Being a ranger...
I think the ratio of Ranger:Warrior is about 1:5.
Then the ratio of Ranger:Elementalist is 1:10
Point is, hardly anybody likes Rangers.
The other night I was trying to get a group for Thirsty River with my 18 R/Mo. One group lets me join, then 30 seconds later boots me.
This happens 4 more times, until I find a group that accepts me. So we're carving through the first bit of Thirsty River, and we get to the first enemy team.
I'm shouting to focus on one target at a time and then kill the priest, but nobody's listening to me, just killing whoever they want, because nobody wants to listen to the "stopid" [sic] Ranger. What does she know?
So we get mowed down a little after the 2 minute mark when the enemy team got rez'd on top of us.
Just great. The only team I found in 30 minutes is a bunch of retards. We did this 3 times, each time I'm frantically telling them to kill the priest or the enemies will get rez'd, each time to be left dumbstruck by how thick some people can be.
Any other Rangers ever felt the same?

rangers rule. I have six characters, one of each class, and my ranger is my favorite followed by mesmer/ele. Join a guild that supports rangers. My guild goes farming in UW with nothing but rangers. I suggest you hang at temple of ages and look for underworld ranger groups, and perhaps you can find a ranger-friendly guild in there, one that will also help you with other missions and quests.
Loch
It's not cuz you're a ranger; it's because you're doing Ascension missions. Any idiot who played long enough to get to the desert is now trying to beat missions that take an ounce of skill.
My advice? Consider henchmen groups until you hit Dragon's Lair. Sure it can be boring, but it saved me from loads of frustration. It sounds like you have some commanding skills, so henchmen WILL work for you.
Also, anyone who thinks the following is a complete moron and should be avoided:
-Rangers have no use
-Mesmers don't do anything good
-Necros without wells are garbage
-Henchmen monks never work

Someone's signature on another popular Guild Wars says it perfectly:
Easy: Do the mission with your guild.
Normal: Do the mission with henchmen.
Hard: Do the mission with a pick-up group.

Thanks Loch, I might try that.

Sometimes the whole middle portion of the game can get to be a real pain, not only for rangers... but mesmers and necros too. Since the group size is 6, most of the idiot PUGers out there think that automatically means "2 00ber tanks, 2 n00kers, and 2 super monkz". All others need not apply. :P
mortalis doleo
the reason you might have been kicked doesnt have to be because you are a ranger. it could be because you were lvl 18 (unless they specified the reason for kicking).
One and Two
at thirsty river being level 18 sucks ass for rangers. My monk? Level 10 and accepted with pleasure at thirsty. People are f*cking morons.
heist23
i hate it how ignorant people can be. every now and then when i'm low on gold, i tend to head over to the War Camp and say "R/Mo LFG for farming the furnace". what a surprise, no replies. it's like this in every outpost or mission i went to.

I think it's because there are many rangers who just don't know how to play as a ranger. I played with a trapper ranger today at Thirsty River and she was just plain annoying! Never really used many traps and kept begging for gold to buy Flame Trap. If I haven't watched my friend run circles around me and mobs as a ranger, I'd think that rangers were next to useless too. * Ducks to avoid flames from trapper rangers and other ranger loving players *

According to a "poll" on the forums not too long ago, the majority of the forum-going players like rangers most of all. It's just too bad we don't play in the same place :/

I've played a ranger since release. Depends where you are. Generally it seems that if there aren't 'enough' monks for the teams liking, then its the ranger that will get kicked for another monk. That or the mesmer.
However I was helping a friend through ascension missions last night. In 2 of the 3 missions, i was the only one left alive at points (with a W/N, N/Mo, E/Mo and 2 henchies). Rangers are the 'best' in that they're adaptable, but people think adaptable means rubbish at everything. Nonsense. Means we can hang in there that bit longer
Just keep trying. Problem with ascension is everyone just wants to get through it. Took me days to do Thirsty River when I ascended, because I kept getting bad groups. Last night did it 2nd go (and only coz the stupid hero died at the last group first time lol).
So just keep on trying, or if you really feel desperate, take some henchies and try it

I highly doubt the "Ranger to X ratio" to be that high. My observation tells me rangers being a QUITE popular class. Now the thing or problem is that most rangers are really bad. You find the "Pets are so cute" with "charm animal" being their only beastmastery skill, the "Look I am an Elf" [random LOTR-ripoff nickname)/Legolas/Aragorn-wannabes who "spam" PBS into a mob and use troll unguent whenever it refreshes.
The Ranger class is one of the best in the game but hard to master and use effectively. Good thing that the broken interrupt-spamming has been fixed forcing you to time your shots instead of hoping they match with the target's activated skill in time.

