Kassad's IDS Ranger/Mes Farmer
Kassad
Well hello people, welcome to my IDS ranger farmer. I got sick and tired of the whole "MM LFG IDS!11!" or "3/5MAN IDS FAMR GRP LOKING 4 BOND3RZ AND H34L3RZ LoL!" spam, so I decided to go for it on my own.
Attributes:
Inspiration Magic 6
Expertise 14 (10+3+Mask)
Wilderness Survival 12 (11+1)
Marksmanship 9 (8+1)
Skills:
Escape [Elite]/Dodge
Point Blank Shot/Power Shot/Any thing of your choice skill
Distracting shot/Savage Shot (Distracting works better here though.)
Mantra of Frost
Storm Chaser
Apply Poison
Antidote Signet/Anything if your going to just run and not fight from Avicara Wise
Troll Unguent
Map:
Legend:
Red Line [Path to Imps]
Blue dot at Granite Citadel [Start Point]
Green Dot [Stone Summit Heretics]
Black Dot [Avicara Group that might spawn in with the imps]
Blue dot Away from granite [Ice imp Cave]
First get past the spawn group just outside Granite. Once you come up to the first patrol use Storm Chaser and run into the big mob up-ahead with herders, use Escape just before you reach them. Dont go onto the first bridge as there may be enemies under and you might aggro, go to the second. Theres a patrol on the second wait for them to get off then run on through.
Tricky part now, so far I have found that there group with 4 heretics near the portal to mineral springs will kill me before I reach the portal. The only option I have gotten is to map-back to Granite and redo the run untill there is a safe passage to the portal. (should only take 2-3 tries)
Now just use Storm chaser and Escape to get to the cave, Note: Avicara Guile and Wise will sometimes not break aggro and keep following. Keep running away from their group untill you way far then stop and kill the avicara, plenty time till his group comes to kill you. Guiles only use Deathly Swarm so their no problem. Wise use Ineptitude which is really annoying, just keep Troll Unguent up at most time during fights and try to distract Ineptitude, if you cant thats fine, just use Antidote Signet.
Make sure you have Apply Poison up all the time during ALL fights.
Now the black dot on the map, is the group of Avicara that "sometimes" spawn near the Ice Imps. Just aggro the group and kill off their Wise's first, run in - attack a few times - run out - repeat, take your time and dont rush in. Then kill the Guile(s) and braves, now off to easy street.
Makes sure you keep up Mantra of Frost up all the time. This part will get you killed if you dont be careful, make sure your aggro bubble is a little bit away from the imps, Flatbow or longbow prefered. (I use Drago's Flatbow) Easiest way is to keep them at range to they are just using normal wand attacks and not spells. If your aggro bubble aggro's an imp, they will use the AoE Spell interupt spell (Dont know how to spell it lol) then will come in close for the Ice Spears.
Try and Distract the spears and keep attacking, poison should keep the DoT going smoothly. Keep attacking them all from range untill they die, Multiple imp aggro's will get you killed most of the time, try not to aggro any at all to close range. Keep Troll Unguent up at all times, if you can.
The Ice Beast is easy to kill, just interupt Mist Form and the poison will help you kill it.
DP Doesnt really make any difference, at about 45% it gets tricky.
I hope you enjoyed my ranger build, Feel free to Whisper me in-game for any questions.
EDIT-
Seems like the lvl 10 Golems are lvl 20+ now. They still pose no threat, just distract trident. Trolls are now in the cave, I suggest Escape so you can kill them easily.

Very nice. Good to know that there is another profession besides the Warrior that can solo them.
Pevil Lihatuh
wonderful, i've been trying with henchies and the problem is they rush in and die. Thankfully I'm a R/Me... love you right now! lol.

I just bored of spamming "Lfg IDS Farm add me" so I just went solo. Took me about 2 hours to make a working build, I hope it works for you too.

Good post Kassad, although dont you think that Dodge would work better in place of escape? Dodge gives you greater run speed.
I could switch my secondary to Mesmer...which I should, but i dont want to waste any more money/skillpoints buying skills (saving up for Marhans Grotto Druid set.)
What build would you suggest for a Ranger/Elementalist run?

It last for about 10-12 seconds, + Storm Chaser, 30 seconds of running and 15 seconds of jogging... if you take your time and stop in-between mobs for dodge to recharge, then yes it should work. I just use escape because with storm chaser its an unlimited 25% increase in running.
For Ranger/Ele, all I can think of instead of mantra of frost is armour of earth or some kind of Glyph of Renewal + Swirling Aura combo, not sure how it would work, instead of a bow attack, Glyph, and instead of Mantra, try Aura. Im not sure if it would work, only thing that I think could work that came to mind.

Excellent Build works flawlessly for me.
I agree with keeping escape, it gives 75% evasion which i also found helpful for killing the mountain trolls / avicara braves that got in the way.

I am having trouble getting the ice imps to use their wands only and not ice spears. They kill me with their ice spears. Any tips??

