Is that people dont understand that there is a post-searing Ascalon.

They think the game is as is, once your done the quests your done the game.

I dont know why people are missing this. This needs to be publicized more or something.

When I first installed the game, Ironically, Lord Tydus was like the 3rd being i spoke with, so don't know how anyone could be that uninformed. "Searing" is screaming at your from all sides, and once you go "over the north wall" there is no way in hades you cannot sense that everything changes once you slip off to the academy. I dunno. Some people cannot or WILL not read the lore contained in the manual

The bane of all games are the gamers, period.

Example: Today I was playing the Nolani Academy mission with a party We had one level 11 monk. Here is how it looked:
*I click on a map spot. She advances past it and runs towards the enemy*
Death At The Door: Don't Move.
Death At The Door: DONT MOVE
Death At The Door: D-O-N-T- M-O-V-E!!!!!
*She continues running towards the enemy (6-7 level 10 ghosts) and gets killed. A party member res her. She heals herself and runs into another group of 6-7 ghosts
Her: This party sucks I am out.
Thanks to her, we've been stranded in the begining of the Nolani Academy with no monk. Of course, me and my new friend returned to Nolani, got two party members and the mission was lighting-fast. I made two friends and a lot of money.

The point is, many players do not know that:
- The levelcap will stay.
- That they do not need materials to make a cape
- That Pre-Searing is not the whole game.
- That missions are not "OMGWTF HARD HARD HARD" if you don't rush right in.
- That communication is essential.
- That you do NOT need to repeat "WTB FURS WTB FURS WTB FURS WTB FURS" to buy furs in Ascalon.
- That crafters/merchants have a tag by their name
- That "Monk" is not a guy who wants to be Man of Steel
- That the manual is not THAT hard to read
- That CTRL is a key on a keyboard

sorry

I honestly was only marginally impressed with the game when I initially played. My first session involved several hours of play in pre-searing Ascalon, doing whatever random quests I was able to pick up. The main things I noticed at this time were:
  • Beautiful Graphics!
  • I can't jump!
  • The collision is a bit annoying,
  • I can dig this secondary class system,
  • Wow some of these quests take a long time for little reward.
  • I can't find any cool armor. =(
Then, I left pre-searing Ascalon. I had my first, relatively confusing, PvP encounter. I went on my first mission and grouped for the first time (except for the 30 seconds I grouped to get rez signet).

The fun really started for me in post-searing Ascalon, which I feel is an unfortunate flaw on the part of ArenaNet. The game is quite good, but the newbie world is almost too big and isn't even as good as what the future holds. The unfortunate part? That means a lot of people will quit before they even get to the good stuff, losing them potential income.

Sadly, i've also seen quite a few people - enough to make it stand out in my mind as a definite problem - that, somehow, just don't realize that PSA is a tutorial, and only a fraction of the game.
I suspect that the problem lies in the fact that, even though every single Guard you come across will give you the quest to go to the Academy, that is completed once you talk to Sir Tydus (who thusly tells you to scram, and don't come back until you're at least level three.) People go on and start doing other quests, and I can only assume that they somehow manage.. to forget to talk to Tydus when they're done. Either that, or no one is reading the quest Lore in the first place, and is only trying to zip through in the interests of being instant-sobakawa-miracle-pillow-omfglevel20 as fast as possible.
The problem is; how do you make moving on any more obvious than it already is - without insulting the intelligence of the average user? As much fun as a singing, dancing Tydus trying desperately to get people's attentions would be, perhaps there should just be a notice in the quest log after [x] level reminding people that they can move on.

Players should probably be auto-quested at level 5 with the quest to move on to greater journeys. It should be highlighted as a primary quest as well, and should include a description like:

You have already done much to aid this area of the world. Greater journeys await beyond the borders of this isolated region. Speak with Sir Tydus to embark upon an epic quest to reach a new land.

I think the problem is that some people don't read anything. (I'd say "can't" but that's not nice) ALL of the guards have the green exclamation point over their heads. Everyone learns early that it means a quest. It IS marked as a primary quest in the quest log. (I suspect these people don't know how to access the log) The log tells you who to talk to if you forget and Sir Tydus will have a green exclamation point over his head after you talk to a guard. It can't get much more obvious. Personally I expected more people complaining that they didn't notice that it was a oneway quest rather than not finding it at all!

exactly

One problem for me personally, and please keep in mind that I am only referring to what I see on a regular basis, is people spamming the sale of x item, but never RESPONDING to offers for items that are actually in quite high demand.

