Guildwars is on a path of self destruction!
FeroxC
I think in two years the Guildwars series will be dead.
If they continue to release new expansions, judging by the impact of nightfall the game doesnt have the playerbase to keep each chapter playable each new release will have the players more and more spread out, its already a joke to try get a team together in the majority of prophecies town.
two chapters down and the new buyers will see a array of guildwars games on the shelf only rivalled by the sims and pick one only to find 1 or two people in each town.
The latest chapter will always have a population boost but i fear loyal gamers who cant afford the next 3rd or 4th expansion will be left behind in ghost towns and then quit.
were all doomed i tell you.

this made me "lol" for about 5 minutes straight.
And then I went... uhh no.
And then I went... uhh no.

They aren't trying to keep the playercount up in the older chapters. They want people to move on to the expansions.
Dmitry
now i know that communicating in some towns is a majour mmorg expirience
BUT the truth be told... i dont even want to spend more then 5 minutes in a town which is filled with people...way to many shouts "WTS/WTB etc."
people in the guild are always usefull if youre in a mood for an argument/conversation... but thats just me

I agree. All these heroes and crap make this game not MMORPG worthy any more. Your better of doing this without the internetconnection.
I already planned NOT to buy any new chapter since Anet just changed everything i liked in the game compleetly. 17 months this game has been roughly the same and now they just change all.
All the changes to skills dont bother me much but the nerfing of farming UW and other places does. Not even starting about Heroes Ascent.
I dislike every hero charater, koss etc, they are not near as good but they take the places of humans. People dont even play with others in PVP any more. Its just Heroes and Henchman.
Luckly there are other games.
Anet doesnt get that you cant change a game compleetly if it has been running for 17 months.

Why can't you change a game after 17 months? If they don't change anything...meh...
If you don't like heroes, I'd agree they aren't as good as decent players...go ahead and find some decent players to play with you then. No one is forcing you to play with the heroes...
Have fun in your other games. Cya

while anet might WANT people to buy the new chapter, while there are the older chapters for sale new people will buy them and see ghost towns.
fanboyism from the same old posters aside and ignoring those who automaticly leap to anets defense the OP does actually have a point

Those heroes are every where. They are here for PvE not in PVP. If you know what those shorts are standing for at least...
You can change your game with the new chapter not with compleetly changing the gameplay.
The new professions in the game will change a lot. Also all the new skills will add some more fun. You dont need a 6vs6 arena for that or sidekick heroes.
Darkpower Alchemist
The heroes are strictly story plot, secondarily, they are for the lone new kid who cant get a group.
PvP has been effectively revamped with the hero/hench inclusion. I think that PvE is a bit more single player based with the hero element, but that's just me and my opinion.
If you want my opinion, the heroes are just smart henchies. You should look at it like "Build A Henchie!". They can't replace good human players, but they can help where henchies fail.
If you don't like the game, then by all means leave. Give your gold and weapons away, sell your guild, and go play a new game. most won't miss you. It's not like we all know you as a great staple of the GW community.
Where one goes, another 5 come in to take his place.

The lands of Tyria and Cantha will not be ghost towns for some time, as more and more people totally new to GW pick up the earlier campaigns and I assume there is still a market for Tyrian/Canthan greens.
Additionally, many players may become tired of seeing the sight of Elona after a couple of months and drop back to these lands for a change of scenery.

Ascalon city ?of course youl find people im talking about the maguma jungle areas, fire islands, desert they are as good as empty yet cover most the game.

My point was if you make a game that is good enough, and GW was very good in the first 12 months, then you can keep the game interesting with very small changes like skills update. And after a year or so you add a chapter with new places and skills. You dont change the compleet game. Then you still have happy old players and a lot of new ones. If people tell you that the game is good youll buy it a lot quicker then when its just standing in the store and you never heard about it. That also works the other way around.
Tainek
Of course GW is going to die, Just like WoW will, and Everquest, eventually all games die, be it in 6 months, 2 years, or more than a decade

Also, by the time Chapter 5 arrives, I don't doubt that the shops will either stop stocking Prophecies or just run out, because videogames aren't given infinite manufacturing runs, and that is the same for Online RPGs.
I have to add this also. You really need to think of each GW campaign as a human being (albeit, a human being with an severely accelerated aging process):
- On release, a chapter is born
- On the release of the next chapter the first one has grown up and "had its first child" in a sense
- By the time the 3rd chapter along this line is released, this will be mid-life for C1
- By number 4, the first one has reach old age
- Chapter 5 will be chapter 1's "death"
No exact comparison, but it's still valid, in my opinion.

He's right, NF (and other expansions) will be the death of Proph, but rightly so. Why do you still want to play Proph anyhoo? If you go on NF it's HEAVING with people, thats the place to be atm. Once people have played it, they will spread out again but Proph is gone now, there's no need to play it anymore.
Having said that, I'm halfway through it with a guild member and still loving it and loving it more for the fact we're good enough to be able to do it with just us and henchies. It's still a great game to play but not as interactive as it was. On NF though I'm being asked to join groups all the time. Life moves on and so do games.
Now, lets all hug.

Different game, but just to show the topic of, "Our game is dying!" is global.

