9/7/05 Sorrow's Furnace : Update Log
Toral Xi
Not being able to change refund points on the fly does not bother me that much, but I can see where some people would be put off by this. I am just glad that you can refund/reassign them as much as you like. I use the same character for PVP and PVE and it would be a royal pain when you ran out of points especially when you are testing out multiple builds for PVP. I really like the increased faction for PVP also.

Well, RPG POV and real life, if I learn how to drive then I learn how to type on a keyboard I dont forget how to drive, so I can do it again everytime I want.
Anyway, never used refund points out of outposts, but maybe I need it sometime, so dont know why they changed it that way.

Can change from Axes to Swords to Hammers ... that's great.
Well I could use some more room for armor. But you can only do that IN TOWN. You can't switch from an attacking warrior to a running warrior during the course of a mission or farming session anymore.

There are those of us who have mastered the art of using skill sets to their fullest potential, being able to adjust attributes on the fly is of critical importance in doing so.
This is a nerf all wrapped pretty package albeit but a nerf just the same and a huge one at that.
Obviously it was aimed at further undermining the soloer but it again like most other nerfs punishes the whole for the acts of the few, and this time the few absolutely did not deserve it.

To the folks who were complaining about having to pay to send guild invites: from what I understand, you only have to pay to invite "guests" into your guild, regular invites are still free.

Btw, now that it cost money to invite people to the guild, it's gonna be the doom for MoX. Hahahaha, sorry El Hombre De Turbo but your evil plans are not gonna work nomore!

I sat there waiting from 10-12 pm eastern time for that darn update, and let me tell you... I LOVE THIS UPDATE.
I like the fact of 100g costs for inviting someone, it will put at least a slow down on blind invites (im sure those rich guilds wont be much affected at all, its not like its HARD to make 100g).
I like that increased costs to skills, it will stop the people from just mass buying every skill they want from every trainer they can and will make them be more selective and only take what they NEED. 1k actually seems like a great price on a skill and I have no trouble paying it (im actually poor and saving money for a fissure warrior helm, but still even for a new character I would not care, it makes skills seem actually more worth your while).
Grenths and sorrows? I been there within 2 hours of the update (we got lost the first time going the wrong way, went north of granite instead of south =\, dumbass lady said she knew the way *sigh*). But I will say I liked the places, very challenging indeed and it doesnt feel like endless grind, I like the idea of the green unique items (even if it does remind me of evil diablo 2, GRRRR, though i love you angelic set! *hugs*) not to mention sorrow's furnace looks ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS, even the parts that arent dark and firey, the green grassy areas (like the tomb of the rubicon quest) Look very well put together as well. Like the new monsters (but omg I am already hating dark titans with a PASSION, you kill them and they come back again but smaller but still higher level than you! they start level 28 and come back after death as slightly smaller level 24's, not to mention the frost titan comes back as 2 creatures, or at least it looked like that to me) But I hate that some monsters can rez now e.e that just makes the game a bit frustrating lol.
I love the idea of keys for chest, I was skeptical at first but the first chest I opened with the new key system gave me a rare air staff, though excited at first I am convinced that obviously different area/chests/keys give different items, because the times I have opened a chest and watching others, there have been a ASS-LOAD of air staffs in the shiverpeaks area and got one in sorrows furnace, so soon I hope to look for perdition rock chests <3.
I could care less about the faction, as I do very little pve with how long it originally took me to get faction, i still dont have 1000, though im sure i'll enjoy the fights more with more faction at stake and finally get my first pvp unlock.
Quests, havent tried them except the unknowable, unspeakable one about the tomb of the rubicon thing, it was challenging at first then very hard as one person had to stay behind to watch the dude and guard him as we got balthazate crystals, her and the guy got killed why we were gone so we were sent back to the deldrimor war camp.... DAMN!
No refund points anymore..... FINALLY! that was annoying for me to RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO-kill for exp to get refund points.
PVP change: pets stay closer to their owners..... This one I am split on as my best character is a ranger beastmaster, I would like to have him upfront and me a bit behind away from the action, healing my pet and spamming feral lunge and scavenger strike, followed with brutal strike when they get low hp O_o.
Of course there will be naysayers, but less and less as more fixes are made. I was actually expecting a huge uproar over the harder UW =p.

Yes, I am aware that it's still somewhat possible to do it, but they took the "challenge" just high enough that you also could call it "next to impossible". It will discourage 99.99% of all players to still go there and I assume that's what ANet wanted for whatever reason. Well, it's their game, I don't have to be happy with that decision.
In the meanwhile I also did the first quests in the new areas and I have to say that SF rocks. At least something to dry the tears about UW a bit...

