Why is farming wrong?
rugal nuker
I heard many ppl discoraging farming and said that it is not right to farm? why?lol....i mean, its only part of the game to earn money right?

No and you are abusing the system when you farm, stop doing it so I will get more stuff and you have to give me your first born female child and all your real life money for anything you get in the game.

Farming is ok.. everyone do it in a way or another. I was getting Hydra claw today for my friend so he can get a new weapon. I went in skyward reach and killed hydras until i get the claws and that's it.. You don't see me there for hours everyday.
What's not too good is abusive farming. It push the devs to change things that will affect everyone. And sadly, the abusive farmers are the firsts to complains about those fixing. Then 2 day after game updates such as the popular November 11 update, people have found new way to farm and continue their abusive farming until there's more changes affecting everyone.
The big problem with farming is that its easy and you get a lot more items and money than with any groups. For expemple i was doing the dune of despair mission with my friend and PUG earlier. I had something like 3 or 4 items. And while i was checking for his hydra claw, my inventory was half full and i made about 1k. They need to put item drop equivalent(sp) to party side. So if you are in a group of 8, everyone could get as much items as if he were solo.
This idea could seem weird to people who like games to be the most realistic possible but i think that if there's 6 people in a party, a monster instead of dropping 1 sword for a random member could drop 1 sword for each member.

And yes, farming is not really bad, it's just that it's annoying and causes nerf guns to come out and really takes away from people who don't abuse skills.

The way I see it.. farming is not bad... in fact it extend the game play.
What is bad is the consequences...
In other MMO, usually you farm to get the next best item, like steps, slowly progressing upward. However, in GW, you reach the max cap too easily, and there is no next step up (beside getting a nicer looks). So people will just tend to hold on, and horde their money. Well, this create a big serpation between the old and the new player, and making it hard for the Devs to add any new stuff in. GW is just not a game build for farming, and when people farm, it break up the overall game play.

Nothing against honest farmers was the phrase quoted by Gaile Grey was it not =p
I love to farm, the thrill of being able to solo a bunch of monsters and get good drops but the consequences from ANet just ruin the game for everyone in one way or another. But oh well, nothing will change, a new build a new patch.

Just think about chests. People were abusing them. Now everyone, instead of just being happy finding a chest and get a couple more items have to get a key that cost 3 time the item you will get to open it.
Before, people were happy to find a rune and could make a money with it, now they all cost from 25 to 50 gold beside from superior vigor and absorbtion that cost 100k.
AoE don't just affect farmer. Elementalist get almost only AoE spell in the beggining. I don't care about AoE effect since i can use it at my advantage or mixed with other skills but i'm sure a lot of people find it anoying.
Dyes all worth 100 to 400 gold or so.. beside black dye that worth 9k
I don't care about price of the gold/green weapons since i dont need them anyway but imagine anyone who just play the game normaly who wanted a good looking shield that fit just right with his brand new droknar armor that just ruined him... He would have to get 50k or more just because the shield looks somewhat good. Prices of cosmetic stuff raised so high that only abusive farmer can affort it since they are the only one with that amount of money.

Something I have discovered about farming. If you farm the WHOLE AREA, you'll get your quota of gold, purple, blue and white drops. But, if you specific farm like just griffons or just trolls or just one particular group that used to drop loads of stuff, this is what has changed. I started farming lower level areas around lvl 14 to 16 and I've been getting huge drops of gold, purple, blue and white, but, I play the WHOLE AREA. I got two gold drops in a row two days ago and I nearly croaked. lol These aren't max dmg stuff in many cases, but, they do have upgrades on them that are actually worth some money, like 10/10 sundering or % enchantments or armor upgrades and hp upgrades that are pretty valuable.
I even did Greniths Footprint with 5 henchies the WHOLE zone and I got a couple of nice gold drops a few purples and the normal blues and whites. So, I'm definitely seeing a fairness in the way they are doing it. Do the WHOLE zone and you will get your rewards. Farm specifics and you might get crap for several times through them.
Nearly everytime I go farming I make 10k easy. Just piddling around enjoying the zone. And since I play so many zones I don't get bored this way. I would go silly bananna's if I farmed Griffon's and Trolls over and over and over again.
I will tell you one of my favorite zones. Diessa Lowlands. It's not great for much of any kind of drops except some minor warrior ones, but, the sheer fun of just taking on the "platform of Charr" isn't matched anywhere else in the game. You have got to try to solo it to see the fun that it gives. 100's of Charr (well not that many), but, it's definitely and adrinilin rush to stay alive. And the other one NE of Diessa Lowlands where Althea's Ashes are is quite a fun zone as well. I love fighting the Charr though, best mobs in the overall game too me.
There's entirely too many scorpions in this game though, really I'm a little disappointed in the art of most of the monsters in the first place. Just so much sameness. Minotaurs and Ataxe? give me a break they are the same art with some touch ups. Reminds me of Everquest and the abuse they did with the artwork of goblins and orcs, change the color and called them something else. lol The undead look like kids in halloween costumes. Especially Sorcerers, Warlocks and Monks/Mesmers. Where's the zombies? Where's the mummies? The undead hellhounds were about the only kewl graphic art for the undead. The desert was full of everything I'd seen before, that was a totally boring romp. Some things in Hell were pretty kewl, but, still rather ugly artwork. To me the Charr were the best artwork of mobs in the entire game. Guess that's why I like fighting against them so much. They were vicious looking and fast.
They need someone with a vivid imagination to create some kewl looking monsters in this game. These are boring as an empty tin of peecan pie.

