The (or at least one) Answer to Fur Squares
Pevil Lihatuh
Edited to match new patch changes
Ok seen tons of threads asking how to get them. Here is one way. If you discover another, please post here.
Once you can get an Expert Salvage kit, buy one (400 gold). These seem to first be available from Yaks Bend. Then use the expert kit on Charr Hides. Out of 8 hides I got one fur square and 7 tanned hides, so you WILL need to try quite a lot to get enough fur. They can come from anything that gives tanned hides normally
Since the patch you can now talk to a trader in post-searing Ascalon city, named Calissa Sedgewick. She will trade you 1 fur square in exchange for 4 charr hides.
Edit by Ashleigh McMahon:
From now on, all new threads with fur-related questions will be locked, as we have had alot of them within the past few weeks, and they are filling the boards up.
Regards, Ashleigh.

We need to confirm if an expert kit is necessary. People have told me that you should only use expert kits on purple/blue colored items.
adam.skinner
I salvaged a "salvage item" and received a rare in return, and that only happens with expert kits. So yes, it's not only special items. gwonline has a listing from beta of what gives what.
Flam
I used a normal salvage kit but i forgot on what and got a rare crafting item... I would check what the item was but the game keeps on crashing now
PhineasToke
An absolute recipe from SOMEONE at ArenaNet who knows should be posted here. Speculation and guessing is just frustrating all of us who need it to upgrade armor.

Seeing as almost all of a ranger's armor requires fur squares, there has to be an easier and more reliable way to get them

Thats true you can get rare crafting items somtimes when using the exert salvage kit.
I only use the ordinary one when i'm farming cloth or iron ingnots.

just a quick update: apparently its anything that would usually give tanned hides that has a small chance to give fur when expertly salvaged. I myself haven't confirmed this yet, but it would make sense.
sumasage
let me ask this since we on the expert kit topic, only chances to getting rare item right? not all the time? i was trying to get some steel but all i gets is just iron.
Olfin Bedwere
Got 1 Fur Suare using an Expert Salvage kit from a Char Hide. I salvaged several hides till I got it.
@sumasage - You are correct.

yes it is very expensive trying to get fur squares i had 17 charr hides and out of all that just got 1 fur squares....they need to make this a bit more available i mean the usefullness doesn't match the lack of it in the game....its soo expensive to comeby and the armor u need to use it on isn't worth the trouble...so my advice stick to the other armors your better off with it
Teamtaiwan
uh....24 charr hides....zero fur ><
Talk about bad luck ; ;

I agree completely. The scales you need for the Drakescale armor are much more plentiful and the onlyu difference I see is that of cold VS fire damage protection. As for the expert salvage kits, I haven't found a single difference between that and the standard kit in what you can get from the salvaging.

lol guess i got lucky :P i've also managed to get steel from a sword instead of iron by using the expert kit, but as i went for the druid armour at lions arch right now im using my expert kit only to get runes and upgrades from things. If i get a bit more money though I think I'll buy 3 or 4 kits and make a note of what i can salvage from everything with the expert one.

Re-stickied - everyone still asking

I got a fur square from an expert salvage kit on a Muggamu hide, or whatever Muggamus drop as a salvage item.
Flattus
i got a steel ingot from a regular sword using expert kit. sometimes i get 2-4 common items but doesn't happen frequently enough to compensate for the 400 price tag
thejynxed
The price vs result ratios need tweaked. It's already rediculous enough seeing crafting materials sell for more than the final object is worth after it is crafted. I've paid far less for rares than I've ever paid for crafting materials. There is something wrong with that picture.
Lord Malikai
I got furs from the following so far
Charr Hide
Minotaur Hide
Muggamo Hide (not sure on spelling, the centaur guys)
So, I am assuming you can get furs from any type of Hide, just very rarely does it actually work.