Anyway, never used refund points out of outposts, but maybe I need it sometime, so dont know why they changed it that way. Yeah, you pretty much have no clue. A better analogy is driving a car or riding a motorcycle. If you decide to learn how to drive a car and then wish to switch to riding a motorcycle, you don't hit a button and suddenly lose all knowledge of how to drive a car and now know how to ride a motorcycle. The crazy thing is Anet still allows you to do this, you just can no longer do it between battles or between spell casts like Cobalt was doing. johnnylange

I have to say I like this update a lot, particularly the permanent increases to faction gain in PvP and the fact that Priests are now present in the PvP lobbies.
I think this update did a good job of satisfying both camps (PvE vs. PvP) without making anyone settle for less. The PvE peeps still have to do a lot of work in PvE to unlock shiny new stuff, and those of us (like me) who don't care much for PvE now have a greater ability to unlock stuff we need for PvP without having to spend hours a day grinding Random Arena while all our guildmates are offline or otherwise occupied. I think ArenaNet's made a good call here and I look forward to reaping the new rewards of the faction boost in GvG tonight...even if iQ will still eat us for breakfast in Tombs. Mistriss Of Darkness
Although I empathize with those who like to make attribute changes outside towns (such as runners often do), I think overall it is a good tradeoff by not having annoying refund points.
This lets me experiment with my character and not worry about having a build that doesn't work well then trying to limp along for a few outings to gain some refund points and re-adjust my attribute points. I think this will encourage other players to try out different buildouts with their current characters and overall a good idea. PAC
I think most changes are awesome and applaud ANet! However, please put in a high-level henchmen lineup in the low-level areas related to the Glint quests (as you should do in UW/FoW also!). It feels a bit hopeless to take on lvl28 with lvl4s...

I don't care what anybody says. Surrow's Furnace missionsare are better the real game.

Go to a crystal desert outpost, change second profession, get all points back free of charge, add to new profession, it's not that hard. Anets main goal with this patch was to slow down the rate at which people gained wealth, and they seem to have done a good job of it. I guess they know what they're doing. Amused Observer

I can confirm it. I think the ability to change attributes outside town was a form of ingame cheating. If the skill bar cannot be changed, why should attributes be treated differently? Also, some soloers took advantage of it and adjusted during their farm runs. Since AN doesn't seem to like farmers much (preference for full teams), it makes sense to make things as tough as possible for soloers.

From a player's POV, this is a great modification. However, from an RPG POV, it doesn't really make sense. There should be some cost to re-building your character. In real life, you don't spend a significant amount of time learning a profession and then up and change careers without some cost (e.g., starting from the bottom and having to earn your way up again). Again, from a player's POV this is a great change because you no longer have to build up the refund bank anymore I think AN is encouraging players to experiment with different builds. And deleting the refund points component will remove the impediment for experimenting. Amused Observer

Well, because of that I spent all my 12 skill points in SoCs. They used to cost much less than normal trainer skills.

Loved a bunch of things about the update, especially the Titans Quests (which were both fun and frustrating, but also fun because they *were* frustrating). Definitely some of, if not, the most challenging quests in the game.
My only quibble is that you can't retake those quests over and over, like you can with the one from Shadow at Ember Light. At only five, the Titan Quests are over far too quickly preciesely because they were so enjoyable. Maybe the exp rewards could be toned down or gotten rid of altogether on repetition (the 50k exp for The Titan Source was just outrageous), but at least you'd have the option to do them again for the fun of it!
As for high-level henchies in the respective areas... nah. Aside from Droknar's (which I did with all henchmen) and maybe Ascalon (the easiest one thereafter), I doubt they'd measure up where skilled humans failed. But I guess there's nothing wrong with trying
It was hard enough trying to find a monk for The Titan Source anyway (ended up inviting a friend who didn't have the quest) since there seem to be so few people with the quest.

If I want to PvP or GvG I can switch from hammer to sword, to ax, or whatever, then switch right back and continue to PvE. Nothing like getting stuck half way with half points in hammer, and half in swords, and you can't fully use the weapon because you ran out of att point refunds!
I can now choose whatever set-up I want for the mission, quest, PvP, and GvG, without worrying about how many points I have... or don't have.
Yes, I understand that on-the-fly changes were cool, but given the choice between the two ways, I do perfer the way Anet did it in this update.
I love this update, though I too would like to be able to toggle capes, and have two more character slots, and add sparring between guild mates in the guildhall. Also, I would love 10, instead of 8 skill slots, lol

why not be useful and make ele not suck in pve? or make monk not the most essential overpowered single class in the game? Green items were actually meant to make the elitists equal to players who don't bother spending hours farming for items. You'll be right if green items start selling for hundreds of thousands of gold, but at the moment, keep your *****ing to a minimum, please.
Ele's are the best for clearing large mobs in pve, and monks are necessities, but overpowered? Since smiting as farming has been considerably dented, single-minded monks without the specific builds can't even hold their own in higher level maps.
As for your other complains, they seem like cheap filler. I'm sure you're ever the ardent one about not spamming, but no one likes starchy hot dogs.

