Summer Update Preview
Maxiemonster
I hope they wont bring it out, or get that boss out. I mean, what does a robot have to do in Guild Wars? The rest looks fine though, I hope there are some new skills/items I like
RTSFirebat
Its not a robot! It could be a machine Golem, which it most likely is. Haven't you played Bulder's Gate 2 where you have to fight Machine Golems, they are badass.
MSecorsky
I'll bet that somewhere inside that uber-golem are some dwarves driving away. It may be that you have to kill the drivers to kill the machine.
Of course, I'm guessing...

Hey Alex... how about a few hints about the new critters/items/etc? Might shine a little sunshine on the doom-and-gloomers here.
Also... care to share any winning contest names?

Golems are magical constructs, you really sould check the origin of the golems.

You really expect that thing in the video to work WITHOUT magic?
Xellos
Yeah no offense, but it didn't show anything that was wow. The terrain and mapping I'll admit, can justify the whole summer, but imo, it was a waste of time. Sure, background looks awesome. But how many people care more about graphical arts then about interaction with the game? I rather have exploding bridges, cuttable or flamable trees, rocks that blow up, stuff like that in the old missions so that it makes it replayable. The giant robot in the end might be something new in GW, so I'll give credit to that, but pessemistically, the entire summer was spent on art and a robot from megaman.
I can definately say it's not going to attract alot of people who left playing the game. At most people will come back, play it, then leave. Your update doesn't add to the game as a whole, rather it's just extending the list of contents when your original list is not exactly great itself. Even Diablo 2 knows how to work their content, because they change alot of parts of the game though not all, but at least they still change/update some old parts of the game (uber diablo/baal/meph etc etc). They don't just abandon their old content like Anet does to Ascalon/Shiverpeaks/Kryta/Maguuma/CrystalDesert/Komolie.

I dunno Xellos, lava pouring on my head from above may be a neat new effect that opens the doors to a bunch of other effects.
Mormegil
Unlike many others here, I forgot my crystal ball somewhere and can't really say "the update will be great" or "it will suck big time".
I enjoy the game even with its flaws, so I hope the new content will fix the current issues and add something new as well, in terms of explorable areas or new features/tweaks.
I couldn't care less if "some people left" and the update "won't make them get back". Since the guys who left were mostly from Alpha-Beta (which, translated, means that most of them were just full of crap and arrogance, with the exception of a small minority composed by people like Ensign and Sarus), it doesn't feel strange at all. There are dozens of stories of hardcore players that left the game they worshipped after the Beta just because the developers had to adapt it to the retail version, same old. Besides, I know at least 50-60 players who left WoW or FFXI to play Guild Wars, and the assumption that "the elite of PvP" can't be replaced is one of the dumbest statement I've ever heard. To put it frankly, the "pro" tag some people were so proud of is the farthest thing from the arrogance they showed in every occasion, in game or on forums.
In conclusion, I'm positive (though not "excited", not yet at least) about the update, and sure that it will be at least a decent work. It probably won't radically change the mediocre PvE side of the game, but then again, I'm not much into PvE, so...

And though I agree that gameplay is just as important as graphics, the achievements of Guild Wars in the gameplay area are too easily forgotten: Diablo, WoW, and basically all single and multi-player fantasy RPG's rely on a handful of skills and feats that are basically the same through their many "ranks". None offer the variety of the almost infinite number of skill combinations in Guild Wars.

This is what Guild Wars had. It was so cool. Where did all these things go? Where was the promise? =( as far as I'm concerned, the Guild Wars that attracted me into buying the game isn't close to finished.

Ah, kids today are so spoiled that when presented with a technological marvel they gripe and moan without even a clue as to what to expect. How soon people forget the days of 8 and 16 bit computer games. C'mon folks, remember Pac-Man in all it's glory??? 2D block graphics at it's finest, cutting edge stuff! Missile command, Dig Dug, Centipede...
Now they gripe about the economy in a computer generated 3 dimensional world, with thousands of thousands of people interacting via a worldwide network of computers.
And Guild Wars is one of the best games currently out there doing this.
It would be nice if folks would stop attacking what they have and appreciate the fact that they even have it. It's absolutely freakin incredible stuff, and it's only going to get better.
I can't wait to play the games my kids will grow up playing.

