We knew it would be out before the end of the year since last year.

After all, the Dervish is a wammo which there are way too many of now. Sorry to bring down the tone but I don't want any more classes >_< |
It just provides more options and diversity for gamers. I love the idea of both of these classes. It's my hope that one time soon 2 monks in a group might be more optional. I'm very interested to see how they will make paragon angelic in nature.
And that wammo comment, to be honest after factions came out there is a huge drop, and even the number of sins out there has dropped when people who aren't good with sins and rits and move onto the classics.
How I see it is the 6 core professions will be for more beginner gamers (except Mesmers, who are just brilliant) and then each new profession will be more technical in nature.

You have to wonder if it's a good idea to put a class which has Commander and "become a God" in the description. Aside from the (probably few) tactically minded players, who do you think that's going to attract?
"ZOMG!!! IA M TEH COMMANDER GOD!!!11 ALL BOW DONE 2 ME!!! I WALL DRAW ON TEH MAP!!!!1" I really hope I'm proven wrong
Unrelated topic: if it's the same merge thing as Factions then it will be a total of 4 slots given up, so you can have your Tyrian characters there (which probably aren't used much in Tyria anymore anyway) Whole game's worth of slots, if you bought Factions and merged there too...

I can see it now, there will be about 500 Dervish farming builds out when nightfall is released.

Going to wait to see what the news is on slots for this one, or if you'll be "compelled" to spend even more for a chapter that has the same artificial restraints and limitations as Factions.
Incidently, apparently the new characters that are added in chapters won't be supported with new skills in future, unlike the core classes. You get them for that chapter and that's it, nothing more for them in future. That's what's been suggested to me by a tester anyway, I can't find any official statements to that effect.

I read the whole of this thread today and it's interesting to watch how it developed. The first pages up to about page 10 were all happy, yay posts. Now, from around page 13, I saw a rising number of pessimists and people poking holes in the game.
End of thread philosophy.
Well guys, the way I see it is this. The chapters will each cater to different tastes, you'll always have the hardcore players (or the "can't get enough of GW even though I only have 2 level 20 characters" *cough* players) which will buy all the chapters, however some won't appeal to everyone.
I noticed a lot of people didn't like Factions, saying it was too short, they didn't like how things were implimented, too many fedex quests etc, but I am enjoying factions, simply because unlike prophecies, I can grab a few henchies (btw anet, props on the large variety of henchies) and go out, do a few "fedex quests" and just look around at the scenery without thinking "now which of these 8 quest objectives do I do next so that I don't trigger the 8 mobs of ettins spawning on top of me?" When I feel like some action however, I take a trip to Tyria and do some more intense stuff there.
If you are a player that lives for PvE puzzles and action, only buy the chapters with the PvE orientation that have the interesting content (wait for the hardcore players to buy it first and read their opinions).
If you are a hardcore PvPer, buy chapters with a lot of PvP.
Factions, IMHO, was a game for people that like simple quests in between action (from prophecies) and were looking for a new style of PvP which blends the PvE and PvP worlds.
You don't need to buy all the chapters guys, just buy the ones that interest you the most after reading about them on forums and review sites.
EDIT: Darnit, I went off into an explanation about Factions and forgot to write about nightfall. Editing now to stay on topic.
EDIT2: Nightfall Stuff
Nightfall. An interesting name. These professions sound just as interesting. When I read about the Paragon, the first thing that came into my mind was "Proximity Effects". Say you have a Paragon in your party, his highest attribute is attribute X. X is an attribute with lots of damage-enhancing skills linked to it. Because his highest attribute is attribute X, he gives a +4 damage bonus to all party members adjacent to him, a +3 damage bonus to all party members near him, a +2 damage bonus to all party members in the area and a +1 damage bonus to all party members on his radar. Anyone outside his radar gets no bonus. That's just one of my ideas.
The scythe-weilding Dervish. Well. Here we have a class with potential. I think that this guy could introduce a couple of fairly interesting moves into the game. With the whole Dervish idea, I think he'll be pretty effective at dealing with multiple foes. Perhaps skills that reqire him to be the target of a cetain number of enemies? How about "Scythe Whirl: If you have more than 4 foes attacking you, you block the next 5 attacks made against you and your attackers suffer from bleeding for 5 seconds." I also liked the idea of another poster earlier in the thread that talked about half damage to foes adjacent to your target. Very clever idea.
In short, Nightfall has the potential to be a fresh addition to the Guild Wars lineup, especially in the area of PvE.
End of thread philosophy.

