Candy Canes
Dixie Wrecked2
If you haven't noticed, and I'm sure you have, the last couple of days people have been going crazy for Winter items, mostly the special weapons and candy cane shards. What I haven't been able to understand, is why people are paying so much money for these things. They're so simple to acquire, and don't take much time at all to find. I've made over 25,000 in 2 days of playing from selling candy cane shards alone. People are buying them for 500-1000. I havent been on in 2 days, so im sure the price is much lower now, if they're still even being sold.
Another thing I havent come to understand is why people arent going crazy for Candy Canes. A candy cane removes your death penalty while in battle. I dont know about you, but when I'm in the UW or FoW and we accidently attack too many guys, me, as well as my teammates will end up with a 30%+ death penalty. Eating a candy cane would erase that, and that helps a lot. I'm not sure, but im forcasting that the price of a candy cane will increase greatly in the next couple of weeks/months. Hold on to them now, i bet you'll be able to get 100g a piece for these later in the game. I've managed to get about 250+ of them so far, just from killing gargoyles and grawl outside of sardelac and Surmia. 100g might not seem like a lot to some people, but for someone like me w/ only 45,000g in storage, its a lot.
So save your candy canes. I think they'll be worth a lot in the future!

what if they decide to remove the "remove dp" effect after winterday?
-Loki-
They won't. It's the point of the item. It's like removing the ability of eggnog to make your vision wobbly. It's not useable in PvP, so it's not a balance issue. The effect will stay.
Wasteland Squidget
Hopefully not - because it makes already easy PvE that much easier. Some of my most entertaining experiences in PvE were when myself or my party were heavily DPed and had to get extremely tactical in taking down the large groups of mobs.
Vaga
Yeah it is pretty stupid that they made PvE even easier. Whats the point of calling it a "penalty" if many players will never experience this disadvantage again. They could re-name it to the "haha you missed out on the winter event" effect.

You know what's reaaaally nice?
Making 180k off of this update, <3 @ having multiple accounts & 2 being in euro servers:
'WTS Candy Cane Weapons [sword, axe, wand, staff, hammer, bow!] Whisper me!'
-ten thousand whispers later- *grins at storage stuffed with gold*
greatest thing was I gunna sell for ~10k each, but people we're offering 30 and so on, sold a set for my friend and made him 175k. woo.

And they are self-use only , apparently.
It's probably most useful for warriors and elementalists who need a large pool of health or energy, and where even -15% DP is detrimental. In other instances, unless your DP is really bad, the Candy Canes would be wasted.

Yes I realize PvE isnt that difficult, but in certain situations, like in FoW or the UW, DP can make gameplay slow down a lot. I'll be selling these later on, you'll see. I bet ill make 25,000+ off of 250 canes.

well, I must have killed 1000 monsters w/o a cc shard drop, so i gave up and bought all mine, if that answers your initial question.
secondly, people are farming the f*** out of candy canes, and they are already worth 100 at the very least.

I killed Charr for maybe an hour, and Got ~12 Shards. Used all the Charr carvings on gifts, and got ~4 shards from the gifts..
And I consider my runs alittle unlucky at some points..
Sereng Amaranth
FYI...outside surmia is the best place for shards and items that wintersday collectors want
eom
ok, probably wasn't 1000.
killed big packs of grawl 3 times outside sardelac, then a bunch of stone elementals after the grawl stopped spawning.
went to piken and chewed up a few screens of charr to althea's ashes.
not one drop.
28 carvings, though.
opened about a dozen gifts w/no shards.

Ok, I'll admit it, I'm one of those ignorant people who hasn't played Guild Wars for months and needs to be told how the snowman quest works. I also have no idea about how to aquire candy cane shards. I have searched the wonderful internet a few times, but have failed to find anything to aid me. Can anyone assist me?
Mo/R9
Oops. Dunno how I missed that, thanks.

well they are already going for 100g+.. If I manage to get some I wont even look to use them before the expansion.. I might need them at that time for that new beacons - droks kind run or may be new areas like UW, FoW or SF
lg5000
They make a nice addition to my monk's inventory
Yichi
been farming these a lot over wintersday. I have almost a whole 10 slot bag full of stacks of 250 of these. i got one more to go they come in handy for idiot pugs in places liek THK or Fissure....

