Well to really see the effects of good/bad updates we need to look at a lot of factors, since there is not a fee, many may not be apparrent untill chapter 3.
How many are buying the current CE?
When paid bonus items (ie extra charater slots, promotional items) are available, how many people are buying them? This should be the benchmark. If I really like the game I may pay for more slots, Coke promos, Japan promos, new faces. The problem with GW is that they have no real way to measure customer satisfaction. Forums like this only measure the percentage of people that regularly post, that can be extrapilated into a general measure, but it is not accurate.
For instance I'm not particularly happy with the state of the game, things are starting to get on my nerves, as such when extra slots are available, I'm going to buy only one, down from the 3 or more that I was planing. And when chapter 3 comes out I am only going to get the SE and only buy the slots necessary to play the new professions and a mesmer, which is down again.
This armor update is a factor, not the boots but the general reconstruction of damage reduction, but there are other things. Limited character customization is the major factor. Lack of easy selling, I find it much easier to merch or give away high end items than try to sell them. Inablilty to kick a problem player. High degree of failure when discontecs or rage quits occur.
These are things factor into my decision to conitue to do buisness with GW, Area Net and NC Soft as a whole.

chapter 3 will include the slots for the new professions same as chapter 2.
the pay slots are totally separate from the chapters and are only for those who want more slots for whatever reason.

The 2 New professions, which will probably be included (but you never know), and purchase slot for a mesmer, which will complete my profession line up, assuming it hapens at all. Which is down from the "I really enjoying the game, I'm buying even more for gender alternates to the characters that I already have", if I don't really enjoy the game it will just be the mesmer.
For instance I have a female warior, I like swords with her, but I have a few good axes. There's one slot I'm not going to buy.
I was going to get a permanent presear character again, but I don't really know anyone in presear any way, so there is no point in doing that. There is another slot I'm not going to buy.
Since I'm not going to do a presear, my mule account does not need a shuttle to transport all the runes and dyes that you accumulate in pre. That's 3.
I have a few really good green bows drop recently, I was considering making a male ranger. Fourth slot, I'm not going to get.
Do I really want a female heroine wraith sin. Fifth slot, gone.
I haven't really played my male monk, so no need for a cute female monk. Sixth slot, not going to happen.
That's $60. Now A-net has a monetary measure of my dissapoinment.

Firstly I would just like to say that the armour was ALWAYS BUGGED. It was NOT suppose to be that way, now Anet has fixed it. And warriors were NOT the only class that were affected, mesmers no longer can do the armour mixing either.
Secondly, the vs. physical change - it only counts per attack. Some of the greatest damage spells elementalists have are just that, a SINGLE SPELL, and the vast majority of them are NOT spammable. So now warriors have 96 AL instead of 99 AL against elemental damage. So what? Certainly against a bunch of casters you are going to have to work a little harder to stay alive, but it isn't going to break your game, just like no longer being able to wander round in mixed armour on my mesmer isn't going to break my game.
You all sit there crying, zomg Anet broke the game, I can't tank anymore, wha, wha, wha. Even with greater conflagration and winter you STILL have more armour against damage than any other character in the game.
Ele max: 80
Rit max: 75
Necro max: 75
Mesmer max: 60 (without skills)
Monk max: 70
Assassin max: 70 (unsure)
Ranger max: 90
Warrior max: 96 (without skills!)
My logical conclusion is that you need to adapt and get over it. Anet has NOT broken the game. You will probably still be able to play with the same skill setup. You still have the highest AL. You can still tank.
Anet is trying to balance the game. While I can say that I'm a little confused as to where this particular change came from, I think it would be fair to say that it isn't likely to change the game any large amount.

True, 80, 90 or 100 all is still high
Good thing my ranger now carries Greater conflig, changing all physical damage to elemental.
Flare, stoning and icespear has 1 second cast and no recharge, with ele attunement and a fast cast weapon, thats spamable.
I already have a few warrior builds in mind to overcome the lack of ele armor, Thats not the point, a ele weapon mod makes all damage ele damage. There so many ways to make something not physical damge that it isn't even funny.

$60 that they surely expected you to spend.
Oh, and I suppose you would all be whining if they decided to add -5 global damage to Sentinel's armor? You know, you'd have to spend all that money and materials crafting new armor - man, what a waste, huh?

Let me sum up my previous post about extra slots
1. assassin:will be male, still on
2. presear: out
3. presear shuttle: out
4. Mesmer probably for chapter 3: still on, but confirmed for chapter 3
The above were for sure, the below were just musing, but I was plannig on following through. 5 & 6 could go in the catagory of sour grapes. So you could say that they nerfed themselves out of $20 for sure with a potential loss of $60.
5. Do all the Catha primary skill quests, like the panda: out
6+. male/female counter parts for my current characters, except male necro and male rit: out
Is this just because of the knight's armor, no, the sheild to some extent, the dammage rewrite didn't help. But generally I am slowly become disappointed in the actions and decisions of A-net.

