You can also unlock skills (regular and elite) using faction, and then use a tome to learn it on your pve character.

The dye drops didn't go into effect until today, so I'd say the first one was coincidence.

Definitely take Vampiric Gaze to help deal damage and to finish him off. Also, you can use a wand if you want, but the +5 energy and 20% longer...
