Locked Gates In Nightfall
The Herbalizer
Dunow if anyone knows this yet. Has Anet stated whether they will be included in Nightfall?
If not does everyone look forward to the possibility of them existing?

I hope it does have gates like Factions . I've heard a few people claim it looked like it didn't by the way those stupid maps that keep surfacing look.

Thats why Im gonna wait until it comes out to see if it has gates or not. $10 for a preorder pack, without Nightfall. Then just buy nightfall when it comes out if it isnt like factions. Either way, Im only buying one more GW game. So much for it being cheaper than WoW.

GW: Phrophecies = $50 + Factions = $50 + Nightfall = $50 + (if you really need them) 5 slots = $50. Grand Total for let's say 2 years of play....... $200 (plus apllicable sales tax in your area.)
WoW: Original Price = $60 + monthly fee of anywhere from $10 - $20, let's call it $15 to be fair. $15 x 24 months = $360 + original price of $60 = $420 (plus apllicable sales tax in your area.)
Oh ya, WoW is waaaay cheaper.

wow, 2 new Races (no new classes, although I guess if Horde gets Paladin and Alliance gets Shaman, it's kinda a new class... if you're stupid)
But, back on topic.
I don't want gates in Nightfall, but I won't be surprised if they're there.
Still, I hope only the main missions are gated (if any), and you can explore more logically than in Factions.
=HT=Ingram
I have yet to get a CE version yet, but mostly that is only because I am to impatient to wait for it. I want to get in there too much to wait. SO yea I get each chapter ad play through it at least two times... I'm o my 4th on factions with Necro this time. all this time I never did a necro... lol what the hell was I thinking??? its fabulous!!!
Prophecies I played to death with each class, and 3 of them through Factions as well... so yea. Lots of re playability in PvE ad TONS of it in PvP. I mean what is it now? around 100 class combos now with Nightfall? And now you can add slots as needed???? Why the heck not?
Best of all, walk away for a month or so to actually have a life outside the game, and guess what? your still right where you left off... try that on WoW!!! lol sorry kid your back to the beginning for not paying our extortion subscription for a month or so... TOO BAD. don't miss a payment next time...
Opps. forgot sarcasm is suppose to be off.. lol
Back on topic... The NPE this Sept will not be much help on hints to the gates issue cause if its like Factions It will be as open as possible to allow for the maximum exposure. However there may be a hint at a kind of area staging or something like that to tell how it will isolate areas of the game from runners...
Most likely bridges and one way boatmen (like to riverside in prophacies)...

If anyone has played through Factions with more than one character they would NOT want those cursed locked gates!!!!
Quid Pro Quo
I agree with those who say you should be able to get to farther areas for a price if you really want.
Its not like you are shortening the game.. you can still go back and do what you want if you haven't already but for people like me who like missions and pvp but not normal quests locked gates are a bore. I enjoyed doing everything possible with my first few characters in prophecies because I felt like I didn't have to and then it was nice to be able to speed them along.. but in factions I felt forced into doing the quests.. which makes them feel like chores which actually turned me off from playing more.
Its not like we are paying a monthly fee once we buy the game they get their money so why do they try to get us to spend more time playing?
Really, I don't get it.
I really hope there are no locked gates.

In my experiance the locked gates in factions kept the really bad players back, so that after about naphui or tahnnaki you rarly run into the horribly bad players. In prophesis the only areas that the bad players weren't in is after THK, or in the maguuma jungle (which they skip). Its especially bad in the desert.
The only part I found tedious in factions was getting the 10k faction for eaither side (especially luxon as they dont have enough non-repeatable quests before gyala).
Storywise the gates wouldn't of made much sense in prophesis though. In cantha the city has parts quarantined off due to what they think it a plauge, and the luxon/kurzick lands are in the middle of a war so it makes sense the restrict travel to those they don't trust. So the gates do fit with the storyline in factions.
I'd actually prefer locked gates in nightfall, simply so there is a minimum on the skill level of the players in the later missions. Though if they don't fit with the storyline I will be against them.

I seriously hope we don't have locked gates... I've played through 6 times just to get Kurzick armours D:
RTSFirebat
Hope they have them... BUT...
Only for important towns, like main cities and stuff. So it will force people to play the game, but still give them the freedom to run about a bit.

