For Installing / Troubleshooting - See DirectSong FAQ Addendum
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...php?t=10391162

DirectSong music packs allowed you to add higher quality versions of music already in GuildWars, as well as adding new music done by same music creator / composer, Jermy Soule.

DirectSong's Homepage - http://www.directsong.com/
DirectSong's Support Website - http://www.directsong.com/support/
About Jermy Soule's - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeremy_Soule.

How it works - From DirectSong's "Guild Wars DirectSong Music Read Me First.rtf"

Quote:
When Guild Wars starts up, it first determines if you have any DirectSong music files on your PC. It does this by reading the information from your computers registry. If the registry information is correct, Guild Wars now knows where your DirectSong folder is. One critical thing Guild Wars knows is where to find the ds_GuildWars.dll file is located since this file is required to play back the DirectSong version of a song.

While playing the game, should you change zones or should you be in a location long enough for the music to swap to another song Guild Wars looks to see if the song is available as the DirectSong version. If the DirectSong music file is found on your computer it will load and play that version instead of version which is embedded in the game.

This list of music files to played in the different locations in the game is contained in the file, GuildWars.ds.
Make Your Own Soundtrack

Silent Coyote has written a great, easy to use program for editing the GuildWars.ds to make your own soundtrack, even adding your own music http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...1&postcount=71

I think he rewrote it a second time. But with the way mods delete things around here, you never really know half the time.

Play time is 80 minuets on the GWNF soundtrack BTW. I don't know what's the difference between the 101e and 101. I wish that they would stop doing that.

101e is the the Collector's Edition exclusive tracks. Six tracks long I think it was.

I find it pretty lame that some music tracks can be unlocked only by buying certain version of the Guild Wars campaigns.

Trading Outpost (Bonus)
Divinity Coast (Bonus)
Tears of the Fallen (Bonus)
The Great Raid (Bonus)

Veteran players have to buy Prophecies AGAIN (special edition?) to get these tracks.

They miss potential customers. I would buy ALL new tracks if they ever come to directsong. However, im not going to buy another copy of the game just because of 4 new tracks.

101e only came with the "Special Edition" it cost the same of the collector's edition, comes with a bunch of goodies and was targeting Europe. It also contained an artbook 2, code to give you bathlazar faction and more.

This type of new music for the "exclusive" x version of GuildWars seems to be bundled only with the collector's edition's now.

I agree.

What's the point of buying a sound track from DirectSong when you never get all of the music. Obviously the CE costs $20 more because of 1. Soundtrack @ 9.99 and 2. the other stuff @ 9.99.

I sent a query to DirectSong and I'm going to ask Gaile about that the next time she's on.

EDIT: Direct Song claims its the same amount of music.

Quote:
I am a support tech, and I am sorry to tell you that I don't know.

But what I do know is that Collector's Edition Packaging contains a CD with 35 tracks and then there are 6 additional tracks someone can download from our site.

If you get the OST, you get 41 tracks with over 81 minutes of music.

I haven't done a minute count to compare but I bet it is about the same.

Best Regards,

For me the point of buying the soundtrack from DirectSong has always been the bonus tracks included in it. Also the choice of which version of Guild Wars I'd buy has always been the one that has exclusive music with it.

"Exclusive music" as DirectSong and Anet has been advertising it past these three chapters. I doubt they'd suddenly put them available for everyone now.

Edit: And as far as potential customers go, I would not buy CE versions of the game if the music would be available elsewhere.

Well, those tracks I listed earlier, are not from any CE. They are in Prophecies Special Edition. It was available much later and therefore old players are put in unfair position because they have to buy another copy while new players just buy the SE and get them.

Which is exactly what I did with that SE version.

It's the same thing as with whatever ingame item goodies Anet offers with various Guild Wars versions they put out. If you want them, you have to buy that version. I'm not seeing those being made available for everyone either.

Regardless, owners of the SE should be able to buy the same amount of music from DirectSong. IF they actually need to create exclusivity to the in-game music then the CE really wasn't worth squat to begin with.

All you have to do is download and install the song packs from directsong and they'll automatically integrate into GW? It's a bit unclear what you need to do in order to get them to work.

