Dune Burrowers in Elona reach give sometimes good gold drops.

Go to Elona mission and kill all eight Dune Burrowers. I got some good gold drops from them.

Try to go sword instead of an axe. I was playing with that and you can easily take an ettin down in a few seconds using artery-gash-final thrust....
