Ok, now I believe it now, loot distribution is not always random

Last night I saw something really strange. First a bit of background:
Before the last update my monk took a guildie monk into the UW because she wanted to collect ectos. She didn't attack, but occasionally did a heal party. The loot was pretty much 50/50, she got 2 ectos I got 1.
Last night I did a griffon run and while I was in town someone asked if anyone was hunting griffons so I told him I was. He was a W/Mo so the plan was that he would kill the devourers and I would kill the rest.
Things went ok, but he had to stay just out of aggro range or the griffons would attack him, so typically I would have a bunch of griffons and he would be a bit away fighting devourers and maybe a minotaur or two (not in aggro circle but on the map)
Here is the weird part. He got no drops from the griffons. On one group of 3 griffons, where he got too close and one attacked him he got one item. But over two runs, and me killing 40+ griffons and getting gold/purple/blue/plain items and a bunch of wings he got 50% of the gold and that is it. Not a single item went to him.
I got about 50% of the loot from the minotaurs/devourers that he solo'd.

So, you only get drops from things you fought interseting.

See... I was just going to post something about drop rate... glad I searched
I was playing with a group last night in SF as a heal monk. I didn't get a single drop. Now I never attacked - nor did I bring any group heal spells (another monk had that covered). I played this morning with a Warrior trying to wrap up Thunderhead Keep... and nearly ever drop was for me and all Purple items.
Do you have to cause damage to get a good drop?

The loot system is horrible. In HoH three nights ago after one victory someone in our group got all three sigils and one of the gold items. Over the course of 10 victories he received 11 sigils. Fortunately we did not care as that person was saving up for fissure armor and it was a guild group but the fact that it happened was disturbing. For comparison I got 1 sigil over the 10 victories.

if you are attacked by something
heal someone attacking something
buff someone etc
or do any attack yourself you share item loot
dont interact at all dont share item drops
jdwoody
The monks in both cases got drops even when they didn't attack, in fact when the other guy was solo'ing the devourers and the minotaurs I didn't even heal him either, he completely solo'd them and I got drops I completely solo'd the griffons he didn't get any.
He was a level 20, though I don't know if he was ascended or not or if that would make any difference at all.

There is nothing to see here move along.
The drop system is not flawed, move along or you will be silenced, and your existence denied.

I also think it was stated that if you are in the aggro range of the creature(you dont even have to attack, heal someone etc.) you have a chance to get the drop.

From what i've seen you have to be in aggro range at least once to get xp and drops from the monsters.
Dwiggit
There is a proximity involved with the loot drops, even from chests. I can confirm this from one mission I did through Thunderhead Keep. The party was all in the keep, but there was a LONG wait for the next batch of monsters, perhaps a script bug. Anyway, I decided to go scout the area for monsters and lure back any I see.
So I'm wandering around outside the keep. There are 2 small dwarf camps (villages?), one on either side of the keep. I found that each one contains a chest. When I go to open the first chest, 3 items drop.... all for me!
I decided to try this again on the other camp. This chest unloads five items.... all for me!
Everyone else was out of map range, so apparently I got allocated all the loot!
What I don't know is how far this proximity extends. Maybe someone can do some experimenting to find out exactly how far from a drop you can be and still have it allocated to you. I know its farther than the aggro circle, I've had many drops from monsters and chests that were currently outside my aggro circle.

Also, in order to have a chance at the loot, you have to either deal damage or affect the mob, or heal or affect a player who dealt damage to or affected the mob. And there is a proximity thing, but you have to be somewhat far away.
Plague
In many cases, as I'm on low end dialup, I will time out while my party moves ahead. Having not fought, enchanted or healed... anything actually, not even moved, I will sometimes move ahead after I regain control to find another mob has been slain, and I have loot from them, although I've done nothing.
Now, if you move out of range, loot will not drop. I've tested that much. But simply not interacting with a monster in some way doesn't unguarantee loot.
One thing I do notice is that in my N/E build, when I nuke in GF, I will get the majority of the loot. When I mean the majority, I mean at least 35% of what's dropped, sometimes more. With this build I'm both robbing corpses from the Gnashers and nuking groups of enemies, so you can do the math on that one. However, when I change to hexes, nothing.

Once in rpg session I rolled 4th 20s whis is 1/20*20*20*20 chance. or 16 0000 to 1 - and so far I never managed to do it again.

Yep, I've noticed the same phenomenon where I need to be close to the action in order to share drops.
I wonder if there's a way to use this to our advantage... Perhaps I can take my solo monk build with 7 henchies into SF, fight my way to a boss group that I could feasibly solo, then lead my party to a painful death in another location...

Not always random? I dont think it is at all. Well, it is in part, but slanted heavily. I still think damage dealt / damage saved during battle plays a role to item assignment and sounds like it explains the OPs experience.
Warskull
The loot range is roughly equal to the agro circle. If you somehow get withing agro range and do something the monster should remember that you get loot until it gives up on fighting (if you guys outrun it.)
I learned this solo degening hydras to death with my mesmer. Occasionally one would decide "screw it" and walk away and if I didn't get it roughly back within agro range (it is slightly larger) I wouldn't get loot.

Nope, it may not be totally random but aggro/attack/damage is DEFINATELY not required. A couple of nights ago I was questing Sorrows/G's Foot with a PUG and there was 1 afk (as usual), I'm not sure what else he got, but he did get a purple Max Damage req.7 Half Moon. Being the only ranger in the group I just sat there staring at it and cursing the heavens for a while, but as I did not want to waste the rest of the group's time, I just flipped the birdie and moved on.
Tactical-Dillusions
You can (or could) get drops by being totally inactive, as long as you are in range.
It doesn't matter if you cast heals/buffs/attack or not.
I tried it on many occasions while running my second account through boring missions and also with my brother, who was just spectating the battles with griffons.
For example, a dye dropped for my inactive character while my warrior battled on after the cutscene to head North in Ruins Of Surmia.
This i may add, was before the recent updates and so thing MAY have changed. I will bear it in mind.

