Restart Problems (exclusive to GW)

I played GW during the last beta event for a few days, probably totalling 10 hours. Never had any problems whatsoever.

Yesterday, and today, I have been having a problem where the game will just reboot my computer. This doesnt happen with any other programs, just guildwars and it didnt happen before for the other events, just since pre-retail (27th).

Sometimes it takes 10 minutes, sometimes an hour, then it just reboots totally. Very annoying and probably not too good for the comp. Is this a common bug? Can anyone offer a solution or explanation?

Thanks,
Ex

I was coming on to post about this exact same problem... almost.

Played in the last Beta event, everything ran great. About three hours before the Beta event went down, an update came through, so I restarted GW. After that, I would get random lockups: black screens, sound stops and I have to restart the computer. It could happen 2 minutes or 15 minutes after I rebooted and logged back in, but it happened enough times that I just gave up and waited for retail.

Now retails here and it's still going on... quite a pain.

if your not getting problems with HL2 or doom 3 it would probley take out heat or volagte problems becaue those are more demanding...does the computer just reboot during game or is there a mesage

do you have motherboard monitor if so let it run for a little while when you play and see what temps and voltages you are getting (although i am certain this is not the problem i still would like to rule it out entirely)

you might try a reinstall

does it happen at a certian point or a certain action (in DII if a certain spell was cast it would restart me )

if you could find something that happens around the restart that would help

i dont know the operating speed of your proc but if you have it OCed pull it back to normal speeds and give it a try

Actually, up until just now, it didnt give any messages, just auto reboot.

But just now, it gave me a bluescreen... I took down part of the message:

STOP 0x0000007E (0x0000005, 0xB6951DC0, ... [there was more...])

kmixer.sys

The kmixer.sys was just listed under the stop error.. any help? Again this wasnt happening before, just since april 27th!

So, an update for my problem.

I ran Driver Clean Pro to clear out any old ATI drivers and the game ran great for about 45 minutes... then when it crashed, instead of the black screen freeze it just rebooted completely (like your problem).

Now I'm trying a complete uninstall/reinstall of GW to see if it makes any difference, although I doubt it.

Update for my problem - I reinstalled all nforce drivers for my mobo (which is nforce 2 chipset), assuming there was some audio driver error.

Going to test now...

In this order: Run diskdefragmenter, reinstall audio drivers, reinstall Windows Media Player.

Try one, if it still doesn't work, try the next... etc.

To the OP:
Un-overclock your processor.

If you're on XP:

Right click on my computer, click properties. Then go to the Advanced tab and click the "settings" button under Startup and Recovery. Then uncheck the box that says "Automatically Restart". Click OK.

Now when your computer "black screens" it should be a blue screen and it should have an error report. Copy it down, and post it here next time it happens.

Also, try un-overclocking your processor as I am willing to bet that is quite a few peoples' problem in this thread.

I am having the exact same problem no idea what is causing it and it never happens in other games, i just reboot at random times while playing GW.

WinXP SP 2
AMD Athlon XP 3000+ not over clocked
Geforce 6600 GT TDH
1 RAM

I used to have this happen alot, then i realised my graphics cards fan was to blame so i got a new card 3 mounths ago and now it is only happening in GW,
as our specs are very simmilar i can't work out which part could be to blame for the reboots.

Read my post just above yours and come back with an error report.

there are a lot of people with this problem and similar specs...so everyone

make sure all drivers are up to date (video, audio, mobo)
make sure install is good (reinstall or repaid if needed)

if you are getting error msg it is not theremal

I am experiencing the same problem. Guild Wars randomly freezes/locks up after entering the game for a few minutes. All other 3d-accelerated games besides GW work fine, including more graphically-intensive games such as Doom 3, Half-Life 2 and Everquest II.

My temperature monitor reads Guild Wars as running significantly cooler than these other games, so it's definately not an over-heating issue. All audio, DirectX and graphics drivers are reinstalled and up-to-date. Have no idea what the problem could be. I get the feeling this is more a problem with the GW software than anything else. Perhaps a future patch could fix this?

Mine is still crashing after updating audio drivers... here is a quick question...

To all of those having this problem, did you install the retail box version, or are you using the downloaded client with a retail key you bought online?

Personally, I DLed the client and bought a key. Maybe the retail client doesnt have this bug?

PS - How do I reinstall media player? And how do I completely delete all my chipset drivers before i go ahead and reinstall?

Thx,

Great.. another error. At desktop when I click on my nvidia nfroce "tray option" icon, I just got this message --> "Incorrect size returned during FXMANAGER_ALLOCATE!" . This is after updating my driver, and I have never got this error before. After I clicked on that, I got another error popup --> " SndStorm.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close." Again, I have never seen this before.

Please Help!