This guy brings up some good points that apply to GW, as well:
"With the release of each previous expansion, the numbers of active players increase. After a few months these numbers dip back down again until the next expansion release occurs and players come back again. As long as new expansion releases continue, players will return and new players will join. The quality of that expansion might determine how long those players stay."
And keep in mind, it was written at the end of 2004. 2007 is around the corner, and EQ just released their 12th expansion last month.

People are playing with heroes because it's a new feature in the game, so it's the "in" thing, the "hot" thing. It'll sort itself out once the majority of ppl get thru the campaign and have played around with them more.
Nobody but heroes in PvP? Strange... didn't notice that at all. Maybe it's just your territory. I think a little shakeup on the HA is a good thing too. Too many constants in the game will kill it, because there's nothing new to keep the veterans playing. If you keep playing the same thing over and over again, veterans will get bored of it. That's why certain updates are designed to shake things up a little.
But it's sad to think you want to stop getting new expansions simply because Anet nerfed farming runs (when farming was never encouraged by Anet) and HA (which it's just a shake up, similar to skill balancing and new skills, but you can accept the skill changes...).

@Vandal2k6 - ANet took care of the "not stocked" problem by putting chapters for purchase in on-line store. ANet also continues to issue trial keys for all older chapters, so anyone purchasing the latest can get a taste of the older ones.
OP - When a new GW player buys the current chapter, he soon finds out from older players that if you want some great skills for PvE, he needs to buy the older chapters, especially Prophecies.
As said by others, everytime a new chapter arrives, the older ones take a population drop until people have created the new professions and taken them through the new game. (I've seen a lot of posts from players who have already finished.)
ANet is thinking ahead on all this.
For PvE, they are not putting out the same game in a new location so that people lose interest. They provided for migrating characters back and forth between chapters, so you don' have to keep creating the same one over and over.
For PvP, they have provided PvP only editions and skill packs, so that players with no interest in PvE don't have to play that part of the game. They knew it would cut down on the in-game population. It doesn't seem to have worried the company.

each chapter has items ans skills you cant get in the other ones, so I doubt any chapter will die unless take away whats unique from that chapter.
Vandal2k6
You must remember there are 3 areas to play in now. While there may be as many as, or maybe more people playing, areas are going to seem emptier because they're spread out more. It doesn't mean the game is dead, or even dieing at all. True, looking at TOA now it's weird because the place was choka only a few weeks ago, now it's nearly empty. This is because NF is brand new tho imo.

There seem to be alot of ppl who want to force others to play with only real ppl because that is the way THEY like to play the game.
If ppl start choosing hench and hero over real players than that is their choice of how THEY want to play.
I don't think the problem is a big a some make it look. Someone said it already. Playing with hero's and leveling them is "in" and hot atm. When the novelty wears off people will revert back to their way of playing.
Everybody has a choice now and that only seems fair to me.
/edit: And as with every other choice in guildwars it is not permanent, you can change your mind whenever you want.
Count to Potato
expansions are to expand the game further, like starcraft, when starcraft came out alot of people played it then Broodwars came out adn the majority of people switched over even though there wasn't a big change :0

its called a MMO for a reason...

Guild Wars is not an MMO!
/anger off. Sorry.
Part of the reason heroes were introduced were probably because stuck-up fools or ignorant morons made it difficult to find a good group, especially in the case of Mesmers, who, regardless of level, skill or how many times they flattened the Lich with an unheard of build, are still seen as usless in the eyes of the imbeciles.

I think the OP could've phrased it better, but personally I do think it's a problem without a ready solution. With more chapters, fewer and fewer people are going to stay in previous chapters, and grouping can become a problem, as I have found out myself. The population at Drok's has dropped significantly since Factions/Nightfall release, and the population at Kaineng has also dropped significantly since Nightfall's release. Granted some people will buy and like Nightfall so much, that they'll go back and purchase Prophecies, but they may be disappointed to find that there're only a few people who are still in those areas, so much so that it may be problematic to find groups for missions/quests. I believe ANet is working on a better grouping system, but we'll just have to wait and see. I think the new hero system also alleviates this problem somewhat, although it's only available to those who own Nightfall.

Massive? Depends on one's definition, granted, but GW is arguably massive.
Multiplayer? I keep noticing other players (Damn them!) every time I go into a town, so I expect that's a given.
Online? Well GW does say it's DLing stuff and connecting and such, so I expect so.
Call it what you like, but when it quacks like a duck and gets put on the same shelf as all the other ducks down at GameStop, it is, at the very least, an ornithoid.

Anet could have created a grouping system, instead they introduced better henchies, thus making it even easier to solo or dual the game. Granted, it was easy enough to do that anyway, but is further encouraging it better for the game in the long run? I tend to doubt it, but time will tell.

Well from my point of view GW ain't dying, it's growing more and more popular, I visited a game store earlier this week, guess what game was nr.1. Of course the older chapters will get less and less people in them, but then there are guilds. Ohh yeah there are actually something called Guilds in Guild Wars, they can often help you where ever you are (or at least many do). And Prophecies is not dying yet (even though it's quite empty, people will come back) but Factions might die due to people not liking it as much as the other chapters. GW will of course die one day, the graphic will become ancient, but who says ANet will die?
