I think they only use it on themselves if they are wielding a martial weapon(ie what you said you had equipped + bow + scythe + daggers).

Hell I use Mimicry almost everytime I heal with a full human team. Hb + Mimicry + UA ally = 202 heal party + 1160 infuse.
