"Rare" should mean "rare"
Xenrath
Well, one thing this weekend double-your-fun (?) event has shown me even more so - gold "rare" items don't often deserve that name. What's the point in calling something "rare" if it has useless/rubbish mods that aren't really worth anything?
This is not a rant, but questioning the meaning of "rare" - surely it should mean "very hard to find but has good quality stats" as opposed to "doesn't drop often, but can still be crap"
The latter, you may as well just call it common and drop it as such since it's next to worthless. Rare things should be just that, very rare finds but also something worthwhile.
"Oh wow! I found a rare item! oh, on ID'ing it, it's a rare piece of crap..." am I the only one who thinks it should be something a bit better than that?
Yes I know, impact on prices etc. the main question is, what's the point in calling them rare if half the time they're just straight to merchant rubbish? Make them truly rare... they drop very infrequently but are actually something special when they do happen.

Actually I agree with you; though "good" is subjective.
"Good" for me is being that I can use it or would use it, while others it would mean it's near perfect or perfect and can make them an instant 100k.
I agree in that with a level two wisdom seeker on one of my characters, I have yet to find a single rare item I would call good, in that I would use it; and the only max one I ever found had a req 9 communing with a 20% fire recharge and a 20% faster death magic. Useless.

I too was let down to find my bags of golds all with useless mods...

Yes, most gold items arent rare at all... they drop less often than white, blue or purple items, so i assume the word rare refers to that.
In Dutch (my native language) we have a word "raar", which means "weird" in English. That probably refers to the goofy stats from many rare items :P

Yeah I agree with you,
What does make a gold a gold and not a purple anyway?

I agree as well.
I've opened about 200 chests this weekend (hooray for titles allowing you to keep track ), out of which around 150 were gold. Out of those 150 gold items, there was a total of 7 Items that were not total and utter trash. And out of those 7 items, only 1 is worth keeping.
I'd like if they did the same with rare drops as they did with the Runes. Make the rare items really mean "rare" and "good" but nerf their chance of dropping.
Make the current gold distribution purple so that folks can still easily get their mods out of the weapons and use them on collector items.
I full well know that people would whine and bitch about not enough rares dropping. But that would be "cured" by those items actually being of use.
I'm just tired of seeing all those Staves and Wands that are specced into 3 different attributes. It's a lot harder to get a decent golden staff than it is to get a decent golden weapon you can use to build your items upon.
Weapon:
Max Damage
Damage Mod
Low Req
versus:
Staff:
Max Damage
Mod 1
Mod 2
Low Req
Even worse are the unmoddable Foci and Wands. The chance to get those right is just downright funny. You can still mod a bad blade or staff to some use. But Foci and Wands will forever stay bad.

You know as an average treasure hunter I find the golds to be just about the same, HOWEVER they appear more with the double your fun weekend.
The more posts I see about how they suck ( and yes, most of them do ) the more I think these observations are coming from people who don't normally explore with 6 or 12 keys on their person.
I'm enjoying this event. So far I unlock some add-ons I didn't unlock yet, and I was this close to having a super sweet gold. Only bad part is its 15<50. Otherwsie its the most juiced up gold I ever got.

Most of the posters in this thread allready stated that the event is fine. It is just that it also made it quite clear that the current "rare" System is somewhat flawed and there is room for improvement.

lol and I thought the event would mess up the prices of rares like pheonix blade, platinum bows, etc.

I wan't platinum items gold just doesn't do it for me.

Rare:
2 a : marked by unusual quality, merit, or appeal : DISTINCTIVE b : superlative or extreme of its kind
3 : seldom occurring or found :
Both definitions apply to GW rare items. Its rare to find a shield with a +10 vs Plants....but this weekend...anything goes!

I had a rare Fellblade that after ID'ing turned out to be a Poisonous Fellblade of Trollslaying, with no inherent mod. >.<
Yogi's Pain
First off I want to say this weekend is a horrible idea. And for some reason it seems that its more than a double chance to be a gold chest. Usually I average around 1.5 golds per run. Last night I would say 80-85% of the chests where gold. Then again we only did one run where all the chests where open because the majority of people running are just doing it for the weekend and hitting up the closest chest or two and then warping out.
Anyways, on topic. I'm not sure why you're having bad luck. I would say I average a good weapon every 20 or so Golds. By good I mean 8-10 req with some sort of max dmg mod. Thats not counting the times I salvage a perfect mod or near perfect, +29 health for example.
True that the perfect weapons don't drop that often, but they come in streaks. Got a 15>50 req nine daggers and a req 8 axe in the same day. Next day an oni blade with the same stats.
As for selling the items. If people are going to pay for a rare skin, then most of the time they are willing to pay for it to be perfect. Making a req 11 Golden Pheonix Blade basically useless.
As for Staffs and Wands. Good luck finding anything that is comparable to collecter or green items. To my knowledge they just don't drop. Well let me take that back, I get 10/10 items enough to say they aren't rare. But when I PvE on a caster I'm usually specializing in something meaning that I'd rather have a 20/20, no point in a global recharge if you're only using one attribute. In 400+ golds Ided, one 19/20 wand with the same attribute and one 20/20 staff, dom and inspiration. Nothing else even close to perfect.