The really unfortunate thing about fur being so rare, is the items you can make with it do NOT justify the difficulty in the slightest. In the end, the only real difference is, you look slightly more unique, since most players are having a hard time finding that fur.
Cymmina
You can get silk 100% of the time with an expert salvage kit on maguuma spider silk. Well, maybe not 100%, but I got it 4 out of 4 tries. Normal salvage kits just yield glittering dust.
mtxed
first two tan hide squares gave me two furs, then the next 20 gave me nothing.. sold one fur for 1000 so i guess it balances out plus i made some $.. not like i need the fur anyways, just like the rest of the rare items, dont need them, just sell em for gold.. not even sure i need gold either, got like 5k profits just from selling but i havent spent a penny yet!
madsoul
i got 3 fur from 13 hides using expert kit...boy i feel lucky
Iderius
I'm pretty sure i came across a wandering material trader somewhere in the icy region following Yak's Bend. Of course it would b difficult to point out exactly where for obvious reasons, but jus try straying off course a little. He has steel and fur squares. Venture off at own risk though, it can get pretty swarmy. good luk.
Crimson_Phoenix
I blew 44 char hides for no fur squares with the expert salvage kit, talk about an expensive waste.

People dont seem to realize how much chance has to do with salvaging. Here's a little chart to act as a guide to your chances with salvaging:
Using Salvage Kit:
.......................Common Salvage Item......Rare Salvage Item
Rare Material.................. Low ........................ Medium
Common Mat. .................High ....................... Medium
(Inc. runes,
weap mod, etc.)
Using Expert Salvage Kit:
.......................Common Salvage Item.......Rare Salvage Item
Rare Material...............Medium ........................High
Common Mat...............Medium ........................ Low
(Inc. runes,
weap mod, etc.)
So those are the basic percentages when it comes to salvaging. It isn't some concrete formula. Logically, Using the Expert salvage kit will give you a better chance of getting good stuff than using the normal salvage kit. A gold item is more likely to give you a good item than purple/blue/white items. If you expert salvage a gold item you will most likely salvage a good item. However, there is still a chance you will get a basic crafting material.
For all of you out there looking for fur, try to maximize your chances for salvaging it. Its certainly possible to use a normal salvage kit on a white chaar hide and get a fur, but it isn't very likely. Use an expert salvage kit on all the different types of hides in the game and you will eventually get all the fur you need! Good Luck and I hope this little visual can help people better understand how crafting works.

I got tanned hide squares by using normal scavange item on the gear from humanoid creatures (for example grawls). So far it is 100%.

Can add that some highly salvagables are worth salvaging (depending on your class). In my case for my W/N I salvaged several staffs and got upgrade components (which I do not use) and steel!
On topic: I expert salvaged around 45 charr hides and got one fur...
For the ppl not understanding the waste of money: I wanted the cool-looking Ascalon helmet...which I have now

You have 44 tanned hides now. You could sell those to another player, at 10gp each, and have enough to buy another kit, with a little left over.
No, it doesn't exactly outweigh the kit-and-a-half that you used, but it's better than nothing!
Rellok
So to clarify, Fur squares are expert salvaged from Charr Hides? Not types of Charr Armor?
Thanks,
Matt

Seems to me I saw an NPC just standin around outside of a town in post searing, can't remember where though. You could turn x amount of common materials into the more exotic materials, like steel and silk, pretty sure fur was listed too. Being an elementalist tho, didn't really care.....
KillersKarma
how much is fur actually worth in gp? and what is it used for? making armor or what... i am so lost in all the things you can do in this game, if anyone wants to post and tell me everything about the game, the story and all the shit you can do... post plzzzzzzzzzzzzz

There is a Materials Crafter who crafts Fur Squares, but he wanders in the Shiverpeak Mountains, and can be difficult to find.
Really the best way is to salvage charr hides.
antny54
yeah this is ridiculous. I need fur for that cool ascalon warrior armor. I want this one since i dont want nething cheaper. I WANT FUR DAMMIT!!!
