I wish people would stop using this termanology. You ALWAYS get something that you can sell back for atleast 300-600 gold in Lion's Arch. And even the things you can have trouble selling can be sold back to the trader for 200-300 gold.

I have made over 70k on chests. The only people who could possibly compare these chests to slot machines are those who compulsively buy 10+ keys and then sell everything that they didn't think was magnificent back to the trader.

These people were probably already idiotic "BIG MONEY BIG MONEY IM GONNA WIN!" addicts to fortune in the first place and it's no suprise that they waste their "life savings" on something equally as trivial in fiction, too.

When I first opened a chest I had 6k gold. By the end of the night I had 70+k. It wasn't luck that got me 64k: It was my ability to buy a key for 600 gold, open a chest, find a Gold Max Damage Weapon (Which Gold weapons and armor are the ONLY things that drop from chests in the Southern Shiverpeaks) or a Superior Vigor/Monk/Ele Rune and eithe sell that weapon back for 600 gold to buy a new key or sell that rune for 6-40k.

That's how you make money. You charge a cheap price for high end items. You got it basically for free, you give it away basically for free.

This is going to sound very blunt, but those who are too dumb to know how to keep some of their money stashed away, to not be fussy about sell-back prices and ABOVE ALL ELSE realise that money isn't very important at all in this game shouldn't and DO NOT need it.

If you managed to get all gold drops for you, then you're one heck of a lucky person. My last 4 Shiverpeak chests were all purples, and quite frankly, I've yet to see anyone willing to buy a purple for any price above merchant value. So no, golds are not the only things that drop from chests in Southern Shiverpeaks.

It still boils down to the same thing no matter what - if you're lucky, like Sagius, even if you don't do anything, you'll get wealthy. If you're a normal person, or even say unlucky like me, this is simply a loss-making venture no matter how you look at it.

I love to go hunting around for chest bc i always get a gold and purple items mostly gold and i turn around a sell them for at least 1k ive made a killing with keys

I buy shiverpeak keys and farm around grenths (section near SF) it has the best stuff and the stone summit drop keys pretty often for me at least

maybe im just lucky but im not stopping with my chest hunting its fun passes time and i make tons of money and find good weapons.

Also it gives me something else to do while farming bosses near there for green items

If anyone is interested in some green gold and purple items my guild wars name is Keegan The McGarity and i usually have a green or gold just whisper me and ill see what ive got to sell

I tried to search for this topic but found nothing...and I know I cant be the only one who has noticed this.

I just wanted to ask if anyone else has noticed the following inside sorrows...

If 1st person gets a purple from chest then you all do

If 1st gets a gold from chest you all do

I dont open a chest if the first person gets purple, I just wait for a gold.

This has worked for me many times and although the drops are random I ALWAYS get gold once the first person does, and I ALWAYS get purple if the first person does. Ive been doing this for weeks now and it never fails and Ive been giving away gold items to my guild frequently.

Now I know some ppl are going to start with the 'its a random drop you idiot' but try it first then let me know Im right.

Try it before posting and telling me Im wrong like some ppl in the game.... just open the chest see if you all get the same colour all the time then make your own mind up.

Yes, it's like Battle Torn says. For anyone who says opposite, try doing Orozar for weeks. That teaches you a lot of stuff you didn't know before.

First off if your going to do chest hunting I suggest you do it in sorrows furnace. Within one day I got 2 req 8 gold chaos axes and a req 9. I sold the req 8's un'id for 90K each and the req 9 for 70K.

Shiverpeak chests tend to drop a lot of purples and you end up throwing your money away. If you do decided to do it I suggest doing in the port sledge area and doing it.

Keys drop like dyes for me. If they where only available as drops I wouldn't get anything! T_T Up to date since SF patch (3 key drops 1 ascalonian, 1 Krytan and 1 Phantom).

They don't drop often enough!

I have gotten golds once others have gotten puple and I have gotten purples after others have gotten gold, however, it does usually work like Battle Torn and others have stated.

I usually see it that 6/8 of the people in the group get a purple, and 2 get golds, but lately its been more 50/50...so I actually buy keys more now because they seemed to have increased the chance of getting rares from them...though I did waste 6k on keys and got absolutely nothing good with all of them...mostly rares, but horrible mods...

Actually if one person get a purple then everyone that opens that chet will get a purple. If the first person gets a gold then everyone will get a gold.

