LMAO, you need a DVD drive to run the Nightfall disk, GG.
xb0vv
Gg anet, guildwards 1 and 2 disks are for cd rom, and now ive received my pre ordered nightfal only to find out the disk dosent work because i havent got a dvd drive.
It also says on the back that the disk only runs in a dvd drive.
What the hell anet, do you expect half a million guildwars fans to update their pcs just to run your game?
Im disapointed....very.
*PS* Will my pc still be able to download the files automatically - do i NEED the disk?

You should be able to just download them, I did that with Factions.
Ellington
I would venture to say most people with computers that can run Guild Wars have DVD drives...and no, you don't actually need the disk. :P

SURE, why do you think there is "gwclient" available to download, or HOW ppl who buy game in Online Store get their game?
Pynne
I don't have a DVD drive either. No big deal, just hammer in the key, and you're off killing red dots in Nightfall.

And REGARDLESS, the DVD is OPTIONAL. http://www.guildwars.com and get the client and it will download instead of you having to upgrade your ancient PC.

Not sure which version you got but it was posted in all the game content lists that the SE came with 4 CDs and the CE 1 DVD. Just be a bit more careful when you read the specs and don't blame ANet unless the information provided was faulty.
ludogego
In the Collector's edition the game is on DVD and in the regular one it is on 3 CDs. It was said a long time ago it will be like this. Even on your pre-release pack there is a symbol saying DVD ROM. But even if you don't have DVD Rom you can download the game from the servers and then you'll play it again
Exoudeous
Its not the fact that everyone should have a dvd drive by now, its not the fact that its not cd roms.
Its just because its soemthing to complain about cause they have nothing better to do.

i do not have a dvd drive in my computers. could i afford one? sure, but that is not the issue here. i should not have to buy a dvd drive if i dont want.
GW should come in CD and DVD formats. it is up to the people puching their product to cater to the needs of the user.

You can just download the client. You dont need the CD/DVD.
If you have the game installed, you will download the files regardless if you own it or not since engine and interface updates affect everyone.

I've never used one CD to install Guild Wars onto any machine I've played from ever. I just download the client and download the maps the first time I go to them...

For the majority of people, having it on a DVD is actually a perk, no swapping of cd's. That's why it's in the CE.

Woah, hold on. You're telling me it isn't on floppy disks??
Get with the times, games have been coming on DVD-only for years.

Just to state the obvious.. the disc (whether CD or DVD) is there for those peoples who lost the GW Client install and want to reinstall the files it. Not to mention, installing the game again from the disc, you would probably need to redownload all the things that is missing.

How are those of us that actually would DIE to see more games out on DVD so we don't have a pile 4-6 (or more) CDs to shuffle around supposed to feel? It's folks like the OP that whine like that that publishers don't keep up with what the majority wants.
DVD drives have been out for years, yet those of us paying 50-80 dollars for games still have to deal with CDs because some folks can't be bothered to spend 20 bucks to upgrade.
Same problems we had when CD drives first came out. Publishers took years to adopt to a better technology, even though it was actually cheaper to burn one CD than 10 floppy disks. Why? Not because people were slow to adopt CD Rom drives, but because retailers like walmart refused to sell CD versions because it could "hurt sales" because Cletus didn't have the money to upgrade his 286.

I spy a close out thread coming soon.. *sigh* why are we flaming this fool for not having DVD drive in his system?

it is important to note that this is not just something to complain about.
it is not about the fact that we can download the client.
the point is that we as consumers should not have to do this. we should not have to work around a product that we paid for with our hard earned money.
we as consumers have rights that large coorporations are taking advantage of. in a world that has several different types of media that a product can be released on, the maufacturer needs to cater to the needs of its consumers.
it is unfortunate that these corporations dont listen and are only concerned with money. the only way to make them change their ways is to be vocal about our concerns. to demand equal treatment for all consumers. not just the ones with DVD drives.
many will find my views rigid and maybe a bit silly. but the fact remains...if you let corporations take just a little of your rights away, they will take all of them away.

If you can spend twenty bucks more on the collectors edition, but the twenty bucks to buy a DVD-Rom drive is too much, maybe you need to examine your priorities.
The Pointless
Personally... I think it's about time it was on a DVD. I like being able to set an installer running while I go make a cuppa or have a gander through the manual without having to rush back every 10 seconds to check for "Insert Disk 2"
The disk-swapping should have stayed with the Amiga, imho.
Anyways, most PC magazines have switched to DVD-only for their covermounts. I'm amazed this hasn't happened in America (or where-ever the OP lives) yet.

I'd also like to add about the whole "companies are taking away your rights" BS.
ArenaNet is not taking your rights away at all. They are offering both CD and DVD ROM versions of the game (which really should only be DVD, but thats another issue). If you are buying the CE edition, ArenaNet correctly assumes that you have a requirement to run the game that people who are "hardcore" gamers (which is reflected in your purchase of the $10 higher version, because you want everything you can get) have in their machines.
Tachyon
Bloody hell! Is there nothing people won't moan about? In this day and age everyone should have a DVD drive in their system, especially as they're only around £10. You can't be bothered to spend £10 on a DVD drive yet can be bothered to spend £50 on the CE without checking first?
What the hell's next? Sending it back 'cause the disc has an hole in the centre?
Not to mention that you don't even need the disc to install Nightfall. Like said above, open box, take out code and then enter it into the 'add new code' box.

This isn't like you're missing out on any special content by using the disks. In fact, if you have to download the client, it may be easy due to the fact you don't have to swap discs. I see where you're coming from, but this is quite laughable. No one is forcing you to buy a DVD drive, but for your own sake, I think you should. Keep up with the times!

A-nets gone pretty far to offer as many options for players to get ahold of a copy of the game and I'm pretty sure that the ce has cd's in it as well. I think the majority of folks are going to demand dvds over cd's and with blu-ray and other technologies starting to get more popular, if you still only have a cd rom, there will be alot of titles you simple would be able to enjoy. For an upgrade, it's a pretty cheap option.

While DVD drives have been out for quite a while, it is the responsibility of the publisher to state the requirements needed to install the game:
From the official Guild Wars Site:
http://www.guildwars.com/support/faq...aq.php#support
Although DVD's have been out for some time now, since they are not stated as a requirement, the OP has all the right to complain about it.
