Because each rank add 1-2 points dmg more, it doesn't matter much. You can easily get rank 6 if you have non NF character, so this will be ok.
Who knows... Dot'n know if is there any mechanism, but my last 11 smite runs give me only 1 ecto. And must say I do this runs with unequal(?)...