I have no problem with farmers, its the ones who use the in game gold to earn real money, that bother me, or the ones who buy in game gold from e-bay and such, and think theyre completely justified because "they dont have time to farm, like everyone else"
Red Sonya
I tend to not let "what other people do" bother me. I'm playing my own game for my own fun and entertainment. I'm not about vanity items (rather find them myself if I can or earn them) so it doesn't bother me to see someone bought their gear on ebay or anywhere else. They don't affect my fun or gameplay in the least (since I am going to get what me personally has earned and deserves or lucked out getting out of the game). And all you really gotta do to get to them is say: "Wow that's the ugliest armor I've ever seen" Drives em nuts! haha

For me, farming is an exciting part of this game. I enjoy going out to SF to farm for green items, for example. But I am perhaps a bit different from many of the rest of the GW players. I don't farm to find things to sell. I don't farm constantly, just when the mood hits me. When I find a green item that I don't have yet, I am extremely happy and satisfied. I only have the green items that I myself have found, barring a few that I have traded for with my playing partner. I have never purchased a green item, and never will.
And after all the many hours, days and weeks of playing GW, farming for green items (for example) is still a thrill! Compare this to the typical GW player that farms anywhere for items that can be sold and converted to gold, and then goes out and buys his character(s) all the green items that he could want. Now he has his greens. And suddenly, for some reason, going out to SF seems kind of boring .......

I enjoy the challenge of soloing large mobs, and if a by-product is enough gold to buy my 15k armour that's great
Although 15k armour is purely aesthetic, if you want it farming is a must. I took one of my characters pretty much right through the game - doing every mission & quest on the way. Even with only one armour upgrade during the entire run, I only ended up with about 25k. So how else are you supposed to get the 15k stuff other than by farming?

But nothing else in the game is so expensive that you have to dedicate a significant portion of your gaming time to farming. Assuming you are playing out the quests and missions, not just once but perhaps a few times to help friends that you meet along the way, then you will naturally acquire enough money through creature drops for most of what you need. Supplement this income with a little bit of farming and with selling (perhaps just to merchants) those more expensive rune drops that you occasionally will get and which you might not need for your characters, and you have even more money. Then stop buying weapons and weapon upgrades from other human players, wait instead until you find them yourself, and your money needs will decrease.
So in the end, unless you are going for FOW armour, then a little dedicated farming now and then should be enough.
On the other hand, if you are one of these players that likes to run around monsters instead of fighting them and who wants to get missons over with on the first try and never do them again, well, then you are going to have problems getting money, aren't you?

my way of farming: killing every single living (or undead) thing in sight, drop the crappy items for better items, use up a few keys on chests, and thats it,
Shimus DarkRaven
There will be people against this and for this until the end of time.
It's all how you look on the subject. I look on farming when I "have" to and not just "want" to as making an "honest" living, as the prices are high. Other people look at farming as "Exploiting" the system, and I think half the reason they feel this way is that they themselves can get money through some other end <like trading, or begging>. Granted, I'm not saying they do these things, but it's a possibility. At least with farming<or repeated kills for loot and money> is not begging money off of other people, and people who sit on their rump trading <Which is myself, I have to admit, sometimes> but I like farming due to the fact you can earn money and enjoy the game without repeatedly typing in the same sentence like:
"WTS 10/10 Sundering Hilt!" or "PLEASE GIVE ME MONEY I'M NEW" <---These people then complain they can't sell/aren't being given money then rip on farming do to the fact they didn't see they could do it in the first place to HONESTLY earn a living.
That's my take on it.

PS: To clarify, I'm not baggin on traders or new players, just the few that match my description!

I think you get what I mean .
Usually I tag along with the trapper groups my Guild organizes, so four or five of us in the UW. It's still not efficient.
I know some people think that Fissure armour is pointless, but personally I'm a perfectionist, so getting Fissure armour for at least one character is definitely high on my list of priorities.
In my opinion, if ANet want to reduce the amount of people farming, they should give us a reason to farm in groups. Say, everybody gets a drop from an enemy. Something like that.
Battle Torn
its Anets fault if they create a game and people play it.... then say that some people are abusing the system when all they are doing is playing the game and visiting the same area over and over.
pft... play the game and get on with it.... if the software allows you to do something then it shouldnt be looked at as anything else but part of the game....yeh good idea they need to encourage people to play in teams....whats wrong with good quest item rewards for everyone?