I just got totally ignored by around 5 or 6 groups in Hells precipice. Totally bored with standing and spamming, i got my monk instead.
Within seconds i received invitations.
I asked why i should join their groups when they didn't want my ranger. I got no reply.
It's an anti-ranger conspiracy i tell you.
"Forming group, need monks, tanks and nukers. Invite self!"

You have to promote yourself more as a ranger/mes/necro. Because they dont fit into the trio (Monk, Warrior, Elementalist).
That or find an all ranger group (those are popular the latter part of the game I hear).

My ranger can deal 30-40 dmg to a group of enemies consistently and quickly, outdamging a lot of eles. But people dont seem to care. People are simply convinced thast the game was meant to be played with the typical healer/tank/combo.

I'm not bashing Rangers, I'm just stating the fact that of all the places in the game, that's the ONE place where you can't go without them.

The game does stay fairly balanced.
(I have also read from other sources that all the later missions in the game are easily done with ranger groups - maybe taking 1 monk for backup).

I don't have character space for a Ranger, but there are more Rangers on my friends list than any other profession. Rangers are *fantastic* additions to a party.
Good luck finding groups,

Partied with 6 rangers last night. I needed the bonus for my monk. Took the monk hench also. Fastest trip ever through Dragon's Lair. Glint was dead in under a minute. Seemed to be a hailstorm of disruptions and pindowns. I barely had to heal.

Rangers rock..
I did the reversal run from Droknars to Beacons just for fun with a group of players, randomly put together..
We were 2 rangers in the group. We were by far the damage and tanking output of the group. Many times it was just me and him standing...back to back or running repositioning ourselfs together...always helping each other and finishing off the mobs before we ressed the rest of the group...
It was just too bad that Europe didnt have the favor so we could have gotten some of the DP taken away by the statues...
But I was proud of my ranger. He wasn't as good as the other ranger but still I couldn't stop thinging how the group would have faired with more rangers...
now that would have been a slaughter fest..
I am sorry you get that from groups. I still get that sometimes if I revisit some towns for a quick mission or two...

Ps we reached Beacons....

But... there is one thing I despise about the ranger class.. and that's the secondary ranger who brings charm animal, but no other skill for it! I've learned that the rangers pet is a good ally and that keeping it alive is almost as important as the group (the ranger should be looking out for his/her pet too though). What REALLY frustrated me was doing Ring of Fire and actually being in a position to put some prot. spells onto what I thought was the rangers pet. Turns out, the pet died reasonably fast and upon asking if someone was gonna rez the pet, being told by our mesmer that she didn't bring the skill to rez it. I would have prefered a better mesmer skill, or ranger skill instead of a pet which only stayed alive because I care about pets.
I do have an ele who's second prof. is ranger, and she has a pet which I take on quests with henchies, but often for missions will prefer to go without, giving me 3-4 more ele skills to use.

I know what it's like to be booted from teams and i am a competant necro so i started to play with henchies and i did all the mission and once i accidently joined a group that ran the mission. I was pissed.

All ranger groups have been used in Underworld a lot as trapper teams. But not very exciting.

For example I used my ranger in SF yesterday. On the Alkar mission, I trapped Dust Trap around the priest to protect him, and both monks in our party went to support the team to bring the crystals, so that healing was never spread out. The Dust Trap did its trick 5x, and I used Throw Dirt and evasive stances to keep stand till the team got back. By the time they did, the enemies were allready 3/4 dead.
In one of the Galen Trask subquests I spammed interrupts on the Flame Djinn, and was able to lock Consuming Flames and interrupt the Flourish.

