I wonder if the slot actually activates before you put in the Nightfall key. If it doesn't then there is very little point in me bothering until I can get it cheap after release.

Argh, I hate when Anet does this. Too much general information and then everyone comes on the forums to put there two cents in on what "this and that" means. Gaile, if your out there please answer these three questions.
1. Does the additional slot mean players will get three with the full purchase of the game?
2. Is Anets teminology for Preorder Pack and Prerelease Pack the same thing? I assume it is but if not please explain if we have to pay full price up front or what the deal is.
3. How will the Collector's Edition be preordered? Last time around I got screwed out of my CE due to it being late and even if it wasn't I couldn't preorder the CE specifically. So even if it was out during the start date I might not have gotten it. Hopefully you are making a Preorder (or whatever the hell you want to call it) for each version of the game.

Wouldn't it be sad if the "bonus" character slot was actually on top of ONE character slot that comes with Nightfall? I wouldn't know whether to laugh (shoulda saw it comin, can't believe they actually did it) or cry if that were the case but they would both end with a resounding proclaimation of WTF!

well, first of all, they have the technology set up to easily set up a free slot

it may be the following friday if they dont have time to set up a halloween event for Nightfall.
it might be a bit crowded to launch on friday and also get a full scale event going at the same time especially as they will be having halloween in Tyria, some event in Cantha and xxxx in Nightfall all at the same time.
they may handle the events this week and the launch the next week rather than all at once

By the wording, you HAVE to own Nightfall for this extra character slot to work.

So in a general summary the Pre-Release pack (NOT a Pre-Order pack) will come with a bonus slot that will compound with the multiple slots offered in the NightFall Release (Probly 2, making a total of 3). The pack will cost somewhere around $10-$15 us and this price will NOT come off the price of a Nightfall purchase.
If this is the case then your pretty much just buying a character slot with some game music, weapons you don't need and a chance to play Nightfall a day before everyone else. Not really a worthwhile purchase in my eyes.
I do however like the Eygptian, Syrian and Indian motifs they have running in the galleries. I think Nightfall will be a surmounting expansion pack for Guildwars and an overall good buy.

early play comes with the preorder and was NOT listed as coming with this RETAIL PACKAGE

The pre-order pack for factions was around $10 and they (eb games that is) took that off the price of buying the expansion. So in the end you were paying the same thing for factions + the pre-order. This one being called a *bonus* pack, seems to not work the same way. But i can hope! Since past communications with retailers has been so screwed up, you might just end up with that deal again anyway.
Regardless, I'm getting the bonus pack... the day early, weapons, mini-guide, extra slot and the like sounds like a decent deal for the cost of just a slot.

Finally someone level-headed. I have the same exact questions. People get so easily excited when they hear that we might get a */bonus/* slot, so they IMMEDIATELY proclaim their early investment into this next chapter with the pre-order, when they don't even know the full details! These kinds of people don't see the whole picture at all, and are the suckers that ANET is banking on.
But it's a two-way street, I know. ANET and their "general information" - they leave out the "dirty" specifics and only show the good so the blind public get excited on it. Please don't assume any position from the statements given. Gaile - I am calling you out, we need some clarification, and preferably before Sept. 15th!

Just noticed something interesting. It'll be on a DVD ROM, not a CD. All you out there without DVD drives better get one if you want to access the special stuff.

either that or their PC is really really old, but if they can afford a game for $49.99 I'm sure that theyll have a DVD Drive since they only cost $15.00 roughly these days....Its a risky thing but a fantastic marketing strategy by giving players an additional slot for 1 for pre-ordering, not sure how this will benefit players after the launch of GW as new players will be at a disadvantage.

Yes, I will be pre-ordering nightfall just like i did with the other chapters, and w00t if it comes with a free character slot too, but...
No, I'm not at all interested in buying this pre-release even if it has an extra character slot and all these frills if its not going to be the pre-order. Savvy? A-net please explain when you get the chance.
Yes.. you are confusing the h3ll out of a lot of us, and yes, cause we dont have crystal balls (like was explained by Zamial). It would be h3lla nice to have a little advance warning for some of these things.

But, the only thing I get from it is I will get a few books of art, and a key that will include a free slot, and 2 free items. It says nothing about this being a pre-order for the game itself.

Knowing my luck I'd buy this pre-release on sept. 15th and find out that i just spent 50 bones on a package with guildwars art and a key that will give me a free character slot and a couple cool items if I go out and fork out an extra 50 bones to buy the actual game. Until I see clarification, my only thoughts are "No thanks, I'll let someone else be the ginny-pig this time".

I beleive that they changed it from pre-order to pre-release becuase their had been some confusion about this from the companys and that they can get their crap right this time. But we will have to wait till it comes out. I most likey will get it. Also they put "more" which means their could be stuff added, like the 24hr ahead start and other things as well. Time will tell.

my order for 49.99 was a preorder of the complete game plus the noted preorder items as a bonus for preordering.
now there are 2 separate items
the straight preorder of the game for 49.99 with no bonus items
and a second item called Nightfall plus starter kit which is 54.99 and includes the bonus items but only 1 of the 2 special ingame items but does include the extra slot.
as i said i am waiting to see which way the store jumps on this

This is where I believe french speaking people are quite happy as the name for the pre-release pack hasn't changed with them and is still "boite de pre-commande" or pre-order pack.