If this is something new then say so, because I have NEVER in my entire playing seen this with the new key chests. NEVER EVER. I know they upped rares in that one patch, but nope...still never seen this. I'm just posting what I've seen, you can't argue with me that I didn't see it...

Granted, I have not played with anyone in game, but henchmen for the past week, so if something was changed recently I probably wouldn't know...

Anways, looked at the patch notes...

Update - Thursday, September 22

Fixed problems with random positioning of locked chests.

Improved distribution of rare items in locked chests so that most players will get more rare items.

I guess that could have done it, but I have played with groups since then and have not noticed what you are describing, and typically with groups, we make a big spectacle out of opening the chests, you can also read what they pick up, and no...not once have I been in a group and the whole group got either rares or purples. I have noticed more people getting rares from chests since the first introduction of chests, but not in the way you are saying.

I must admit from experience last night that first item from the chest is usually the colour from that chest i.e. purple means mostly purple and gold means mostly gold items as my group last night got 6 gold items form i chest outside augry rock

the reason the keys are so high is cause just like everything else. NO ONE is selling them back to NPCs. And because the chests are getting farmed to DEATH the drop quality is falling... Sooner or later people will STOP that and it will balance out again. 90% of the chests in shiver peeks are farmed out for most players. only dropping purple items at best... luckily I don't farm much so I still get a good drop on occasion,

We still see a gold drop on occasion in magmua too. go figure...

Keys will come down when people start selling them back to NPCs, just like Dyes and Runes do. Same with Superior Salvage and ID kits. right now they are too high for value. its cheaper to get Expert kits for same number of uses... just uses more slots is all... I personally think the kits should be fixed prices. not market driven... but that's me... kits are different from keys... they are generally not abused. they are used and NEVER sold back, and I don't think I have ever seen one drop anywhere.... so that didn't make a lot of since to me... Keys do drop though thus market commodity.

Remember the Keys were made to force a penalty for people doing chest farming. This was to discourage this kind of behavior. and ensure a drop for those willing to get a key for the area. (that was the other complaint, chests that didn't drop anything for people in a group)

Also remember the definition of RARE??? that means not everyone has one right? sheesh... If they made it easy to get, it wouldn't be RARE would it?

Wait till you see the RED UNIQUE class they are looking into. That means 1 per account, never to be found again by that player. period!!! Its a lot like a PvP item, in that it will not even go into a trade window. so its not sellable either.

This is just wrong. Items that appear on a merchant's "buy" screen have values fixed in game, and don't fluctuate. You'll never get a slavage kit, a rune of holding or an ID kit any cheaper, no matter what happens economically. Same with keys; they are a fixed price item.

A few things, I'm not discounting what people are saying they're seeing but rather stating fact from my own experience:
1. Group of 8 going thru Fire Island missions, one person opens chest and gets a purple..........ALL remaining 7 party members as well get PURPLE.
2. No possible way someone uses 6 keys, gets 6 purple items be them armour or weapons and only gets a return of 155g(ooops just reread that post...he said 155K , unless they're all armours - minor runes that the player then salvages and sells to trader for 25g each!! Why do that when selling the armour with rune id'd for 100+ gold every time??

I too have spent plenty of money on keys in the hopes of getting a nice drop, primarily a gold armour for a Sup Vig type loot and the balance of what you spend versus what you may reap....WAY off.
Ex: In this case I'm using the merchants pricing as comparison rather than what I may be able to get from another player because that's purely speculative.
So I get a gold fire wand, max dmg which after being ID'd only has +5 nrg while health is +50%. Next I get a gold Mursaat hammer, mx dmg, dmg+15% while health is +50%, and health +28. The hammer is still mod-able one time as is or to replace the mods it has.
Merchant price on the Wand is 468g
Merchat price on Hammer 280g

Don't know bout anyone else out there, but from in-game experience with selling/buying that Hammer with the stats it has and the ability to upgrade the health to perfect AND add another mod on top of what it's base is....would make this weapon easily 10x more valuable than an un-modifiable wand<---regardless of the +5 nrg.

Ok, so I finally went out and tested this with a group. I see what you mean, but I don't understand why its not in any patch notes or why they haven't said anything about it at all.

So...I guess I'm not going to be the first to open a chest anymore, so that I can see whether I'll get a horrible purple or a decent gold...

well, this was the solution to the bot-chest-famer-people. chest botters, whatever.

at least, i think so.

also, it probably was meant to stop the section of the fanbase that spends their time whining that they don't get the "uber-pwnage" weapons that they seem to see all around them. except...it didn't. just look at this thread....

i like this new system, even though i haven't seen a shiverpeak chest in the longest time. seems that they've dissapeared from grenth's footprint.....

