You know you're in a good guild if you are the leader and declare it a monarchy... then people start bowing down to you and calling you "Your Highness."

.... you threaten the use of Unyielding Aura and you start getting taunted into emote wars.

And we're all just laughing in front of our respective computers.

Hmm... all in all I have to say the #1 sign of a good guild is lots of laughter.

You know when you are in a bad guild when :-

After much intense badgering you agree to move to the US servers to be with the rest of the guild (even though most of them are from Europe anyway). This is after joining the guild on the proviso that I did not HAVE to move servers in the first place. Shortly after joining and moving servers you take a long weekend off to visit old uni friends. On coming back and logging on you find that the guild has self-destructed (after an arguement about something really trivial), leaving yourself and the leader as the only ones left.

Thats when you take a 3 month break, move back to euro servers and decide that you are never switching servers again. I suppose I did not help myself when I refused to go to the UW on general principles (I passionately do not believe in a pvp aspect of the game affecting where you can go in pve and still don't). I am surprised that you are still limited to 5 server switches still, thought they were getting rid of that.

Quick question: Do people in other guild use guild chat as a means to have a casual chat with other guildies e.g. how was your day?. The guild im in only has these words going through the guild chat:

1. Hey *other person* can you go UW farm with me
2. I'm two ecto away from FoW armor
3. Hey *other person again* can you help me with SF farming
4. Can i have ***** gold, colth etc.
5. Can somone run me too ****
6. Hi Everyone
7. Bye Everyone

From the first hour i joind i heard 4&5 alot of times.

I had more friendly talk in ten minutes with two people in maguuma stade last night who just Hi and we started talking. That was the first time i have had a friendly chat in 6 months of playing.

I havent been in a good guild so i cant say "You know you’re in a good Guild when:"

But i can say "You know your in a bad guild when..."
- The leader logs in for 10 minutes every 5 days
- You have more than 50 people but 35 of them havent been on for more than 2 months.
- You ask somone a question and they answer it but when they do you feel like they just want you to shut up, so you end up feeling like an outcast.
- One of the members says good night and gets 8 replys, you say it and get one.
- One of the members name is Pwn Ur Ass or Uber Warrior and they act like jerks but no one kicks them becuase they want alot of members in the guild.
- Somone in the guild says "can someone help me with borliss pass" and your the only person to respond, everyone else say that they are to busy farming griffons or ettins.
- Your leader posts builds on your website, but they're FOtM builds from other forums like IWAY and EoE bomb, and doest want to try anything else becuase he says "They must be awsome becuase everyone else is using them".

for me a good guild is talkative/helpful/giving and active (been in 2)

bad guild - only PVP/non active/more worried about money then having a laugh (been in too many 2 count)

my current guild always says hello goodbye etc asking for price checks or just general chat

another example of a bad guild imo is a guild who asks you to submit a essay/application form on why u should be chosen to join <<wtf a game is for fun not for life

right now, im in a great guild, we dont know anyone in real life though we know them all well, ive been in my guild for aobut 3-4 months, we all call each other by there real names, and we dont use vent just for pvp, we use it for regular chat etc.
our officers adn guild leader is very nice and there always willing to help, though we have some members who arent all that helpful, a member we recruited recently was sort of the opposite of what my guild is like, when he came, he begged for money, then spammed on the guild chat that he needed help with this and that, and also left half way through missions, runs etc that he asked for help with.
if ur guild is like the first part of my post, its a good one , though if its on the second part of my post its a bad one .
my first guild wasnt too bad, they were nice and helpful though 90% of the time i logged on there was no more then 3 ppl on

I totally agree. My guild was originally started in another game because a group of us on the forums got to joking around and RP'ing. It went on for a while and finally turned into an ingame joke. We eventually formed a guild based off of this.

Anytime someone needed something, we gave it. It wasn't asked of us, it just happened. If one of us got some cool loot we couldn't use, we saved it for a guild member. The crafter's in our guild made serious money and the other's hunted and gathered the resources to supply the crafter, who passed around the wealth. We were always cutting up in GuildChat and TeamSpeak. Our guild was never very big, but that was OK. We got along fine and always helped each other out with whatever was needed. Most of all, we became friends. We're all scattered between several games now, but we still email and IM each other.

first guild was comparable to a house with a decaying roof and drug addicts coming in and out daily [log on, load up, fall out]

guild announcements were used as communication to offline guildies

the few good members in it jumped to a friends guild and now it's growing growing.

everyone in the new guild is friendly and such, we used to farm together moreso, but not so much this past week.

if someone gets a green someone else was looking for, whoever needs it gets it.

we're just cool like that.