I spend most of my time now going to SF or FOW or UW, mostly with friends, and mostly with a full party (ok, for SF maybe 6/8). I try to play every evening for a number of hours, but a lot of that time is spent just chatting at some outpost. And my rate of accumulation of money from drops sold to merchants + ectos + shards is such that I probably could afford FOW armor for one character in, yes, a long time but no where near a year. Supplement this with the occasional rare find of a superior rune of value or black dye, and I probably could afford FOW armor after a number of months of casual playing. And besides, wasn't that the whole point of an elitist armour like FOW? If you didn't have to break your butt to get it, it wouldn't be worth having.

One of those 15k armors was achieved without the help of farming and took me forever to get.

I agree completely. I spent a lot of time - fairly early in the game - trading. As Shimus said later in his note, I have nothing against traders. It's just that - for me - it was unpleasant standing around in LA 1 shouting WTS. So I started farming as a way to earn the gold I wanted (not needed, those who say that you don't need a bunch of gold are absolutely right - it's just that I wanted it). At first it was a chore but (for me, your own mileage may vary) but now it's actually fun. And, I do think I've learned a little about builds along the way. I'm not recommending farming. If it bores you or seems wrong, of course you shouldn't do it. But it's become an enjoyable part (about 20% for me) of the game. I know others in game who truly enjoy trading. And for them, it's an exciting part of the game. That seems fine too. What I am saying is that one of the really nice things about this game is that it offers a lot of different ways to play.

Exactly. I said earlier that Fissure armour is one of my goals, so obviously I'm farming for a reason, but I do enjoy it. It's relaxing. After a hard mission or quest or whatever, it's nice to just sit back and massacre some Griffons.

I don't really farm. I just happen to like roaming around the maps. Like yesterday, Droknar's and on up to Icedome and thence to Frozen Forest and then over to Iron Mines. Lots of fun, for me anyway, and a good thing I do it for fun, because total drops out of all that was almost nothing.
temp
Only recently did I FINALLY get my monk builds perfect for farming
I enjoy the thrill of going out and having 20 or so creatures chasing me for my blood...then making them kill themselves...its a great buzz. Especially when you look at the ground and see about 5k worth of drops in one area. =D
The problem is...as been said before...people who spend hours and hours (I mean like 4hours+) just farming one area over and over, bleeding it for all it's worth. I will admit I have done this on occasions, but man was I board. You know the route, where the monsters spawn, how to avoid them...the only buzz is seeing a gold unidentified armour drop on the floor...with your name on it.
One thing I will never understand is...the 15k and fissure armour...why do people want it?????
With the FoW armour I understand that it does make you look god like [except the necro one.... looks crap] but it costs in the reason of 1 million gold for it...not to mention the trek to get it. INSANE. Spending tones and tones of money and time farming/buying/trading for your materials to get armour that is no better than the armour you get in droknars forge.
Personally I love my Necro's Tormentor armour from droks and my Monks tattoos from droks
15k armour is just as bad...not AS bad...but you get the impression. For Necros it is worse than Droks armour (granite armour that is) and the Grotto armour is just different looks [except the Tormentor's armour...still looks the same....]. 15k a piece...all the delrimor steel, hides, time, money...WHY...is your self confidence so low that you need other people to say
"Oh look at you, you spend around 100k[or 1 million in the case of FoW] on armour...your hardcore...you must be good if you can afford that..."
Sad, just sad.
But the people who buy these items often FARM for ages to get them. Then people who understand that people need the items for the armour will also go out and farm for them...only to sell them on....
As you can only hold 1.4 million in the whole game (1 mill in storage 100k in the wallet of each of you Char's) people resort to Ecto's as a form of currency. Thus meaning that the UW its raped of all the ecto's you can find. I must admit I am farming for Ectos at the moment, and I will also admit it for a stupid cause (one reason is to pay my friend back for all the items/time he's given me, the other is to get enough money so that when Chapter 2 comes around I wont have to worry) but I'm not down there for hours on end, day in day out.
Farming does have knock on effects...the patch...but it makes people be more creative with their builds then...and Arena don't seem to have made it imposible to farm solo (if they wanted to do that im sure they'd make it so you couldn't leave a town on your own or something like that), just more challenging.
I for one welcome this challenge, namely because I can profit from it, but also others can too. The more ectos you farm, the more ectos you get. The more ectos you sell to the trader, the cheaper they become. If things continue Ecto's will soon be priced and below 10k at the trader, or who knows even less than that, same for shards, and Sup runes (sup vigor has dropped quite a bit lately).
My theory is the more you sell to traders, the more people benefit from it. If I have the chance I sell materials to traders thus lowering the in game price. If others also did this then the need to farm would greatly decrease.

I have 15k armour for all three of my characters - though it's only Grotto & Granite - because it looks nice and it's rewarding to get it. I would like to get Fissure, but I hate going to the FoW and UW.

imaginary friend
imo farming is only bad to the people that dont know how, so they rant and rant about how people should not farm and whine about nerfing farmers.

People will bring up the same topics for years to come, and coincedentally, might get shut down with a mod saying, "Hey, this has been done already. Use the search button"
But yeah, I agree overall..people are repeating debates. But it's good to bring a new wind to an old subject..it's called a bump
