Do people take GW too seriously?
Rocky Raccoon
I sometimes think people forget GW is only a game. I play it to relax and relieve the stress of real life situations. I can't believe that I am the only one who feels this way. Any comments would be appreciated.

What are you talking about?
Is this a general observation, or based on something specific?

This is a really, really vague thread about an extremely vague and broad observation. It may be an honest question, but so is "Hey, is the sky blue?"

The way Guild Wars is made makes it extremely easy to get addicted, take it way too serious and spend hours on end playing it..
However there are plenty of players who are seriously easy going about it, most of which will not be registered on this forum, as being on a forum such as this one, takes a certain amount of dedication to the game (whether you're actively posting or not).
But you can also just blame it on human nature. Some people spend hours on end to complete the expert level of minesweeper within 38 seconds.
Blame whatever creator you believe in. Blame (d)evolution. And, of course, blame society

The way Guild Wars is made makes it extremely easy to get addicted...
WTF?
Are you kidding me?
This game is not an addicting game as it:
1) Has a lvl20 cap making you not have to spend months and months to get to lvl100.
2) Has a weapon and armor cap, making you not have to spend months and months to get the best armor and weapons.
3) Has a closed storyline, making the story actually end after 1-2 months of playing.
After you have reached lvl20, got max armor and weapons, and have finished the campaigns, the only thing to do is stick to pvp.
How is that addictive?

people take life too seriously.... thats why they get hooked into the game... its escapism. so whats your point? go to a trekkie seminar if you want to see :
'taken too seriously'
what makes players too serious about this game? the fact that we like to discuss the facets of the game while we go about our extremely boring jobs on a fansite????

with every game there are those who take it too seriously and then there are those who play for fun or relaxation. there really isn't a point in stating the fact that people take it to seriously. To some its just like watching tv only instead they get to interact with others instead of just watching something stupid and pointless on tv.

Yes, I take GW a little seriously. But I also make sure fun is my main concern. I enjoy playing games... gaming is a hobby of mine, and I don't think taking a hobby a little seriously is too weird of a thing.

Hey, it's just a game.
The initial shock of realising that, sometime, you're gonna have to abandon GW, even if only to play GW2, hurts. But after you get over it, it's OK.

Not to mention that PvP is really the only interesting thing worth doing once you're done with the game

This thread is vague...
OP... why don't you give us some situations in which 'you' think people may be taking the game too seriously??
When Factions first came out, I got so excited when I reached Luxon borders and played Fort Aspenwood, that I would type in chat "Death to Kurzicks!!". I often got the retarded phrase "clam down it's just a game" to which my response was "I know, that's why I'm saying 'Death to Kurzicks!!!'"
Often, it's not the people who 'you' think are taking the game too seriously, but its the people who say that others are taking it too seriously.

Yes, I meet people all the time in the Guild Wars Universe that just need to step away from the computer and get some fresh air and sunshine. The community as I see it is better than most online games imo.
I am addicted to the game but people forget its about fun and get focused on elitism and who has the best mini pet, weapons and armor.

Um...there ARE reasons to take this game seriously. Case and point: Tournaments. You get your guild posted on the main site, everyone knows who you are, and you may get a section in your local gaming magazine dedicated in your honor (PCGamer...forgot which issue). But for the average joe...we play this game because we have intrest in it. Saying that GW gets boring is just like saying WoW gets boring...the people who are addicted will come up with billions of reasons to say otherwise.
MMSDome
sometimes i get into it to much then tell myself "This dont mean anything in real life" Then I usually stop playing for a few days...
lucifer_uk
The only people who take it too seriously are the ones that take it to the enth degree and commit suicide over hacks and dupes, etc
Guardian of the Light
People take everything too seriously. It's just a fact of life.