The top two reasons a good guild is good (revised):

1. Fun. If the people aren't fun to be with/talk to, why are you there? (Our guild has a bunch of people who know each other IRL, and it an get pretty amusing to say the least)

2. You have a place! I can't even begint o count how many times I joined a guild, and just felt out of place. I've been in them all; from completely mute, to overhelpful, and get put-out when the 'new recruit' doesn't need their help. The people that seem to have bad guild experiences over and over tend to be quiet, and overly serious. I know my place in my guild. I am the PvE officer in a PvP directed guild. What a match, eh?

[sarcasm] All in all though, the only way to tell if you are in a good guild is if you are in the top 100 on the ranking [/sarcasm]

Oh, lord.. brings back some memories... my first character (and my favorite) was/is a monk/ranger.... and yes, I definately was rockin' a 10 in marksmanship and using a bow, and probably around a 2 in divine favor... oh, how I got yelled at in GvG

in any event, bad: players on their first character ALWAYS asking for $$$
good: constant stream of friendly banter in guildchat

My experiences so far:

BAD guilds:

Guild 1
-after 1 week being a member i was the only one who came online. If there was someone online, he / she didnt talk to me what so ever.

Guild 2
-filled with a bunch of immature kids who formed groups on there own. if i asked to join i couldnt because i was :a) to inexperienced or b) not an officer.
-if i was longer offline then 5 days the guildleader or officers would kick me.
-we couldnt participate or organize team arena's or any form of PvP without the guildleaders approval.

Guild 3
Absolutely the best guild ever! (IMO)
All friendly, mature ppl who always are willing to help if you need it.
There are members grouping together, but they are open so if u wanna join its no problem.
Guildleader and officers are just great. Very experienced too (as it should be ^^)

Last time we were doing GvG, and after a couple wins & losses one of the officers suggested that more members had monks. I was already planning a build for a monk before he said that, so i told him i was gonna make one, along with another guild member.
So...we both made monks, got through pre searing. we arrived in Ascalon (lvls 3 & 5), and the officer ran us ALL the way to DROKNAR!!!
When we arrived there he bought us both complete Droknar armor!
In a few days we gonna start with powerlevelling and ascencion.
Now how's that for a guild!!!!

KENG forever!

What about guild members? When should one think about applying or looking for a guild?

I've got started with my R/me a week ago and have raised him to lvl 13.

I read under DarkWasp's post that a trait of 'bad-guilds' are public advertisements for members. That logically seems like just a ploy to garner members for the guild and not a fine filter for integrity and proactive guild-member material.

So how should someone such as I, weathered from soloing so much, attract the attention of a good guild? For on the player side, it isn't too seemly to be scavenging for a 'guild that helps its players all the time,' or, 'is a great community.'

Since such groupings would be cliques in themselves of a sort, right?

There are good guilds for whatever you do, PvE or PvP. The best way to find a good guild is to search them out, or end up playing with them and having a really good time.

If you are into PvP, the Tombs is a great place to meet people, PvE is much larger, so people are not so easy to find.

Personally, this late in the games existance, I would wait till you have ascended one or more characters before getting into a guild. At release some guilds went through the game together and that was way cool, but since people are at varying levels of play now, that is much harder to do.

ToA is the best place (from what I can tell) to find decent PvE guilds. There is usually a few groups forming up for UW/FoW trying to fill spots. It's always easier to get in if you know 5+ people rather than one.

PvP is more based on experience, and just getting into groups.

(notice, I never say look for guilds in PUG's... hint hint from my time)

I've been in a few guilds before, the thing that matters to me most is the people in the guild, if you can find a guild thats not full of hyperactive kids then your onto a winner.
I think my fav guild was BoR, all the best people from that i still play GW with daily, my current guild is great aswel, still getting to know the members but awesome so far.

Worst guilds have both been PVP, both run by kids who think they can gain ranks by abusing people and being bossy, my advice for someone wanting to join a pvp guild would be to join a pve guild that you know and that plays pvp, that way you get a guild with decent members.

My guild that im in is perfect. Because i play counterstrike with 98% of the people. And like 2 or 3 got invited bcuz they did stuff for people like ran them to droks free and things like that. And everybody is an officer. bcuz its not nice to make people lesser than another person. We just a bunch of weird people that farm i think more than play. Do some pvp. We the heavy PvE farm and light PvP tombs or CA

One of the coolest groups I have spent any time with in the tombs started as a random invite. We went in with four hench and beat someone. Then they were like, ok let's start a real group then. THey invited me on vent and we spent several Sunday mornings together.

Sometimes looking for the perfect group is important, but don't forget to have fun with it.

Bad Guild: one with "cool capes", tolerates phrases like "stfu" to to anyone, says "pwned" instead of "gga" after winning a PvP battle, charges fees for membership, or won't help out with missions, quests, builds, etc. Any scammers in the guild - they'll be scamming you next.