omg, i've finally decided to go out and buy Factions, and now they are planning to release a NEW expansion... nice timing!
ohh well, they finally decided to include spears in the game, the one thing it was really missing, next to potions
i can only hope they wait another few months before releasing that one, so i can at least enjoy Factions a little

i just hope the scythe attack animation is a side slash rather then the same animation has a sword.. seriously, if they did that i won't even buy nightfall =/

Is it just me or that I heard "potions" around here?
I thought I am in GW's board, not WoW/Ragnarok/LineageII/you-name-it-grind-fest-with-me's boards. Bah.
Anyway, gotta love Paragon and Dervish! I'm still not too sure about which one I will play....maybe both.

I'm amazed at how Anet makes new professions out of combining aspects of the old professions. For instance, I thought a Ritualist was just a Necro/Ranger, but it turned out pretty good.

I must say I am quite baffled by this move from ANet, as this is a very interesting and unexpected choice of professions. I was so convinced that Nightfall would introduce a shapechanger and amazon/barbarian profession, especially due to the alleged African flavour of the new campaign and how well this cultural frame could hold those two professions...
But, the Paragon and Dervish are apparently, on some level, not unsimilar to the functions and skill-set of the Amazon, Barbarian and Druid from Diablo II. The Paragon will most likely inheret the spear-throwing and passive war cries of the Amazon and the rallying battlecries of the Barbarian. The Dervish seamingly will wield a two-handed war-scythe(polearm) and be a front-line fighter with shape changing powers ("becoming the living embodiment of a god"). This god could very well be an animal, or even several different kind of animals. Who knows?? I can't wait to find out more at the upcoming PvP event, that is for damn sure!
I really, really hope the artists spend more time on the model faces this time around, as I was abit dissapointed with Factions in this regard. I also hope ANet will introduce "The Bazaar" - an auction house system for GW. Most importantly, the character customisation/personalisation aspect of this Fan-frickin-tastic game is one of it's weaker points, and I pray that the designers pay even more attention to that in GW:Nightfall.
To summerize: Looks ace - can't wait!

the problem is when you have characters from previous chapters which u want to bring to the new continents
I started off with an assasin for FACTIONS only to reach the end and find that nobody wants a freakin assassin in elite missions
Now i have to start working on bringing my monk from prophecies to factions once u have done a PVE with 1 character its not fun to do it twice .So i have to waste time on bring my monk to elite missions instead of working on PVP and GVG
so with the 3rd chapter whom should i start with and in the end find out it wa snot worth it also if i have to bring all my pve charcters in chapetr 3 i have more that 5 of them to do
there should we a way to progress them faster

hi, it looks great, but i got a question:
When does this game come out?? i dont hope in like 5-8 weeks.. because factions just came out.. i hope its coming in winter or something, and do i need to buy it in the shop and add a key to my account? just like factions?, is it like factions, a upgrade on the first game?
please let me know

Hmm... I know this is a "Yea right, stop thinking too much" idea, but it actually makes sense in a strange way.
Okay, Shouts were just recently changed in a patch to "withing earshot range."
Anyone who has ever taken physics knows that sound carries further at night.
Guild Wars: Nightfall suggests that there might be a change between day/night in this installment.
Could these just be coincidences, or could Nightfall actually implement a day and night mode? If so, that would probably mean a Shout a daytime might be to adjacent allies but a Shout at nighttime could affect all nearby allies.
Just a little comment... and yes, I'm probably thinking too much.