Part of the strangeness here is that we were both fighting different groups and I got drops in his group, but he didn't get drops in my group.
I did cast balth aura on him when we first mapped to help with the first devourer, but other than that I didn't cast anything on him at all. I may do some testing tonight to see if he casts a spell on me when we first map if he gets drops after that.

with ignite arrow I get ALOT more drops then kindle arrow, guess why ?
ignite effects all foes that are close.

I think I get more drops when I use healing breeze than heal others

I think you're all insane....it makes 0 sense that you'd get more drops depending on the skills you use. you don't get more drops when you use ignite arrows....

I run a 55 monk. so if you'd like to do some testing I'll come sit around in the desert while you kill griffons =)

Few things to note about the loot system.
1) If you are out of radar range no items will drop for you
2) If you are 'unlucky' and receive less drops you will have a greater chance on getting the next drop
3) If you repeatedly 'farm' the same monsters you will have a chance of a 'nodrop'.
1 & 2 are proven by the following test:
Go to a mission like fort koga where you can afford to be 1 player down for the majority of the mission.
Now have one person stay in the start area until you get to the catapult part, then let that player catch up. For the majority of the mission he got no drops but your partners got all the drops. Now when he catches up to the group you will notice this fact. Nearly every item will drop to HIM until he catches up in loot count (doesnt matter if you pick up an item or not, just if it drops for you).
3) can be proven in riverside by just killing white mantle to killing white mantle then undead then white mantle.
I hope this clears at least part of the drop system.

I love it... i seen a Gold Choas Axe drop to a player who was off adventuring away from our group... Sobbed, smiled then laughed as he'll nevber have it!

Well then explain this one then:
Just yesterday I was in Sorrow's with one Guildie and a party of henchies and he had to go AFK all of a sudden. No problem, but after a while I started getting bored and decided to just forge on without him (yes, I know that's a horrible pun).
He got all the drops. I'm serious -- ALL of them. And he wasn't back for nearly and hour, so there were A LOT of opportunities for that to change. Never did. It got so that when I was opening chests, I was half expecting that loot to be assigned to him as well!
So anyway, this specifically is not true:

Maybe it was just something about yesterday.. full moon?
EDIT: Removed my title -- I really think 'random' is still the best description for the various experiences people have had with the drop system in this game.

Odd, I was showing some friends how I would kill griffons. They would die from the first enemy just outside of Augury. They would get some of the drops from the griffons and such that I killed from screens away.
It was like this before and after the most recent update.

In the old times with chests with no keys if you were the only one near the chest and everyone was far away, the loot was yours if you kill a enemy far from your team the loots yours, everyone should have found this out by now. But they gotta fix the dropping the other day in fow, 4 shards dropped and went to 1 guy and 2 rares dropped in the game and they both went to him a chaos axe and shadow bow then we go to obsidian chest out of 5 of us who had keys, 3 get purples 1 gets a crappy gold cesta and the guy whos been getting loads gets a gold sword. After he gets the majority of this he says bye and quits the game. Its pathetic after i was p'd off from that and we lost i joined another group and the first 3 shards that dropped went to me

Without the ability to view the hard numbers, the closest we as players can determine the drop ratios is REPEATED forays into the same area with the same group, all under the same conditions. The loot drop experiences most are relating here are single experiences, and not enough to realistically determine a true drop ratio.

The experience works like this now, too.
On my PvP account, I use a +200% Experience scroll and go farming with a guildie in Prophet's/Skyward and if I'm not atleast wanding, I get no experience.
I used to be able to just stand around and leech, before the upgrade.

Something wierd happened to me and my guild. We were doin the glint missions but for the entire trip 95% of all the drops went to one person. So strange, almost every single drop went to one person. This happens continuously over many retries and other missions. Don't understand that.
Nisha
I used to think that drops only happened if you were the person who actually killed the creature. After a while I completely discounted that theory. A few runs ago, I got drops while Dead, the rest of my team members were still killing. Although that itself was a very skewed run. I figure that I got 60% of the drops on that run - strange...
Cobalt
I am not sure exactly what allows you to get more drops then others I was just on the Alkar quest as War on a 8 person human team I only got 6 drops which were plain crap.
Thats not even the screwy part this is; we had 3 greens drop from 3 different bosses all to the same person!

I dunno.. I get the best drops when I'm playing healer during missions and don't walk into the aggro range of monsters.

It's possible that your level respective to the others in your group may also affect your drop rate. For the last couple of days, I've been helping some lower level members of my guild (all of whom are about level 17 - 18) through the Maguuma Jungle. I was playing a level 20 Monk, and during a run from Druid's Overlook, through the Sage Lands and through to Majesty's Rest, I got a grand total of 3 drops. Seriously, just 3 drops. Everybody else's average was about 9 to 11.
The next night we did the Wilds mission. Better drop rate this time around, about 10 for the whole mission, but it was on average still only about 2/3 of what the others got.
The night after that we went exploring around in Quarrel Falls. It was a pretty dismal night for all of us, with monsters dropping mainly gold and useless white items, but again, I only ended up with a grand total of 5 drops. Our elementalist lucked out that night with nearly 20 drops! (And she's the lowest level of all of us at level 17)
Has anybody else noticed this happening with their characters? Or is it just coincidence?