I understand GW thinks that this method of anew game design is effective, but after a while it just isnt.
Theres a reason games with the mechanics like WoW work so well, because those mechanics are the perfect recipe for a great fun game.

Sc vs Wc3 is the analogy of Guild Wars beta vs current Guild Wars. The old one still had more draw. Did you even look at the link I gave? Caravan attacks? Destroyable objects? Taking advantage of streaming technology instead of sitting on your asses? The old version had things that the current version NEEDS. Anet is being an ass by not putting them in.
MSecorsky
You know... I came so close to buying WoW... until I saw that the only way to play it was to pay them monthly for a game that you paid them to leave the store with in the first place. Principle thing.
So Nizzy, when you go home and fire up the ol' puter, what game do you launch?

i dont fire up many games anymore
But WoW is honestly worth that 15 a month.
Its supply and demand, in wow, they demand new things, and the devs supply them, almost constantly.
Maybe Anet needs more employers
you called me nizzy, hahah, thats the first time someones called me that in a while

No offense on the Nizzy... I have an African Grey, Gizmo. We call her gizzy... your name just strikes that up in my head.
Edit: We also call her Gizzypoo... but I just couldn't.
Checked out the linked video. Interesting to see the differences inthe interfaces and the like. Missed the part about the caravans and such, but the puter at work here has a crappy speaker, so could barely make out what he was saying.

Yes, the devs make promises before their games go retail. Not always they release exactly what we're expecting.
Nizzim, mind if I ask you where's the link where Blizzard promises hundreds of 15 yrs old kiddies lvl 45 that kill low lvl players in the early zones of the game while yelling "OMFG I'm so leet and will pwn you stupid noob!!11!!"? Mind giving me the link where Blizzard promises horrible pvp lagfest in that mediocre update called Battleground? And where did Blizzard promise you could kill a mob 6 feet behind you swinging your blocky tauren hammer in the air like a perfect idiot?
One could say that Blizzard takes promises seriously.
Charcoal Ann
ANYWAY, back on track eh guys?
I have been on this game since release and i had no real qualms at that point and still i have no qualms. i have played enough games to know that this is a bloody good game and this add-on looks to be more of out of this same gold mine of joy that the entire game seems to have risen from. i was thinking that maybe the entrance to the footprint will be through that big temple to grenth... in snake dance i think?
Another thing you seem to be likening the furnace to the catacombs... does this mean there could be MULTIPLE entrances?

To get back on track, I totally agree with Charcoal Ann, with a little difference...I really wanted the new area to at least look like a dungeon. Apparently, it doesn't. There's no catacombish like scenery in GW, and maybe there will never be. Bad.
Nizzim
i would honestly play WoW if i had the money and computer
im not bashing GW, imjust saying, games shouldnt be released half-ass
Xpacks should take 6 months to make and should show 6 months of work, this took 3 months to make, maybe more since its been talked about almost since release, and only shows a month of work or so.
I hope the videos dont do it a justice, cuz thats not a very good justice

Ok Nizz you have 6 months to make a better game than GW.
Not very good? not that long ago Pong was state of the art!
Maybe GW is just not for you...like miniskirts just don't suit me ^^
Please get back on track i didn't read 5 pages of this just to hear you groan. i read it to hear comments on the film and i have heard you more than enough now.
Film Looks Cool

reading the part from the state of he game letter, it sounds to me, like most if not all of sorows furnace will be mainly for accended people. guess the guys in Dev have got to go with the largest groups, and all the folks that ran ahead <not mean like running, just meant like got there faster than me and mine> would need somehting to keep then playing other thn spanking peeps in the PvP arena and so forth.^^; still, hopeing that those that havent quite managed to get to acention will still at least be able to wander round the town/outpost part once they get there....that, for me, is the more important part, compared to the missions ect, i just like to travel to a new area in the game and look around. guess there should be a new class, Tourist |