Just a couple of notes, the AL I listed in my post where when winter and greater con. were up and active.
Flare, stoning, icespear, shock arrorw, all spammable skills, yes. Over time they will cause some small problems for a warrior, with all those -3s stacking. However while ele's do run around spamming some of these skills during the downtime of their other skills, these skills alone are NOT match winners. The small amount of damage they do is EASILY healed. Against a spike you won't stand a chance, true. But you didn't stand a chance against spike before the update anyway.
Dark damage, light damage, chaos damage are all armour ignoring.
Mesmers wield chaos weapons.
Necros wield dark or cold weapons.
Ritualists wield dark or cold or shock weapons.
Monks wield fire or light weapons.
So it would probably be fair to say that 50% of the caster population had armour ignoring weapons in the first place.
True, now rangers and warriors will run around with ele weapons. But still, assuming all damage is now ele damage, warriors have 96AL (assuming glads) against all attacks.
My point is this, if you can manage to deal with a slight (and it IS slight) reduction in armour, then perhaps you should be looking at how you play the game in the first place.
Do you rush?
Not wait for regen?
Shout heal me/res me?
Think the monk is there to heal you and only you?
Sometimes I think the biggest improvement Anet could possibly make would be the update where they changed the attitude of a goodly proportion of the GW population. It's a game people. We are here to play by Anet's rules. Adapt and enjoy it.

So, who's first? I can get take pre-orders hehe
p.s. and before someone comes along to nitpick about wording, it's the idea that counts...

When people so vigorously make it a point to exploit* a questionable and predominate feature for all it's worth, no longer how long the game company takes to fix it, one shouldn't be surprised when that feature finally is changed.
If you put all your money on a single pair of boots that give you a global reduction of damage, having monsters not bat an eyelash at you raining meteors and hellfire on them, or being able to make a massive army of undead minions without breaking a sweat then sure, you deserve to get burnt.
*Many of you may think that it's not an exploit, that it's a "strategy". In most instances I'm willing to meet peiople halfway on that point. However, if you put so much time in effort into only one way of playing and any shift in the status quo bothers you so greatly that it makes the game unplayable for you and causes you to rush to the forums, then allow me to play the world's smallest violin for you. I also have some tissues.

Hmmm... Guild Wars = Game, Car (assuming you have one) = Real Life.
I spent $60 on a game, which I play to have fun. If I have to change some things around ever now and then, big deal.
If I spent $100,000+ on a car to have someone steal/vandalise/crash it, that is what insurance is for.
If instead I go broke and have to sell off my nice ferrari, then that's life and I would have NO CHOICE but to adapt.
You can make whatever analogies you want in this argument, it doesn't change the fact that it is 1) a game, and 2) such a small change.
People will have to spend, what 15k for that new piece of armour to match the rest of it, maybe 3k for a super rune (if you had one on there) - noting that not many people put super vigor on boots/helms.
This is NOT going to change the price of shields, since they were all modded. So you haven't wasted any GAME money on that account.

Ah, didn't take long to bring that up. The point I was trying to make was it's still your time and effort which has been wasted and ending up with something not as originally advertised. It's a product regardless if it's a game or a car.
Well obviously several of you didn't spend ages pre-Factions to get hold of a sup abs rune and/or decent damage reduction shield (which topped 100k for months) Because, you know, obviously those were exploits and not working as advertised...
Locational armour - I agree, that was broken and needed a fix, even if it did take way too long to fix it.
Changing runes/shields - Not a fix. That's changing something after many people spent a lot of hard earned plat to obtain.
Lesson learned: don't bother spending time and effort on anything like this in future, because you might end up with something changed to no longer be what was originally advertised.
If some people still can't understand why others might be pissed about this, then I'd like to extend an offer of two Ferraris, which will then be changed to Fords later. Payment up front, no refunds.

The point is, if there are much more of those people who ragequits, will ANET have enough money to implement improved storage? So, before a patch is implemented, it need to be thoughtout more carefully. Is it fixing major problem? If it is then of course implement it. If its not a major problem, will it pleases people more or piss people off more. And so on...

