild Wars has died in the eyes of its public who no longer cares enough to fight for their game. Sure, it's a huge pain to mod, but I would rather be aggravated by an active forum, than flutter dismally over a deserted, depopulated field of long-forgotten threads.

Well the only complaint, i have was when i first got the game i figured out there was only 8 people you could fight with, and not against unless PvP, I think it would be so cool to have full mmorpg, But 8 people is great too, i Guess you don't have to worry about Pkers, and If you do , feel like hanging with alot of people there is, always town..

Heh you missed out on most of the fun stuff then. Z axis and pathing exploits, warriors with no innate magic resistance, the period in time when warriors would resist beneficial spells, paladins being warriors with healing, picking locks not working, apply posion not working, alchemy not working, the difficulty (or lack there of) to obtain basic spells (wis versus int casters), over crowded server areas and so on. Actually you would have caught it in a different forms throughout the game considering your play period. Im sure you noticed how they broke bards with every other patch though.

Most complaints have valid reasons behind them, but in order to understand them you have to understand the point of view it is comming from. Gaming experiences vary and typically all of them are valid.

This is my first MMORPG (correct term?) and it doesn't seem any worse than the other online games I've played (mostly FPS's like Call of Duty, BF 1942, BF2, BiA, etc) as far as forums goes. Opinions, likes, dislikes, rants, etc are as numerous as people are different. I just chalk it up to human nature.

But in answer to your question, yes I play it for fun.

I play a bard as my main (actually, I would say one of my mains as I play almost account full of 60+ characters, but only raid as bard mainly). So yeah, I know first-hand about the bard issues.

Yeah, those are some of the valid complains. And then there are about 10x other complains about various other stuff. Mostly is xxx class sucks, or yyy class needs zzz abilities, or this class isn't as powerful as that class in those specific areas etc.

I have my own complains too. Mainly about rangers need 59 levels and 40ish AAs before they can effectively use archery as main from of attack.

anyway, off topic...

I play for fun and, as someone else said, if it gets nerfed or frustrating, I find elsewhere to mess around. Believe it or not, I have had far more positive experiences in PUGs than negative. I still get a good laugh out of some people and their behavior but, really, I have a great time. But then again, I'm one of the hated "casual gamers".

I also don't play every day. That way, it keeps things new and fun rather than becoming overly frustrating and boring. I play other games in between and love every minute of GW when I come back. Great game, great time nearly 100% of the time for me.

I play for fun. Nerfs don't bother me..

For example...in City of Heroes there will be a major "nerf" occuring soon to a variety of classes..many people say it spells doom...but it hasn't affected me at all. I just change how I do things...I adapt. some people have trouble with that apparently.

I think there are several stages of this wonderful game:

1) Amazement and bliss- At first the PvE portion of the game is beautiful and exciting. The storyline is great, the first time through.

2) Mild frustration combined with learning- As you learn about the drops and things you want to collect and unlock you realize that many hours are necessary to create a complete feeling in the PvE side. Many people play games to get 100% of the game completed. These players probably feel the most frustration faced with Guild Wars. There is great challenge in the completion of all goals so that brings the next phase.

3) Bold determination and dedication- This is where character two, three, and sometimes four come out. The hours may rack into wild proportions, too

4) Farming for everything- Somewhere is a farming character that is being created to unlock all those mysterious runes. Any weapon unlocks found are wonderful at the same time. THis character is also the pride of skill unlocking since skill points are not nearly as hard to manage when farming. Any Guild Wars player that does not have a farmer will miss this step and be stuck in the previous step or spend some extra time in the next step.

5) Cry of frustration- Hundreds of hours later, lots of stuff unlocked it seems like you will never get there. You may have that 15K armor, but by this time you really want to unlock a few Superior Runes, first that Vigor that you seem to be farming right around. If you don't farm this time spent will be highly greater. Somewhere around this timeframe you have found money to not really be an issue, but money is not really an issue for anyone, so that Perfect Storm bow that you wanted for your birthday is not available unless you farm more than the next guy. So, you farm more than the next guy, get that thing you wanted and realize how much time you wasted.

6) Lost without a home. By now you have run around doing the same high level missions over and over with pugs so much that if you had a PvP crowd around you, you have lost them. But, now you are more prepared for PvP with the skills you were missing and the Runes unlocked, even if there are a few left that you want. Faction seems much more useful when you only need to unlock 25% of the rest of everything.

7) Battle with blood in your smiling teeth. Nothing left to do, join some PUGs in the Tombs and see what flavor is going around for the week. Join up with them, find a counter, rinse and repeat. Faction starts rolling in faster than you ever realized it would. Hint: You cannot gain faction by playing PvE. And you can unlock the things that are really important to you.

8) Who cares- about the economy, 15K armor, weapons, dye (especially). None of that matters in the PvP world. I have my Uber characters in the PvE world, but those characters are not versatile enough for PvP (No Matter What You Say A.Net, PvE characters are limited by too many variables for that) so you and the rest of the PvP players that only care about effectiveness choose a color for you armor in the PvP menu and run with it.

9) The game is as fun as it was pre-release again- Those few skills, upgrades and runes you are missing don't really matter at this point and the thing that pisses you off the most is going into battle without the right counter.

