Patent and TradeMark Office has record of GW2 and Eye of the North

Yeah I'm evil, I'm making a new thread but Guild Wars: Eye of the North and Guild Wars 2 have now been trademarked by ArenaNet and it shows up in the US Patent and Trademark Office. And as far as I know you can't trademark something you have no intention on using. So I'd put this in the "confirmed" category just to keep people up to date. Standard disclaimer applies, nothing is official until announced by NCSoft or ArenaNet but paper filings and that it's live in the trademark office are fairly firm indicators.

Eh, I would guess that "Utopia" is nothing more but a codename. Not like you can trademark generic words anyway. I mean, it's not like Intel released a processor branded "Cedar Mill" - it came out as Pentium 4 6x1.

lol Inde's thread.

Now who/where are the mofos who were laughing at the posters/site when the news first broke at the inquirer website?

Why would they wait to get the patent until after the news was leaked? Obviously there's more of a threat of someone 'stealing' the name once the news is leaked before the patent, but I would've thought as soon as they agreed on this name, they would have gotten the patent.

Precisely. A name doesn't make the Inquirer article fully true. History will repeat itself.

Remember how chapter 2 and 3 had false information in magazines and media outlets?

Actually, you can copyright generic words. For example, the University of Notre Dame has copyrighted the word "Irish."

The fact is, "Utopia" is also copyrighted as well. A name doesn't mean everything else in the article was true.

Question - the phrase "Guild Wars" is always (c) Anet, right? No other company can use that name in conjunction with other words?

It takes along time to actually get the patent. They probably applied for it sometime ago and just now got it granted. Those things have to be researched by a group of lawyers to insure it does not infringe on someone elses patent.

i think with inventions and stuff it takes a long time to get a patent, but this process probably isnt very involved

Exactly, note that these are applications for a Trademark, they are not registered. They have not been published for opposition nor have they been officially registered. That means that these are not under the same statue of protection granted to registered trademarks though they are in process. That is to the best of my understanding of trademarks.

In other words, don't bank on these being for real. Granted a number of the trademarks listed are not registered, they still have a period of opposition to go through before they can be officially registered names.

do you have any idea how much it costs to get a patent? well...around 2k, but would NCSoft have enough guts to play around with us? Ok that came out wrong, let me give it another try...would they waste their time and effort just to fool a bunch of people they see as pieces of hard cold cash? came out wrong again...I give up. XD

FOR Future Reference:

A Trademark is NOT a Patent.

Trademarks can be filed more quickly than patents can.

It would be really goofy to go to this extreme to fool and distract everyone... for a matter of a couple of weeks. Please. Anet is not exactly known for their misinformation. This pretty much proves that Eye of the North and GW2 are 99.9% true. The only thing that would cause this to be not true, is a major decision to change the names/gameplan in the future.