For example, there should be, in my opinion, a limit to the amount of times someone can hit the up arrow on their keyboard and type "where is tydus". Although my machine can handle this game at max setting most of the time, that constant repetition of "where you at gerabaldi!" every 3.2 seconds often makes the game go into snail on sedatives mode.

This is a flaw that I do not believe was intentionally put into the game, but rather an oversight on the part of AN.

While I am sitting here thinking about it all, and away from home where my precious install of GW is (lamented sigh), I also have another big time gripe, but, like my first one, is not a game-killing one:

The emotes are beyond excessive. I like the dancing and scaring up until about the 500th time, and although it is cute for a while, it is also confusing as hell to me, because the system message simply states: "captain sputumpants scares you". I always assume its me, and make a dumbass out of myself asking them why or try to speak to them and get told rude things like "buzz off I wasn't speaking to you." Perhaps a color coded system would tell me that I am, in fact, the person being scared, and not pizzaroll bob.

Just turn the emotes off! I do. Most of the time it's just someone trying out the emotes and laughing at themselves.

Oh, thats what they mean by Pre-Searing Ascalon and Post-Searing Ascalon. Here I was thinking that it had something to do with cooking in the game. Silly me. Instruction books are for kids.

Its a checkbox in the main chat window. You still see the visual emotes just notthe text line that accompanies them.

It is amazing how nice the game is with emotes, trade and local chat turned off. I run around and see a bunch of people dancing, I get my business done in town and head back out. I saved up to make a guild for 3 of us to avoid the 57 guild invites I get a day.

The only maintanence now is clicking the decline group button 5 times per visit

What a wonderfully quiet MMORPG :P

Just me my lil girl and best friend, ohh and our friendly Monk hirling.

I love it!

Maybe we could make a nice "RTFM" section on this site for people to go to.

Guy: "Hey, what button jumps? How do I get to Lakeside County? Why can I only make parties of two people?"

Me: "www.guildwarsguru.com/rtfm.html"

Well... it would be funny anyways.

Good Idea...people don't look around or bother reading. It was the same in WoW people get a quest look at the objectives and spam general looking for where random mob x was or where random dude y is. It got really annoying, so most of the time I told them wrong info.

Does anybody else find it annoying that you cannot see other people countryside? I've always found the ability to constatntly interact and run around other players to be the entire reason for playing MMORPGs. Maybe its just my lack of guild or grouping so far though... or did i just install it wrong lol

Correct me if I'm wrong, but after you complete all the primary quests, and return the respective quest givers for the rewards, Sir tydus no longer has an ! over his head. I myself was wondering how to get into the academy having completed all the quests, I looked at Tydus who did NOT have an ! overhead and clicked on him to talk. He had an option to go into the academy which I took and there i was in post-searing Ascalon.

They need to put in a ! over Tydus' head so people know to talk to him again after all of the primary quests are done.

I agree and had the same trouble. I had no clue I needed to talk to him because of no "!".

See other people contryside? Not sure what you mean? When you zone to Old Ascalon, etc. (other then the teleport areas) you are given your "own" copy of that zone. So no one (other then your party members) will be in that zone with you. I think you are talking like EQ or something where you can see people in zones outside the teleport areas? if not I don't know what you mean...

I have to say I found a little bit of confusion with PSA also. But after reading Tydas saying something to the effect of 'when you accept this theres no turning back' made me make sure I had done everything before I left. Its not that difficult really I dont think theres much problem with it. If you read and involve yourself in the storyline your fine. Even if you were just to read the couple of lines Tydas says your fine.

So the moral of this story is err read :P

Correctly me if I'm wrong....but don't they have a quest that says "Enter the Academy" or some such?

If not, then Anet should keep that quest at the top of the Quest list (and mark it as primary) all the time until the player has actually entered the academy.

Zai

Yes he does have a ! over his head. You get a quest from any guard to talk to him, he gets a ! over his head, you finish that quest and he tells you right then about the event and how you should talk to him again when you are ready. From that point on he has no !, but if you had read what he told you there would be no confusion.

In a RPG you need to read everything a NPC tells you.

(Haven't re-read the above like because reading is hard )

ESRB is missing the picture: it's not the question whether you can show female breasts to a 15 years old but the question of whether he'll be able to read the game manual. I believe that only people able to spell "someone" (it's not sum1, dammit!) should be allowed to play RPGs.

I think it's fine the way it is. Actually, it should be more obscure than it it to weed out even more of the l4merz that won't read so we don't have to put up with as many of them outside the noob area.
