New chest farming method [MERGED]
DegreeZ
Way too many uber items floating around now...
MSecorsky
How to generate money? I don't know if anyone pays attention... but the trip to the War camp and the Priest quest alone netted me two plat in gold just from gold drops! Them the sale of white items, at better than 50g for most of them...
Just go kill things! You'll make gold.
As for uber-items... it's not a game about items. Don't sweat it.
Give some ubers to a newb in Ascalon and feel good about it.

um, the new areas have TONS of mobs to kill. kill them, get money. its not simple, its not a 3 minute run, but it works. out of a multiple mob run of probably about 20-30 "monsters" even with an 8 player group i can see getting 1-1.5k as no problem.
*edit*
msecorsky beat me to it, damn he is smart!

I jogged through the desert this morning with an avatar I'm levelling, and killed perhaps 100+ mobs. I'd say I found less than a plat of gold - gold drop rate must be down a LOT. At the same time I spent 4500 gold on keys to open chests, which gave me ten gold & purple items worth less than two plat combined.
All in all, my little jog _set me back_ about 1500 gold and didnt give me a single unlock or sellable upgrade item.
That had me worried. I have 100+ plat, but at that rate I'd soon be killing charr for raw materials to make money.
tanwarv
Numa, it's also easy to make money by just expert salvaging everything. I do those same type of farming runs in the desert (and the Trolls around Draks), and I average 50g per mob from either the gold drop or the materials. 250 wood is worth 2.5 plat on the Draknor player market, same with iron. Steel is worth 150 each. If you have a build that is capable of farming, 5k-15k per hour is easily attainable.
salja Wachi
go ahead farm till your hearts content :0 there will be no buyers for your tiems since everyone can now get them just as easily.
that was the whole point.
this will stabilize the economy.

well i got a max armor skeleton shield last night with only 8 req strength.
an awesome item.
it is just the luck of the draw man
Numa Pompilius
tanwarv: yeah, I suppose. I just have to readjust to that the items I find are worth less than the wood they're made of - and learn to ignore those chests, that's the real money sink. That's hard; years of rpg'ing has me itching to open every chest I find.
noblepaladin
One griffon run should net you enough gold to unlock 3 or 4 chests. Combined with the purple and/or gold items you get from that run, it's pretty good for getting gold items and runes. So farming is definitely a possibility for unlocks, etc. I think this is a good decision by ANET because solo fans can still solo while people who team will also get good rewards too.

I love the idea of the keys and chests, it adds a really fun new element to the game. One thing I don't like so much however, is the sheer abundance of these chests - my storage is already starting to clog up with pretty good weapons and I can only assume everyone else's is too.
This does take a chunk out of farming, and spreads the wealth somewhat, as well as acts as a superb gold sink, but I really wish it was a bit more special to find a chest, rather than coming across them every 10 minutes or so.

I've popped about 8 shiver chests and 4 miner chests. First two runs I got lucky - sup absorb rune and sup smite rune. I got hooked and kept going. I got about 50% gold and purple. Most of the time, obviously, it doesn't produce enough gold to replace the key cost. However, even in an 8 player party, I was making enough gold from mobs (just travelling through SF) to keep up my habit (about 1 plat every 20 minutes it seemed - this may not seem alot, but ur questing at the same time, and the exp is nice). Everyone loves popping chests, and it seems like the best way to do it is by actually playing the game.

The reason behind it was simple... to improve drops for people playing...
How many times have you opened a chest in the past with henchmen or a party and get absolutely nothing? I know I have many times... This way, if you got a key and you use it. you will be guaranteed SOMETHING for it. Wither with henchmen, solo, or in a large party. This removes some of the appeal for Solo build chest farmers. Thus less nerfing in the future.
The bosses in the update dropping new Green weapons that have extra buffs on them, is nice as well... They are what they are. no manipulation or salvaging them. one of the best of these are the triple buff wands... so your focus can be used and have up to 5 or 6 buffs going with % chance. That is really nice...
ingy...
PS: watch for key drops in the future from creatures in the area... It was something many were talking about among the dev team...

I found and unlocked a superior protection and superior healing rune.
the merchant payed all my keys with that.
Edit: serveral superior runes added to the Spree. Seems to be unusual, maybe its the result of the fact that I unlocked every single weapon upgrade and "only" half of all runes. I barely get ANY green weapon (its way below the 1/32 mark) and a shitload of runes from dead bosses, too.

Farming chests is kinda pointless now, isnt it? Gold items are pretty much useless now with these green weapons...

actually gold weapons still have superior runes in them. so if you have not unlocked all runes or mods they are still worth a lot to the person that finds them

A potential problem I see here though is what happens when more than one of your party members has keys and you are all running for the same chest? Kind of silly when you end up fighting over who gets the chest or it turns into a race to get to a chest right in the middle of a battle just because someone doesn't want to risk losing the chest to someone else. |

Yes, and I think that's a wonderful idea. Anet sure knows how to get it right.

I went on a spree and spent about 15k on shiverpeak keys, and just ran outside and tanked to open the chest again and again.
It was, I guess, about 25 keys total.
I'm a w/mo. Almost every single drop was a staff, offhand item or dwarf armor with a rune in it.
Out of 25 keys I got 2 weapons: a worthless max dmg gladius and a worthless max damage summit hammer. I weild axe.
About 80% of the runes i got were for warrior and monk.
The chest is dropping runes for your class and items for not your class, it seems to me.
I got a few gold fire staffs with lines of stats, but nothing great, and I got many 'gold' items with garbage stats like a max dmg water staff with 19% chance to improve blood magic or some such nonsense.
Fun but pointless.
It sucks that gold items are now inferior. And I think the green should be platinum colored to reflect their value.