Im glad I noticed something that helps anyone (not opening first to ensure gold) and as I said I dont claim to be the first to have noticed, but I have changed some peoples minds reading this post and thats what posting was intended to do. I never open chests first now and that means I get more gold items than ever before and makes farming worthwhile. I dont know why the update didnt mention this but there you go.

cant wait to see the red items wonder what they will be like and that will encourage more people to use more characters in the game that can only add to experience and respect for other classes.

As already posted this is junk... IMHO

I started a little tank a week or two back and am currently working on ascension with her. 2 other buddies did the same with new char's as well - Ele and a R.

In the last 2 weeks we have probably opened a number of chests and picked up 75% gold items with either close to near perfect mods or Perfect mods! A number of very Very nice sundering and Vampiric bows last night even while doing the Villany run, and after a few runs in the jungle with at least 5 chests of all goldies between the wilds and bloodstone.

The keys were annoying at first and I too have run into what ~Sent said earlier - I never go without a key because I could be looking at my next perfect Barbed Sephis Axe of Warding (mine currently is 2pts off perfect dmg 6-26) , or a number of other items that I have gotten on drops.

Currently I need to get my little tank into the furnace and the islands becuz my Magmus shield is nice but getting a dual -X while stance or hex or something would be nice (my little Magmus shield is great with the 2 mods its got).

Key are good... and yes they may be a gold sink but its nice to add a little gamble in every once in a while that doesn't mean going blow for blow 1 on 1 with a boss or something while soloing... less chance of a DP if you actually come down to synchronizing your skill usage... (though I am learning more and more about soloing every day

Anyhow thats my bit!

What chest? Key chest placement is random and doesn't always give the same quality of drops. You could end up blowing a 1.5k key on a chest that gives you a bad purple shadow staff.

I dont know. the FoW chests seem to be pretty good. My first experience with those chests cuz i prefer UW but starting to like FoW for the chests. Lots of the members of my group had keys. I didnt but 1 cuz for 1.5k yeah rite. They opened it and all got golds. Choas axe i know was 1. others and others. And then a key drops for me. So i run back and open it. Sure enough a gold max hammer with some upgrades that i cant remember. Ill have to try those chests again.

It may be worth trying a running build to hunt down some chests in FOW or UW. I know its possible but it will then be down to luck if you get purple or gold and you could die real quick if not careful but its better than standing around shouting for a party when Europe has favour mind you

It can be worth buying one. And I did only see golds released from FoW chests when I last went in. Then again, there is a chance you'll get something rubbish like a deadly cesta or Healing Ankh (with "when hexed" bonuses). If you get a key drop in FoW, that's good. But I would never advise buying more than one key, unless someone's selling them really cheap in ToA.

Everything earlier than shiverpeaks is pretty much a waste. Sometimes you get elonian key drops from griffon farming, and after a while of getting crap I started just selling those keys back. The only keys I would actively buy would be for UW of FoW, since you have a pretty high chance of getting something that you will like/something that is sellable for decent cash. Whenever I go to either I usually stock up about 2-3 keys.

I've had keys drop like galore, but it still doesn't justify what I get out the chests, the best I've ever netted was a major vigor rune. I say if they drop, just sell to em to PC's under the price it takes to buy em, and you got a legit business, none of this "Poke and see" chance unlocking chests.

My 2 Cents.

Grrr... the chests in FoW and UW do pretty well by me, but if you want to talk about a gold sink, what the eff's up with the superior salvage kit? I gad a +30HP mod on a shadow bow (BLEH) out of a gold chest in FoW, so I thought to be sure to get the upgrade I'd use a superior salvage...

Wood planks. I used that superior salvage on a bunch of gold and purple items -- with decent mods, too -- and got wood planks for every single one. Tried it with the expert kit and kept getting upgrades.

USELESS, I say.

I abhor that statement! I absolutely adore my superior kit, it's never failed me once, and always gives me the highest returns possible!

With everything, salvaging is still a % chance you'll get what you're after. Get ready to get hit with wood planks or ingots when you go to salvage that bow or sword, it's all probability my friend.

I <3 My Sup Salv kit, made 4 plat <negating the 2 spent on it> for a profit of 2 plat and extra materials I used for my own armor on alts.

Imho, Sup Kits rock, and I don't gotta worry bout replacing em for a bit, unless you're a salvag-a-holic, or an Ident-a-freak.