I don't know stage 10, I am somewhere between 8 & 9 and I feel like the complaining is just an example of how Elite the Devs made the PvE world. I don't care anymore. I play PvE better than most of the people I play with, (when my game is on and I'm not seeing double ) and that special armor means nothing except they had a good group somewhere and may or may not have bought stuff off of eBay to get what they wanted.

I have sucked the PvE in Guild Wars dry of my share of money, weapons, and runes. In my quests for skill points I have collected 3 ecto. One day, I will have a full stack.

If you got hooked into PvP while UAS still existed, sorry. I was too dumb to figure out the UAS till the last few hours of the last beta, so I say ignorance is bliss.

If you are a PvEer that wants the most Uber stuff, well, that stuff is Elite. It is for those with the most time on their hands and the foresight to get it. Take a look at what you want to get and try to think of a more fun way to get it.

If you are starting and finding roadblocks, well there is light. There really does come a time where you feel like you are as competitive as you wanted to be when you set out trying to be so.

Edit: I started typing after two pasts had been made. I guess I'm long winded, and probably pointless.

And, no i dont think you fall into the creepy pervert gamer catagory,...unless perhaps all gamers are in this catagory..

Hardass for Prez!!! Hardass for Prez!!!

No way in the known universe is there a better way to sum up GW than what Hardass just said...all wrapped in a bowl of strawberries!

I enjoy GW as an alternate world to lose myself, and be one with something other than what many of us cannot stand. In saying that, how could I possibly find too much at fault:

- they nerf...I adapt
- they add..I play
- they change...I play

It is a wonderful game that I have no pressure, except for any that I put on myself, to perform or even keep up with the Jones. Yes I want a vamp 5:1, but nary a 50k gold piece will I drop on that. Someday I'll have it on my Shortbow of Defense...that I got from a collector and is only Blue but ranks highest on the Shortbow 'damage per second' list. As you see, get good armor, good basic bows, learn your skill, and travel/fight/smite/smash/collect/farm/explore/smack-talk with the best of them.

See YOU in the Fissure...that's all folks!

Casual gamer here, but I complain about economic stability because:

1) I enjoy economics (stfu, I like history and politics too)

I believe you can progress without ever buying any of the runes and dyes. I've gotten 2 characters to 20 and passed droknar's forge area without ever buying any runes. I don't even buy stuff from other players, it's actually quite easy to get max dmg weapons and max defense armor.

Perhaps we can turn this into an appreciation thread right now :P GW is one of the greatest MMORPGs I've played, simply for the fact that problems in other MMORPGs have been dealt with, making gameplay far more enjoyable. Remember the days of killstealing and looting? How about chat spam you couldn't turn off? Yes, I realize, there's still spam going on in local chat - but the great thing is you can turn off chat whenever you wish. My trade and local channels are always off, unless I want to find a PUG or do some quick trading.

Also what I love about GW... you don't need a ton of money to be good. Most of the game is skill and teamwork. High end equipment isn't insanely hard - everyone can eventually gain access to Droknar's Forge, and you don't need armor worth 347832k - unless you want to.

All in all, I play GW because I enjoy it, and I don't think anyone would play if they didn't, so =)

Im a casual gamer i can play up to two hours a day before i get dsitracted by Half Life games. But this game's economy makes it slow progression because a string can be worth 75k yet a gold max dmg bow can only make 5k. Also everyone critizes you if its "overpriced" according to cheap people.

Due to bad decisions by Arena.Net, there is no fun left in GW for anyone that realizes that the PvE content sucks, and that there is far too much grind for the PvP to be good (even if you have everything, what are the chances your PUG will?). So we come here to try to get it fixed, and have yet to see any response to the problems, besides Faction, which was the worst fix they've thrown down to shut us up so far.

Hasn't worked yet, has it?

But, truly, you can only speak for yourself. No one here has the right or reason to claim to speak for anyone other than themselves. I still love the game. Do I play it every day? No. Do I play it for 10 hours straight on any given day when I -do- play? No but, then again, I have other stuff to do, RL issues, other games to play, etc.

I would write "in my oppinion", after every post I make, but that's a given.

Here's the problem, the way I see it:

In order to keep a balanced playing field, Arena.Net kept all items from being "über".
This Erased all PvE long term goals that usually kept them coming back for more.
To provide longevity to PvE, Arena.Net longthened the preperation time for PvP, a lot.
This pissed off PvPers.
This made an unfair playing field.

... In other words, they're back at square one.

The solution?

Give PvPers what they want: "everything on a silver platter" (it's not everything you *&$*ing idiots! We want to fight competitively! Our victories are not given to us on a silver platter are they? Then shut up!)

And Give PvEers what they want: Long term rewards, such as super über items, but make it so they can't use them in PvP.

There you have it. PvE Longevity, PvP competition with no preperation times, as promised.

The problem with fight competitively is that the arenas are open to BOTH PvP and PvE characters. How is it fair for a PvP character to have UAS when the PvE doesn't for the arena?

That's probably another discussion, Dargon, but the ideas that I've seen are for UAS to be implemented on an "as needed" basis. By that, it's been suggested that PvE players get UAS when they fight in the arenas, but ONLY then. When they venture out again into the PvE world, they revert back to what they originally had.

Weezer's post is correct in all that he says. My thinking is that it takes time and can't be done all at once in such a short amount of time. I do believe that good things come to those who wait.