A few questions about this - I have the battle pack, and collector's editions for GW, Factions, and Nightfall, all with their attendant directsong packs installed

However, I was not aware that purchasing the soundtracks actually integrated with the game and upgraded the music quality for each of GW/Factions/Nightfall

Is that true? If so, is there a side by side comparison of the same song? I'm not going to buy the music 'sight unseen' unless I can actually hear the difference

When you buy the packs, they will have a download area for the installers.

The installer asks you to choose a location to put the music. Then it downloads them and two other files to that spot that you chose and links the location via the registry.

They won't integrate into the DAT file, they will play externally.

@ Kerus Tel Veren

The majority of music files from DirectSong are 320kbps now. I know that is not saying much, but I personally can hear the difference between the in game music and the better quality version. Your mileage may vary however. But for what its worth, there is a preview area on directsong.com for the different song packs minus the battle pak for prophecies(I honestly don't know why).

Any chance we can buy lossless versions?

For some reason even the 320kbps ones still sound pretty bad on my machine... at least for the factions ones I bought the previous time.

There is no known Lossless version. If they ever do go lossless, they will want a DRM scheme that works with WMP.

generik, haven't tried it, but if you have the soundtracks on cd, perhaps you can rip them to wma losslessly (if you can do that with wma - i try to avoid the format) and replace the wma files in the directsong directories with them. worth a shot.

how do you tell if the directsong versions are actually playing? does it open WMP in the background and play them? i don't think i've gotten to points in the game yet where they should be playing - but i will be today, likely.

When you install the directsong pack, it add's info to the Windows Registry. When GuildWars fires up, it looks at the Windows Registry to see if DirectSong is installed. GuildWars (clinet) has the ability to play wma music itself (not using Windows Media Player). A way to see if you have a directsong playing is go to option, then check the sound tab. The DS logo / music note will be light up.

After installing the music to my direct song directory, the button "Listen" apears.

I click it, and a new window opens, saying i need to aquire licenses.

It enters a page and asks me to put my email adress and password in order to aquire the licences.

I put them both, and after pressing enter, in order to progress, it goes to a white page, saying "Problem, page no found"

Im using Firefox, and my Internet explorer is messed up due to some virus long time ago (not like id use it anyway, Ie is CRAP)

Help apreciated.

I payed for this crap ( when i bought CE ) , and it doesnt work.

The WMP license aquisition needs Internet Explorer. I know, that sucks. But Microsoft tied components use IE exclusively.

Maybe you can try upgrading to IE7 and see if it restores IE back to normal.

Damm...

Doesnt Upgrading/downloading to Ie 7 require Microsoft to check the authenticy of my Windows Version?

Guess that means some people wont be geting it because they are using ilegal copies.

Hypothetically speaking that is.

Thanks for the quick support nevertheless.
At least i know what the problem is.

that happened to me too. i just had to retry a couple times for the two packs i got. it'll eventually work. just keep trying to acquire those licenses.

oh, and i had ie7 installed (wanted to try it... ie still sucks... heh) and it worked. dunno about ie6, but i don't see why it wouldn't work.

People with illegal copies get around that junk everyday.

But if you have a legal version of windows, its no trouble.

Hmm when I thought it was time to get that bonus soundtrack, I entered the key on the site, but it's telling me that its invalid. Its like the first part of the key is missing 2 digits since the field for it is big for 7 digits but the key that i have has 5. Anyone know what i can do?

EDIT - NVM got it working... I wrote the O in it as a 0... lol

...I'd pay $2 or so for a code to access these songs. They should offer them in the online store for those that already own Chap. 1 (maybe region-limited to NA, so EU people still have to buy the SE), or DirectSong should be allowed to sell them on the site (as in, without purchasing the SE) since the game's over a year old now, and four songs are hardly an incentive to buy a game for the people that already own it. :P

Update - and some minor confusion...

DirectSong has re-released the Original GuildWars (and SE version), and Gw Battlepack from 128kb to 320kb quality.

Something things I noticed

Credits are now Jeremy & Julian Soule (instead of just Jeremy) which is in line with the latter music packs artist information.

Actually cd-cover art for GW Battlepack 1... and still do no cd-burning rights for it

Removal of the older WMP DRM Track "99" License file.