I'm gonna be blatently honest, I think that upgrade RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOed the game up. I mean the whole key thing and going to a chess and it guarentees a rare weapon....well thats just gay. And then having to pay 100g to invite someone into guild, I mean I have plenty of money but what about those that don't. But I dont like the update all over.
Yamat
If your guild cant afford 100g to invite someone, well shame on you. The 100g cost is a step towards stopping the huge amount of unrequested guild invites that non-guild members receive.
I play both PvE and PvP and in my opinion this was a HUGE step in the right direction of what the game has always promised.

Ok I went a little far on that last post that I was complaining about and I'm sorry. I easily have the money to invite someone into guild if I need to. The key thing is what gets to me. I like the randomness of not knowing if your going to be lucky or not, but here you get a purple or gold all the time when you use a key. And for the green weapons people are saying how they get them everytime they kill a boss, I have gone out killing bosses, ive killed everything out side of warcamp place in mines part and I had to buy a green to get one. Do they drop often or not? Also the economy kinda sucks no one wants to buy golds or purples all they want is green, I had all max dmg and gold and stuff and this green just totally screwed me over lol.

sorry to those of you complaining about the attribute thing, but you couldnt change you skills mid mission, so whats the big deal?
One the note about the chests - I haven't bought a key yet, i have had at least three keys drop for me. first 2 keys were in the shiverpeakes yielded me a pretty nice max dmg gold bow with mods and a sup rune of marksmanship
third key was a miners key and I used it in SF - guess what i got!?!?!?!
are you ready?
A max dmg purple bow with, get this -------- NO MODS!!!!!!!!!!!!
thank god i didnt buy that key and waste 1.5k

ps - i love this update despite my bad experience with the one key...

even normal invites to guilds cost 100g yes. I like the refund points all the time. if ur going to make a char for something then do it. and if u need to change to a runner its nice that u dont have to build up refund points thats wat ur skills are equipped for are the attributes u have them into. its not a nerf in my opinion. if ur gonna complain about it dont play.
Shadow Cloud
Firstly... I'd like to comment on the guild member payment for recruiting. Yes... I can understand what reasons for why they did it, to minimize the spaming of "who wants to join my guild", but honestly I'm still seeing the same amount of spaming for that, so it's obvious the idea sucks. Tack on the fact that 20-50% of your guild is bound to disappear off the face of the planet when each suddenly is drawn to another game. So suddenly you're wasting money by even having a guild period. So ultimately this 100 gold fee to invite a member/guest is rather ridiculous.
Next topic... I don't know whether they nerfed the Footprint/SF areas of items or if it's just because they are so heavily farmed, but Anet said these areas would offer high quality/unique items to players who wanted them. In my recent experience with a full group of real players/henchies or a group of 5 players/henchies... the drops have significantly sucked to put it bluntly. 1/4 of the spawns don't drop anything anymore. The rest aren't even dropping high end normal items. Seeing lots of blues and normal... nothing max. I've gone so far as to even get a 10-17 sword dropped. A 10-17 sword!? Come on! You can get something like that right out of Post searing Ascalon for heaven sakes!
Now the chest issue? Eh... personally the idea behind them are great. BUT... I don't see the value in buying a 600 gold key for a purple item that's only going to sell to a player at a max of maybe 300. I'm losing money that way.
Shiverpeak chests appear nicely spread out. Can usually find about 5-6 within the entire massive area. SF however sucks big time. In the 20 times I've been there now I've been lucky to comes across one or two chests and that's maybe 4 of the 20 times I went into the place. They seriously need to up the chest count in that area and just as importantly... increase the over all value of the item inside or decrease the cost of the keys significantly to match the average lowest valued item dropped from them.
Green items? This started out REALLY well and admittedly perhaps dropped FAR too often. Could make 1 run and nab a green from just about every boss. But now... you can make a run 15 times and be lucky to get 1 green for someone in the party. Those odds are out right pathetic.
As for the person who complained about Elementalists sucking.... well... they're not meant to be tanks firstly. They rock if they can hang back untouched. They nuke the heck out of everything then. Monks... I think was wise to nerf them a little bit though i think some skills they were a little too harsh on the nerfing.
Anyway... that's all i got to say.

I think you got that absolutely spot on. In particular the comments regarding the lack of decent weapon drops (in particular GREEN) in Grenth's Footprint & Sorrow's Furnace. How about a new area in the next update - Sod's Law. In GF and SF I must have killed a good 40-50 bosses with mixed groups (all henchies/all players/some of each) and have seen few green item drops... only one of them mine.

Bit newbish but where is Sorrow's Furnace?
Shadowdaemon
go north from camp rankor and you will see a map called grenths footprint, from there make a stop at deldrimor warcamp(cause its a town) then go back into grenths and you can get to sorrows from there
