OK, I just did an IDS run with 3 other warriors. 2 of the other warriors were trying to use a build that they had never used before (Will call them Tank1 and Tank2). The other was a competent warrior and was apparently at least using a build he knew (Tank3).
We start of by running all the way to the cave. Tank1 dies once along the way (at the giants). No biggie, happens to even the best warriors.
We get in the cave and I use my bow to pull a small group of Imps away from the large group. I call the target once they get a ways away from the herd and we all run in. Things were going fine till all of the sudden EVERYTHING gets aggroed. We all die. Back at the spawn point I asked who aggroed and Tank1 says it was him. Once again, not that big of deal. You can't exactly move very fast to run away when you are frozen in place.
We get back to the cave and Tank1 and Tank2 die almost immediately. Neither Tank3 or myself brought a rez. But since we were right in the middle of a big group we kept fighting. During the fight an IDS drops for Tank1. By the time the fighting was over it was no longer assigned to him, so I picked it up.
Now I'm not sure if I should give it to him or not. As I said he was absolutely NO help whatsoever during the entire trip. If he and Tank2 hadn't been there then the drop would have either went to Tank3 or myself anyway.
Anyway, my question is this: What should I do? Should I give it back, or keep it and just be happy? Thanks for your thoughts.

Give it to him, its his drop regardless of whether you think he helped or not. He was in the group, He gets his cut.

Ask Tank 3 what he thinks, if he doesn't give you an opinion then keep the sword and put Tank 1 on ignore list.

If it was actually a good sword, you should've kept it. But since it's totally useless, give it to him.

To be honest I would just give it back. It was his drop and he should have it. If he was a real asshole to you though I'd keep it for myself. But looks to me he was just a newbie who didn't know what to do, and just wanted an IDS. At least he tried and you never said he pissed you off or ruined the entire run. So I would just give it back, it's just fair.

well just my two cents

I say keep it, it he wasn't so busy aggroing everything in sight and can't pay attention to his drops he deserves it. I have been in groups where members died and everyone called their drops based on the conversation menu, because we were paying attention.

I agree with most here: if he wasn't being a real jerk, give it to him. This is equivalent (although on a much lesser scale) to someone getting an Ecto drop in the underworld, who died defeating monsters so you could live, and you not rezzing him/her until the drop was yours.

Naturally, your actions are far less insidious, but same reaction.

The trump card: if he was being a jerk, tell him off and keep it. It never pays to be nice to a jerk, that gives them the idea that acting that way is OK.

I think I will give it back. Just because he wasn't rude even when I didn't give it to him. Thanks for everyone's opinions.

Irrelevant. If the OP died instead of the tank it'd become HIS sword. If it were indeed "his sword" then why didn't he pick it up? He died, why did he die?

Keep the Precious...
Or be a good boy and give it back to him.

If I were you and you were I, then I would give it back to him and you would say you would give it back to him too because you were I and I were you.

Just give it back to him

Give him his sword, you will feel better about yourself if you do. Besides, its not like you cant get one for youself. I suggest doing it solo to avoid things like that.

wow i can't believe so many of you are so willing to shaft Tank1 just because he's a stranger. This is why so many people are jerks - Internet anonymity.

Golden Rule, people, Golden Rule. Treat others the way you want to be treated. Simple like that.

I don't care if Tank1 is a completely noob stranger or your best friend, his drops go to him, period. Useless piece of junk or Icy Dragon Sword - I don't care. If it dropped for him, it's his regardless if it eventually became unassigned.

The only exception is if he quit the group and doesn't bother to contact you or someone else (sometimes players are forced to quit due to internet issues).

Note: "You" isn't directed at reboot - just commenting off his post and talking to the reader of this post

Ah if people jumped off a bridge, you would do the same?

Same concept.

In fact if people act like a jerk because "the other guy would do this to me anyway" this only encourages more people to be jerks which feeds the spiraling cycle.

Don't be part of the problem. Keep in mind the Golden Rule and act accordingly. You'd be surprised - some people do notice and change their behavior more positively.

I should know - I was one of those players who noticed some players being selfless and so on which inspired me to be the same best as I can.

Sigh, you treat others nicely, you get shafted by others.

You reason with them, they say "Your mom", like it even means anything.

Keep the sword. Like I said, he didn't pick it up, it is not any fault of yours that he died.

I'd keep it like the evil bastard that I am. However, I'd offer to go on runs with him and if one drops for me, give it to him.

But the morally right thing to do is give it back as he was unable to obtain the item during his set period time it was reserved for him. If he was able and didn't, it's yours.

If you want to screw someone over, there are plenty of volunteers. Screw over the guy selling weapons in the Tombs. or the guy trying to sell black dye for 10k, or the guy that is ripping off newbs in Ascalon.

If you screw over the guy that agreed to go farming with you, then you are not a good farming partner, and I would never farm with you. I seriously doubt anyof the people telling you to keep the sword would farm with you, if they thought about it.

There may be a lot of internet security in knowing that you will never meet someone again, but it does not mean that you have the right, to be a complete dick.

It was assigned to him, give him the sword. Don't you think might be overestimating his crapness to justify you keeping the sword?

At any rate, when i play people always keep whatever drops for them.

What if you are in a group, and nobody dies. Say, a black dye drops in the middle of the battle. Now, everyone is alive and can see the drop, and someone is excited about seeing on drop and then another person congratulates them on the good drop. Then a few minutes later, they remind the person to pick it up.

When the time comes and its available for everyone, is it fair game?

Are you serious? If you stole my drop and then made this offer, I’d tell you to stuff it.

If you think you’re being so generous by offering to help him get one, just give it back and get one for yourself.

At least you wouldn’t be stuck adventuring with an aggro junkie like him.

I completely agree here. The fact that you even posted here to ask should be all the indication you need. Give it back. Half the problem with GW is the community. Keep it a friendly place, spread a smile, we can only hope one good deed leads to another.
Please Don't listen to Yogi's Pain...ignore list...people like that ruin GW..IMHO