Some of the files, at least according to windows media player 11 .. are missing media "usage" rights data when checking if drm permissions

They have also removed license back up ability on a lot of them... which is nothing if you have Windows Media Player 11... it removed the ability completely.

Updated Trigger / Que (guildwars.ds) sheet. Didn't notice any new new changes but better organization / groupings.

Exclusive tracks are:

Divinity Coast - Personal Rating 4/5
Tears of The Fallen - Personal Rating 3/5

So when updating both Paks, which one should I update first? (Battle Pak 1 or Special Soundtrack) so I can keep my guildwars.ds file updated correctly?

The oldest one should be installed first so you get the latest guildwars.ds file. You can always got to DirectSong's web site and check Troubleshooting for the latest file anyway if you have problems.

I've just installed the Nightfall Soundtrack and it locks my system up completely when I change areas. I have to hard reset my computer :-(
I've had the Sorrow's free mini-pak since its' release and had no problems. I can play the Nightfall tracks on WMP11 without any problems. I've checked everything recommended on their support site and there is little I can do. I have a fresh install of XP SP2, IE7 and WMP11. It's only US$10 but is it really that hard just to get some music to play on queue without effecting the whole game? I've deleted the DirectSong registry entry so I can play again minus the music paks.

Oh and I don't have much faith in companies that don't keep their own troubleshooting pages up to date or accurate. It sure makes fixing things hard. The paths they list from the guildwars.ds file are incorrect saying it should have \DirectSong but it doesn't have that at all. They have a link to WMP10 as the latest version, V11 is the latest (some people wouldn't be aware of this and waste their time installing the wrong version).

Not Guild Wars, DirectSong, it's there responsibilty not ArenaNet's. I was referred to the Troubleshooter. It is a known issue and you don't have to look very far to see it's been a problem for years. It's only a bit of music so I'll just put it down to experience and move on. I can always listen to the music via WMP whenever I like while playing GW anyway so there is a kind of alternative in any case. I was nearly tempted to get the Battle Pack as well, I'm glad I didn't.
I just did a search of the Guild Wars Knowledge Base but there is no help on this matter there as I suspected.

The order doesn't seem to matter anymore. I updated all my packs yesterday (Sorrow's Furnace, Prophecies SE, Nightfall CE), and it installed the same guildwars.ds file for each one.

I was quoting info from their troubleshooter and this is just another example of their site not being kept up to date. DirectSong support contacted me and gave me another ds_GuildWars.dll to try but my system still locks up completely.

EDIT: They gave me a refund :-)

I have GW installed on 2 computers. One I have all my DS files on, the other none.

I prefer not to use up a precious license for my 2nd comp. Can I directly copy all the files from one computer to the other, or do I need to go through the whole process?

If I can just copy and paste them over, are they all conveniently located in 1 folder, or is it a little more complicated than that?

thanks in advance

If you run out of licenses they will renew them if you ask. You can't just copy files over as they have to be registered on that PC. This is the whole point of the license to stop people just copying to another PC. Also once the files are in a certain location you cannot move them as there is a registry entry pointing to them. This is all explained on their support web site.

well i jumped through all the hurles..downloaded them all, upgraded wmp to 11, acquired all the licenses, now my DS icon in the option page no longer has the yellow !, but now it always says 'DirectSong is not currently playing additional music', which is odd because I'm hanging out in areas that have the same name as the music (such as Pogahn Passage, Wilderness of Bahdza, and a few Factions ones).

I can play the files in WMP, but it seems in-game they won't go, though there's no obvious errors

edit:::::::::: ahhhhhhhhhhh nevermind sometimes it just takes a while before it starts playing bonus music

I dont see how hes trolling. He brings up a good point. Why would you spend money on this? Clearly it was designed as a money pit. What kind of goon would listen to the music anyway? You dont have winamp or your radio on at the time? You would rather listen to gregorian chants than real music? No ones trolling. Trolling is an easy excuse out of not seeing this situation for face value and exactly what it is. Keep strongly in your mind that if you ask people to spend their money and they refuse, then you call them trolls so you can label them as not being intelligent, so, I could guess, everyone else could continue spending, and imo wasting, their money... than the only troll here is you and I openly question your intentions. Who else but a DirtectSong undercover would push a product as useless as this so heavily? Hmmm... Well you cant very well put a commercial up on the Superbowl can ya?