Yes, they will leave which means that their will be less server loads, more room. These people will also not buy the beloved future chapters; no big deal you say people will always continue to buy GW. So what happens when im shopping for a game and see someone looking at GW? I will tell them from experiance wht the game is like and they may or may not buy it. No big deal. Now what will happen if everyone who chooses to leave does this? How long will GW last with ppl not buying future chapters? Sure there will be alot less server load; before too long there will be so little that it becomes not profitable to run those servers. Exactly how loyal to you do you think A-net will be to you, the same one that said "Get over it or leave"? Do you honestly think that the second they stop turning a profit from chapter sales they will just "Get over it".. I dont, I think they will choose the leave option too. Just my 2cents. |

You've gone into another debate there re: software EULAs, where, just because it's there does not make it morally right. Would most other industries be able to get away with that kind of announcement? Chances are, probably not. According to that logic, how about this forum just not bother having any discussion or suggestions or anything at all. After all, it's not even your game and you have ZERO input to it legally. You just pay for the license to use it. As a consumer you count for nothing.
I can only hope you don't end up in some situation where you've invested your time and effort in something that was supposed to be fun, only to feel like it's been wasted and end up feeling like it's not so fun. Actually no, I'd hope you don't have other people making snide unsympathetic remarks about it.
Right, enough input from me. Seen this happen before in many other products and they all went the same way...

Let me just start off by saying, I just started playing the warrior about two weeks ago. I bought knight's boots, and shelled out some dough for a Merki's Gaze (-2 while enchanted) and a Superior Absorbtion a few days before the update. I'm not necessarily rich (most I ever had at one time was 75k), so all that was quite a hit to my storage.
Am I upset about the 'nerf'? Yes and no. The knights armor global damage thing I knew would get fixed eventually, so I'm not even concerned, I saw it coming. I am a little upset over the damage absorbtion change, since it seemed to come out of nowhere, but I'll get over it.
There may be a few people saying "deal with it", but I think the best advice is simply "adapt". I see nothing wrong with Anet mixing it up from time to time to keep things interesting and causing us to think out of our ruts. When we get used to something, getting bored of it soon follows.
I am going to chuck myself into the group that complains about them only fixing some things, but not others. Taking the nolani wand and rockmolder down is fine, but why not the FFS, too? That part is a bit messed up.
I feel bad for all those (like me) who lost money in this deal, definately moreso for those who worked hard to get their 15k/Luxon/Kurzick/FoW armor, only for this update to make it useless. There's not really anything that can be done for those individuals, so in this case, I hate to say it but, "deal with it".

Armor can be repurchased, characters can be reimagined.
Warriors are still playable.
It's not like Anet released a patch that deleted everything you unlocked for PvP or rolled back all the progress your characters have made in PvE.
Yeah, it really sucks, but it's not the end of the world.
I don't believe everything Anet does is right or even for a good reason. But neither do I think Anet has a lottery to see which Profession they're going to mess with next patch for the explicit purpose of pissing off the fans.

And to say that people who keep just shouting "stop whining" and "deal with it" are just insecure retards who are only posting for their own ego boost is being accurate. |
By the way, no one has answered me - would all of you be whining about lost money if they suddenly buffed Sentinel's Armor with a global -5 damage mod? Oh, all of you poor people who just spent money on 15k Kurzick's, boohoohoo - OH NOES I MUST BUY NEW ARMOR AND RUNES YOU CHANGED THE GAME! You all know you wouldn't whine in that situation. So, sorry, but that argument sucks.

There was a patch in which hex shields are buffed...and there were whiners saying that their existing shield is now worthless.
With buffs at least the character can get stronger with the extra effort. Nerfs on the other hand....you spend extra effort to get the same results as before, making people wonder, why do I have to do this?

Are we happy about the changes, NO! Do we have the right to say something/complain/whine, last time I checked the EULA didn't take away my right to, I may not have any legal standing to effect change but we can still say something.
At this point I am in the adapt camp, but A-net stil needs to start looking at the effects of their nerf. How many adapt will we as a consumer accept and how many leaves before the game is no longer sustainable.
If anything I think it is time that A-net started to say why this nerf was necessary, and why that buff needed to be done.

I feel bad for the people who shelled out 100k for their Superior Absorption runes back in the day. This nerf hit them and any unfortunate souls with Ascalon FoW armor the hardest.
But this change is here to stay. Whether you agree with it or not, the nerf of the global -2 bonus on knight's/ascalon armor makes sense, and is in keeping with the stat bonuses granted by all the other armors in the game. The nerf of warrior damage absorption in general is more questionable, but if you're getting hit by Rodgort's Invocation or similar, whether you take 117 damage or 120 damage makes even less of a difference than whether or not you use a Superior Vigor or Major Vigor rune.
My condolances to all the 15k Ascalon and Ascalon FoW owners in the audience.