The OP is vague, and hard to tell exactly what he means and where he's coming from (or she as the case may be). Regardless, I agree with:
That part. Unfortunately, in order to relax in a game, specifically an RPG, I have to really get involved in the game, possibly "taking it too seriously" as some would see it. I like to RP, and more or less escape into this other world. That helps to ease the stresses of real life. Sometimes it can mean just sitting around and chatting, leisurely exploring, or even take on some big baddies, or even PvP. If I had a rough day, I'll more than likely want to chill out and just relax in-game. If I had a boring or aggrevating day, I may want to take out my aggressions in some intense combat. Just depends.
Point is, some can see that activity as "taking it too seriously", while I see it as "getting into the game". If you hit a snag in your mind where you get into the game too much that you no longer realize it is a game, I would suggest psychological help. Just depends on where you're coming from and what you consider "too seriously" or too much. I hate to say it, though, but when you start asking these questions, that could be a sign that you're starting to back up and look at yourself, which may mean you are having some issues with the blurry line of reality. Good luck with that.

All you have to do is read the rants, whines, bitchfests, and complaints after every skill change. Hell yeah they take the game waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too seriously. "OMG!!111 They nerfed me again (personally? ya right). I'm quitting forever. Or until the next skill change so I can cry in public again"
When someone believes that Anet will deliberately single out their "uber" farming build, they take the game too seriously. (Check the farming section for how often people claim thier super secret build is better, but won't share due to "nerfs")
When someone rips off another player for virtual items, they take the game way too seriously.
The internet is a haven for social misfits that often can't deal with real life. MMO's attract them in droves. GW is free, and an easy way for these misfits to hide virtually forever. So do people take a (any) game too seriously? Damn straight.

yep. Ill give you 3 good examples. true story, i swear:
logged in to trap some stygian gems real quick, some guy is spamming local chat with WTB WINTERGREEN SPEAR, TITAN GEMS. I say, pm me offer for wg spear. The guy wearing FoW continues to spam it. I follow him to where he is standing, and type 3 buttons on my keyboard: enter, up, enter.
some ele runs up, flashes a tiger, and starts yelling crazy things, focusing on calling us noob pve scrubs. Her lightbringer rank is two. The guy wouldnt give me an answer on the wintergreen spear, which is why im here at the forums right now.
pc on wg spear? lol gtg

When there's 100.000 dollars at stake, I don't think it's a bad thing to take a game seriously.

I know the post was vague to start off and it was on purpose. I wanted to see the the percentage of people who would give an answer that was straight forward as opposed to sarcastic. Let's just say I got what I expected. For the record I have over 1700 hours of game time and counting, for GW is one of the best games I have ever played.

I'm sure there are those that take this game seriously, either in the PvE side or the PvP side ... or even both! Personally, I'm not a big PvP person as I have had my share of it when I was a FPS-Addict but there were some accounts that I have acted a bit too seriously on the PvE side by trying to grind my Lightbringer rank up. However, after being proven that one can beat Mallyx with at least a minimum of Rank 3, then I came to realize that even though having a high LB rank is good, it's not really a "requirement".
On some occasions, I have encountered some people that debate which is the "best" armor in the game. Statistically speaking, Obsidian Armor (or any 15k/Ascended armor for that matter) is no better than the armor you can get at Droks, Docks, or Kaineng for way loads cheaper. Better looking? Well, that's solely based on opinion. I see a lot of warriors with either Kurzick or Obsidian armor but in my honest opinion, I think the Obsidian armor on a warrior looks a bit plain but the Kurzick armor looks slick, despite Obsidian costing a lot more.
This same argument also applies to weapons. I mean Urgoz's Longbow is basically a max damage longbow with perfect fortitude, sundering, and 15^50 mods on it. The only major difference is the skin. Likewise, a gold req9 Elemental Sword with perfect mods is no different, mod-wise, than a req9 sword you could get from a collector after applying the respective mods on it.
In the end, it's just a matter of taste. If you want get a bit serious in your gaming and demand some of the most expensive (and subjectively best-looking) stuff out there, then go for it! No one's stopping you in PvE. In PvP, the only ones stopping you from getting the next Hero rank would be another bunch of human players of varying Hero levels.