Good Guild: Goofs off on TS, and not just when in-game. Has mature players (especially officers) who help each other out without carrying anyone, has more in common than just a game, runs lower level characters to LA so they won't miss out on events like Halloween or Winterfest, promotes good sportsmanship and knows the value of getting creative when doing things. (~NBK~ : originators of the "Nekkid cut scene"!) And screens people before admitting them to the guild by questing with them, and chatting with them on TS to get to know them.

Actually I'd debate that first post. It's arguable you're doing nobody any favours by playing the game for them, especially the case for new members/new players. Not only do they progress into the game without really understanding how to play at all, but it also encourages dependancy i.e. people constantly asking for something/handouts... no problem with those who've played the game a bit and have some experience, but I personally don't think it's a good idea to be doing everything for newcomers (how will they ever learn anything?)

1) if you happen to be with a pug with a guildmember, contact is easily established.
2) if not, established guilds that are taking new players usually have a forum for applicants. you can fill in an application, and they will consider wether or not you are a good addition to their guild.

I've never accepted random recruits, but I've been in a few guilds.

The first one I was invited to by a player I knew from another guild, although we chatted alot in that guild, the good guild experience only lasted a week. After that is was usually just me and another mate online, so we started thinking about leaving it and joining another.

I then had to do thirsty with my warrior and ended up in a group with 3 people all from the same guild, we rocked that mission. I could see that they understood the game and they clearly had the same opinion about me, because they asked me to join their guild. I first checked if it wasn't an empty one by saking how active everybody was, that seemed good and I joined. Was a great guild, lots of helpful members.

When I came back online after 3 months of not playing (GTA SA syndrome), that guild was as good as empty and another mate I knew in real life asked us to join his guild. That was not a good guild. It had a leader who was only online for 30 mins a day, for GvG only. When we joined for GvG we quickly had it with the guild, the leader was actually the impatient one when we all wanted to sort a strategy.

So already knowing that I was gonna leave that guild I started looking around, posted on the looking for a guild forum and kept an open mind. I got a few responses from that forum, but mostly from american based guilds, and that doesn't work, I play in europe. However I was tombing one day and ended up in an all guild party who needed a mesmer , we played for a bit, won a few, and after it they asked me if I wanted to join their guild.

Now I'm in this guild and it suits me fine, got 5 others from my old one to join me (the leader of the old guild was aparently upset at 2 people leaving and kicked each and everyone from the guild ). This new guild seems quite nice, but you never know until you've been in it a few weeks. But the members are patient with new players even when it comes to pvp and has a no random recruit policy, which I always think is a good thing.

Hope my story was informative!

In my current Guild, I am pretty much the 'recruiting' officer. What we look for is nice and friendly people, as mean an hostile people ruin the gaming experience for everyone. I will randomly (already completed the mission) go to missions and ask LFG to complete such and such. Not only do I get to help people out, but I also get to see if there is a potential candidate. I am sure I'm not the only one to recruit this way, so the word of advice to the ones that are looking for Guilds: BE FRIENDLY in missions. Experience should not be a factor, as skills can be taught...attitude cannot. Good luck to those looking for a Guild

If only I could find a guild like one the OP talked about. lol
I've been in one so far, and my first hour there I was told by the leader to respec my character or start over again. This was after I grouped with several members previously. They were all fun and seemed mature before that.
Not wanted to do much or anything with PvP, I'm finding it very hard to find a good guild to join and finding PuGs for Ascension is getting more and more difficult to do.
So I guess, I can only add to the Bad Guilds experience thus far.

Eh? How do you figure this one out? The essay is perhaps a little overboard but an application form certainly isn't.

How long does it take to fill out an application form? 10-20 minutes max. I'd say, and if that 20 minutes ensures that you get into a good guild then it could be a very well invested 20 minutes.

My guild has an application form and review process, whereby all prospects are required to fill out a very simple questionaire asking about play style, how they heard about us, etc. and then they have a 30 day probation period. During the 30 days they have full guild priveledges and they are treated as an equal. The 30 days allows the prospect and the current members to get to know each other and play together, it also gives us an idea of your activity level and how dedicated to being in our guild you are. At the end of 30 days every guild member has a chance to vote the prospect in or out. More often than not, as long as nobody says no then you'd be in.

We've had tons of applicants who were all, "OMG 30 dayz is 2 lng lol, fuk dis im lveain". This just proves that our system does work, we don't want players like that. We want mature, fun, dedicated players and the application process helps us to weed out the good from the bad.

signs of a good guild:
-when the leader offers to help you complete a quest, and says "no problem" and "no biggie" when you suddenly realized that you've been running in the opposite direction for 30 minutes!

-when your guildmates tell you that 2k gold is a low asking price for selling a black dye.