OK, after a couple of hours more playing I'm now sure: GOLD IS GOING TO BECOME AN ISSUE!
Despite the whining at this site, it has never been hard to make money before. Anyone could easily raise serious cash by doing e.g. Gates of Kryta mission a couple of time. And despite claims by people wanting to protect their farm-site, drop rates there were never nerfed.
Well, I've got a Mesmer I'm levelling, and after she got to Draknor and bought armor and one key she had exactly 86 gold.
So I thought, let's kill some grawl for fun & profit outside Port Sledge. Yes she brought two henches, but I always have before, and the run has previously always yielded at least a couple of nice objects, a few runes, and a plat or two in gold EVERY TIME I've done it.
Well, not now.
After I'd killed the grawl army and all the azure shadows, opened one chest, picked up every drop no matter how pointless, and sold all the loot at the merchant, my mesmer had a grand total of 546 gold.
Meaning I **lost** 140 gold (due to the cost of one key) on the trip. If I hadn't opened that one chest, killing everything in the area and collecting all the loot would have given me an income of **360 gold**. For better than one hour of constant killing, in a high(ish) level area.
As I've said, I have over 100 plat, meaning I can put at least this mesmer through school, but the pile is going to be shrinking from now on.
Clearly ANet feels it is necessary to soak up excess gold from the economy. This is, IMO, a very dangerous strategy on their part.

here's what you do: dont buy keys, dont buy scrolls, dont buy all your skills, dont craft the new weapons at the weaponsmiths, dont buy green items unless you plan to use it forever. Those are money sinks and participating in that will drain your funds.

For those that do not have any useful purposes to their pile of gold, i think buying keys and being GUARANTEED something which could be fantastic is the way to go.
Surplus gold in exchange for fun.
Numa Pompilius
I agree about not buying keys & scrolls and only using collectors gear, but there's no way around the cost of skills, as buying them is as expensive as capturing them.
I've not done the math, but I'm guessing it'll cost you better than 100 plat to pick up all skills for one avatar. In the old days that wouldn't have been a problem, but money is going to be very tight now.
I don't really know what it'll mean to the economy when there's tons of high-quality items around, but noone has any money to buy them with. Prices should collapse, but prices had already collapsed long before this update.
As usual I suppose the winners are those who've been around since release, or preferrably since before release, and are already rich.
Then again maybe there are new money making schemes which've opened now that it no longer really pays to kill monsters. I've got this sneaking suspicion that whatever it is, it'll probably have something to do with participating in PvP.

Well, I have 1 mil in the bank +what my characters are carying and I dont intend to participate in that. Why throw away my hard-earned cash? (also just to give hope to others - I do not have nor have I ever had a character with Monk primary or secondary, and my warrior is only level 14)
I know others will think like you do and play into the gold sink. That doesn't bother me...do what makes you happy. But because you do that the value of everyone else's gold rises as gold leaves the market. Gold is valued at an all time low right now...it is not the time to buy (unless you want to try to pick up rubies and sapphires real cheap, lol)

Hmm the rune prices will fall further (where possible) as armors drop from teh chests, i got a sup vigor in my first and poof there was 29k ...but this will even out so selling rare runes will not be very viable, what is fun is the gamble with a security feeeling, u always get sth in a nice colour but its not worth it most of the time ... as many of u stated ... the economy will change again ... but can we actually suspect a crash?
One and Two
yeah the economy will be truly f*cked for a while...but that was expected, was it not?

I got sup vigor wed night while helping a guildmate thru hell. 600g got me 30k....no complaints here.

I went and opened about 300 chests in the shiverpeaks today (I was bored). The cost of the keys was 180k, just for the keys. I got 2 Superior Vigors (which I merched to save time) bringing my losses to 120k. Unlocking of staffs netted me a +18 and +20 fire wrap, and a +5 insightful. Net loss: 35k (people were falling over themselves for the wraps). Random sells of swords got me another 10k (net loss: 25k). I got 4 gold max req10 Summit Axes also. 3 were dmg modless, so i merched them for almost no profit. The other one, I got a bid of 75k, but I am not sure I'm going to sell. Even with this stuff alone, I was at a +50k margin. Not bad for doing NOTHING AT ALL, except running in and out of zones.
Please stop complaining about this. I would rather pay a bit for the excitement of having a gold that could be just what I need than get a crappy 5-21 req 12 axe.

the new update also comes with better monsters un UW, so those few UW solo builds that still work are now totally nerfed. but how long will it be before someone figures out a way to solo/run SF? this update will definately have large impacts on the game's economy, but for better or for worse?
IlikeGW
I think chest running alone is kind of pointless. Everyone in your group can use the chest, so you can as easily tackle mobs and bosses and get even more stuff. Your also wasting more money without pickups/potential green items on the side as you need something to offset the potetial for purple drops worth way less than a key

This game doesn't really need/require you to have alot of cash. Once you get your main PvE chars with armour and weapons your pretty much set. There is really no use for gold. So the fact that it is being spunged isn't much of a problem... perhaps give back some value to gold? Also it is still easy to farm money, try material farming for one. Or simply go with a group and kick some butt in SF... I did the latter and netted a good 5k before we died.
Perhaps what needs to be done is an increase in the overall drop of gold (money) from mobs. If raised by the right amount it will create an aequilibrium between gold sink and gold income.

Eh...two chests I opened today have very nice items. I got a max damage Falchion, with +15% damage while in a stance, lengthened bleeding, and enchantments last +17% longer. I also got a max damage fiery longbow, with +17% damage with health < 50%, and health +27. So far, I'm pleased with the chests