I went with my ranger to the Ring of Fire mission a few days back, and for some wierd reason, about 80% of the people waiting to do the mission were rangers. I joked about lets make an all ranger party, and everyone there was for it! Well, we took two henchy monks but were otherwise 6 rangers, and we had no problems and a lot of fun with this mission! BTW: nothing against BM, but for some reason all 6 of us did not take pets here. Imagine what pain a number of rangers packing the elite skill Barrage can cause!
I also experienced getting a party together for Thunderkeep, where we had 3 rangers in the party. A warrior joined, looked at the party members, said "What? Three rangers?" and bam, he left. We filled up the party with a henchy warrior, two henchy monks, and two other human non-warrior players, and finished the mission successfully!
The misconception is that a ranger just takes along a bow and does a little bit of damage from a distance. The real situation what people don't realize, is that a well equipped ranger is a fantastic skill and spell disrupter, and has the capacity to blind an entire group of foes engaging the team's tanks for a whole lot of seconds (throw dirt). And then there is that nice area damage skill Barrage. Coupled with lightning reflexes, its like using an area effect machine gun. And then there is the tanking pet, if one chooses BM - I saw a ranger's pet take on 3 Jades single handedly (our warrior was dead) without losing much health.
Never give up on your ranger, just find other people to party with!

Okay, I started off with all henchies. Then Death Omen came on and he was gonna come along, but he had to jumpstart a car (bum).
So I got tired of waiting, and felt sorry for a mesmer and another necro, knowing that they probably had the same problems I did (I asked them, turns out they did/do)
So we had healer henchie, and two warrior henchies, with a level 17 Necro and level 18 Mesmer. We almost finished it, but I blame our loss on a glitch. The very last team got rez'd a few seconds after we killed the priest... weird.
We worked so well together we added each other to our respective friends lists, so we can do the mission again some time.

Keep trying and don't give up! Thirsty river was a nightmare for me with my first character, but now it is so easy, I usually can do it with the bonus (last three teams within 6 minutes).
This is one mission where at least one ranger in the group is a superb benefit, if that ranger takes along some skill/spell disrupting shots. With my ranger I took savage shot and distracting shot, and my main task was to disrupt the healers and spell casters as much as possible. And when we got to the last, most difficult group (the one with the monk boss and the priest, both healing each other) I concentrated on disrupting the priest while our group mesmer worked on the boss.

I understand. As a Ranger/N myself I have alot of trouble finding a group.
Groups will usually only have 1-2 slots available for the Rangers, Mesmers and Necromancers.
6s: 2W,2E,1-2Mo, 1-2 Odd
8s: 2W,2E,2Mo, 2 Odds
So there isn't that much space for us Rangers and all....In the tougher missions people like bringing Necromancers because of their Wells, Minion and energy regeneration skills.
But I think the most deprived of the 3 odds is really the Mesmer compared to the Ranger and/or the Necromancer.
------------------------------------
Tip to get into a party: Form your own party and invite those *you* want instead of trying to get into a group.
Ranger versatility:
Warrior replacer: Beastmasters. If you play your cards right the beastmaster can use his pet to tank.
Elementalist replacer: Trapers. Trapping and barrage and/or ignite work wonders and really helps to nuke. Have fun using escape+traps in mobs.
Monk replacer: Survivalists(wilderness survival+expertise). Keeping yourself healed (troll unguent, Melandru's resilience) and potentially others with healing spring as well as evading attacks with skills such as dryder's defence are good ways to stretch another monk's resources as well as help him/her along
Mesmer replacer: Interupting range (marksmanship+beastmastery).
I find it interesting that a Ranger's pet can interupt and perform different pet attacks while the Ranger does something else entirely. Beastial pounce + hunter's shot as well as feral lunge.
------------------------------------
Personal experience in Ranger versatility
(I use a R/N Beastmaster/Curse)
I was in a group of 6 when the only warrior and one of the 2 elementalist decided to leave 3/4 of the mission through. We had a Pyromancer, a healer and a necromancer(blood)
I said: ''Don't leave, we can still finnish it! My Boar can tank and I have mark of pain+ignite so me and my boar can help nuke.''
(My combo consists of casting mark of pain on a creature, sending my boar to agro and hit that creature, igniting my arrows and using call of protection)
They agreed to try it and noticed...my boar *can* tank and I *can* nuke.
So we went a little slower than if we had +2 players....but I did replace 2 players and we finnished the mission non-the-less.
But all this to say that : Yes! rangers are *very* versatile and should never be ommitted from a group.