Distracting shot...

lol, i got to the cave and found that i didnt have a long range bow with me XD
but i managed to kill about 10 imps, no ids, but the build seems great. i just need that longbow that i have in storage...
also, i used dodge instead of escape, since i havent capped it yet. i didnt have any problems running there.

Well with mantra of frost up, their wand attacks should be only doing 1-3 damage. Just use distracting shot on their spears.
mantisman
Whenever I try to run past imps and golems, they slow me down and kill me,how do I get past them?
Murder In China
You kill them.
mantisman
There's always birds right near them so i'd have to fight a big group
Barinthus
Whee definitely will give this a shot with my R/Me

My build is similar, it goes like this...
Poison Arrow*
Distracting Shot
Dodge
Storm Chaser
Troll Unguent
Whirling Defense
Dryder's Defenses
Throw Dirt
All you need to kill those pesky mountain trolls is Whirling Defense, the Imps wand them to death. Throw Dirt and Poison Arrow make up for it if that doesnt work. Escape is overkill, Dodge and Stormchaser are enough.
Sometimes there's an Ele boss in the way that uses Iron Mist, you can sometimes get past him if you use Mantra of Frost (since you'll be taking 0 to 1 damage from attacks) but usually the guiles and wise will kill you. There is an alternate path that goes through the Tundra Giants that is longer but easier.

lol, i first imp i killed dropped a firey dragon sword. i saw the dragon sword part, and i was like sweet! an ids! lol. Somehow stay on a little up-hill, so you gain range and the imps have good range too, they will run towards you and start wanding. There might be 1-2 imps that get aggroed, but the rest will stay back at range.

Thank you, Kassad. I decided to take a break from my invinci-monk soloing of this area (which had gotten me nothing) to let my ranger have some quality time, and I got one on my second run! My first run had to be aborted because there was a mob with Wise, Guile and Ardent mixed in with the imps at the mouth of the cave, and I couldn't take out the Ardent with his Shield of Judgment while also dealing with the Wise and Guiles.
I'm finding the Azure Shadows and their Signet of Judgement to be a real pain, and firing uphill diminishes my range. Anyone else having trouble with these guys?

I am, so I just dont bother with them. They never drop anything good anyway lol.

Very nice build. Just one question though, wouldn't it be better if you use frostbound armor rather than druids? +30 Armor Vs the Cold attacks seems pretty useful to me.

I did it in frostbound. I was a bit concerned about energy, but needn't have been - you get 1 energy for every hit with mantra of frost up, and I never got anywhere close to bottoming out. So yeah - fur if you got it.
Maiyn
elemental resistance is better than mantra of frost. I'd sub that.
Good build though, I love to see the rangers farmin I like rangers.

Good build though, I love to see the rangers farmin I like rangers. Hardly any difference, only that with mantra of frost you have unlimited energy.

I just got done trying this build for like the 19th time..im loosing my mind... I cannot get passed ANY OF MY FIRST ICE GOLEM ENCOUNTERS usually this is just passed the second bride.. even if i do get by them.. i will still have my dodge or storm chaser interupted by heritics and as far as i know there is no way i can kill 7 enimies by myself with that skillset.. the frost mantra or whatever its called.. ya that .. it dosent work.. i still take a TON of damage from the ice golems.. if you could gimme some pointers maybee.. cause damn.. i would really like to AT LEAST make it to the cave to get my ass kicked..or the first portal for that matter

u should be able to make it far enough in Tasca's so that if u die u will rez at the shrine right next to the tele to Springs... as soon as u rez throw up Dodge and u should be able to make it with no trouble since the monsters can't attack u for like 5 sec
fallot
I've cleared out the cave 4 times now with no success. I dont bother with the Ice Beast, does it drop an IDS too ?
Candy Canes make this so much easier Anarion Silverhand
Is mantra of frost better than elemental resistance? I've seen ER instead of Mantra in some Warrior builds.
EDIT: nevermind I didn't read the above posts before i posted. David Lionmaster
i have another idea for a R/Mo build.
bring barrage, live vicariously, and vigerous spirit, along with dodge and storm chaser, and a couple of other things. if you make it so those to enchants give about 10 hp per hit, and with barrage you'll be gaining about 100 hp per hit. how would this work, i think ill try it today. carnivore

You could bring barage if you wanted with this build and still not have a problem staying alive, its just poisoning each ice imps is easier and it works with low marksminship. and i finally read that whole "keep the imps out of your agro bubble part" and it worked. http://img346.imageshack.us/img346/9743/gw0255gc.jpg those imps were actually way back in the cave but i pulled them so we would be on level ground and i would get proper distance. the fiery dragon sword dropped first, and of course i thought it was a IDS. Then i got into some trouble with the imps and 2 of em got in range for ice spear spamming. managed to kill them but i died. I actually didnt even realize the IDS had dropped until i ran back to the cave and saw it. Scrolled later to see that the words actually came up. David Lionmaster

I'm using a different mask in the photo. Health was more useful than the Sup Expertise against the imps. Lot of work. But very fun and nice reward. And yes, candy canes ftw. Asrial