Well I have to say it's, unfortunately, already beginning. I was in a FoW group last night, some of us died and were res'd. Somewhere along the way I (or someone) talked about the candy canes removing DP.
Now instead of being a decent team player, helping the team become more effective again/remove the DP, one guy decides so kindly to offer candy canes for 250g. Sigh. Ok it's peanuts given the area, but still, how incredibly selfish. I didn't have any on me at the time, but I didn't pay for it for want of not encouraging this lameness. It sits right up there with people trying to scam others to continue missions or monks who won't heal unless paid. I really hope this doesn't continue, I know people are greedy selfish sob's but that took the biscuit.

i was doing a fow run the other day after they came out. we had this HORRID necro that just did nothign but be an aggro monkey and died a lot. I gave him a whole stack of them and said here, youll need these.
I always carry them with me now as they can be very useful. the hint is to not use them al lthe time. only use them when you have 30% or more dp as 15% isnt all that harming to you. it is a setback, but not life threatening.

i got like 50 candy canes from farming in ascalon for the grawl necklaces and gargoyle skulls from the presents maybe later that day still had them went to uw with some guildies and some other people we almost cleared out like 99% of uw before one of us had to go (i love candy canes) whenever one of us died didn't use any until we got to 60% dp then we got rid of about half with candy canes and then worked the other part off they are good so in uw, fow, and sf i ain't greedy specially if it can get me the drops it did in uw my group got like almost 2-3 ectos each throughout hte whole area and the gold alone was good like 1k in gold and then the items brought in another 2-3k but ya the candy canes are good for when you got like 45-60% dp never use them if you have less just my thought for em
Lashyr
Razorback fossil use punctuation marks, thats what they are for.
I usually farm outside Bergen Hotsprings in Nebo Terrace and the Cursed Lands. I farm for Decayed Orr Emblems which are 3 for one winteritem. It takes some time but the udead are fun to kill, better than charrs, and sometimes even dorp other nice things.

Sir Skullcrasher
I got 101 and still counting... should i stock up on eggnogs too?
Jade
I'm trying to stock up on at least 250 spiked eggnog so I can throw one hella big New Years bash. I should be able to keep most people happy with 250, don't you think? That and I want to see if I can drink enough to make my monk pass out.
Total Disfunction
There is an Item you can trade 2 of for 1 winter item and I get 20 a run!
Zehnchu
I just managed to get 250 candy canes, going to stock up some more for later.
nirhan shadowmauler
if spiked eggnog is like dwarven ale i dunno. i drank about 100 once on my warrior and all it did was really RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO up my monitor for an hour.
Mo/R9
Hey guys, just wondering, have the shards stopped dropping? I've been killing stuff in all of the places (cleared an entire zone of charr and grawl) that people have said they drop frequently in, yet I have received nothing for my effort, not a single shard has dropped. If anyone could spare a few shards for a wand to go with my gingerbread focus, I'd really appreciate it.

yep get about 13 skulls(13 candy canes) and 2-3 shards per run.
Kais Unduli
There are a few in my guild that are stockpiling candy canes in anticipation of the price going up. I've got enough for myself, mostly for fissure/UW runs, or when I go henching to skill cap.
And yes, I feel bad for anyone who misses out on these candy canes. But their loss will be someone elses gain.

Working on my second stack of 250, although I cant see myself using them that often. Probably sell them when the price hits around say... 2k ?
Lord Iowerth
I've always found gargoyle runs outside Nolani Academy to be the best, since the collector only takes 1 skull per item in Ascalon, and that is a good ratio
I take my ranger, and it is really quite fun ... EoE bombing FTW!
Ranger/Mo:
Barrage
Dodge
Whirling Defense
Lightning Reflexes
Storm Chaser
Edge of Extinction
Troll Unguent
Holy Veil
Attribs are something like:
Marks (whatever is required for your bow) mine is 10
BM 8 (i switch to a +4 superior BM mask to cast spirit, then switch back)
Wilderness 10+
Expertise 10+
(sorry I don't have exact build, i'm at work! )
Basically I do two groups, the ones at the bottom of the first stairs and the little boss that's there, then move on to the ones to the north. You want to spam troll unguent (as surprisingly enough, the short conjure phantasms will wear away at you after a while), dodge when you're not burdened to move a bit faster, and once you get a group balled up nice and close, I throw on the BM mask, cast EoE, then switch back to my marks. mask and barrage the closest, clustered group ... once you kill 4 or 5 (usually 2 or 3 shots at most with barrage) the rest just domino and die.
Average 3-4 candy cane shards a run, 16-25 skulls a run, with the average run taking in the 3-5 minute range.
And yes, to someone's post a few back: candy canes are *very* useful in the UW and FoW when you have a crummy PUG ... plus they give you minty fresh breath

One thing that bothers me about EoE though, if it kills gargoyles that you havent aggroed they wont drop anything.