Forget gates. I think the better solution is to put pre-requisites on doing the missions (can't do mission n until you complete mission n-1). I don't care if the people are in the same city as me. If they don't do that, then go back to prophecies-style. With 10 different classes with Nightfall and possibly as many or more characters, I don't want to 'watch the movie 10 times' just to get the elites and armour for the others.
bigwig
sounds to me like they're going to have puzzles that require more than one person to advance through explorable areas, instead of having gates.
at least thats how i interpreted the mention of those types of things.

I hope there will be no locked gates just some very strong enemys to keep players back.

I'm gonna wait until it is confirmed that there are no locked gates before buying it...

I want no locked gates in that sense.
But there shoud be areas where you cannot leave UNTIL you beat a specific mission.
example:
Crystal Desert.
You can only reach it by beating Sanctum Cay.
You can only leave it by beating all 3 missions and then beating your Dopple.
But you can run around and explore it and see the various outposts.

total elitest jerks made it through all over the place
maybe we have different opinions on what makes a *bad* player.
if only game skill is your criteria you are correct.
i look for a bit more than an ass who can mash skills just right
if they put gates into each chapter they will filter out customers as well as middle level players

My only issue with locked gates is only that it makes a very linear game even more linear. Its ok on the first go, since you don't actually feel that you are being forced to do anything, but on your second or more times through, you start feeling how constrained everything is and how much of a chore it is to go by the linear route the locked gates have plotted out for you. This game needs a feeling of more openess if it hopes to survive, increasingly making the game even more linear through locked gates or similiar mechanisms can only kill it. Anyone who has played through factions with multiple characters cannot honestly say that they did not feel it was a chore.

lock gate is good why not? it keeps the noob away! they should raise the equirement. the one in Faction is obviously not hard enough. 10k faction? that is it? i can get it in 3 hours. Honestly, faction is way too easy... that is why alot of good pvers i know of already quit game. making nightfall harder can actually make it last longer for us. i have played tho ch1+ch2 for all my 9 chars. and it took me less than 2 months. BTW, you dont have to complete any quest to gain your 10K kurzick or Luxon faction. Just AB them, you get average 600 faction no matter you win or lose, you might as well just afk to leech the faction. once you got 10k faction, you are free to go. all your chars can go to w/e place they want to get the 15k armors.

face it there are a ton more paying *noobs* than elite neet experts.
i have over 1000 hours of simply playing PVE all types for the fun of it and i guarantee i would not even come close to the standards of play you or your quitting elite friends would require from me to even speak to me in game let alone join a group

Seriously, there is no justifiable reason to have gates. None.
You don't want to join groups with anyone <20? Then don't.
You only want to adventure with people who've done the same missions, in the same order as you? Why?
Reasons not to have gates:
It's artificial. EX: There's no reason why I shouldn't be able to cap Flesh Golem before the Napui Quarter mission. None.
Max Armor available at beginning anyway. I know many people hated runners to Drok's in Prophecy (although how it effected them after the Arenas shut down, I don't know). That's not the case in Factions, and probably won't be the case in Nightfall.
No Gates = More Fun. I enjoy exploring on my own, following a non-linear path. This was the best part about Prophecy, the openess and freedom to do whatever you want, when you want.
Alleji
If anet doesn't want a mailbomb with anthrax from me, they damn better get rid of the locked gates.
The Herbalizer
I loved how you could get lost in prophecies. The first time I played I had no idea where to go my warrior got from yaks bend to ice tooth cave at a low lvl and me scared of dying and ressing miles back. Was great fun. Same with when I went from TOA to Fishermans Haven and had no idea where I was going. With factions you are forced to go through the game doing specific quests and missions.
Also I hated the city area in factions hence why I have only got to hzh on two of my 15+ chars. It is really boring just like ascalon is. I usually get run to the desert and quest from then on after.

Get some class.
blastm
barely see them the first time i did it. only noticed them when i tried to go faster with my 2nd toon and wanted to skip a part of the primary quest.
But I can't understand why so much people are complaining about the so-called gates.
what's the point in instantly warping up from the first mission to the last one? you won't even get a über armor like when you where running straight towards droknar's forge...
and it's not like faction is that long anyway. You're whining about that too, remember? the issue isn't if you get checkpoints in the main quest or not, but the size of the explorable areas... :/

Gates on major mission/story outposts, but none on portals to surrounding areas or smaller outposts.