the idea of the dervish being able to temporarily transform into some type of god is very intriguing. i hope that there are several types of gods to choose from depending on situation and intention.
think of the graphical and playable possibilities. rather than shouts or stances, the dervish could transform into gods that soak up damage, mirror elemental damage, increase the dmg output of the party, etc.... fun stuff.

it all sounds very cool and i can't wait to try both. but the sad bit is i have 6 lv 20 pve chars, all have finished factions, 2 have 15k armor and 2 have FoW.(my ranger is biting on the short end as i can't find 15k armor i like) other than that i'd love a temp slot for the weekend. i aslo think the dervish would be great alongside the warrior and assassin. three melee classes can't go wrong. on a side note this so called warrior armor "nerf" as some call it seems like it was done with the paragon in mind seeing as the mere presence of one reduces and protects from hexes and crap.

Here's a suggestion; hopefully, if Gaile stops by again she can see it.
I would love the addition of 90 new elite skills in Nightfall. However, each elite skill can only be unlocked in the primary attribute of a certain class combination. Therefore, since there is going to be 90 combinations of classes, each of these special elites can only be unlocked by 1 of the combinations.
For example, a Monk/Necromancer might have a special elite unlocked in Divine Healing, called Funeral Prayer... where if cast when an ally is dead, for the next 4-12 seconds, each Monk healing spell heals for an additional 10-45 points and costs half energy.
But a Necromancer/Monk, would have a different special elite unocked in the Necro's primary attribute.
This might bring people to using some more interesting combinations of professions instead of just sticking with basic builds such as W/Mo, W/R IWAY, Mo/Me Booner, and so on... Other examples would be a Me/E could have a spell that increases the speed of spells and causes lightning damage to adjacent foes everytime a spell is used. An A/R could have an elite that helps spam even more conditions upon each crit hit. An A/N could have an elite that helps degeneration.
On a side note, I just thought of the greatest profession combination for Nightfall...
If the Dervish really does AoE melee damage with his scythe, then a D/Me would be sick with Illusionary Weaponry... mmmm!

With regards to the whole god-transforming process... in the name of balance, there has to be a price to be paid. Before we get too excited about god-hood... consider what balancing negative there has to be as a result of doing so. Perhaps the process leaves you extremely vulnerable for a certain period of time or something...
Needs to be considered, folks...

I'm just wondering about God-hood and Arcane... I'm a god! oh wait, I'm not! wait, I'm a god again! Maybe it'll drain your energy into nothing.

hmm ionno, sounds liek overkill on the melee class : / where's the caster?...well let me refraise that, where's the SPELL casters lol, i liked the paragon idea, but it seems as though the dervish is pushing it , i mean, a warrior, with a scythe?...but then he can transform and cast stuff.....can he cook me dinner while he's at it?

Anet's losing their creativity -_-. Another monk spinoff and a paladin made into a profession. Nice.

I have this horrible feeling that there will be lots of holy damage being thrown around and my Tormentor's armor is going to get painful.

EDIT: Oh and when I went back to review what I had missed it seemed like there was a moderately sizable block of posts missing from this thread; like one or two pages of conversations. Maybe I'm dreaming, or maybe I was correct about there being a mod that hates me and keeps secretly deleting my posts O.o

Hell yes!
If there were two weapons I would've killed for in Guild Wars they would've been the spear and the scythe. I love those sorts of weapons, and the fact that both of the new classes have precisely these two weapons to wield is brilliant for me. Both classes sound very cool, and the Dervish especially for me. Not only is a scythe just plain neat, but if it's to be a melee character with some spells, well...how many meleemancers are there out there? I know personally on my necromancer I'd kill to have better melee builds. For the Dervish to come along now in Chapter 3, I'll be a pretty happy guy. Even if they suck, I'll still play them.
Good stuff, if nothing else it's good to see progress in the amount of time they set for themselves.
