Best pet class

I guess to compare, I was looking for aclass similar to that of a mage or necro in EQ. The ranger would be it?

So rangers only get perm pets? I have a necro and the pets do not last long at all.

I am currently playing the free trial, and wanted to know which class is best for pets. Thanks!