No such luck there i have the retail version so it is not that.

ok here is the message:

Kmixer is a file used in the nforce 2 motherboards for the onboard sound card so i am going to try the drivers first for that any other ideas what it could be? please help, i want to play guild wars from what i have seen :P it is realy good.

if its in the audio on the mani board

i would make sure the audio driver is up to date as well as the nforce

you might also try disabelling the sound for a time to make sure that it is the problem. if that is you will need to contact GW

With a quick search I am unsure if the kmixer.sys file is a file used in NForce2 motherboards. My research has seemed to lean toward it being a Windows file related to Windows Media Player. Jajo, do you have an NForce 2 motherboard? If you can't tell, just post your motherboard model and we'll be able to tell. And while blue screens usually aren't symptoms of "thermal" problems, they can in fact be problems caused by overclocking due to memory errors.

The BSOD they are getting is in no way related to the installation of Guild Wars. I would not recommend reinstalling Guild Wars as I highly doubt that will fix the issue. Have either of you tried defragging yet?

kmixer is a .sys file used by windows, its a system audio driver kernel, but I dont know if its corrputed or it isnt meshing with the game somehow

and i deff have nforce2 chipset which i just updated the chipset drivers from files on nvidia (but without removing the old drivers first, i just wrote over them... i dont know how to find and remove all of the old drivers.........)

I am going to take your advice and defrag right now

Ill keep ya updated...

I turned off the auto reboot, but the crash still reboots the comp automatically... I've yet to actually see a BSOD.

I don't think my mobo is a Nforce config, as my case is a Shuttle (and they use their own proprietary mobos)... but you guys can probably tell better than I could at this point.

Edit: Yeah, I defragged right after uninstalling/reinstalling my ATI drivers.

There seems to be a problem with the nv4_disp.dll file (nvidia driver). Log files show this is the file causing this problem for me. Have run out of memory (running 1 gig DDR)
I run EQ2 with no crashes or errors at all. I am also running a 256MB Asus v9570
video card. I am going to try the omega drivers mentioned in another thread, and I will let you know if they work

Can somebody tell me how to completely remove all of the old drivers (nforce chipset and/or audio only and/or video only).

Thanks...

ok i was just seeing if it was bsod- that is not happening i guess

if you need to see what mobo you have and what chipset get cpu-z it can tell you

The problem exists for me and I don't have an Nforce chipset (MoBo is P4C800-E w/ Intel chipset). Turning off the sound also does nothing.

So I've tried everything in the thread so far, to no avail. New drivers, defragged HD, reinstalled GW, no OCd processor... I'm convinced it's gotta be something with the client, because (like the OP) only GW gives me this problem. Which is a shame, because I want to play so bad!

and a bump.

There is a little known proggy that you might use to check driver probs. I used to get the kmixer.sys error.

If you go into Start> Run and type in verifier.exe it will give you options to check non-WHQL drivers. Rather than try to explain the whole process, the info is here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q244617/

It's a bit technical. Maybe others on the board could simplify it a bit.

What motherboard do you guys use?
i had major problems during the E3 for everyone weekend last year

my pc started to turn off during playing GW.
windows was corrupt and my pc turned off after 5-15 minutes during everything i did, not only playing games.

i never thought GW had something to do with it, and i still think that.

i don't remember the exact name of my motherboard but it was an ASUS.

it stopped after i changed the power supply and motherboard, got a Gigabyte now, after 4 months of troubles (and a bad pc shop...).

never had problems again.

Until yesterday GuildWars NEVER crashed. Then it started... getting different BSODs after 5-45 minutes playing. I first thought it was my gfx card (i was so sure of it i went and bought a new one), but the problem is still there. I'm pretty pissed now

I have done everything i know to do, and am convinced it is a problem with the client, not my system. I ran this game in beta with no problems at all. Now at release is unplayable. If they don't fix this soon, I'll be taking my copy back.

Guys, make sure you use the support system, so they actually know about it. It seems the unstability has something to do with the client. Another machine was running fine on all the BWE until the last one, and now carried over into retail.

Are you using onboard sound or do you have a Sound Card? If so, what kind?

I've got an Audigy Soundcard. I removed it before i re-installed windows and used onboard sound with the new installation... but that didn't help.

as for graphic cards i have tried a geforce TI 4400 and a 6600 GT, both with the same results.

I'm using onboard sound, but the problem is definitely the client. I didn't get it in the first BWE that I was in, but in the last one and retail I crash all the time.

I'm conversing back and forth using the support system now. So far they just keep telling me to recheck installations and reinstall drivers. I've yet to get another reply.

This is way frustrating to pay $50 for a game and get excited to play it only to be completely unable to for seeminly no reason. If its indeed a problem with the client, I sure hope they fix it soon.
