Patent and TradeMark Office has record of GW2 and Eye of the North
ryanryanryan0310
yeap so it's true, you don't spend time and money just to patent names and not use it...

Hahahaha, you guys are like hawks. D:Cant you just be patient, and let Anet reveal stuff when they're good and ready?

Hey maybe I could buy off the trademark for Guild Wars 3. It would be interesting to see what happens then. I have enough funds to do it too.

This is very good news as it does end some rumors and speculation.
GW:EN is for real!

Btw, If the there is trademark for it as well a patent, it won't say that it's still all true. I mean you can get a patent for 500 euro for the rest of your life. A old classmate did that to her logo, 500 euro, write down why is was unique and pay 500 euro for the rest of her life. So for a joke it would be less then 100 euro, and websites like the inquiver or something can easely take that 100 euro from sponsored banners or another advertising stuff.
Maybe the whole stuff around the GW:EN expansion is one big "How we get more visitors on this website" trick, or the whole GW:EN expansion is just a 1 aprils fools thingy.
I have seriously being thinking of it, but I doubt this is real
- GW:EN, seriously that sounds like a big community joke to me
- Patent and trademark, not that expensive to have your own. (at least in holland) but written by NcSoft? 1 April maybe? :/ big vague
- Non human characters, does this follow the GW lore? and why suddenly now?
- GW2, why say when still an expasion left to be bought, that's a really bad marketing strategy.
- No Anet people reacting on the whole: GW:EN idea, mmh :/
- Gaile said: "Next month more info about new GW stuff", mmh next month is April right? And magazine, maybe an article: "Whole GW:EN rumour is joke, real info inside here" Omg that's soo nice for those magazines, loads of people will buy since it's the only official source of information. (that's a big marketing strategy there for the magazines and a big deal maybe between Anet and magazine? :/ sounds like a yes)
I think something isn't right here, but well would be great 1 april fools day, the magazine will seriously have huge bump of buyers and Anet did a serious history in gaming joke. I think Anet is nuts enought to do that.
For me, think whatever you want guys, because I think I knew what's going on. And seriously it's something to LOL about for several weeks more in april for me at least. I can't wait for confirmation of all this stuff. And we'll see who was right.

Watching the naysayers squirm is entertaining!
Oh well, two days to wait for the news, it won't kill us! Plus anyway, most of the news we may get now (official or not) is about releases so far in the future that things are bound to change. There were lots of stuff announced with Nightfall that didn't materialize until month laters, and some of it that has yet to materialize.
So official news or rumourmill, it's all the same. Only the end product truth truly matters. The rest is just speculation.

Yes, it's true, much speculation will be resolved -- one way or another -- in a few days' time. But did days every turn over more slowly?

Copyright, Trademark and Patent laws are all completely separate, Trademarks being by far the most regulated. You have to use them and be prepared to defend them. Just ask Cisco about their iPhone.
Come on, the article was totally true, Gaile just needed us to buy the mag so they keep a good relationship with their media partners. What else could she say? They'll probably be a few differences lost in reporter translation and some new bits, but it'll be totally true. Not that I would put money on it or anything...

while I'm leaning towards it being true, the idea that it's all gospel because there are copyrights and patents out is junk, for all we know could be where the enquirer got the idea from.
Just to point out, I have over 300 domain names registered that relate to a single domain, simply so no one else attempts to rip off my name and product.

Maybe can put up another Dooms day thread since gw1 is coming to a end with one more chapter to go.
When GW 2 is out lets all watch the stock market crash.

For all those talking about Utopia, that was a WHOIS record, not a trademark. And according to a ... I can't remember, was it IGN, GameSpy, GameSpot? ... article, an NCSoft official stated that guildwarsutopia.com was to be used for some unannounced project (i.e. it had nothing to do with a new chapter).
When a company goes to the US Patent and Trademark Office, they're being serious. There is absolutely zero possibility that they would trademark false names to 'throw us off the trail'.
Let's just wait two more days to get the full story. No more conspiracy theories, please.

I've always hoped for more snow covered area's so I certainly hope that that part of it is true
I do wonder why patents are needed for game names though, somehow a trade mark seems enough. Planning on bringing out any action figures at all?
Anyone with some legal knowledge care to comment on why a patent is needed or useful for a game name?

im pretty sure gaile said in her last chat that utopia is beeing used but not the proper name

If we assume, that it will come out 09 or 10 which is info from Inquierer therefore you must also assume that the BETA Testing will be happening late this year or begining of next year, and that would be why they would Trademark the name so the can use it for BETA and later for the actual release.
The Great Al
how does one become a beta tester?

From what I've read, though, it sounds like they've only trademarked the game names. No game patents yet, unless I misread something.
=DNC=Trucker
chill out people. whats the big fuss?

how cool
is Gw2 and gw Eye of the north the same game?

Toilet - no...GW:EN is presumably the next chapter, whereas GW2 is a new game altogether.
I would be pretty upset (well, as upset as I could get over a video game) if the title is NOT GW:Eye of the North, just because Gaile by this point should have told us that it wasn't. Clearly PCGamer has the exclusive and will presumably tell us the title of the chapter, but if the title is NOT Eye of the North, Gaile telling us that does not in any way take away from PCGamer's exclusive article.

I think Anet is really laughing right now at all this bogus information coming out. I think people are so anxiously awaiting chapter 4 and the rumors of GW2 to be true or not true that some people are just believing everything they first hear or read because they can't wait. What does Gail always keep reminding us, if it doesn't come from Anet then don't believe the hype. It is just that simple. Anyway, back to playing , my necro needs just a few more elites to have them all ! Have fun !

Also, If you noticed the date on the trademark registration is a day LATER than than when Inq posted the article.
And the 300 domain name thing is just overkill unless your product is "that" popular.
Silly Warrior
I'd say all of this, along with the big Inquirer information, and the fact gaile confirmed the information in one of the threads, pretty much proves all of this information to be correct.
There's way to much evidence to not say that GW:EN isn't coming. It definatly is, and it will most likly be announced on Thursday, like Anet always does, along with the PC Gamer article, giving more info.
Good find Inde!