Eh... whenever I chest run, I usually find more golds than I do purples. (not talking about this weekend event, I mean on average. I haven't done anything this weekend yet) they aren't RARE to me. just crap.

Too many people complaining about their sucky drops and not enough suggestions on how to fix what may or may not be the actual problem.
So now that ANet is spoiling us by giving us more 'rare' chest drops, we realize that we don't want MORE gold. We want BETTER gold. Is that a pretty good summation?
So ANet, please, make gold drops more character-specific and with a greater chance of perfect stats instead of just more gold drops overall.

This weekend is an awesome idea. As much as I dislike chests, I barely see any 100k+XX ecto nonsense in Kaineng
Personally, I believe that this weekend was designed to bring down the prices because everything is extortionate these days.

I don't agree. Rare means not occurring often, and compared to white/blue/purples, that's what gold items are. It won't be perfect every time or have a useful mod every time, that's why the best mods are so sought after. I don't want every gold drop to be worth keeping, I think the current system is fine.
If you really wanted, they could make gold drops always amazing, but very very rare. Personally I wouldn't want that.

I think there have been some suggestions - my one is to reduce the number of gold drops, but compensate by making them something special/appropriate when they do finally drop (for example, no more 3 attribute items or things with no natural mods)
Another suggestion which sounds good to me is to make the current "Gold" selection into purple. That way people can still get their upgrades and salvage, and you can introduce a new set of rare items which again, very infrequently drop but are something special when they do happen.
So yes, "better Golds" is an accurate summary. No point making more and more drops - I'd say if anything make them drop much much less, but compensate by making them things you're not likely to sell to the merchant.
There might be a spike in the prices of top end stuff, but really, the average player won't be affording the 100k+ecto items anyway and those who trade in high end stuff are rich enough already that it won't cripple them either. So, end result? When the average player gets a gold, it's actually invokes a "wow!" feeling instead of a "meh..." feeling, which I think is how it should have been to start with.

My purple drops have better stats than the gold drops :/
I mean, what kind of gold staff drops which has a req.9 in domination magic, then has half recharge of diving favor skills and another half casting time of spawning power spells. WTF? No character in GW has 3 professions all in one.
But I got a purple celestial 15^50.

Its rare becuase of the level of the stats, it doesnt mean everything on it will be great its random for every color. Gold items go into every category and u will most likely only get a high % with a gold unlike purple which will got to about 13%dmg 17 or 18% on mods.
With gold u have the chance of high stuff, though its random to anything, where as blue its 11%dmg or highly salvagble, to precious.
Gold does not mean perfect, it just mean that the stats of what ever it is is gonna be high. Theres a wider range of what gold can be thats why they tend to suck.
Patience is a virtue

ANet can not possibly keep pace with the rampant mudflation in GW. Until ANet introduces item wear, you'll just have to live with free-falling item value.

That's the sound of gold being drained out of the economy by the countless hordes of people thinking they'd win the "rare/gold" lottery this weekend.
It's a stroke of genius on ANet's part... drain gold out of the economy (which will cause deflation)... AND deflate the prices of gold items.
muhahaha... ANet I love you and your black hearts.

I myself can't complain about this weekend event,i've made 130k already.Although Xenrath's statement is a nice idea,i dont like it.If Anet did put your idea into action, then clearly the market would just be unbelievable prices.I think anet did this to try bring the market prices down like Makosi said, maybe to help new people or poor people get some decent stuff for a low price.if u remember they did put that update in where u could get rares in areas more frequently,so i doubt Anet would change anything.
But thats just my 2 cents
But thats just my 2 cents

That's what mudflation does: item value degrades due to surplus of items.
Hell, I even remember a time when purple non-max weapons and shields sold for 2-3K each.
